Mutations in the BCKDHA, BCKDHB, and DBT genes can cause maple syrup urine disease. These three genes provide instructions for making proteins that work together as part of a complex. The protein complex is essential for breaking down the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine, which are present in many kinds of food, particularly protein-rich foods such as milk, meat, and eggs.. Mutations in any of these three genes reduce or eliminate the function of the protein complex, preventing the normal breakdown of leucine, isoleucine, and valine. As a result, these amino acids and their byproducts build up in the body. Because high levels of these substances are toxic to the brain and other organs, their accumulation leads to the serious health problems associated with maple syrup urine disease.. Researchers are studying other genes related to the same protein complex that may also be associated with maple syrup urine disease. ...

Genetics Home Reference : 25 Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by recurrent seizures (epilepsy) and a decline in intellectual function. The signs and symptoms of the disorder usually appear in late childhood or adolescence and worsen with time. Myoclonus is a term used to describe episodes of sudden, involuntary muscle jerking or twitching that can affect part of the body or the entire body. Myoclonus can occur when an affected person is at rest, and it is made worse by motion, excitement, or flashing light (photic stimulation). In the later stages of Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy, myoclonus often occurs continuously and affects the entire body. Several types of seizures commonly occur in people with Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy. Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (also known as grand mal seizures) affect the entire body, causing muscle rigidity, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. It is easy to get further in debt when you decide to acquire the assistance of a loan shark. You may not know what you are dealing with initially, but a loan shark can get vicious in many cases.. Many people will agree to the terms provided by loan sharks because they are desperate for cash. The goal of anti-retroviral therapy is to stem the replication of HIV virus to a point below which drug fighting mutation do not emerge, restore and preserve immune function, reduce AIDS-related events and improve the life span of the patient. By the end of 2016, there were 1.5 million PLWH in Kenya, with 59% on ART. Nairobi carries the highest population of sex workers, a key population in HIV transmission. The rate of viral suppression among PLWH on ART (74%) in Nairobi County stands at 41%. For a County with approximately 39,494 sex workers whose HIV prevalence is high (29.3% among female sex workers and 18.2% among male who have sex with men) relative to the County prevalence, theres need to improve the rate of viral suppression. The objective of the study was to determine factors influencing sustained viral load suppression in female sex workers initiated into care at the sex worker outreach project in Nairobi. This was a retrospective cohort study using secondary data collected from HIV ...

These corrections result from the NLM Quality Assurance reviews as well as from user reports to publishers, who then update citations as appropriate. These maintained citations, along with new citations, are then available to MEDLINE data distribution and PubMed users daily.. YEP (year-end processing) encompasses more extensive changes to the MEDLINE citations. This maintenance is primarily for making changes to the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) on existing MEDLINE citations to conform to the forthcoming years version of MeSH, and also involves other global changes such as those to Supplementary Concept Names.. The annual year-end processing procedures usually start in mid-November and are targeted for completion by the end of November.. During this year-end processing time, the schedule for adding citations newly indexed with MeSH to MEDLINE/PubMed is temporarily interrupted, and no newly indexed MEDLINE citations are added to PubMed. New in process citations, however, continue to be ...

The 1940s and 1950s saw the rise of music that continued to protest labor, race, and class issues. Protest songs continued to increase their profile over this period, and an increasing number of artists appeared who were to have an enduring influence on the protest music genre. However, the movement and its protest singers faced increasing opposition from McCarthyism. One of the most notable pro-union protest singers of the period was Woody Guthrie ("This Land Is Your Land", "Deportee", "1913 Massacre", "Dust Bowl Blues", "Tom Joad"), whose guitar bore a sticker which read: "This Machine Kills Fascists". Guthrie was also an occasional member or the hugely influential labor-movement band The Almanac Singers, founded by Millard Lampell, Lee Hays, and Pete Seeger,[15] which had a floating personnel. Politics and music were closely intertwined with the Almanacs Popular Front political beliefs. Their first release in May 1941, an album called Songs For John Doe, performed by Seeger, Hays, Lampell, ...

Design: A total of 1335 individuals working in informatics and library areas at 67 academic health sciences centers in the U.S. were surveyed. Multivariate techniques were used to evaluate the relationship between the set of six organizational factors and two measures of innovation diffusion. Measurements: A Guttman-like scale was developed to measure infusion, or depth or sophistication, of each of the three innovations at each institution. Diffusion was measured by a question previously developed for another study. Six independent variables were measured via five formerly developed scales and ...

Evidence pertaining to the carcinogenicity of chlordane and heptachlor/heptachlor epoxide is reviewed and evaluated. The report covers studies completed before 1985. Case reports and epidemiologic studies of pesticide applicators and pesticide manufacturing workers are reviewed, but because of methodologic limitations, these studies establish neither a positive nor a negative association between cancer and chlordane or heptachlor/heptachlor epoxide exposure. A number of independent studies of laboratory animals, however, demonstrates that chlordane and heptachlor/heptachlor epoxide cause liver cancer in mice and rats. Based on the accumulated evidence, chlordane and heptachlor/heptachlor epoxide are classified as probable human carcinogens, Group B2 using EPAs Guidelines for Carcinogen Risk Assessment. The carcinogenic potency of chlordane and heptachlor/heptachlor epoxide is estimated by fitting mathematical models to the laboratory animal data. These estimates indicate that chlordane and ...

The manuscript and archives collections contain everything from the daybooks of eighteenth century silversmiths to late nineteenth century tradecards for sewing machines; from architectural drawings for early nineteenth century town houses to rare autochromes of Winterthurs gardens; from photographs of Shaker communities to the exercise books of school children.. Peggy Clayton, who lived near Halifax, NC, created her calligraphy mathematics exercise book (Doc 1442) in the 1770s, ornamenting it with pictures of American ships, flags, and patriotic sentiments as well as standard exercises like addition, subtraction, multiplication, rule of three, and simple and compound interest. She used the common writing materials of the period - hand-made laid paper, a quill pen and iron gall ink. The folded leaves were sewn into a soft cover composed of a canvas laminated between a heavy outer paper and newsprint on the inside.. Training in sport environments that emphasize leanness and muscularity may damage athletes body image and negatively influence male athletes eating behaviors and attitudes. The Questionnaire for Eating Disorder Diagnosis and the Bulimia Test - Revised were completed anonymously online by 732 male intercollegiate athletes. Most male collegiate athletes were classified as asymptomatic (82.9%), followed by symptomatic (16%) and eating disordered (1.1%). The most common forms pathogenic behaviors were excessive exercise (51.6%), binge eating (21.4%), and dieting or fasting (20.5%). Results suggested that athletes who participate in weight class sports are at higher risk for developing these behaviors than endurance sport or ball game athletes. Counseling and other implications for professionals working with athletes are discussed.

The Author(s) 2017. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem that is growing in prevalence and is associated with severe complications. During the progression of the disease, a majority of CKD patients suffer oral complications. Dental implants are currently the most reliable and successful treatment for missing teeth. However, due to complications of CKD such as infections, bone lesions, bleeding risks, and altered drug metabolism, dental implant treatment for renal failure patients on dialysis is more challenging. In this review, we have summarized the characteristics of CKD and previous publications regarding dental treatments for renal failure patients. In addition, we discuss our recent research results and clinical experience in order to provide dental implant practitioners with a clinical guideline for dental implant treatment for renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis ...

During the Late Antiquity and Middle Ages periods, there was no Rome of the kind that ruled the Mediterranean for centuries and spawned the culture that produced twenty-eight public libraries in the urbs Roma.[28] The empire had been divided then later re-united again under Constantine the Great who moved the capital of the Roman Empire in 330 AD to the city of Byzantium which was renamed Constantinople.[29] The Roman intellectual culture that flourished in ancient times was undergoing a transformation as the academic world moved from laymen to Christian clergy.[30] As the West crumbled, books and libraries flourished and flowed east toward the Byzantine Empire.[31] There, four different types of libraries were established: imperial, patriarchal, monastic, and private.[32] Each had its own purpose and, as a result, their survival varied.. Christianity was a new force in Europe and many of the faithful saw Hellenistic culture as pagan. As such, many classical Greek works, written on scrolls, were ...

Guaranteed asset protection insurance (or GAP Insurance) is an insurance coverage offered as a supplement to automobile insurance policies or auto loans. A GAP policy covers the difference between the value of a car (i.e., what the insurance company will typically pay) and what the borrower owes on the loan if the car is totaled or stolen. Because most cars lose value as soon as theyre driven off the dealers lot, and most car loans cover more than the purchase price of the vehicle, the "gap" between the two can be thousands of dollars. Legally, GAP insurance is not the same as GAP waiver.[1] A GAP insurance policy is typically regarded by state regulators as an insurance product, and regulated as such. By contrast, GAP waiver is not considered insurance in most U.S. states, provided that the auto lender agrees to waive the difference between the outstanding loan amount and the value of the vehicle at the time it was totaled or stolen. GAP is helpful for those wishing to commit fraud (Ref Dan ...

BACKGROUND: Uveitis is a term used to describe a heterogeneous group of intraocular inflammatory diseases of the anterior, intermediate, and posterior uveal tract (iris, ciliary body, choroid). Uveitis is the fifth most common cause of vision loss in high-income countries, accounting for 5% to 20% of legal blindness, with the highest incidence of disease in the working-age population.Corticosteroids are the mainstay of acute treatment for all anatomical subtypes of non-infectious uveitis and can be administered orally, topically with drops or ointments, by periocular (around the eye) or intravitreal (inside the eye) injection, or by surgical implantation. OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy and safety of steroid implants in people with chronic non-infectious posterior uveitis, intermediate uveitis, and panuveitis. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL (which contains the Cochrane Eyes and Vision Trials Register) (Issue 10, 2015), Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid MEDLINE In-Process and Other Non-Indexed Citations,

All three trials separately found that the chances becoming infected with malaria were reduced by up to 85 per cent when intermittent preventive treatment in children (IPTc) was combined with the use of insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs), the main tool currently used to protect people against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa.. The three studies are published this week in the journal Public Library of Science (PLoS) Medicine. The studies provide further evidence to support IPTc being integrated into programmes designed to control malaria, particularly in areas that seriously affected by a higher rate of malaria infection during warm periods of the rainy season.. Previous clinical trials have shown that seasonal IPTc, which involves the administration of two or three doses of antimalarial drugs during the high malaria transmission season, has successfully reduced the number of people suffering malaria. Sleeping underneath ITNs has been shown to prevent malaria by 50 per cent, however these are the ...

The sampling and analysis methods described in the report were specifically designed for use in an ongoing nationwide survey of emissions of organic pollutants from stationary combustion sources. The primary focus of the survey is on polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). To date, these procedures have been used by Midwest Research Institute (MRI) to survey emissions from coal-fired utility boilers, a co-fired (coal + refuse-derived fuel) utility boiler, and a municipal refuse incinerator. The document was prepared by MRI as a guideline for laboratories who may participate in the study, and for other researchers who wish to use these methods ...

We characterized ED patients pre-visit Internet search terms using a qualitative approach and looked at the relationship between these search terms and the patients final diagnoses. We found the majority of patients searched online for symptoms rather than for specific diagnoses. Previous studies using web-analytics of Internet queries similarly noted that the majority of searches focused on symptoms.11 However, in contrast to studies in other settings, in this sample of ED patients very few searches focused on treatment. For example, in a sample of orthopedic patients 21% sought information about treatment, and in a sample of melanoma patients 96% sought information about treatment.12,13 The higher ratio of treatment-related searches in the outpatient clinic and specialty context contrasts with our ED data. However, our report is unique in illuminating the frequency and nature of Internet search strategies that may serve as the genesis of the decision to seek unscheduled ED care. ...
