My research focuses on understanding of the molecular signal and machinery involved in egress Plasmodium falciparum merozoites from host erythrocytes, involving multidisciplinary approach such as live cell imaging, molecular biology, cell biology and protein chemistry. P. falciparum causes the most virulent form of malaria in humans leading to tremendous morbidity and mortality. All the clinical symptoms of malaria are attributed to the blood stage of the parasite life cycle. To complete its life cycle in blood stage, P. falciparum merozoites invade erythrocytes, replicate, and then exit by a process known as egress. The egress of P. falciparum merozoites from the host erythrocytes is an essential yet poorly understood process. Live video microscopy has played a special role in studies on egress and invasion. In the vicinity of a few sandbanks along the Belgian coast, the fauna is flourishing just like it was a hundred years ago. Despite increased disruption due to fishing, the area is teeming with whelks, top shells and dead mans fingers.. The Belgian North Sea primarily has a sandy bed, but on the edges of some sandbanks there are gravel beds made up of rocks and pebbles. More than a hundred years ago Professor Gustave Gilson, a Belgian pioneer in biological marine research, ascertained that the biodiversity there was very high, differing greatly from the surrounding sandy areas. In the presence of ever visible effects of global climate change, small scale wind turbines are considered as viable renewable systems. Horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) are popular for grid-connected power generation. Yet there is an increasing demand for small-scale portable power generation, typically away from the grid and provided by diesel generator and small scale photovoltaic panels. Small scale vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) can be used as power supplies for telecommunication towers, recreational and military camps away from the population. Moreover silent and aesthetic VAWT prototypes are attractive for urban use as well. Fuel cells are clean, compact and modular energy generation devices that generate electricity by a chemical reaction between a fuel and an oxidant. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) offers several advantages for both mobile and stationary applications yet it is necessary to develop low cost and more efficient PEMFCs. The heart of the PEMFC is the membrane electrode assembly composed of a proton exchange membrane sandwiched between two porous gas diffusion electrodes. At this point, graphene is a promising candidate as catalyst support material for PEMFCs due to its outstanding mechanical, structural, and electronic properties. MATERIALS AND METHODS Plant materials and ClO2 treatments. Longan fruit cv. Daw at the harvesting stage (180 d after full bloom, 15-16% total soluble solid) were obtained from a commercial orchard in Lamphun province, Thailand and transported to the Postharvest Physiology and Technology Research Laboratory at Chiang Mai University under 25 °C within 2 h. Fruit were selected for uniformity in shape, color, size and lack of defects and divided into 6 groups of 330 fruit each. ClO2 gas was prepared according to Saengnil et al. (2014). The most effective concentration for reducing pericarp browning and maintaining fruit quality of longan was 10 mg L−1 for 10 min (Saengnil et al., 2014). A 10 min fumigation with 0 and 10 mg L-1 ClO2 was done in a chamber separately in triplicate. After fumigation, the chamber was ventilated for 30 min to remove any residual ClO2. Pyridine,one of bio-recalcitrant compounds,was treated with photocatalysis to break its molecular structure.It could not be oxidized by potassium dichromate until photocatalysis,which was proved by COD increasing with photocatalytic time increasing.Pyridine was taken as organic carbon source to reduce nitrate in denitrification,and experimental results indicated that nitrate removal percentage with photocatalysis was increased as 4.2 times as that without photocatalysis.When pyridine was treated with photocatalysis and used as organic carbon source for denitrification of 30 min,the nitrate removal percentage was equivalent to the same effect by adding 150 mg/L of glucose as carbon source,which suggested that biodegradability of pyridine was improved after photocatalysis,which could realize pyridine and nitrate removal at the same time.

The event took place in the Kansas Union and the Commons, where over 300 students from across campus presented their projects. We were impressed by the number of students who chose to share their research and creative endeavors with the campus and community at the Undergraduate Research Symposium this year, as well as the quality of the work they were presenting, said Alison Olcott, director of the Center for Undergraduate Research and associate professor of geology.. Student presenters prepared for the symposium by attending workshops with staff from the Center for Undergraduate Research and working closely with their research mentors to refine their oral presentations, poster presentations and artists talks. Overview: Botany Department. The Botany Department consists of two divisions: Vascular Plant Division and Nonvascular Plant Division. These two branches are responsible for collection and research, to provide support to exhibitions at the Museum and to promote science education. The Department is also in charge of the operation of the Botanical Garden of NMNS. One fall day, as the leaves were changing color, I was taking my turn walking the Science Centers coyote, ever watchful for wildlife that she might point out to me or for animals that detect her first and take evasive action. As she began investigating a sunny patch of grass and fallen leaves, a garter snake slowly curved its way forward about two feet and stopped, remaining alert with head up and tongue flickering. Coyote conveniently decided that nothing significant was there and moved on. In contrast, I appreciated this fleeting wildlife sight, for soon New Hampshires snakes would be disappearing from view for the winter phase of their year.. Our most common New England snake, the garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalia, has a variable pattern usually combining a narrow yellow stripe down the back with a wide stripe on each side. Jason Poole, who oversees the lab and has participated in dinosaur digs around the world, says the fossils were unearthed in Wyoming in 2011 by a team from the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton. Scientists already know the fossils belong to a 25-foot-long, duck-billed, plant-eating dinosaur that lived 67 to 70 million years ago. Its of the hadrosaur family, the same family as the famous Hadrosaurus foulkii, the worlds first nearly complete dinosaur, which the Academy displayed in 1868 as the worlds first mounted dinosaur.. The prime objective of this study is to assess the socio-economic impact of wetlands in the study area; the secondary objective is to establish the condition of the wetlands and to propose remedial measures. Primary and secondary data were used for this study. As primary data, we employed direct observation, questionnaire survey and group discussion. As secondary data, we utilized statistical data from Navithanveli DS Division, previous researches and general ecological works. In Navithenveli DS Division, inhabitants are benefitted by wetlands in many ways. In this work, Zn1-xCoFe2AlxO4 (x=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0) ferrites were synthesized using the sol-gel method. XRD analysis was done and confirmed the formation of spinel structure, where the particle size and lattice parameter decrease with increase of aluminum concentration. This may be attributed to a shift of the bigger Al3+ ions, from the tetrahedral to the octahedral sites, interchanging with smaller Zn2+ ions and that consequently result to a decreased unit cell size. The Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy (SKPM) showed that the work function average ranges between 200 and 680 mV for the different concentration of aluminum in the samples. Fractural analysis indicated a small fracture between the samples of different ratios which can be attributed to the method used to prepare as well as the shifting of the Al3+ ions. The UV-vis spectroscopy showed variation of energy gap with increasing aluminum concentration, and an increased optical absorbance as the Al3+ ions were introduced in the

Two exotic fungal isolates, one of Beauveria bassiana (268-86) and another of Metarhizium anisopliae (100-82), three local isolates of B. bassiana (isolates I, II, III) and one of the entomogenous bacteria Serratia marcescens, were tested for pathogenicity against the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus. All four isolates of B. bassiana and the one of M. anisopliae were found to be pathogenic to third-instar larvae of C. sordidus, causing mortalities of 98-100% by 9 days post-exposure to dry fungal spores. M. anisopliae was the least pathogenic to larvae with LT50 of 4.2 days, compared to 3.5, 3.3, 3.6 and 4.0 respectively for isolates I, II, III and 268-86. B. bassiana was also pathogenic to adult C. sordidus, causing mortalities varying from 63-97% by 35 days post-exposure depending on isolate. As for larvae M. anisopliae exhibited low pathogenicity for the adult C. sordidus. The notion of natural kinds has been central to contemporary discussions of metaphysics and philosophy of science. Although explicitly articulated by nineteenth-century philosophers like Mill, Whewell and Venn, it has a much older history dating back to Plato and Aristotle. In recent years, essentialism has been the dominant account of natural kinds among philosophers, but the essentialist view has encountered resistance, especially among naturalist metaphysicians and philosophers of science. Informed by detailed examination of classification in the natural and social sciences, this book argues against essentialism and for a naturalist account of natural kinds. By looking at case studies drawn from diverse scientific disciplines, from fluid mechanics to virology and polymer science to psychiatry, the author argues that natural kinds are nodes in causal networks. The apparent need for a set of rigorous definitions of the basic concepts is discussed, and it is argued that although this is necessary for the natural sciences it is not necessary for sciences which concern themselves with behavioral phenomena which have a prior description in natural language. It is further argued that information science should be more interested in uncertainty than in information, and it is shown how the Anomalous State of Knowledge (ASK) paradigm may be used to describe itself, hence also informa tion science. Helen embraced botany as an undergraduate at Wellesley College and in her early graduate work published the effects of light on growth and differentiation in timothy grass seedlings. She began her career long focus on plant enzymes at the University of Pennsylvania where she obtained her PhD. After completing post-doctoral research at the University of Chicago, Helen was the only woman faculty member in the natural sciences and was the first Reed professor to win a Guggenheim Fellowship. Dr. Stafford taught Introductory Biology and a laboratory-intensive plant physiology course from 1954-1987. During that period she was continuously funded by the NSF to study flavonoid biosynthesis in Douglas-fir, publishing more than 70 research articles while working primarily with undergraduates. He studied natural sciences and medicine in Geneva, and following graduation, returned to Paris as an assistant to psychiatrist Gaétan de Clérambault. In 1928 he became a privat-docent for neurology and psychiatry. In 1941 he became an associate professor at Geneva, where in 1960, he was appointed professor of neurology and director of the university neurological clinic. From 1962 onward, he was also in charge of the neurological polyclinic. Known for his research of visual hallucinations, he is credited with coining the terms Charles Bonnet syndrome (named after Swiss biologist Charles Bonnet) and Zingerle syndrome (named after Austrian neurologist Hermann Zingerle) for specific hallucinatory conditions. Johann Ernst Immanuel Walch (29 August 1725 - 1 December 1778) was a German theologian, linguist, and naturalist from Jena. The son of the theologian Johann Georg Walch, he studied Semitic languages at the University of Jena, and also natural science and mathematics. In 1749 he published Einleitung in die Harmonie der Evangelien, and in 1750 was appointed professor extraordinarius of theology. Five years later he became professor ordinarius of logic and metaphysics; in 1759 he exchanged this for a professorship of rhetoric and poetry. Amongst his theological works were Dissertationes in Acta Apostolorum (1756-1761); Antiquitales symbolicae (1772); and after his death appeared Observationes in Matthaeum ex Graecis inscriptionibus (1779). Sustainable management of natural resources requires an in-depth understanding of the interplay between social and ecological change. Linked social-ecological systems (SES) have been described as complex adaptive systems (CAS), which mean that they are irreducible, exhibit nonlinear dynamics, have interactions across scales and are uncertain and unpredictable. These propositions have however rarely been tested empirically, in part due to a lack of methodological approaches and suitable datasets. In this thesis, I address this methodological and empirical gap in a study of long-term change of Baltic Sea fisheries. In Paper I, we develop the concept of fishing style through integrating multivariate statistical analysis and in-depth interviews. We thereby identify an intermediate level of detail for analyzing social-ecological dynamics, embracing the case specific and context dependent approaches of the social sciences with the generalizable and quantifiable approaches from the natural sciences.
