BACKGROUND: Although work-exacerbated asthma (WEA) is a prevalent condition likely to have an important societal burden, there are limited data on this condition. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were (1) to compare the clinical, functional, and inflammatory characteristics of workers with WEA and occupational asthma (OA) and (2) compare health care use and related costs between workers with WE
Invasive species pose a serious threat to native ecosystems. In eastern Washington brook stickleback (Culaea inconstans) is an important invasive species, especially at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, where they compete with waterfowl for food resources and are associated with declines in habitat quality. Understanding the invasion routes of this invasive species may help managers implement strategies to prevent further spread and mitigate damages caused by these fish. The objectives of this study were to identify the most likely point of brook stickleback invasion, to determine their most likely invasion routes, and to investigate landscape features and processes that may be impacting gene flow between populations. Genotypes at nine microsatellite loci from 560 brook stickleback from 20 putative populations were used determine the genetic variation within and among populations. Genetic diversity was highest in the headwaters of Pine Creek (HE = 0.753 in Kelley Creek, AR = 4.466 in Pine Creek) and on
Supplementary MaterialsSupplementary Information Supplementary Figures. mediator production. In mouse models of asthma, TNFRSF14 blockade with a neutralizing antibody administered after antigen sensitization, or genetic deletion of was one of the genes exhibiting higher expression during picorna virus-induced asthma exacerbations compared with values in specimens obtained 7C14 days after the contamination22. Like other receptors in the TNF superfamily, TNFRSF14 can have pleiotropic functions, including fostering or inhibiting immune responses23, for example, TNFRSF14:TNFSF14 interactions support the generation and longevity of TH2 cells and promote TH2 memory through Akt activation24. Because TH2 cells can enhance the production of Ag-specific IgE antibodies in response to sensitization with Ag, such effects of TNFSF14 on TH2 cells could contribute to the development of IgE-dependent features of asthma models. However, pharmacological blockade of TNFSF14 with an TNFRSF3-Fc fusion protein ...
Boosted by the introduction of multislice machines, CT has been steadily overtaking other imaging modalities in visualizing the chest. CT is far more specific than chest radiography and faster and more global than nuclear medicine scanning. Although MR imaging is more sensitive to differences in fat and soft-tissue contrast and provides more precise demarcations of tissue planes, it doesnt return much signal from pulmonary parenchyma.

Neisseria meningitidis is a human-specific pathogen with capacity to cause septic shock and meningitis. It has been hypothesized that invasion of the central nervous system (CNS) is a complication of a bacteremic condition. In this study, we aimed to characterize the invasion route of N. meningitidis to the CNS. Using an intranasally challenged mouse disease model, we found that twenty percent of the mice developed lethal meningitis even though no bacteria could be detected in blood. Upon bacterial infection, epithelial lesions and redistribution of intracellular junction protein N-cadherin were observed at the nasal epithelial mucosa, especially at the olfactory epithelium, which is functionally and anatomically connected to the CNS. Bacteria were detected in the submucosa of the olfactory epithelium, along olfactory nerves in the cribriform plate, at the olfactory bulb and subsequently at the meninges and subarachnoid space. Furthermore, our data suggest that a threshold level of bacteremia is ...
Deciphering invasion routes from molecular data is crucial to understanding biological invasions, including identifying bottlenecks in population size and admixture among distinct populations. Here, we unravel the invasion routes of the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii using a multi-locus microsatellite dataset (25 loci on 23 worldwide sampling locations). To do this, we use approximate Bayesian computation (ABC), which has improved the reconstruction of invasion routes, but can be computationally expensive. We use our study to illustrate the use of a new, more efficient, ABC method, ABC random forest (ABC-RF) and compare it to a standard ABC method (ABC-LDA). We find that Japan emerges as the most probable source of the earliest recorded invasion into Hawaii. Southeast China and Hawaii together are the most probable sources of populations in western North America, which then in turn served as sources for those in eastern North America. European populations are genetically more homogeneous than North
Testing results show that their device can detect airborne molecules of a chemical called 2,4-dinitrotoluene, the primary vapor emanating from TNT-based explosives. The human nose cannot detect such minute amounts of a substance, but sniffer dogs have long been used to track these types of molecules. Their technology is inspired by the biological design and microscale size of the canine olfactory mucus layer, which absorbs and then concentrates airborne molecules ...
X-ray phase-contrast imaging is a novel technology that achieves high soft-tissue contrast. Although its clinical impact is still under investigation, the technique may potentially improve clinical diagnostics. In conventional attenuation-based X-ray computed tomography, radiological diagnostics are quantified by Hounsfield units. Corresponding Hounsfield units for phase-contrast imaging have been recently introduced, enabling a setup-independent comparison and standardized interpretation of imaging results. Thus far, the experimental values of few tissue types have been reported; these values have been determined from fixated tissue samples. This study presents phase-contrast Hounsfield units for various types of non-fixated human soft tissues. A large variety of tissue specimens ranging from adipose, muscle and connective tissues to liver, kidney and pancreas tissues were imaged by a grating interferometer with a rotating-anode X-ray tube and a photon-counting detector. In addition, we ...
CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): Cellular phenotypes are determined by the differential activity of networks linking coregulated genes. Available methods for the reverse engineering of such networks from genome-wide expression profiles have been successful only in the analysis of lower eukaryotes with simple genomes. Using a new method called ARACNe (algorithm for the reconstruction of accurate cellular networks), we report the reconstruction of regulatory networks from expression profiles of human B cells. The results are suggestive a hierarchical, scale-free network, where a few highly interconnected genes (hubs) account for most of the interactions. Validation of the network against available data led to the identification of MYC as a major hub, which controls a network comprising known target genes as well as new ones, which were biochemically validated. The newly identified MYC targets include some major hubs. This approach can be generally useful for

Asthma is a potentially serious disease that is growing in prevalence in most developed countries.1 One of the factors that might have prompted this trend is the greater number of cases of asthma that develop in adults.2 In addition to a possible allergic origin, as occurs in childhood asthma, epidemiological studies indicate that occupational exposure may be the cause of up to 25% of all cases of adult-onset asthma.3 Asthma caused by exposure to a specific substance in the workplace is known as occupational asthma (OA), while pre-existing or concomitant asthma which is intensified by stimuli present in the workplace is known as work-exacerbated asthma (WEA). OA can be further subclassified as immunological and non-immunological, depending on the mechanisms causing the disease.2 Immunological OA requires time for sensitization to the causative agent to develop, while non-immunological OA refers to patients whose asthma is caused by irritants, the most obvious example of which is reactive airway ...

As part of a tumour growth inhibition study, SK-N-SH xenografts were generated in BALB/c nu/nu mice. Mice (n = 8) were placed in a printed MR- and CT-compatible plastic cradle, imaged using a 4.7-T MRI scanner and then transferred to a small animal radiation research platform (SARRP) irradiator with on-board CBCT. MRI/CBCT co-registration was performed to enable RT planning using the soft-tissue contrast afforded by MRI prior to delivery of RT (5 Gy). Tumour response was assessed by serial MRI and calliper measurements.. ...
Conclusions While the meta-analysis provides evidence to support the use of antibiotics for acute rhinosinusitis in children, it is the assessment of this review that such efficacy has not been adequately demonstrated. There remains a clear methodological challenge in the examination of this important clinical question; this challenge relates to difficulties in the application of appropriate diagnostic and inclusion criteria which are also consistent between studies.. ...

Online sex has become a fast-growing business in both developing and developed network, with advertisements of (not necessarily unique) individuals numbering in the hundreds of millions across different Web portals. One such major hub of sex advertisement activity, before it was shut down by US federal agencies, was backpage.com. The backpage.com website was a classifieds-advertising portal that had become the largest marketplace for buying and selling sex by the time that federal law enforcement agencies seized it in April 2018. Since then, investigations have been actively underway. However, the data (which has recently been made available to us for research on UK Backpage) also offers valuable insights into the nature of the online sex business, including complex properties that can be best studied using network science. One of the challenges, however, is a rigorous modeling of the data as a network, since the primary data are web advertisements and metadata (backend database) on accounts that posted

Mechanisms underlying the development of virus-induced asthma exacerbations remain unclear. To investigate if epigenetic mechanisms could be involved in virus-induced asthma exacerbations, we undertook DNA methylation profiling in asthmatic and healthy nasal epithelial cells (NECs) during Human Rhinovirus (HRV) infection in vitro. Global and loci-specific methylation profiles were determined via Alu element and Infinium Human Methylation 450 K microarray, respectively. Principal components analysis identified the genomic loci influenced the most by disease-status and infection. Real-time PCR and pyrosequencing were used to confirm gene expression and DNA methylation, respectively. HRV infection significantly increased global DNA methylation in cells from asthmatic subjects only (43.6% to 44.1%, p = 0.04). Microarray analysis revealed 389 differentially methylated loci either based on disease status, or caused by virus infection. There were disease-associated DNA methylation patterns that were not
to the editor: Having just put together a lecture on acute rhinosinusitis, I eagerly opened the January 1, 2001 issue of American Family Physician to read Adult Rhinosinusitis: Diagnosis and Management.1 I was hoping to find validation of the conclusions I had drawn from my own weeks of study and synthesis on the subject. I also hoped to find new insights from an experienced author on the difficult issue of how we should approach patients with signs and symptoms that may be either viral or bacterial.. However, I was disappointed to find a review that relied heavily on the ear, nose, and throat and allergy literature and nearly ignored the research that has fueled multiple meta-analyses and new general practice studies of acute rhinosinusitis during the past few years.. To be specific, Dr. Osguthorpes discussion of the acute variety of rhinosinusitis fails to recognize studies that have reported which signs and symptoms have statistically significant correlations with bacterial infection and ...

Stomata, surrounded by pairs of guard cells, regulate gas exchange between plants and the environment, thus being critical for plant growth. On the other hand, a variety of bacteria, oomycetes, and fungi exploit stomatal openings as major invasion routes (1, 2). To prevent microbe invasion, plants can recognize the so-called microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) that are highly conserved in the whole class of microbes, such as flagellin for bacteria and chitin oligosaccharides (CTOSs) for fungi, leading to stomatal immunity or stomatal defense, including stomatal closure and inhibition of stomatal opening (3⇓-5). Recent studies have focused on bacterium-guard cell interaction and found that pathogenic bacteria secrete phytotoxins and proteins, termed as effectors, to suppress bacterial MAMP-induced stomatal immunity (3⇓-5). Although many pathogenic fungi penetrate through stomata, posing major threats to crop production and consequently human nutrition, the fungus-guard cell ...
Weve been writing a lot about bugs lately. There was that front page story recently about may flies here in the Peoria area and Ive written recent stories on Japanese beetles, bugs that came in out of the rain along with updates on various farm pests. You cant take insects lightly. Dr. Walter Crinnion noted in the Huffington Post earlier this year that 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides are sprayed annually in the United States at a cost of $11 billion.Weve heard about disappearing bees, disease-bearing mosquitoes while following the invasion route of pests like the emerald ash borer thats already destroyed 25 million ash trees across the Midwest and is now closing in on central Illinois (the bug is moving this way from the north and has already been detected in McLean County). We worry about termites in our homes, fleas on our dogs and grubs in our yard. And farmers--they have an enemies list a mile long topped by villains such as the western corn borer, soybean aphid and wireworms. And thats just

Significant relation was observed between airway positive microbial colonization ...
The population of Afghanistan is around 33 million as of 2016,[1] which includes the roughly 3 million Afghan citizens living as refugees in both Pakistan and Iran.[5] The nation is composed of a multi-ethnic and multilingual society, reflecting its location astride historic trade and invasion routes between Central Asia, Southern Asia, and Western Asia. Its largest ethnic group is the Pashtun, followed by Tajik, Hazara, Uzbek, Aimak, Turkmen, Baloch and a few others.[1][6] Approximately 46% of the population is under 15 years of age, and 74% of all Afghans live in rural areas.[3] The average woman gives birth to five children during her entire life and 6.8% of all babies die in child-birth or infancy.[3] Life expectancy was reported in 2015 at 60.5 years[2] and only 0.04% of the population has HIV.[1] Pashto and Dari are both the official languages of the country.[4] Dari, which is known as the Afghan Persian, functions as the lingua franca. Pashto is widely used in the region south of the ...
Many people confuse the arrival of green mucus in nasal secretions with sinusitis. However, sinusitis strictly applies to the respiratory sinuses which, while communicating with the nasal passages (via openings called ostia), are anatomically different from them.. In acute rhinosinusitis, the lining of the nasal passages and the sinuses are all infected with the virus and produce excessive mucus. But unless the communications between the sinuses and the nasal passages become blocked, sinusitis has not occurred.. True sinusitis results from a blockage of the ostia, which traps harmful bacteria in the sinus(es). Its an uncommon complication of acute rhinosinusitis and occurs many days into a cold. As well as a prolonged cold, symptoms include fever, pain and tenderness over the sinuses.. Because acute rhinosinusitis is strictly viral, antibiotics have no benefit, even when the mucus is green.. However, true acute sinusitis does warrant antibiotic treatment. Such treatment should be considered ...
Plasma exudation is one cardinal factor in airways defence and inflammation. In inflammatory airway diseases such as rhinitis and asthma, however, plasma leakage may also have a pathogenetic role. Experimental data from animals indicate that highly sensitive, active, and reversible processes regulate the vascular and mucosal permeability to macromolecules. With the use of a nasal lavage model for the recovery of liquids on the mucosal surface the effect of histamine on the macromolecular permeability of the airway endothelial-epithelial barriers was studied in normal subjects. The concentrations of albumin, kinins, and N-alpha-beta-tosyl-L-arginine-methyl esterase (TAME) in nasal lavage fluid were measured and nasal symptoms assessed by a scoring technique. The reproducibility of three repeated challenges with 30 minute intervals on the same day was studied in 12 subjects and compared with the same procedure (three challenges) on a different day. Sneezing decreased significantly (p less than ...

About Chaco Canyon:. Chaco Culture National Historical Park preserves one of Americas most significant and intriguing cultural and historic areas. Chaco Canyon was a major center of Anasazi (now often called Ancestral Puebloan) culture between AD 850 and 1250. It was the major hub for trade in the Southwest. The Chacoan people traded with people all over the North, Central, and even South America. It was also the major center for ceremonies and administration of society for the prehistoric Four Corners area.. Chaco is significant for its monumental public and ceremonial buildings and distinctive architecture. The construction these buildings, along with related ramps, stairs, roads, dams, and mounds, required a lot of organization and skillful planning. The Chacoan people combined pre-planned architectural designs, astronomical alignments, geometry, landscaping, and engineering to create an ancient urban center with magnificent public architecture. ...
