We aimed to determine the reproducibility of assessments made by independent reviewers of papers submitted for publication to clinical neuroscience journals and abstracts submitted for presentation at clinical neuroscience conferences. We studied two journals in which manuscripts were routinely assessed by two reviewers, and two conferences in which abstracts were routinely scored by multiple reviewers. Agreement between the reviewers as to whether manuscripts should be accepted, revised or rejected was not significantly greater than that expected by chance [kappa = 0.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.04 to -0.20] for 179 consecutive papers submitted to Journal A, and was poor (kappa = 0.28, 0.12 to 0. 40) for 116 papers submitted to Journal B. Nonetheless, our conclusion that the allure of neuroscience is conceptual rather than pictorial should be further explored in future studies. A promising approach would be to directly compare a neuroscience image to a non-neuroscience image. Assuming that perceptual features of the stimuli are well matched across conditions, this comparison could show more conclusively that brain images have an effect because of the conceptual information they provide and not because of their perceptual properties. Future studies should also explore whether the effect of the neuroscience text is fully redundant with the effect of the neuroscience image. If so, a brain image without accompanying text should be sufficient to cause a maximum effect. In the absence of a contribution from perceptual fluency (an absence we documented in Experiment 1), we predict that an isolated brain image will be less effective than neuroscience text. Our research program lies at the intersection between biological psychiatry and cognitive neuroscience with developmental and social cognition components. Our broad research goals are to specify and understand neurobiological bases of psychoses and in doing so, to further elucidate neural underpinnings of normal cognitive processes. Since early 1990s, we have focused on understanding the nature of cognitive deficits of schizophrenia (e.g. deficits in working memory, attention, oculomotor control, thought) to elucidate the relationships among behavioral signs, brain abnormalities and psychotic symptoms. We work with observable and quantifiable behaviors that can clearly differentiate patients with schizophrenia from healthy people and we try to understand the neural origins and behavioral consequences of these differences. Abstract Background The pathophysiology of early brain injury (EBI) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is poorly understood. The present study evaluates the influence of zinc transporter 3 (ZnT3) knockout and the depletion of vesicular zinc on EBI. Methodology SAH was induced in ZnT3 KO mice by internal carotid artery perforation. The changes in behavior were recorded at 24 hours after SAH. Hematoxylin-eosin, Nissl and TUNEL staining were performed to evaluate neuronal apoptosis. Data from mice with a score of 8-12 in intracerebral bleeding (i.e. moderate SAH), were analyzed. Results The degree of SAH-induced neuronal injury was directly correlated to the amount of blood lost, which in turn was negatively reflected in their behavior. The Wild Type (WT)-SAH group behaved poorly when compared to the knockout (KO)-SAH mice and their poor neurological score was accompanied by an increase in the number of apoptotic neurons.
