Nutritional Modulation of Resistance and Resilience to Gastrointestinal Nematode Infection - A Review - Nutrition;Immunity;Resistance;Gastrointestinal;Nematode;Nematodiasis;
The effects of non-genetic factors on responses to gastrointestinal nematode infections were examined in artificially infected indigenous Horro and Menz lambs in the central highlands of Ethiopia. The experiment involved lambs of two sexes, infection and monitoring regimens (3 levels), dam parity (4 levels) and birth types (2 levels). A total of 152 weaner lambs (103 Menz and 49 Horro) were used. Endoparasite challenge involved three infection periods (primary, secondary and tertiary) each separated by an anthelmintic treatment. Data were collected on faecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), worm count, and weight gain. Female lambs were found to harbor lower numbers of T. colubriformis counts and had lower (p , 0.01) FEC in tertiary infection compared to males. Younger animals were more susceptible to the nematode infections than older animals as measured by all the parameters studied (p , 0.01). Twins had higher FEC in both secondary and tertiary infections compared to singles. Lambs ...
English: In this study, I tested the effect of winter supplemental feeding of moose (Alces alces) on gastrointestinal parasite infection in two counties in Norway, by comparing faecal egg counts of moose which used and did not use feeding stations. I identified three different GI nematodes based on egg morphology; Trichostrongylidae spp., Nematodirus spp. and Trichuris spp. All species were found in Hedmark while in Telemark I found only Trichuris spp. Prevalence of Trichostrogylidae spp. and Nematodirus spp. varied significantly depending on year sampled, and age class and month, respectively. Age class, year and body mass significantly affected intensity of Trichostrogylidae spp. infection. Trichostrogylidae spp. abundance was higher in 2009 when weather conditions were more challenging, and decreased with increasing body mass. Adult moose had a higher intensity of infection than juvenile moose and female juvenile moose had lower abundances than male juvenile moose. Use of feeding stations did ...
TY - GEN. T1 - The Influence of Track Elasticity when travelling on a Railway Turnout. AU - Lagos Cereceda, Rodrigo. AU - San Emeterio, Albi. AU - Vinolas, Jordi. AU - Alonso, A.. AU - Aizpun, M.. PY - 2014. Y1 - 2014. N2 - In recent years, different transport systems have been largely improved. However, some problems still need to be solved if railways want to be the transport of the future. Among these are the high cost of infrastructure and its maintenance, the requirements to assure low noise levels and low transmission of vibrations in the areas close to the track and stations. Turnouts, one of the most critical elements on the track, are studied in this paper. Mathematical models were developed in order to conduct a detailed analysis of a vehicle passing through a turnout. These models were used to implement multibody models, which reproduce the phenomena involved in vehicle/turnout interaction. The research analyses the validity and accuracy of multibody tools and how they can be used to ...

Whether a dancer has too much or too little, turnout can be one of the most frustrating aspects of technique. Students often feel they must achieve 180-degree rotation to become successful in the field. In reality, the average person only has 45 degrees of external rotation in each leg, meaning their first position should be no greater than 90 degrees.. Because range of motion in the hip is ultimately determined by the joints structure, it is impossible for dancers to increase their structural turnout. Often, though, students do not use what they have to the greatest potential. By maximizing their mobility they will find greater ease within movement, improve lines and, most important, prevent injuries caused by forcing the joints.. Deborah Vogel, co-founder of the Center for Dance Medicine in New York City, says the best way to unlock external rotation is to balance out muscle strength and flexibility. Dancers are working the turnout all the time. Theyre always engaged and focused so much on ...

by John Wilmer. CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A mass H1N1 flu vaccination clinic was held in Cedar Rapids Friday, but it wasnt the turnout many people were expecting. Linn County Public Health started out with 1,545 doses of the H1N1 flu mist and only administered 645 doses during the five hour clinic. Health officials say they are surprised by the small turnout, but are pleased that several hundred people are now vaccinated.. Some parents like Victoria Fosmo were surprised to find out a clinic this size was taking place, but shes glad she got her children vaccinated.. All the forms of flu are dangerous, but the deaths are hitting the kids this safe so didnt want to miss this one, said Fosmo.. We really anticipated that we would have maybe a couple of thousand people turn out and demand this vaccine. We havent quite had that, its been a little bit less than what we anticipated, said Curtis Dickson, the Director of Linn County Public Health.. Another mass vaccination for h1n1 will not take ...

When a veterinarian performs a fecal egg count (FEC) exam, they are looking to establish how many parasite eggs are present in each gram of manure tested--yielding a result called eggs per gram, or EPG. There are no universal standard EPG measures considered good or bad. However, traditionally a horse with an EPG value of 200 to 500 would be considered a candidate for treatment. In a herd, an average EPG value between all horses of 100 to 300 has long been considered the threshold between normal and unusual levels of parasite infestation. ... With Brexit being a hot topic and the Prime Minister having published her White Paper setting out the key priorities for negotiations, I held an open forum in Thame Town Hall on Monday night (13 February) to listen to the key questions and concerns of constituents going forward. There was a good turnout with some 40 people in attendance and some interesting points were raised. The meeting was good humoured.. I said. There is a great deal of confusion over what has been going on and one of the first questions was for me to provide some clarity on the situation. During discussion some interesting points were raised and it is helpful for me to know what is uppermost in peoples minds as debates and discussions move forward. I am grateful to those who came along to share their thoughts with me.. Among the topics raised were questions on familiar issues such as immigration, free movement, the single market, the environment and finance as well as some detailed questions on specific issues.. Expulsion of the gastrointestinal nematode Trichuris muris is mediated by a T helper 2 type response involving IL-4 and IL-13. Here we show that Th1 response-associated susceptibility is dependent on activation signals mediated by MyD88 and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). TLR4- and MyD88-deficient mice are highly resistant to chronic T. muris infection and develop strong antigen-specific Th2 responses in mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues. Hence, TLR4 and MyD88 are involved not only in the development of pro-inflammatory responses against bacterial pathogens but are also crucially involved in responses against multicellular organisms such as helminths. These results provide the first demonstration of the critical role of TLR4 and MyD88 in bridging the innate and acquired immune response during gastrointestinal nematode infection.. ...
Other genera. The other minor parasite species in terms of severity and prevalence of infection are from the genera Bunostomum, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, Ostertagia, Toxocara and Strongyloides (Table 1). Except in calves in the high-rainfall highveld region, Bunostomum phlebotomum has been found in low numbers (Moyo et al. 1996). Similarly, the prevalence of Oesophagostomum radiatum and Toxocara vitulorum has been found to be low (Moyo et al. 1996; Pfukenyi et al. 2007). As expected, infection with Strongyloides papillosus is confined to calves less than eight months of age due to their immature immune status (Pandey et al. 1993; Vassilev 1999; Moyo et al. 1996; Pfukenyi et al. 2007). Ostertagia ostertagi (Moyo et al. 1996) and Nematodirus species (Obwolo et al. 1992) have been reported on an irrigated farm and a communal farming area in the highveld region, respectively. Jooste (1989) also reported Nematodirus species in cattle, but the origin of the animals was not given. Nematodirus ...

While surveys in Southern Africa indicate anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes to be common in small ruminants in South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe, there have been no reports of resistance in Zambia. The objective of this study was to determine whether anthelmintic resistance occurs in Zambia, and to obtain information on nematode control practices in the country. During the rainy season six commercial sheep farms were selected in and around Lusaka and Chisamba. Worm control practices were gauged by means of a questionnaire, and the Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test was performed for assessing anthelmintic efficacy of albendazole, levamisole and ivermectin. On all farms, anthelmintic treatment was the only approach used to control nematode infections. Frequency of treatment varied from twice a year to every 6 weeks and drugs of different anthelmintic groups were alternated within the same year. There was a wide range in faecal egg counts of individual sheep before treatment, with ...
The use of Duddingtonia flagrans as a tool for the biological control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) is a promising alternative to anthelmintics. The chlamydospores of D. flagrans are orally dosed and their thick cell wall gives them the capacity to resist digestion and pass through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Chlamydospores reaching the faeces are able to germinate and trap nematode larvae. The efficacy of this control method is based on reducing the numbers of infective larvae leaving the faeces. Techniques have recently been developed for quantifying the numbers of chlamydospores in faeces. As the number of non-digested spores could be relevant in the design and optimization of dosing programmes for the control of GIN infective larvae, the aim of the present study was to estimate the loss of D. flagrans chlamydospores during their passage through the ruminant gastrointestinal tract using in vitro and in vivo techniques. After in vitro rumen digestion, chlamydospore recovery was not
The intestinal epithelium is rich in γδ T cells and the gut is a site of residence for a wide variety of pathogens, including nematodes. Although CD4+ T-cell receptor (TCR) -αβ+ T helper type 2 T cells are essential for the expulsion of intestinal nematodes, little information is available on the function of γδ T cells in this type of infection. Here, we demonstrate two major functions of γδ T cells as a potently protective T-cell population against Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection using γδ T-cell-deficient (TCR-δ(-/-) ) mice. First, γδ T cells are required to initiate rapid expulsion of adult worms from the intestine and to limit egg production. Second, γδ T cells prevent the pathological intestinal damage associated with nematode infection, evident by increased clinical disease and more severe microscopic lesions in infected TCR-δ(-/-) mice. γδ T-cell deficiency led to delayed goblet cell hyperplasia in association with reduced expression of phosphorylated STAT6, MUC2, Trefoil

Gastrointestinal nematode infections are one of the main health/economic issues in sheep industries, worldwide. Indicator traits for resistance such as faecal egg count (FEC) are commonly used in genomic studies; however, published results are inconsistent among breeds. Meta (or joint)-analysis is a tool for aggregating information from multiple independent studies. The aim of this study was to identify loci underlying variation in FEC, as an indicator of nematode resistance, in a joint analysis using data from three populations (Scottish Blackface, Sarda × Lacaune and Martinik Black-Belly × Romane), genotyped with the ovine 50k SNP chip. The trait analysed was the average animal effect for Strongyles and Nematodirus FEC data. Analyses were performed with regional heritability mapping (RHM), fitting polygenic effects with either the whole genomic relationship matrix or matrices excluding the chromosome being interrogated. Across-population genomic covariances were set to zero. After quality control,
A study was carried out from 1992 to 1996 to compare the resistance to naturally acquired gastro intestinal (GI) nematode parasite infections (predominantly Haemonchus contortus) of Galla and Small East African goats in the sub humid coastal region of Kenya. A total of 204 Galla and 349 Small East African (SEA) kids were born from five kiddings. These were the progeny of 18 Galla and 17 SEA bucks. Live weights (LWT), blood packed cell volume (PCV) and faecal egg count (FEC) were recorded at 1 to 2 month intervals from birth to about 14 months of age. The SEA kids were more resistant to GI nematode parasites than Galla kids as shown by their significantly lower FEC (P , 0.001) in the post weaning period (8 to 14 month old kids) and lower mortality from birth to 14 months of age (P , 0.05). There was no significant (P , 0.05) breed effect on PCV, but Galla kids were significantly heavier (P , 0.001) at all measurement times between birth and 14 months of age. Heritability estimates for LWT, PCV ...
Age, income and educational attainment are significant factors affecting voter turnout. Educational attainment is perhaps the best predictor of voter turnout, and in the 2008 election those holding advanced degrees were three times more likely to vote than those with less than high school education. Income correlated well with likelihood of voting as well, although this may be because of a correlation between income and educational attainment, rather than a direct effect of income. Age difference is associated with youth voter turnout. Berman and Johnsons (2000)[2] argument affirms that age is an important factor in understanding voting blocs and differences on various issues. Young people are typically plagued by political apathy and thus do not have strong political opinions (The Economist, 2014). As strong political opinions may be considered one of the reasons behind voting (Munsey, 2008), political apathy among young people is arguably a predictor for low voter turnout. Pomante and ...
A recent national survey on anthelmintic resistance in cattle and sheep in New Zealand indicated that the magnitude of the problem has increased from very low levels only a few years ago to disturbingly high levels now. There is a particular problem with multiple resistance to all three action families of anthelmintic currently available in Ostertagia (= Teladorsagia) spp in sheep, and to both macrocyclic lactones (ML) and benzimidazoles in Cooperia spp in cattle. The prevalence and extent of resistance indicate that all cattle farmers and most sheep farmers should now be using a combination anthelmintic on most occasions just to achieve effective control of all parasites. Despite this, die presence of resistant parasites has generally not been appreciated by the majority of affected farmers, possibly because most have not formally tested to determine die resistance status of nematodes on their farms. Anthelmintics will remain the cornerstone of gastrointestinal nematode control in sheep and ...
Alternative Control Methods of Gastrointestinal Nematode Infections in Small Ruminants: Biological Method and Use of Medicinal Plant Extracts. Ermias Worku1*, Ashenafi Kiros1,Hagos Asgedom1, Biniam Tadesse1 1National Animal Health Research Center, P.O.Box 04, Sebeta, Ethiopia. 2College of Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture, Addis Ababa University, Debreziet, Ethiopia. Abstract. Diseases caused by gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in livestock are a major production constraint, causing economic losses, especially in small ruminants in the tropics and subtropics. The infection of sheep and goats by nematodes is rampant in most African countries, where the environmental conditions are conducive to nematode growth and transmission. In general, GINs reduce productivity of small ruminants due to lowering fertility, reduction in milk production and loss of weight when feed intake is reduced. Currently, the conventional control strategy for GIN infections is the use of synthetic anthelmintic drugs. ...

ay for 2.5 weeks before parturition. Litter size was recorded at parturition. The worm burden was determined and mucosal tissue samples for local immune cells collected at weeks +1 and +3 relative to parturition, with five animals slaughtered at each time from each group. The animals in the high protein group had a lower faecal egg count (FEC), lower worm burdens of T. circumcincta and T. colubriformis, more intestinal mucosal mast cells and globule leukocytes than their low protein counterparts. Single bearing ewes lost less bodyweight after lambing, had a lower FEC and more intestinal globule leukocytes than multiple bearing ewes. A significant interaction of protein treatment x litter size on FEC showed that single bearing ewes fed the high protein level markedly suppressed FEC. Vaccination induced a higher parasite specific antibody response (in serum total antibody, IgE and IgA, and saliva total antibody and IgA) in the vaccination period. The vaccinated animals also had a lower number of ...
Insects are a typical parasite that can mess up large numbers of our pets including canines, felines, and even hares. They are aggravating and bothersome, and any pet influenced by bugs will ordinarily cause agonizing skin wounds because of scratching. In youthful little dogs and cats, they can even suck sufficient blood to cause paleness. A few pets with Flea Allergic Dermatitis are especially delicate to bug salivation, so whenever chomped they will build up an extreme skin response. Customary precaution insect treatment is especially significant for touchy pets to shield them from creating skin issues. So, you need to protect your dog by dog Parasite Control service. Mites There are various bugs that may influence your pet. The vermin Sarcoptes and Demodex are the ones most normally known, which can proceed to cause extreme skin sores in canines, yet there are different parasites that cause skin issues and ear issues in felines, hares, and different pets. Alongside causing bothersome and ...

The effects of non-lethal parasites may be felt most strongly when hosts engage in intense, energy-demanding behaviors. One such behavior is fighting with conspecifics, which is common among territorial animals, including many beetle species. We examined the effects of parasites on the fighting ability of a saproxylic beetle, the horned passalus (Odontotaenius disjunctus, Family: Passalidae), which is host to a non-lethal nematode, Chondronema passali. We pitted pairs of randomly-chosen (but equally-weighted) beetles against each other in a small arena and determined the winner and aggression level of fights. Then we examined beetles for the presence, and severity of nematode infections. There was a non-significant tendency (p = 0.065) for the frequency of wins, losses and draws to differ between beetles with and without C. passali; non-parasitized individuals (n = 104) won 47% of their fights while those with the parasite (n = 88) won 34%, a 13% difference in wins. The number of nematodes in a beetle
Resistance and resilience to naturally acquired gastro-intestinal (GI) nematode parasite infections (predominantly Haemonchus contortus) were studied in 1785 lambs born over six lambings (1991 to 1996) consisting of 212 Red Maasai, 311 Dorper and 1262 crossbred (Red Maasai-Dorper) lambs in the sub-humid coastal region of Kenya. These lambs were the progeny of 41 Dorper and 35 Red Maasai rams. Live weights (LWT), blood packed cell volume (PCV) and faecal egg counts (FEC) were recorded at 1- to 2-monthly intervals from birth until the lambs were about one year of age. Red Maasai were more resistant and resilient post weaning to infections with GI nematodes than Dorper lambs as shown by their significantly lower FEC and their significantly higher PCV, respectively. An increasing proportion of Red Maasai genes in the crossbred lambs was associated with decreased FEC and higher PCV, but there was no heterosis for logarithm-transformed FEC (LFEC) or PCFrom one month of age Red Maasai lambs were ...
One of my colleagues did her honours (kind of like a one year practice PhD, I dont know if its done anywhere outside of Australia) looking at Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection in mice. Apparently you can find them in the lung but nobody could work out how the worm got from the site of infection to the lung. Anywho, they used whole animal bioluminescent imaging to track the worms throughout infection. They were trying to do it in both real-time for the acute infection and by compiled photos to map the migration over longer time frames. I dont think it worked very well but its fascinating technology. ...

Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism in animals is considered as one of the major problems in India causing recurring economic losses to livestock production system owing to morbidity and mortality. But data pertaining to epidemiology of GI nematodes in goats is meager from Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. Therefore, the present investigation was carried out to study the incidence of GI nematodes in goats in and around Mhow and accordingly a total of 900 faecal samples of goats were collected from Mhow and its adjoining areas and faecal sample examination revealed the incidence of strongyle, Strongyloides papillosus, Trichuris spp ...
Equine gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) have been the subject of intermittent studies in Australia over the past few decades. However, comprehensive information on the epidemiology of equine GINs, the efficacy of available anthelmintic drugs and the prevalence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in Australasia is lacking. Herein, we have systematically reviewed existing knowledge on the horse GINs recorded in Australia, and main aspects of their pathogeneses, epidemiology, diagnoses, treatment and control. Six electronic databases were searched for publications on GINs of Australian horses that met our inclusion criteria for the systematic review. Subsets of publications were subjected to review epidemiology, diagnoses, pathogeneses, treatment and control of GINs of horses from Australia. A total of 51 articles published between 1950 to 2018 were included. The main GINs reported in Australian horses were cyathostomins (at least 28 species), Draschia megastoma, Habronema muscae, H. majus, Oxyuris equi,

We find in particular that the spatial correlation of turnout rates decay logarithmically with distance in all cases. This result is quantitatively reproduced by a decision model that assumes that each voter makes his mind as a result of three influence terms: one totally idiosyncratic component, one city-specific term with short-ranged fluctuations in space, and one long-ranged correlated field which propagates diffusively in space. A detailed analysis reveals several interesting features: for example, different countries have different degrees of local heterogeneities and seem to be characterized by a different propensity for individuals to conform to the cultural norm. We furthermore find clear signs of herding (i.e., strongly correlated decisions at the individual level) in some
Forcing your turnout can affect numerous parts of the body, not just your knees. When you wrench your knees, ankles and feet into a position thats beyond their natural limits, you put extra pressure on your bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles in order to hold them there. This affects your entire alignment, causing you to grip and compensate. Dr. John Brummer, a podiatric surgeon who consults with the School at Steps in New York City, says that forcing your turnout can irritate and inflame the ligaments around the ankle joint. When you push your ankle bones against those ligaments, you put undue pressure on them, causing a strain injury, he says. Icing your ankles after class, as well as taking anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen, can ease your symptoms. You should also make an appointment with a podiatrist or orthopedist to get an official diagnosis and, if necessary, a prescription for physical therapy. ...
Many causes have been proposed for this decline; a combination of factors is most likely. When asked why they do not vote, many people report that they have too little free time. However, over the last several decades, studies have consistently shown that the amount of leisure time has not decreased. According to a study by the Heritage Foundation, Americans report on average an additional 7.9 hours of leisure time per week since 1965. Furthermore, according to a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, increases in wages and employment actually decrease voter turnout in gubernatorial elections and do not affect national races. Potential voters perception that they are busier is common and might be just as important as a real decrease in leisure time. Geographic mobility has increased over the last few decades. There are often barriers to voting in a district where one is a recent arrival, and a new arrival is likely to know little about the local candidate and local issues. Francis ...
Turnout means the total number of people who show up to vote or gather for an event. The success of democratic elections depends on voter turnout - how many people actually get out and vote.

At least 210 winning candidates for mayor obtained more than 80 percent, and about 40 others, from 90 to 100 percent of total votes cast in May 2019. In contrast, 141 other winners in the mayoral race secured less than 50 percent of the voter turnout in their respective areas. A few others bagged an even lower share of the votes at 26,7 percent, while two other candidates obtained more than 99 percent of the voter turnout. They ran and won in Pantao Ragat, Lanao del Norte (99.3 percent), and in Picong, Lanao del Sur (99.0 percent).. In two other areas, though, Comelec data showed an apparent irregularity with data entries: Two candidates for mayor reportedly obtained votes that far exceeded the total voter turnout or the number of votes actually cast in their areas.. In contrast, only 334 winning candidates for mayor (20.4 percent of total) obtained 50 percent or less of the voter turnout in their respective cities and municipalities. The lowest percentage of votes obtained vs. voter turnout was ...
Friday, April 26, 2013 Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, have shown in a mouse model that infection with nematodes (also known as roundworms) can not only combat obesity but ameliorate related metabolic disorders. Their research is published ahead of print online in the journal Infection and Immunity.. Gastrointestinal nematodes infect approximately 2 billion people worldwide, and some researchers believe up until the 20th century almost everyone had worms. In developed countries there is a decreasing incidence of nematode infection but a rising prevalence of certain types of autoimmunity, suggesting a relationship between the two. Nematode infection has been purported to have therapeutic effects and currently clinical trials are underway to examine worms as a treatment for diseases associated with the relevant cytokines, including inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and allergies.. In the study researchers tested the effect of nematode ...

The suitability of a single mid-season targeted selective treatment (TST) for gastrointestinal nematodes control, based on flexible average daily weight gain (ADWG) thresholds, was investigated in 23 groups of first grazing season calves. In each group, animals were weighed three times: before turnout, at mid-season and at housing. Just after the first weighing, each group was divided in two homogenous sub-groups in terms of age, breed and weight, and randomly allocated to one of two sub-groups intented for two different mid-season anthelmintic treatment strategies: (1) a treatment of all calves composing the sub-group (whole-group treatment (WT)) or (2) a targeted selective weight gain-based treatment (TST) of the animals showing an individual pre-treatment ADWG inferior to the mean pre-treatment ADWG of the corresponding WT sub-group ...
Downloadable! During last sixty years, Turkish population moved from one province to another at the rate of about 7-8 percent per five-year interval. As a consequence of this massive internal migration, population residing in a province other than the one they were born in increased from 12 percent in 1950 to 39 percent in 2011. Impact of this population instability on provincial turnout rates in 2011 parliamentary election is studied, controlling for the effects of other socio-economic, demographic, political and institutional factors. Consequences of migration both at destinations and origins are considered. According to robust regressions estimated, the relationship between turnout and education is inverse U-shaped, and between turnout and age, U-shaped. The latter reflects generational differences as well. Large population, large number parliament members to be elected from a constituency, participation by large number of parties, and existence of a dominant party depress the turnout rate. A

In classical ballet, turn-out almost always involves both legs. The only exceptions are: during a piece of choreography, during a pas de couru, or during a bourrée in sixth position. Also, turn-out is only as good as the ability to rotate the leg on the side with less rotation, since the turned-out position must be equal and opposite. For example, in first position, one leg (foot) should not turn-out more than the other. It must be equal. For dancers whose turn-out is significantly different on one side, extra mental attention should be given to improving the rotation on the weaker side during class, along with adding extra exercises outside of class ...
