Insulin sensitivity as indexed by the HOMA value in our community-based data shows strong links to deficits in speech production. We are the first to demonstrate this in a negative association between the HOMA value and VF scores in cognitively healthy, nondiabetic elderly men and women. Furthermore, we found that HOMA is negatively coupled with gray matter volume in the temporal lobe (specifically BAs 21 and 22) brain regions that support language ability (3,28,29). Corroborating previous findings (27), we show that the HOMA value is negatively correlated with total brain size as well. In contrast, separate analyses in the cognitively impaired and diabetic subgroups did not produce significant associations. These results provide evidence that fluctuations in insulin sensitivity in cognitively healthy, nondiabetic elderly men and women (independent of sex effects) are linked to changes in cognitive performance and brain volume.. Both impaired glucose tolerance and increased HOMA values have been ...
OBJECTIVE. Impaired insulin sensitivity is linked to cognitive deficits and reduced brain size. However, it is not yet known whether insulin sensitivity involves regional changes in gray matter volume. Against this background, we examined the association between insulin sensitivity, cognitive performance, and regional gray matter volume in 285 cognitively healthy elderly men and women aged 75 years from the Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS) study.. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS. Insulin sensitivity was calculated from fasting serum insulin and plasma glucose determinations using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) method. Cognitive performance was examined by a categorical verbal fluency. Participants also underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scan. Multivariate analysis using linear regression was conducted, controlling for potential confounders (sex, education, serum LDL cholesterol, mean arterial blood pressure, and ...

Inhalation exposures were 6h/d on GD 5-17 at levels of 0, 2000, 10,000, and 20,000mg/m3. Dams were evaluated for evidence of maternal toxicity, and fetuses were weighed, sexed, and evaluated for external, visceral, and skeletal
According to a work sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, the lubricity of a reformulated gasoline containing oxygenates (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether -MTBE-) and a high aromatic content was not unusual or markedly different from commercially available non-oxygenated gasoline fuels [12]. However, Eleftherakis et al. [11] reported that both aromatics and MTBE enhanced gasoline lubricity. Wei et al. [5] modified a conventional high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR) by deepening the fuel holder and covering the lubricant test chamber with a close-fitting lid in order to measure the wear performance of gasoline and diesel fuels. They found that commercial gasoline containing detergent additives had a wide range of variation in lubricity (from poorer to slightly better than Class 1 Sweden low sulfur diesel fuel -680 µm-). They concluded that detergent additives did not significantly affect fuel lubricity and that commercial lubricity additives for diesel fuels were also effective for gasoline. ...

Close to half of the worlds methanol is used in energy-related applications. Methanol can be used on its own as a vehicle fuel or blended directly into gasoline to produce a high-octane, efficient fuel with lower emissions than conventional gasoline. Methanol vehicle fuels have widespread use in China and have been introduced in several countries outside of China. Methanol is also used as a cooking fuel and in thermal applications (industrial boilers, furnaces, and kilns), primarily in China. Methanol is also emerging as a clean-burning marine fuel that can cost-effectively meet the shipping industrys increasingly stringent emissions regulations.. In recent years, the use of methanol in the production of olefins or methanol-to-olefins (MTO) has grown rapidly.. Methanol is used to produce methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), a gasoline component that improves air quality, and dimethyl ether (DME), a clean-burning fuel with similar properties to propane.. Methanol is also a key component in ...

Ramelteon is a treatment for insomnia approved for use in the United States (US) in July 2005 and in the Philippines and Indonesia in 2008. It is currently under development in the European Union (EU) and Japan. Ramelteon is marketed in the US as ROZEREM® for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty with sleep onset in patients over 18 years of age.. In adolescents, the form of sleep onset and/or sleep maintenance insomnia, defined as psychophysiologic insomnia, is similar to adults, and more appropriate for treatment with pharmacological intervention when compared to insomnia in children younger than 12 years of age. In psychophysiologic insomnia, the individual develops conditioned anxiety around difficulty falling or staying asleep, which leads to heightened physiologic and emotional arousal and further compromises the ability to sleep. In children over the age of 12, insomnia is more likely to be persistent and have identifiable consequences. In addition, there is less ...

H.188. AN ACT RELATING TO PROHIBITING THE SALE AND STORAGE OF FUEL PRODUCTS CONTAINING THE ADDITIVE MTBE. It is hereby enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont: Sec. 1. FINDINGS. (a) Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), the most common oxygenate added to gasoline and other fuel products used in the state and throughout the United States, may leak into and contaminate groundwater supplies.. (b) MTBE is water soluble and, therefore, difficult and costly to remove from water. (c) MTBE, while colorless, has a turpentine-like taste and smell which can be detected at extremely low concentrations. (d) MTBE and other chemically similar oxygenates may be human carcinogens and pose other potential health risks, including, but not limited to, memory loss, asthma, and skin irritation. (e) As water is a precious and vital resource to the states growing population, agricultural and tourism industries, and unique environment, it is imperative that the state halt further contamination and ...
Our study sheds light on why patients with mental stress ischemia were more likely to experience AECG ischemia during daily life activities. The heightened resting hemodynamics and more exaggerated peak hemodynamic response to mental stress in patients who experience daily life ischemia suggest that they may be in a chronic state of increased sympathetic arousal, and more prone to an exaggerated sympathetic systemic response to mental or exercise stress as well. The HR at rest and in response to stress was lower in our patients with daily life ischemia compared with the patients without daily life ischemia, which may represent a reflex response to the chronically increased EF and SV. We found no correlation between the level of serum epinephrine or norepinephrine at rest or at peak stress and the presence or absence of daily life ischemia, but these may not be an adequate gauge of either a chronic or an acute state of arousal or associated vascular effects.. The strong association between the ...

0058] Several adsorption studies have shown the adsorbent dosage to influence the adsorbate removal efficiencies, because it determines the adsorption capacity of adsorbents based on the number of adsorption sites available (Etim, U. J., Umoren S. A., Eduok U. M. (2012). Coconut coir dust as a low cost adsorbent for the removal of cationic dye from aqueous solution, Journal of Saudi Chemical Society--incorporated herein by reference in its entirety). FIG. 5 shows that with the exception of silver nanoparticles doped carbon fly ash, there was no significant variation in the percentage removal of MTBE for all other fly ash based adsorbent materials tested, with change in dosage. Silver oxide impregnated fly ash showed an increase in adsorption with increase in dosage of adsorbent material until a peak dosage was reached, beyond which a slight decrease in adsorption was observed with increase in adsorbent material. A peak reduction of 24% was noted at 50 mg of adsorbent and further increase in ...
Methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) belongs to the group of gasoline oxygenates and persistent environment contaminants, and shows potential for biodegradation in aerobic and anaerobic conditions, through application of pure microbial cultures. Presented research shows that indigenous bacterial isolates 6sy and 24p, selected from oil hydrocarbons-contaminated environments, were capable of utilizing MTBE as sole carbon and energy source. Based on 16S rDNA sequence analysis, bacterial isolates 6sy and 24p were identified as Staphylococcus saprophyticus subsp. saprophyticus and Pseudomonas sp., respectively. The MTBE biodegradation rate was affected by longevity of incubation period and initial MTBE concentration. After 3 weeks of incubation at 25°C in a dark, the removal rates of initial 25 and 125 ppm MTBE concentrations by Staphylococcus saprophyticus 6sy were found to be 97, and 63%, respectively, while efficiency of Pseudomonas sp. in degradation of indicated concentrations was 96, and 40%,
Schizophrenia is a disabling disorder that is associated with specific inheritable neurobiologic deficits. These deficits can cause problems with memory, visual attention, information processing, and other aspects of daily living. Understanding the genetic components of these deficits in people with schizophrenia and their unaffected family members may help uncover the neurobiological basis, risk factors, and heritability of the disease. In addition, the information may serve to create more effective treatments and possibly a cure for the disease. This study will serve to provide information about the genetic basis of known inherited neurobiological deficits in people with schizophrenia. In turn, this may guide further studies on the genetics of schizophrenia.. Participants will attend 2 study visits, each of which will last approximately 4 hours. The first will include blood tests and diagnostic interviews of participating families to evaluate the presence of schizophrenic symptoms. The second ...

Family relational patterns: My current research focuses on childhood physical and emotional illness as influenced by specifically modeled family relational patterns. To study this question, I have theoretically and empirically analyzed specific patterns of family interaction into measurable component dimensions and demonstrated their reliability, validity and clinical relevance to pediatric stress-related illness. A confluent area of research is the investigation of psychophysiological mechanisms and pathways by which psychosocial factors and family patterns may impact on childhood illness. Gender, ethnic and SES factors are being explored to address socio-cultural influences on pediatric stress-related illness. My long term goal is to develop an empirically substantiated heuristic model of pathways by which socio-cultural, family, and individual emotional factors interact to influence psychophysiologic aspects of childhood physical and emotional illness. This model will inform translational ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Depression and ischemic heart disease. AU - OConnor, Christopher M.. AU - Gurbel, Paul A.. AU - Serebruany, Victor L.. PY - 2000/1/1. Y1 - 2000/1/1. N2 - Major depression is a common comorbidity associated with ischemic heart disease (IHD). There is growing evidence that psychological stress in general and depression in particular predispose to cardiovascular disease. Persons who have mental stress during daily life are at twice the risk of myocardial ischemia, and patients with post-myocardial infarction depression have higher mortality rates than nondepressed controls. These data suggest a psychophysiologic mechanism underlying the vulnerability of depressed patients to IHD. Clinical studies have demonstrated that depression is associated with a much higher risk of both cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, which could be caused by platelet activation. Physicians should maintain a heightened level of clinical suspicion for depression and depressive disorders in persons with ...
Schizophrenic symptoms and hallucinogenic effects have been thought of as similar for a long time. The aim of this paper is to review the current findings in the research of schizophrenia and hallucinogens; symptoms and effects, brain imaging studies and biochemical studies are compared. Systematic investigations show that the acute symptoms of schizophrenia are particularly similar to the effects of hallucinogens when using psychometric rating scales; APZ, EPI and AMPD, even though dissimilarities have been found. Converging evidence suggests that the acute effects of schizophrenia as well as the effects of hallucinogens act through a common receptor subtype, the 5-HT2A receptor. Brain imaging studies using PET and SPECT indicates that hallucinogenic drugs increase frontal cortical activity, studies have found it to be a result of 5-HT2A receptor stimulation. Interactions between the serotonergic system and other neurotransmitter systems might aid in the understanding of these phenomena.. ...

Gasoline demand has been extensively researched, yet there has been no attempt to estimate cross-price elasticities of different grades of gasoline. Such knowledge will allow accurate determination of the impact of a fuel pricing policy that has different rates of tax or subsidy depending on the gasoline grade. Using monthly data on the Mexican gasoline market from 1999 to 2014, regular gasoline demand is estimated with an ARDL model. Endogeneity of the price and structural break are also investigated. The cross-price elasticity between regular and premium gasoline is found to be 0.875, confirming high substitutability among gasoline with different grades.. ...
