Here at Veterinary System Services, we are proud to be the first company to provide medical-grade laundry for the animal industry. Rather than a typical commercial laundry service, we hold ourselves to a higher standard when servicing veterinary practices. Most commercial laundry facilities do not put the same barriers in place to prevent contamination, or use cleaning agents specifically for working with animals, but we follow the CDC and OSHA's guidelines for medical laundry, in addition to adhering to AAHA standards, so now you have one less task.. We ensure that we maintain human hospital-grade hygienic standards to keep your patients safe, by subjecting our clean linens to monthly, third-party testing for contamination. Other commercial laundry services do not have the cleaning agents rated for leptospirosis or parvovirus, or understand the risks if linens infected with these highly contagious pathogens are not thoroughly sanitized. When you use the VSS laundry service, you can trust your ...
As a pediatric subspecialty, neonatology poses a special challenge for residents: rotations are short, but care for preterm and critically ill patients is complex. Despite residents brief exposure to neonatology, they're expected to have a good understanding of key concepts, diagnoses and therapies when they sit for the boards. Attendings often struggle with how best to teach these concepts, because residents don't always have exposure to the range of babies they need to see to have a good foundation in this area. Neonatology Case-Based Review addresses this information gap by presenting 112 case-based multiple-choice questions in neonatology. Cases are mapped to the American Board of Pediatrics Content Specifications for pediatric residents; the Review is appropriate for residents entering their neonatology rotation, as an introduction to the subspecialty, and again as they study for their boards. Answers include rationales so that the Review is a comprehensive teaching guide for attendings as ...
This course has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn. The causes, prevention, and management of mild to severe neonatal asphyxia are carefully explained so that health professionals may develop optimal knowledge and skill in resuscitation.. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is an educational program that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation. Completion of the program does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation. Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for someone to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.. Register Today. ...
The pattern of neonatal bacterial infections in the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH nursery was analysed over a three month period with a view of finding out the causative organisms and their antibiotic sensitivity pattern. Any suspected infected infant was subjected to a batch of bacterialogical investigations which included blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, rectal and umblical swab cultures. Other body surface swabs were taken as necessary. Predisposing factors were looked for. - Klebsiella and Esriherichia Coli were the commonest organisms incriminated in the aetiology of neonatal infections in this study, accounting for 38% of all isolates. Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus albus accounted for 27%. Aminoglycosides gave the best sensitivities against all gram negative organisms tested, with gentamycin being superior to Kanamycin. Lincomycin, chloramphenicol and minocycline gave the best sensitivities against gram positive organisms ...
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to provide an assessment of pediatric residency training in adolescent medicine. METHODS: We conducted 2 national surveys: 1 of pediatric residency program directors and the other of faculty who are responsible for the adolescent medicine block rotation for pediatric residents to elicit descriptive and qualitative information concerning the nature of residents' ambulatory care training experience in adolescent medicine and the workforce issues that affect the experience. RESULTS: Required adolescent medicine topics that are well covered pertain to normal development, interviewing, and sexual issues. Those least well covered concern the effects of violence, motor vehicle safety, sports medicine, and chronic illness. Shortages of adolescent medicine specialists, addictions counselors, psychiatrists, and other health professionals who are knowledgeable about adolescents frequently limit pediatric residency training in adolescent medicine. Considerable variation exists

The incubator's promotion of entrepreneurial development and the help of N.E. growth make its research have a strong practical significance. At the same time, concern for the sustainability of incubator development, the core of the problem lies in the ability to configure their incubator resources, that is, the level of incubating-efficiency. By DEA, HAC, In-depth interviews to discuss the situation in Zhejiang Province incubators, as well as influencing factors on incubating-efficiency and the improving path of the sample derived from the incubator in Zhejiang Province, which proposed a new hierarchical model and incubation Strategies for improving of incubating-efficiency.
Following the very successful joint meeting in 1994 of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (NASPGN) and the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) in Houston, Texas, a feeling of growing unity among the international pediatric gastroenterology societies emerged. The concept of holding a World Congress of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, at which these societies could hold a combined meeting, spawned simultaneously in North and South Americas, Australia, Asia, and Europe. In 1995, the then Presidents of the four Societies, Ronald Sokol of NASPGN, Ulysses Fagundes-Neto of the Latin American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (LASPGN), Samy Cadranel of ESPGHAN, and Geoff Cleghorn of the Asian Pan Pacific Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (APPSPGAN) began a series of meetings and discussions over the possibility that such a World Congress could be organized for ...
Jack Bloom MPL. DA Gauteng Health Spokesman. Labour unrest at the Masakhane state laundry in Pretoria has caused severe linen shortages in hospitals in Gauteng.. Workers at Masakhane went on strike today after weeks of go-slow action over grievances with the laundry management.. The workers allege that managers are selling jobs at the laundry, but nothing has been done about this.. This laundry has been plagued by labour and equipment problems for years.. Meanwhile, patients suffer because of the linen shortage.. Last week, for instance, a relative was asked to bring linen for her daughter at the Kalafong hospital in Pretoria.. The Gauteng Health Department must intervene urgently to ensure that allegations are probed at the Masakhane laundry, and productivity restore to ensure a reliable supply of clean linen to hospitals.. ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Auditory brain stem response (ABR) audiometry in the neonatal nursery. AU - Yellin, M. W.. PY - 1993/1/1. Y1 - 1993/1/1. N2 - Advances in audiologic technology make it possible to identify hearing loss in the neonatal nursery. With this opportunity, audiologists are able to test infants before hospital discharge. Neonatal hearing screening programs are becoming the standard of care in both well baby and intensive care nurseries. Some programs screen for hearing loss, whereas others carry out diagnostic threshold ABR testing. The most effective protocol seems to depend on individual program parameters and characteristics. Technological advances have provided audiologists with the ability to identify hearing loss reliably before 12 months of age. Governmental and professional position statements emphasize the importance of this endeavor. With concentrated effort, audiologists must accept this challenge and develop large-scale screening programs to identify hearing loss in neonates ...

OBJECTIVE. Endotracheal intubation of newborn infants is a mandatory competence for many pediatric trainees. The Neonatal Resuscitation Program recommends a 20-second limit for intubation attempts. Intubation attempts by junior doctors are frequently unsuccessful, and many infants are intubated between 20 and 30 seconds without apparent adverse effect. Little is known about the proficiency of more senior medical staff, the time taken to determine endotracheal tube (ETT) position, or the effects of attempted intubation on infants' heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (Spo2) in the delivery room (DR). The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the success rates and duration of intubation attempts during DR resuscitation, (2) whether experience is associated with greater success rates and shorter time taken to intubate, (3) the time taken to identify ETT position after intubation, and (4) the frequency with which infants deteriorated during intubation attempts and the time at which this ...

The school nurse functions as a leader and the coordinator of the school health services team. The team may also include a school physician, licensed practical nurses, health aides and clerical staff, school counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, and substance abuse counselors. The health team may also expand to create a coordinated school health team that integrates health services, health education, physical education, nutrition services, counseling/psychological/social services, healthy school environment, health promotion for staff, and family/community involvement.23 Occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists may also be part of the school health team. A pediatrician often fills the school physician role, because pediatricians are knowledgeable about general pediatrics, school health, and adolescent health. School physicians review guidelines, policies, and programs related to health care in schools. In some schools, a pediatric or ...
Two methods are described here using the radial artery, the most common site because of low complication rates. Methods can be adapted to other arteries. Another common site is the posterior tibial artery, as both the radial and posterior tibial arteries have good collateral circulation. Ulnar (to be used only in the absence of previous radial artery puncture attempt) and dorsalis pedis arteries are alternative sites. The temporal, brachial, and femoral arteries are not recommended. Axillary artery cannulation is very difficult and also not recommended. Temporal artery catheterization may have adverse neurologic sequelae. The brachial artery does not have good collateral flow and can have a lot of complications. Lateral or posterior wrist transillumination or Doppler/real-time ultrasound may be helpful in locating the artery in premature infants. Arterial catheterization requires patience ...
Cardiac tamponade secondary to a pericardial effusion. A rare but life-threatening complication of central venous catheters, including PICC and UVC. Incidence is 1% to 3%. Etiology is unclear, but proposed causes include a direct puncture of a vessel or myocardium (areas of weakness and incomplete muscularization may occur in neonates) by the catheter tip during insertion or delayed perforation secondary to erosion of the cardiac or vascular wall. Keep a high index of clinical suspicion in a neonate who has a central line and suddenly has cardiovascular collapse that does not respond to resuscitation or has resistance to external cardiac compressions and has no air leak by thoracic transillumination. Possible signs include hypotension, tachycardia, decreased/diminished heart signs, poor perfusion, decreasing arterial saturation, decreased heart sounds, increased jugular venous pressure (very difficult to assess in an infant), pulseless electrical activity with a central line, and pulsus ...

The Department of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) plans to partner with the Indian Health Service (IHS) to create a pediatric specialty consultation service using telehealth for American Indian and Alaska Native children served by IHS.. As the first step, IHS and CHOP will develop a comprehensive pediatric telemedicine plan for communities in the IHS Navajo, Phoenix, Tucson and Albuquerque areas. The goal is to create a model for physician-to-physician consultation services. CHOP doctors will provide advice to IHS health care providers on challenging and unusual cases, including diagnoses and courses of treatment.. "Access to pediatric specialty care is limited across much of the United States, with many communities experiencing delays in both consultation and service," Joseph St. Geme, M.D., physician-in-chief and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, said in a statement. "As a result of this important initiative, ...
Vaccination Report: Why hepatitis B vaccine for all children?. Nineteen states have passed laws requiring three doses of hepatitis B vaccine for all healthy children. Most 12-hour-old newborns can't leave the newborn nurseries of hospitals without being injected with hepatitis B virus vaccine.. Why?. Not content with using the hepatitis B vaccine in high risk populations such as IV drug users, prostitutes, prisoners and sexually promiscuous adults for which this vaccine was created, drug companies and officials at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have targeted vulnerable newborns in the first moments of life to find a larger and more reliable market for their produce.. Using the justification that babies born to mothers infected with hepatitis B disease have an 85-95% risk of developing chronic hepatitis B infection and promoting the idea that injecting all healthy babies with hepatitis B vaccine will protect them when they are teenagers and become sexually active, CDC officials have ...

Nymphs from each of the four populations were put in tubes made from nylon mesh (250 μm diameter) that were 3 cm diameter, 13 cm high and glued at the base to a 3 cm diameter Petri dish. Each tube was filled with 1.5 cm of wet sand, then 1 cm of damp moss, to provide a moist environment where ticks could rehydrate if necessary as they would in nature. Immediately after adding the ticks, the tops of the tubes were sealed. Twelve tubes, each with 30 nymphs (i.e., 360 nymphs in total per site), were used for each population, except for the North Wales population that had 10 tubes (i.e., 300 nymphs in total) due to fewer ticks collected from that site.. The mesh tubes containing ticks from the UK sites were allocated equally between two portable incubators (Memmert IPP 200; Memmert, Schwabach, Germany). In order to control for any potential variation in conditions between the two incubators, an equal proportion of tubes from each population were allocated to each incubator, and the temperature and ...

Introduction To evaluate the impact of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms in women with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Material and methods One-hundred and fifty women underwent an overnight polysomnography study between May 2014 and September 2014. Their voiding symptoms were evaluated using the OAB symptom score (OABSS) and International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short-Form at OSAS diagnosis and approximately 3-months after CPAP therapy. OSAS severity was assessed according to the apnea-hypopnea-index. Results We evaluated 140 women and 111 of them (79.3%) reported symptoms consistent with OAB. There were no statistically significant differences between OSAS severity with a prevalence of OAB (p = 0.92). The prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) was 35.7% (n = 50) and 39.6% (n = 44) in all patients and patients with OAB, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences between UI with OAB (p = ...

Major scientific advances in prenatal and neonatal physiology have provided the basis for improved outcomes for preterm and other infants with disorders causing respiratory failure. Critical for the improved diagnosis and treatment of preterm infants was the recognition of the importance of the pulmonary surfactant system in the pathogenesis of respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants. Dr Whitsett and colleagues in the Division of Neonatology, Perinatal and Pulmonary Biology, with many collaborators worldwide, have focused their attention on the molecular basis of lung formation, maturation and function for more than three decades. Initial questions regarding the regulation of surfactant synthesis and secretion in newborn infants led to the identification and study of the structure and function of the surfactant proteins [SP-A, SP-B, SP-C and SP-D] and the genes encoding them. The critical and distinct roles of each of the surfactant proteins in surfactant homeostasis and innate immunity ...

The newborns in intensive and/or intermediate care units are considerably susceptible to acquire hospital infections of several microrganisms (Pujol et al. 1994, Haley et al. 1995). Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has emerged over the past 30 years as an important cause of hospital infections and is actually an organism that is frequently transmitted in hospitals and perinatal units (Haley et al. 1982, Boyce et al. 1994, Na'Was et al. 1998). Outbreaks causing several pathological problems to the newborns and mothers have been reported (Pujol et al. 1996, Corbella et al. 1997). The MRSA is considered a public health problem in neonatology because of its strong potential for dissemination in the wards, high levels of antibiotic resistance, associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality (Soares et al. 1997, Tambic et al. 1997, Conterno et al. 1998).. The prevalence of MRSA in Brazil is considered elevated, specially in large hospitals (Branchini et al. 1993, Sader et al. ...
Between 2012 and 2015, the number of chemical burns to the eye associated with laundry detergent pods increased more than 30-fold among preschool-aged children in the U.S., according to a study published online by JAMA Ophthalmology.. The widespread adoption of laundry detergent pods, which are dissolvable pouches containing enough laundry detergent for a single use, has led to an increase in associated injuries among children. Reports of pod-related injuries, including poisoning, choking, and burns, have suggested that this pattern may be in part due to the products' colorful packaging and candy-like appearance.. R. Sterling Haring, D.O., M.P.H., of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, and colleagues examined the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS; run by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) for the period 2010-2015 for eye injuries resulting in chemical burn or conjunctivitis among children age 3 to 4 years (i.e., preschool-aged children).. Auriculotemporal or Frey syndrome is characterized mainly by recurrent episodes of facial gustatory flushing and/or sweating, limited to the cutaneous distribution of the auriculotemporal nerve. Although relatively common in adults following injury to the auriculotemporal nerve or parotid disease, the condition has rarely been reported in children. Moreover, in childhood, auriculotemporal syndrome has been described mainly in infancy and early childhood as a sequel of perinatal birth trauma resulting from assisted forceps delivery. An unusual presentation of auriculotemporal syndrome in late childhood as gustatory flushing mimicking food allergy. Adverse food reactions are common complaints to the general pediatrician. True hypersensitivity reactions are only a small part of the overall incidence of reactions. Other conditions that are initially thought to be food allergies include enzyme deficiencies, food poisoning, and pharmacologic agents in foods. Awareness of this variant is essential for ...
Ticks can transmit a number of diseases to children; these include bacterial (Lyme, RMSF, ehrlichiosis, tularemia), protozoal (babesiosis), and viral (Colorado tick fever) pathogens. The index of suspicion for tick-borne pathogens should be high in children with unexplained fever or dermatologic findings: a child's play or other activities may put them at higher risk of contact with ticks than adults; the history of tick exposure infrequently is elicited; even if a child notes a tick, tick removal may not occur promptly or thoroughly; and children may become more ill with certain tick-borne diseases than adults. ...

In: Proceedings, Aquaculture America Conference, March 1-5, 2010. p. 445 Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) egg masses are typically incubated in baskets that are suspended within metal troughs with water that is agitated and pushed around the eggs with paddles. A limiting factor in the successful incubation of channel catfish eggs is the absorption of oxygen to the developing embryos; sub-optimal levels of dissolved oxygen in the water results in premature hatching and increased deformities and mortality of developing catfish eggs. We designed and tested the ability of a new vertical-lift incubator (the "See-Saw") to incubate channel catfish egg masses. Angle-aluminum racks were placed inside paired adjacent hatchery troughs with three hinged-lid baskets positioned in each rack. The racks were ...

Background & aim: Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth plays a pivotal role in proper breastfeeding and mother-infant interaction. Despite numerous benefits of mother-infant skin-to-skin contact, this health behavior is not performed by many midwives. This study aimed to evaluate the influential factors for mother-infant skin-to-skin contact based on the Precede-Proceed model from the perspective of midwives in Torbat Heydariyeh hospitals. Methods:This cross-sectional study was conducted on 50 midwives working in hospitals of Torbat Heydariyeh, Iran in 2015. Demographic data of all participants were collected, and Mother-Newborn Skin-to-Skin Contact Questionnaire was also used based on the Precede-Proceed model. Data analysis was performed in SPSS V.16 using descriptive statistics, tables and graphs. Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is the most common cardiovascular condition afflicting premature neonates especially those born extremely low birth weight (ELBW). Despite five decades of scientific inquiry which has produced thousands of publications including over 65 randomized controlled trials, cardiologists, neonatologists, and surgeons still cannot answer simple questions such as if, when and how to close to the PDA in ELBW infants. This chapter will examine current evidence in order to answer these fundamental questions. The chapter will specifically focus on transcatheter PDA closure (TCPC), which albeit a new therapy, has displayed great potential to be the best therapeutic option in the future. It is about time that physicians from all sub-specialties come together and integrate the evidence to develop a management algorithm for ELBW infants with hemodynamically significant PDA.
