Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) is an infectious disease caused by a microbe called Neorickettsia risticii. First noted in the Potomac region of the country (where I practice, mind you), this organism causes diarrhea and other complications in horses including fever, depression, edema, mild colic, and laminitis.
Overview. Colitis is defined as inflammation of the large bowel (cecum and colon) and can affect adult horses as well as foals. This condition is relatively uncommon in the overall horse population; however, it is commonly seen at equine hospitals as many affected horses require intensive treatment. Sporadic (single) cases or outbreaks may occur.. Causes can be infectious or non-infectious. Common infectious agents include bacteria such as Salmonella, Clostridium difficile, Clostridium perfringens, Lawsonia intracellularis (usually weanlings), Neorickettsia risticii (Potomac Horse Fever), viruses such as rotavirus (foals only) and coronavirus and parasites such as small strongyles. Common non-infectious causes are antibiotic associated diarrhea, sand impaction, dietary imbalances, neoplasia (cancer), inflammatory bowel disease, plant toxicities and drug toxicities. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as phenylbutazone or flunixin meglumine can lead to a specific form ...

General Information: This organism was originally isolated from ticks in a field study on tick-transmitted diseases of small mammals in Canada. Member of the typhus group of Rickettsiales. Members of this genus, like other Rickettsial organisms such as Neorickettsia and Anaplasma, are obligate intracellular pathogens. In both groups, the bacteria are transmitted via an insect, usually a tick, to a host organism where they target endothelial cells and sometimes macrophages. They attach via an adhesin, rickettsial outer membrane protein A, and are internalized where they persist as cytoplasmically free organisms. Rickettsia canadensis was originally thought to be a member of the typhus group of Rickettsiales, however, it is now thought to represent a distict group with the rickettsia. ...

Commonly called Salmon Poisoning Disease (or SPD), this can be a problem for anyone who feeds their dog a raw meat diet that includes raw salmon, but it is mostly seen in the Pacific Northwest and California. The cause is infection by a rickettsial organism called Neorickettsia helminthoeca. The rickettsial organism does not directly infect the dog but is carried instead by a parasite (a flatworm or fluke) called Nanophyteus salmincola through two intermediate hosts - freshwater snails and salmonid fish.. Nanophyteus salmincola are found to infect some species of freshwater snails. The infected snail is ingested by the salmon as part of the food chain. Neither the fluke nor the rickettsial organism are lethal to the fish. The dog is exposed only when it ingests the secondary host - an infected fish. After the dog ingests the fish, the encysted fluke larvae burst and embed in the dog s intestinal tract and the rickettsia are introduced. The cycle continues when ova are excreted in dog feces to ...
Pathogen - neorickettsia (chlamydia), in their evolutionary development they are between bacteria and viruses.. The source of infection is often a sick bird - a virus carrier, releasing the microorganisms from nasal mucus, sneezing, coughing, with the dung. Infection occurs by airborne and alimentary, particles of dried droppings from sick birds, downs, slomannye the epithelium of the skin can get into the lungs, air sacks of birds and gastro-intestinal tract and there penetrating through the mucous membranes, causing the disease. A bird ill with psittacosis, usually for a long period of time remains a virus carrier.. Reservoir and source of infection for humans are domestic and wild birds. The largest epidemiological significance have Pets poultry (especially ducks and turkeys), room birds (parrots, wavy parrots, Canaries and other small songbirds) and especially urban pigeons and crows, the infestation of which ranges from 30-80%.. Ill persons who are constantly in contact with birds (poultry ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Salmon poisoning disease in two malayan sun bears. AU - Gai, Jackie J.. AU - Marks, Stanley L. PY - 2008/2/15. Y1 - 2008/2/15. N2 - Case Description - 2 captive sun bears (Helarctos malayanus) were evaluated because of acute onset of vomiting, mucoid diarrhea, lethargy, and anorexia 1 week after eating live trout from a northern California reservoir. Clinical Findings - In 1 of the bears, a CBC and serum biochemical analyses revealed mild anemia, mild eosinophilia, moderate lymphopenia, moderate hypoalbuminemia, and high serum γ-glutamyltransferase activity. Ultrasonographic examination of the same bear revealed ascites and mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Histologic examination of gastrointestinal tract biopsy specimens revealed moderate to severe lymphoplasmacytic and eosinophilic gastritis, enteritis, and colitis. Ova of Nanophyetus salmincola, the trematode vector of Neorickettsia helminthoeca (a rickettsial organism that causes salmon poisoning disease), were detected in fecal ...
Ehrlichia risticii is the causative agent of Potomac horse fever. Variations among the major antigens of different local E. risticii strains have been detected previously. To further assess genetic variability in this species or species complex, the sequences of the 16S rRNA genes of several isolates obtained from sick horses diagnosed as having Potomac horse fever were determined. The sequences of six isolates obtained from Ohio and three isolates obtained from Kentucky were amplified by PCR. Three groups of sequences were identified. The sequences of five of the Ohio isolates were identical to the sequence of the type strain of E. risticii, the Illinois strain. The sequence of one Ohio isolate, isolate 081, was unique; this sequence differed in 10 nucleotides from the sequence of the type strain (level of similarity, 99.3%). The sequences of the three Kentucky isolates were identical to each other, but differed by five bases from the sequence of the type strain (level of similarity, 99.6%). The levels

As it is in a lot of governments, responsibility for digital in Nova Scotia is split between different departments. On our trip we spent time with people from separate teams responsible for IT, communications and services. Between them, they have the skills, knowhow and organisational levers to deliver better public services at scale. But combining them is easier said than done. Having different political bosses, responsibilities, and offices all conspires to make it harder.. In government, a standard greeting from one official to another is Im the Grade x from the Department of y. Rank and ministry are classic identifiers; they define where you belong internally. But they arent that important. The public - your users - couldnt care less. Interestingly, governments also occasionally realise they dont matter that much. Those exceptions tend to be crises. When it really counts, everyone pitches in without a thought to whose turf theyre playing on. Sadly, the walls usually go back up when ...
