Background and Objectives In previous studies, obesity (measured according to the body mass index) has correlated inconsistently with the risk of biopsy-measured prostate cancer, and specifically high-grade prostate cancer. This meta-analysis aimed to clarify these correlations. Methods A comprehensive literature search of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases was conducted for relevant studies published through January 2014. The pooled estimates of odds ratios (OR) and confidence intervals (CI) were computed, and the meta-analysis was performed with the STATA software according to a random effects approach. High-grade serous ovarian cancer, also known as high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC), is the most common and deadliest type of ovarian cancer. HGSC appears to arise from the ovary, fallopian tube, or peritoneum. As most HGSC cases present with widespread peritoneal metastases, it is often not clear where HGSC truly originates. Traditionally, the ovarian surface epithelium (OSE) was long believed to be the origin of HGSC. Since the late 1990s, the fallopian tube epithelium has emerged as a potential primary origin of HGSC. Particularly, serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), a noninvasive tumor lesion formed preferentially in the distal fallopian tube epithelium, was proposed as a precursor for HGSC. Abstract. Endothelial cell-specific molecule 1 (ESM1) is a major prognostic marker of several tumor types, but its value as a marker for prostate cancer is unknown. The purpose of the present study was to measure the relationship of ESM1 expression with androgen receptor (AR) expression and with Gleason score in human prostate carcinoma tissue. Expression of ESM1 and AR were determined by immunohistochemical staining of prostate tissues from healthy individuals and patients with prostate cancer. The results showed that ESM1 expression was significantly higher in prostate tumor tissues than in normal prostate tissues (p , 0.01), and that ESM1 expression in prostate tumor tissue correlated with Gleason score (p , 0.016) and Gleason grade (p , 0.013). Mrs Frank,. So sorry to hear of your husbands situation. As you are well aware, a Gleason 4+5 is very serious, particularly with the suspicion of extra capsular extension. One thing your doctor should have explained to you about PSA readings for high Gleason scores...the cancer cells in high Gleason patients become incapable of producing much PSA. A low PSA with advanced prostate cancer is quite typical. As others have suggested, an ultra-sensitive PSA test may give you a better idea of what is going on. Your husband should not b e complacent because he now has a low PSA score...the low PSA is what advanced cancer cells produce. I am not sure that I understand your surgeons logic in opting to remove the prostate when the PSA stayed constant for a couple of readings. It is very, very difficult to remove all of the cancer by RP alone for a Gleason 9 patient, even when they go after the nerves, lymph nodes, and seminal vesicles.
