Drugs used during pregnancy can adversely affect the health and life of the mother and unborn child. However, the fact that drugs are needed to mitigate complications during pregnancy cannot be avoided. The present study was designed to identify the common complications during pregnancy and assess the medications that have been used to mitigate those complications in an attempt to improve drug prescribing during pregnancy. A hospital based cross sectional study was conducted at Manipal Teaching Hospital, Nepal in 275 pregnant women presenting with at least one complication and the drugs prescribed for the management of those complications were analyzed. Majority of the patients in this study were in the age group 20-24 (44 %) and in the third trimester (53.8 %). Maximum patients complained pain (back, abdominal, lower abdominal, neck, pelvic) as primary complication (24.3 %) which was followed by nausea/vomiting, upper respiratory tract complications, acid reflux disease and others. A. flavus isolated from Terai and inner Terai produced aflatoxin B1 & B2 at the concentration of 6 gm/kg and 0.9 mg/kg respectively (Table 5). This finding has indicated that A. flavus isolated from hills/mountain and Kathmandu region seem to have lower potency of aflatoxin production. Two strains from Kathmandu Valley produced all four aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 and G2. However, two strains from Terai, one from Kathmandu Valley and one from mountain areas did not produce aflatoxin. A. flavus isolated from terse produced the highest amount of aflatoxin compared to valley and other hills/mountainous region.. This result shows that there is a need of precautionary post-harvest measures to minimise the possible aflatoxin hazards. In short, aflatoxin can become a big menace in Terai area where temperature is relatively high and the humidity is also favourable for the growth of A. flavus. However, a careful strategy needs to be initiated to determine the extent of damage caused by A. flavus along the ...

Air pollution in the capital Kathmandu and Terai area is particularly worrying. In the case of Kathmandu, major sources of air pollution are brick kilns, fume-spewing vehicles (vehicle registration in Bagmati Zone, which includes Kathmandu Valley, doubled in the past fiscal year according to the Department of Transport Management), street dust and burning of waste at home. These factors coupled with the Valleys bowl-like topography which traps heavy polluted air, means that for most days of the year, except for the rainy seasons, the air quality of Kathmandu Valley hits dangerous level - up to five times worse than the upper limit of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards guidelines according to Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC ...
Downloadable (with restrictions)! Among South Asian countries, Nepal liberalized most extensively during the 1980s and 1990s on both domestic and external fronts. In South Asia, Nepal has the lowest per capita income, highest dependence of population on agriculture and second highest poverty rate. At the same time, Nepal has the lowest average tariffs in South Asia and has taken several steps to downsize its public food distribution system and remove a host of agricultural subsidies. The outcomes from these policy reforms in Nepal are mixed. Aggregate indicators of food sufficiency and security (per capita food availability, extent of malnourishment) show improvement in Nepal since liberalization. Relative to other South Asian countries, Nepal is doing better on some indicators, like extent of undernourished population, while on other indicators, like stunting of children, Nepal is actually doing the worst. More importantly, the gains from liberalization across regions in Nepal have been uneven. The

On the other hand, there are encouraging things like the wonderful group I have become acquainted with who are doing what they can to preserve the culture and spirit of Nepal. Made up of students and professionals, they do their best to organize activities to keep alive Nepal - especially for the second generation who have probably been born and rasied here in the US, and who only visit Nepal once a year or once every two years. From what I can tell, they show no contempt for their country, nor embarrassment either. They are proud to be Nepalese. Families are involved as well, and thats important. If Nepali families who have established themselves in various parts of the country, dont help and encourage single young Nepalese, who else do these young men and women have to turn to? It seems my area does not do much at all for the small community. To be sure, there are get-togethers, but other than those, there is no cohesive movement to really show concern for the young students who are here. ...

MALINOWSKI, REASONS 1.5(B),(D) 1. (S) Summary. Evidence that Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) personnel brutalized and killed one man they suspected of being a Maoist has spurred private investigations into the armys alleged practice of covering up the deaths of detainees. Military attaches from the U.S. and U.K. Embassies viewed the corpse of one man who evidently had been shot through the head after suffering a sustained beating. Residents of the mans village told a team of human rights activists that army personnel had picked him and four others off the street. The next morning his body turned up in a Kathmandu morgue and attracted the attention of a doctor affiliated with a group that works with torture victims. Asked by ...
The aim of this mixed method study was first to construct a path model based on existing literatures and test the direct and indirect influence of diabetes self-efficacy, social support, expectation regarding aging, socio-demographic factors (age, gender, education and employment status) and disease specific characteristics (diabetes duration, associated comorbidity, type of treatment) on diabetes self-care behaviors, the second aim was to enhance description of self-care behaviors of Nepalese adults with DM by exploring self-care strategies and context and culture specific motivating factors and/or barriers. Understanding the interrelated path among variables influencing diabetes self-care and gaining an in-depth understanding about the self-care strategies, barriers and boosters will provide evidence for planning specific and holistic nursing interventions. The participants in this study were Nepalese adults (40 years and above), who were diagnosed to have diabetes mellitus (DM) for over 6 ...
Mixed dentition space analysis methods using regression equations, namely, Moyers analysis and Tanaka-Johnston analysis are commonly used around the world. However, the applicability of these analyses among different racial groups have been questioned. The primary objective of this study was to assess the applicability of the Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston analyses among Nepalese Mongoloids and to develop regression equations for the same population if needed. One hundred (50 males and 50 females) pre-treatment study models of the Nepalese Mongoloid patients undergoing orthodontic treatment were retrieved from the archives of the department of Orthodontics. The mesiodistal widths of mandibular incisors and widths of canines and premolars of all 4 quadrants were measured by a single investigator using a digital caliper to the nearest 0.01 mm. Predicted widths of canines and premolars were obtained using standard Moyers and Tanaka-Johnston analyses and then compared with the measured widths. The measured

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular and other noncommunicable diseases in high-, low- and middle-income countries. Nepal, a low-income country in South Asia, is undergoing an epidemiological transition. Although the reported national prevalence of physical inactivity is relatively low, studies in urban and peri-urban localities have always shown higher prevalence. Therefore, this study aimed to measure physical activity in three domains-work, travel and leisure-in a peri-urban community and assess its variations across different sociodemographic correlates.. METHODS: Adult participants (n=640) from six randomly selected wards of the Jhaukhel-Duwakot Health Demographic Surveillance Site (JD-HDSS) near Kathmandu responded to the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. To determine total physical activity, we calculated the metabolic equivalent of task in minutes/week for each domain and combined the results. Respondents were categorized into high, moderate ...

The objective of this thesis is to study policy making in the Nepalese rural water supply and sanitation sector by analysing the process of national policy formulation and how the donors and their policies influence the national policies in aid recipient country, such as Nepal. It exposes the dynamics underlying the interaction between donors and the Nepalese water bureaucracies by focusing on the analysis of the roles, motives and interests of the sectoral actors in the making of policies. The study highlights the political side in the aid giving and receiving through making use of the politics of policy theoretical perspective. The rural water supply and sanitation sector was chosen as the framework for this study, because of the important role that water has for Nepal often presented as the blue gold of Nepal and the multiple and powerful donors that are active in the sector, for whom the water sector is also an important investment target. The policy making process is analysed through a case ...
Nepal was hit with two major earthquakes in recent weeks. The first hit April 25th, 2015, and the second, an aftershock of the first, hit western Nepal on May 12th. Damage to the country has been extensive, particularly in the outlying rural areas. In the district of Tanhun, there were only a handful of fatalities from the earthquake. Many homes survived the upheaval; however, these buildings had been structurally compromised to be rendered uninhabitable. Due to continued tremors in the area and fears of another large scale aftershock, many residents are obliged to sleep outside as their homes are unsafe for sleeping. Often villagers opt to sleep with their animals in the animal shelters. This poses numerous hygiene and sanitary risks, including risks of zoonosis: the passing of diseases from ...
Kathmandu, the capital and largest city in Nepal, is located in the eastern half of the country in the valley of the same name at an altitude of 1300 m (4266 ft). In recent years Khatmandu has experienced a massive migration to the city, and today has a population of over 600,000. For several hundred years it was one of three rival royal cities, the others being Bhaktapur and Patan. But the unification of Nepal under Prithvi Narayan Shah and his decision to make Kathmandu his capital, set the city firmly on a course of expansion. Today Kathmandu has more of a big-city atmosphere than either Bhaktapur or Patan and possesses a more developed urban infrastructure. Among its wealth of historic buildings it can boast the largest of the ancient royal palaces (and the newest) as well as innumerable Rana palaces and important shrines. Despite the growth which has made a modern city of Kathmandu, the old center still retains something of a medieval air. The day still begins with prayers and pujas in the ...

A number of people have asked "Are you glad this happened now or a few weeks back in Nepal." Honestly this question has got me thinking. I know that the medical care in Nepal would have been fine, Ive had friends go through this surgery there, and they do the keyhole too, and they do a good job. The doctors I would have seen would have probably spoken fluent English, as most well-educated people in Kathmandu can. In Nepal Becky would have been able to stay with me all the way through (except the actual surgery), whereas here she got sent home an hour or so before I went for surgery as visiting times were over. Of course, in Nepal she, or someone, would have been required to stay with me as healthcare doesnt include any extra care. Shed have had to get my medicines and meals. In the UK they do explain things in much more detail which is reassuring that you really do know whats going on. And then of course there is the cost ...

Our work was informed by critical theory and feminist paradigms and methodological approaches attempted to redress the traditionally male-orientated production of knowledge. This included acknowledging the gendered nature of knowledge, contemplating researcher positionality, and articulating the impact of bias on knowledge.. Between May-July 2016 a research team of four women collected the data. The team was comprised of a Nepalese gender-based violence lawyer, an English MA student, a Nepalese conflict, peace and development masters student, and two internally displaced Nepalese women who were of the same indigenous group as the participants and were working as camp volunteers for a local NGO. We conducted ten semi-structured interviews, three key informant interviews and six focus group discussions (FGDs), involving 58 participants. The participants were women over 18 living in the internally displaced persons camps. All participants identified as Tamang a marginalised indigenous ethnic ...
HEV outbreaks occur sporadically in developing countries due to faecal contamination of water and poor sanitation [25]. Given a relatively high mortality rate (0.2-4%), which is particularly high in pregnant women (10-25%) [17], HEV is a topic of public health concern in developing countries. Recent devastating earthquakes in Nepal could have facilitated an outbreak of HEV. In this study, we measured previous and current HEV infection in Nepalese blood donors after recent major earthquakes to provide surveillance data on HEV in Nepal and to determine possible risk factors for HEV exposure.. This study was conducted during the months June-September, 2015, after the devastating earthquakes and the monsoon season period, when waterborne outbreaks of HEV were likely to occur [20, 26]. Bhaktapur, Kavre and Kathmandu were among the earthquake-affected districts. In these regions, we report that 3.2% (54/1,686) of the healthy population demonstrated recent HEV exposure (through detection of HEV IgM) ...
Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a serious cause of mortality and disability in humans, particularly children in Nepal. JE has been endemic in the southern Terai area for a very long time and in more recent years has spread to the hilly areas including the Kathmandu Valley.. A major vaccination program of people has reduced the incidence of this disease but cases still commonly occur. Pigs play a significant role as amplifiers of JE virus increasing the risk of mosquitoes transmitting infection from pigs to people living in the vicinity of pig farms. There are still many gaps in information on the possible role of the movement of pigs over short distances on increasing JE risk for people within endemic areas, and the possible role of long-distance movement of viraemic pigs in establishing new endemic areas of infection.. A collaborative investigation project involving two studies is being conducted to address these gaps by Nepalese doctors and veterinarians undertaking in a 2-year One Health ...

We carried out a cross-sectional study of adults in a population exposed to biomass smoke and a non-exposed population in Nepal. Questionnaire and lung function data were acquired along with direct measures of indoor and outdoor air quality. Ventilatory function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)), forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory flow at 25-75% of FVC) was significantly reduced in the population using biomass across all age groups compared to the non-biomass-using population, even in the youngest (16-25 yrs) age group (mean FEV(1) (95% CI) 2.65 (2.57-2.73) versus 2.83 (2.74-2.91) L; p=0.004). Airflow obstruction was twice as common among biomass users compared with liquefied petroleum gas users (8.1% versus 3.6%; p|0.001), with similar patterns for males (7.4% versus 3.3%; p=0.022) and females (10.8%
The mounting emergency needs of millions of Nepalese can be overwhelming because the governments disaster response capabilities are cracking and its inability to respond to many in devastated and inaccessible areas outside Kathmandu valley are coming to the fore.. At times, the response has appeared inadequate and misplaced, adding further misfortune to vulnerable people. There is a danger of overreaction from the government, which is struggling with a continuing political debacle and bureaucratic challenges. This is unlikely to abate and could prove disastrous, leading to existential threat, compounded by further loss of life and property.. If the situation continues, millions of people will end-up living in tented shelters for years, not months.. Everything must be built from scratch. Rebuilding tasks will be arduous because economic gains have either disappeared or been reversed by the extensive destruction. Hundreds of homes, schools, hospitals, bridges, roads and other infrastructure must ...
