Mutations in the BCKDHA, BCKDHB, and DBT genes can cause maple syrup urine disease. These three genes provide instructions for making proteins that work together as part of a complex. The protein complex is essential for breaking down the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, which are present in many kinds of food, particularly protein-rich foods such as milk, meat, and eggs.. Mutations in any of these three genes reduce or eliminate the function of the protein complex, preventing the normal breakdown of leucine, isoleucine, and valine. As a result, these amino acids and their byproducts build up in the body. Because high levels of these substances are toxic to the brain and other organs, their accumulation leads to the serious health problems associated with maple syrup urine disease.. Researchers are studying other genes related to the same protein complex that may also be associated with maple syrup urine disease. ...

Genetics Home Reference : 25 Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures (epilepsy) and a decline in intellectual function. The signs and symptoms of the disorder usually appear in late childhood or adolescence and worsen with time. Myoclonus is a term used to describe episodes of sudden, involuntary muscle jerking or twitching that can affect part of the body or the entire body. Myoclonus can occur when an affected person is at rest, and it is made worse by motion, excitement, or flashing light (photic stimulation). In the later stages of Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy, myoclonus often occurs continuously and affects the entire body. Several types of seizures commonly occur in people with Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy. Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (also known as grand mal seizures) affect the entire body, causing muscle rigidity, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. Affected individuals may also experience occipital ...
Genetics Home Reference : 25 Lysinuric protein intolerance is a disorder caused by the body's inability to digest and use certain protein building blocks (amino acids), namely lysine, arginine, and ornithine. Because the body cannot effectively break down these amino acids, which are found in many protein-rich foods, nausea and vomiting are typically experienced after ingesting protein. People with lysinuric protein intolerance have features associated with protein intolerance, including an enlarged liver and spleen (hepatosplenomegaly), short stature, muscle weakness, impaired immune function, and progressively brittle bones that are prone to fracture (osteoporosis). A lung disorder called pulmonary alveolar proteinosis may also develop. This disorder is characterized by protein deposits in the lungs, which interfere with lung function and can be life-threatening. An accumulation of amino acids in the kidneys can cause end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in which the kidneys become unable to filter ...

These corrections result from the NLM Quality Assurance reviews as well as from user reports to publishers, who then update citations as appropriate. These maintained citations, along with new citations, are then available to MEDLINE data distribution and PubMed users daily.. YEP (year-end processing) encompasses more extensive changes to the MEDLINE citations. This maintenance is primarily for making changes to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) on existing MEDLINE citations to conform to the forthcoming year's version of MeSH, and also involves other global changes such as those to Supplementary Concept Names.. The annual year-end processing procedures usually start in mid-November and are targeted for completion by the end of November.. During this year-end processing time, the schedule for adding citations newly indexed with MeSH to MEDLINE/PubMed is temporarily interrupted, and no newly indexed MEDLINE citations are added to PubMed. New in process citations, however, continue to be ...

When the Port Loyola Library was opened in May of 2002 it was somewhat of a milestone in library development in Belize. This is so because it was the first library branch of the Belize National Library Service and Information System to be established on the south side of Belize City. At that time, as one of our several branch libraries countrywide, we saw the Port Loyola Library fitting easily into our long-term vision to provide a well-developed public library service, making maximum use of information technology to facilitate Belize's developmental needs to evolve information and knowledge-based society.. The Port Loyola Library experienced some growth since its inception by allowing everyone, especially persons living in the immediate area, to have ready access to materials, reading and study. At the outset, the library offered after-school remedial reading and math classes to students, as well as children's activities like story reading and arts and crafts. This was all in our endeavor of ...

The ALA Archives is always pleased when our records are used in publishing new historical research, and today is the official release date for the book When Books Went to War: The Stories that Helped Us Win World War II by Molly Manning, which includes research from records held at the ALA Archives. The book tells the story of the revival of mass-organized library services for the armed forces, which had been premiered during World War I but fallen into neglect during peacetime. The Victory Book Campaign was a joint effort from librarians, booksellers, publishers, and the US armed forces to not just rekindle the library program, but to greatly expand it. Librarians focused their efforts on organizing book donation drives, as demonstrated with this poster to the right.. Ms. Manning used the papers of Althea B. Warren, ALA President 1943-44, when researching this book. The ALA Archives holds additional records related to its work in the Victory Book Campaign, including reports, correspondence, and ...

With the rising incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) over the last decade, healthcare professionals are recognizing that close collaboration and standardized protocols aid in effectively diagnosing and treating newborns with drug withdrawal symptoms. Maternal use of prescription or illicit drugs during pregnancy can result in the newborn experiencing NAS, with symptoms of excessive or high-pitched crying, irritability, poor feeding, sleep problems, slow weight gain, and seizures. Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority analysts identified 797 events involving newborns diagnosed with NAS that occurred from January 2005 through December 2014, with an increasing number of events reported each year. Healthcare professionals use a standardized scoring process, combinations of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, and close care team collaboration to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of newborns with NAS. With the help of healthcare professionals, mothers and families can provide ...

Rates of severe coal workers' pneumoconiosis - also known as black lung disease - among coal miners have been on the rise recently despite regulations on exposure to dusts associated with mining. Researchers believe the higher rates of more severe lung disease may be due to greater exposure to silica, likely as a byproduct of going after ever-narrowing coal seams that require cutting through more rock to reach. Silica dust is much more toxic to the lungs, but little is known about its contribution to black lung disease at the molecular level, and researchers don't know how silica and coal or other dusts together might interact to influence the development of disease.. A new $750,000 grant from the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mining Safety and Health will support researchers in the University of Illinois at Chicago Mining Education and Research Center working to find out how various mining dusts contribute to lung disease. The center, which is housed in the UIC School of Public ...
