Purpose of review: Adolescents with mental health problems often require transition of care from child and adolescent to adult mental health services. This review is a synthesis of current research and policy literature on transition to describe the barriers at the interface between child and adolescent mental health services and adult mental health services and outcomes of poor transition.. Recent findings: Adolescence is a risk period for emergence of serious mental disorders. Child and adolescent mental health services and adult mental health services use rigid age cut-offs to delineate service boundaries, creating discontinuities in provision of care. Adolescent mental health services are patchy across the world. Several recent studies have confirmed that problems occur during transition in diverse settings across several countries. In physical health, there are emerging models of practice to improve the process and outcomes of transition, but there is very little comparable literature in ...
The transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, is a major public health concern, especially among minority groups in the United States. Although STDs are prevalent across all racial and ethnic groups in the United States, the rate of STD infection is disproportionately higher for African Americans than for white Americans. African Americans have higher rates of HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and herpes than white Americans. An important part of the prevention process is early education on HIV to reduce sexual-risk behavior and to promote safe sexual practices. Interventions are needed in a variety of settings to extensively address African Americans' risk of STDs, including HIV. Although most HIV/STD risk-reduction interventions are conducted at the individual level, a couple-based approach may be more effective and consistent with cultural values. This study will compare the effectiveness of the Eban HIV/STD Risk Reduction Intervention with the Eban Health ...
The National Comorbidity Survey Replication Adolescent Supplement (NCS-A) was designed to estimate the lifetime-to-date and current prevalence, age-of-onset distributions, course, and comorbidity of DSM-IV disorders in the child and adolescent years of life among adolescents in the United States; to identify risk and protective factors for the onset and persistence of these disorders; to describe patterns and correlates of service use for these disorders; and to lay the groundwork for subsequent follow-up studies that can be used to identify early expressions of adult mental disorders. The core NCS-A interview schedule was an adaptation of the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). NCS-A also administered the non-verbal subtest (Matrices subtest) of the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT). In addition to interviewing adolescents, information was collected from a parent or a parent surrogate to obtain an additional perspective on the adolescent's mental ...
In recent decades the community mental health movement has achieved a dramatic reduction in the census of state and county mental hospitals in the United States, and hundreds of federally-funded community mental health centers have been established nationwide. At the same time, national controversy has arisen in response to what in places has seemed the haphazard process of implementing "deinstitutionalization" and the fate of many chronically mentally ill persons who are without needed social services and psychological care. Despite the widespread attention that this contemporary program has received, theoretical analysis of the complex social, scientific, intellectual, and political origins of America's community mental health policy remains deficient. This article examines the background and development of the Community Mental Health Centers Act of 1963, tracing how an important shift in national policy toward the mentally ill grew out of changing perceptions-among policymakers, professional ...
Aim: This paper considers the priorities for policy to promote youth mental health in Australia. The Ottawa Charter is applied as a conceptual framework to determine current strengths and future priorities across the entire spectrum of interventions for mental health promotion.. Methods: The five platforms of the Ottawa Charter are used to categorize some of the major initiatives that promote youth mental health. Areas of strength and major gaps within each platform are identified.. Results: Australia was shown to be at the forefront of many youth mental health promotion initiatives, particularly in the service reorientation and personal skills platforms of the Ottawa Charter.. Conclusions: While significant progress has been made in some areas of youth mental health promotion, areas of critical need for policy focus were: oversight of all public policies for their impact on youth mental health; more supportive environments for youth and better interconnection with mental health care; community ...
Our second and third hypotheses related to predictors for 12-month mental health service utilisation in patients with depressive symptoms. We hypothesised that a positive intention to seek help from a healthcare professional and severity of depression could predict subsequent 12-month mental health service use. From our findings, however, a positive intention to seek help from a mental health professional and a higher severity of depression had no effect on subsequent mental health service use. Using Ajzen's theory of planned behaviour,6 an individual's behaviour may be influenced by their own personal beliefs (patient's own attitudes), subjective norms (the social norms) and control beliefs (perceived practical barriers).6 ,21 In our study population, it appears that the patient's intentions regarding help-seeking was an insignificant contributor to subsequent mental health service utilisation. Conversely, identification of depression by a doctor was a very strong predictor for subsequent ...

It has been suggested that certain types of work may increase the risk of common mental disorders, but the exact nature of the relationship has been contentious. The aim of this paper is to conduct the first comprehensive systematic meta-review of the evidence linking work to the development of common mental health problems, specifically depression, anxiety and/or work-related stress and to consider how the risk factors identified may relate to each other. MEDLINE, PsychInfo, Embase, the Cochrane Collaboration and grey literature databases were systematically searched for review articles that examined work-based risk factors for common mental health problems. All included reviews were subjected to a quality appraisal. 37 review studies were identified, of which 7 were at least moderate quality. 3 broad categories of work-related factors were identified to explain how work may contribute to the development of depression and/or anxiety: imbalanced job design, occupational uncertainty and lack of ...

One in five Australians between 16 and 85 will experience a mental illness every year. In fact, about 45% of Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in their lifetime. While physical first aid is widely acknowledged, mental health first aid is often lacking in organisations. Most people are unprepared to talk about mental health in the workplace and do not understand the support that is available. Yet, having the right conversation at the right time is often all it takes to make a major difference.. We facilitate accredited Mental Health First Aid Refresher Certification with a course adapted specifically for the workplace. The Mental Health First Aid course is evidence-based and has an internationally recognised curriculum. It continues the mental health journey for participants who have previously completed the two-day course, providing updated information, new strategies for supporting emerging mental health challenges and mental health crisis all with a focus on the role ...
Identifying a person is having a co-occurring disorder is very difficult. The symptoms for their substance abuse can be a mask for them and they are really confused in diagnosing the co-occurring disorder. Even if a person is having mental health disorder, he or she won't address their substance abuse disorder, so this on many conditions provides much confusion in identifying a person is having either a co-occurring disorder or not. But even though there were some physical patterns emerge with this co-occurring disorder.. Many people who have mental health disorder often use substances to feel better, for those who were anxious they want something to make them feel calmer and those people who often feel very depressed want something for them to be animated, those who have the feel of fear need something that makes them not more agitated, so directly or indirectly they fall as a prey to some substance addiction or the use of illegal drugs, this even worsen the symptoms of mental illness when they ...
Services for mental disorders offer treatments, support or advocacy to people judged to have mental disorders (mental illnesses). Family practice (general practice) centers in communities are commonly the first line for assessment of mental health conditions, and may prescribe psychiatric drugs and sometimes provide basic counseling or therapy for "common mental disorders". Secondary medical services may include psychiatric hospitals, although since deinstitutionalization these have been restricted in favor of wards within general hospitals, and community mental health services based more locally. Such services may be provided on an inpatient or, more commonly, outpatient basis. They may offer a range of treatments, usually centered around psychiatric drugs, and be provided by a range of mental health professionals, notably psychiatrists and psychiatric and mental health nurses. Non-medical professionals may also be involved, such as clinical psychologists, social workers and various kinds of ...

As we've covered in the past - mental health insurance coverage is extremely poor in the US; with many people left uncovered at all or very low maximums (in terms of dollar amounts spent on mental health) that results in family bankruptcies and great financial insecurity.. With this in mind, the news that the US Senate has passed a new bill mandating mental health parity provides some hope that things will get better for the mentally ill, and the families of the mentally ill in the future.. The Washington Post notes: The bill, which passed by unanimous consent, moves advocates one step closer in their years-long quest for a concept known as mental health parity.. "The passage tonight of the Mental Health Parity bill underscores our commitment to treat all patients facing all diseases with the dignity and respect they deserve," said Sen. Edward Kennedy, Democrat-Massachusetts. "This new legislation will bring dramatic new help to millions of Americans who today are denied needed mental health ...

I have worked with individuals in psychiatric hospitals and outpatient community mental health settings who suffered from schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders and whose symptoms included religiously-themed delusions. It would be difficult to mistake most of them for run-of-the-mill religious believers even though the line between religious delusion and the sort of beliefs held by some religious extremists can be fuzzy at times. Not only were their beliefs far outside what would be accepted by any religious tradition, but their religious beliefs were only one part of much larger syndromes. In most cases, one symptom does not make a mental disorder. Some specific religious beliefs can be held with delusional intensity by persons with psychotic disorders. But this is very different from asserting that anyone who holds any religious beliefs at all is mentally ill ...
