This thesis investigated theories regarding the neurobiological substrates of conflict resolution in rodents. An operant biconditional discrimination task was used that modelled elements of response conflict similar to that observed in the human Stroop task. Correct performance required the use of incidental (context) cues to guide performance during compound cues that signalled conflicting responses. This task was used to test hypotheses related to the role of dopamine, the frontal cortex and hippocampus in conflict resolution. In addition, a transgenic mouse model of frontotemporal dementia (tau V337M) was used to assess the effects of this mutation on frontal cortex-dependent conflict resolution. The first set of experiments examined the effects of dopaminergic agonists (d- amphetamine and phencyclidine) on conflict resolution in rats. It was found that the modulation of dopamine tone generally disrupted conditional responding as opposed to selectively disrupting conflict resolution. In order ...
Negotiation skills are essential for team leads, tech leads, and project managers. As they gain seniority, these folks frequently find themselves thrust into both formal negotiations with vendors and suppliers as well as informal negotiations with management and their own staff, often without benefit of much preparation or training in the art and science of negotiation.

Whether looking to buy or sell a home, learning the other partys true real estate motivation can lead to especially profitable negotiation. Theres an old negotiation strategy that says that the first person to name price and terms loses the negotiation. But thats not always true!. EXAMPLE: A number of years ago, I wanted to sell my condominium so I could buy the house where I now live. Based on recent sales prices in the condo complex, my listing agent (the late, great Betsy White) suggested a $121,000 asking price. It was two or three thousand dollars above the last sale price of a comparable unit, thus allowing room for negotiation on the price and terms. A week or two later, Betsy obtained a $114,000 purchase offer from a strong buyer. It was all-cash with no contingencies, not even a mortgage finance contingency. She advised me, "I think this buyer will come up a few thousand dollars if you want to make a counteroffer." Knowing I had only paid $70,000 for that condo, I had a nice, ...

The Carter Center Conflict Resolution Program works to prevent and resolve deadly conflicts by monitoring early warnings in fragile states and through timely, targeted, and impartial interventions. When possible and appropriate, rapid-response interventions--negotiations, mediations, or facilitation--are accomplished through the personal involvement of President and Mrs. Carter, with the support of program staff. In other instances, senior staff conduct interventions with support from senior diplomats around the world. We also engage in sustained post-conflict peacebuilding to promote reconciliation and the restoration of the rule of law. Additionally, the program targets challenging contemporary issues of international peace and security not addressed by other institutions. Learn More ...

The HDP maintained talks with Abdullah Öcalan, from this talks Öcalan give a message to the congress stating that "We have never considered our movement apart from Turkeys revolutionary and socialist movements. We have always regarded ourselves as an integral part of this outcome" and "we have to consider the HDP as an integral part of the historical democratic dialogue and negotiation process. If socialism and an open democracy succeed in Turkey, it will be closely related to this democratic negotiation process.".[42] Öcalans niece Dilek Öcalan and Öcalans nephew Öcalan Urfadan were among the HDP parliamentary candidates.[43] The relationship between the HDP and the PKK has been put forward by the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) as a reason why it would be better for the HDP to not gain representation in Parliament, though government journalists alleged that this would result in greater violence by the PKK and attempts to establish a separate parliament in ...

We live in a bimoral society, in which people govern their lives by two contrasting sets of principles. On the one hand there are the principles associated with traditional morality. Although these allow a modicum of self-interest, their emphasis is on our duties and obligations to others: to treat people honestly and with respect, to treat them fairly and without prejudice, to help and are for them when needed, and ultimately, to put their needs above their own. On the other (...) hand there are the principles associated with the entrepreneurial self-interest. These also impose obligations, but of a much more limited kind. Their emphasis is competitive rather than cooperative: to advance our own interests rather than to meet the needs of others. Both sets of principles have always been present in society but in recent years, traditional moral authorities have lost much of their force and the morality of self-interest has acquired a much greater social legitimacy, over a much wider field of ...

This paper argues against a view of curriculum as a means for moulding students into, and making teachers accountable for, something pre-determined and singularly governed by qualification demands of the labour market. It makes a case for the value of inter-subjective teacher-student relationships in education and addresses the significance of negotiations and their open-endedness. This paper draws its empirical material from case studies for which interviews were the main source for gathering data. The data analyses were made using the AtlasTi software designed for qualitative analysis. In the empirical material were found instances of negotiations in which inter-subjective relationships are established and maintained; negotiations that are rendered obscured or even invisible from a qualification purpose but that influence the educational processes. The results show that teachers and students creatively use potentials within contextual conditions to attain relationships which sometimes ...

The test is non-invasive, takes 15 minutes and uses an arm cuff much like a blood pressure test. However, this test can detect signs of early onset cardiovascular disease. It measures the functional health of endothelial cells in the brachial artery of the arm which independent research has shown to be a very reliable indicator of cardiovascular health.. "We have received approval to add the CE mark to our novel medical device," says Steve Everist, CEO of Everist Health. "The CE mark opens up the market for this device to countries in the European Union and to other countries that recognize the CE mark. Use of the test will help to save lives through the early detection of cardiovascular disease, particularly in asymptomatic individuals, i.e., young people who are fit, non-smokers and have no family history of heart problems.". "At the same time, because early detection of potential heart problems has the ability to reduce health care costs, we believe this test will appeal to government and ...
Healthcare is changing at the speed of light as researchers discover new treatments and as developers create new technologies that improve the health and well-being of the public. A dizzying array of new healthcare products will hit the market in the next year. Here are five of the most important healthcare trends to watch in 2020.. 5 Must-Watch Healthcare Trends for 2020. 1. AI and Machine Learning. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning use computers that study algorithms and statistical models - and learn from them - without guidance from humans. Machine language systems can solve problems just as a clinician might - by weighing evidence. Unlike a single clinician, though, these systems can simultaneously observe and process a nearly limitless number of inputs.. Using insights from past data to make informed clinical decisions is the essence of evidence-based medicine. Researchers have traditionally used mathematical equations, such as linear regression, to identify and ...
At the MIT Enterprise Forum event on Mobile healthcare, Robert Campbell, the Vice President of Clinical Services and Research at Insulet Corporation, talked about the OmniPod Insulin Management System that they introduced in 2005. The OmniPod System consists of a handheld device called a Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) that communicates wirelessly with a wearable, very simple-looking Pod. But looks can be deceiving. Inside the Pod, which attaches to the patient using an integrated waterproof adhesive, is an insulin reservoir, an automated insertion mechanism that places the cannula under the skin (virtually pain-free according to Insulet), and a unique pumping mechanism that delivers insulin in 0.05 unit (½ microlitre) pulses. The PDM wirelessly communicates insulin delivery instructions to the Pod and walks the patient through the process step by step. The PDM is also a blood glucose meter. Behind the scenes, a doctor or nurse sets up the device, so that it can deliver the right amount of ...

Note: Media reports indicate that President Donald Trump is likely to announce an initiative to lower insulin costs during tonights State of the Union . The effort may include incentives for insurers to limit insulin cost-sharing, but the test is whether the administration will ultimately force prescription corporations to meaningfully lower prices.. Donald Trump promised to overhaul the prescription drug market, including bringing prices way, way down. He has failed to do so.. The patchwork of small ideas under consideration by the Trump administration is necessary only because the president failed to adopt obvious and effective solutions to make insulin and other medicines affordable.. Among these effective solutions is direct government price negotiations. A study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine estimated that negotiations would cut Medicare insulin costs by more than half, saving $4.4 billion in 2017 alone. Candidate Trump promised to support government negotiation powers. ...

Competitive Style. When a person uses a competitive style, they tend to be very assertive and interested in getting their own way. They also approach the conflict in a forceful manner without being interested in cooperating with other people, and view their relationship from a win/lose perspective.. People use the competitive style when an issue is very important to them, or when the person has the authority to make the decision, and it seems clear that this is the one best way. They can also become competitive when decisions have to be made fast and the person has power the to make it, as the following dialogue shows:. Moshe (irritated): You didnt turn off the lights in the bathroom when you were finished. How many times do I have to remind you? Shani (sarcastic tone): Why do you have to make such a big deal about a few cents worth of electricity? Moshe (harshly): Because youre irresponsible about money, thats why! Shani (reacting): Maybe youd save more money if I just moved out.. When ...
Donald Trumps primary approach to the resolution of conflict is to focus on what he sees as his power advantage over the party with whom he is dealing, and to rely on that presumed power advantage to force the other party to agree to his terms.

No one likes an argument but it is foolish to think that you can go through life without having disagreements is unrealistic. Therefore it is useful to develop conflict resolution skills, rather than avoid the anger. The excuse that the other person will get mad if you level with him or her is a poor one. First, you never know if he or she will get mad. Second, even if he or she does get mad, the discussion doesnt have to end. Be brave and venture into conflict resolution. Third, the person may have every right to be upset that you withheld information (or lied) that affects his or her life. Think about it. How do you feel when a secret is kept from you, especially if your decisions depend upon the hidden information ...

A comparison of wildlife usage between native, restored grasslands and pervasive, non-native grasslands: California grasslands are highly altered compared to their native counterparts. Conversion back to native perennial grasslands is considered highly desirable, with purported benefits to native wildlife. However, it is relatively unknown if native grasslands will be favored by native wildlife. We aim to determine if such grassland restoration will promote native wildlife.. Collaborators:. Dr. Kristina Wolf, University of California, Davis. Ryan Bourbour, University of California, Davis. Livestock-recreation interactions in coastal California rangelands: Half of California is publicly owned, with approximately 19,000 ha (47,000 ac) of rangelands converted to other uses each year, leaving the general public and livestock graziers with a dwindling resource base. While the primary use of rangelands for well over a century has been livestock grazing to produce food and fiber, an elevated demand for ...

All the professions mentioned above may be pursued in government agencies, with private consultants, or with research institutions such as universities. Many aquatic scientists are researchers and also educators, managers, or consultants to decisionmakers. Experts trained in both science and relevant policies are important for conserving and restoring fresh-water systems. These might be people with backgrounds in economics, law, geography, or sociology. They help scientists convey information to the public and to lawmakers. As communities become more involved in activities such as restoring populations of threatened species, maintaining vital natural resources, and conducting comprehensive land-use planning, there will be a steady need for fresh-water scientists with good communication and negotiation skills. ...
