I have to say that I was really looking forward to todays seminar. Our reading was about Freud and Erikson and all the other big psych gurus, and even the term "neuropsychiatry" sounds interesting and full of promise. Unfortunately, the actuality did not match the anticipation. First of all, the seminar leader spent the first half hour of the class fiddling around with the AV equipment, which used up a quarter of our time. When he finally got it working, the majority of the seminar consisted of him showing us movie clips of a baby growing up into a toddler and then a young child. He would stop the movie at various points and ask about what we had seen. The answer was something profound like, "The baby sat up." Wow, the baby sat up. Amazing. We were supposed to spend the last 45 minutes meeting with psychiatrists in small groups to discuss child development, but it ended up being about 10 minutes. We investigate the brain networks and neurotransmitters involved in symptoms of movement disorders, such as Parkinsons disease, and the mechanisms by which modulating these networks through electrical stimulation affects these symptoms. We are particularly interested in the mechanisms through which neuromodulation therapies like deep brain stimulation affect non-motor brain functions, such as cognitive function and mood. We use imaging of specific neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine and dopamine, to understand the changes in brain chemistry associated with the clinical effects of deep brain stimulation and to predict which patients are likely to have changes in non-motor symptoms following DBS. Oxytocin has long been known as the "love hormone", as scientific studies have shown that it promotes feelings of love, social bonding and well-being, and increases positive social emotions such as trust and altruism. Oxytocin administered intranasally in humans has shown evidence of increased trust and reduced anxiety, and the hormone has also been tested as an anti-anxiety drug in mice, so scientists were surprised to find that oxytocin strengthens negative social memory, future anxiety and emotional pain. Frank was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and received his MD degree in 1954 from San Marcos University. Several case reports and case series have reported immunological encephalopathies mimicking dysexecutive, psychotic, depressive, and demential syndromes. Pathophysiologically, antineuronal antibodies against neuronal cell surface antigens (e.g., NMDAR-antibodies), against intracellular synaptic antigens (e.g., GAD-antibodies), and against intracellular onconeural antigens (e.g., Hu-antibodies) need to be distinguished. Maurice OConnor Drury (called Con Drury by his friends) was born in Exeter in 1907, of Irish parentage. He attended the Grammar School of that city and then went in 1925 to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took the Moral Science Tripos. In 1929, Drury met Ludwig Wittgenstein, a newly appointed lecturer in philosophy at Trinity College. Wittgenstein had taken up a fellowship in that College following strenuous efforts by Frank Ramsey, Bertrand Russell and Maynard Keynes to bring him back to philosophy from self-imposed obscurity as a primary school teacher in remote mountain villages in Lower Austria. Drury and Wittgenstein met at a meeting of the Moral Science Club, in C.D. Broads rooms. A UK-based ophthalmologist of Goan origin, Dr Lyndon da Cruz, son of Albert and Florinda da Cruz from Cruz-vaddo in Saligao and Perth Australia, is credited with conducting the first three successful operations to implant artificial electronic retinal devices in the eyes of the blind. The device is called a bionic eye.. On a visit to his grandfathers house in Saligao recently, the 44-year-old University of Australia graduate told the Times of India that he was also part of another project - the pioneering work of transplanting stem cell-derived retinal cells for restoring sight to the blind patients.
