Narcissus pseudonarcissus lectin (NPL) is isolated from daffodils. It exists as a dimeric protein (molecular weight 26 kDa) composed of two subunits of 13 kDa each. NPL dissociates into its monomers below pH 5.0 and above pH 9.0. NPL is mitogenic for human lymphocytes. Specificity for blood group: non-reactive with human erythrocytes. Narcissus pseudonarcissus lectin is supplied as a white lyophilized powder in 10 mM CHsub3COONHsub4. For laboratory use only.
- Grand Primo is considered one of the oldest and best selections of narcissus. It flowers early to mid-season and is adapted to mild winters like those in zones 8 and 9. It has a most pleasing fragrance.
A good horticulture therapy exercise is the forcing of narcissus bulbs...as they awaken more than one sense! Narcissus are great because they do not require advance chilling to get the bulbs to bloom indoors. This is an activity that uses gross motor movements, has a low cost, low maintenance, and quick results. I picked up 2 boxes of paperwhite narcissus that were on the clearance table at Lowes(pictured below) and proceeded to awake the magic that is locked up inside by following the instructions written on the outside of the box ...

There were twenty two Plant Heritage members in all at the event hosted at Hullwood Barn on Sunday 2nd of April. Darren Andrews gave an introduction to the International Horticultural Classification system for Daffodils, explaining which species had been used for breeding in each group, and how a knowledge of this is very relevant to the cultivation of Narcissus within each division. Neil Bradfield talked about aesthetic considerations when planting and growing Narcissus, which made everyone think about the plant associations in … Continue reading →. ...

In the experiment, the growth indexes of Narcissus tazetta var.Chinensis Beem cultured in Hoagland solution were tested with dark pretreatment for 7 d.The results showed that the roots were stronger, tender and whiter, the leaves were more fresh-green and thicker. The ratio of rood length and rod dia and of leaf length and leaf breadth minished distinctly(P0.01).In the numbers of pedicels on each plant and flowerlets on each spike, there was difference distinctly in treatment between control 1(P0.01),but not difference distinctly in treatment between control 2(P0.05).All indexes of treatment and control 2 were compared with control 1.Florescence was prolonged about 4 d and the value of view and admire was enhanced also.
Background and Aims. Although there is evidence that both allopolyploid and homoploid hybridization lead to rapid genomic changes, much less is known about hybrids from parents with different basic numbers without further chromosome doubling. Two natural hybrids, Narcissus × alentejanus (2n = 19) and N. × perezlarae (2n = 29), originated by one progenitor (N. cavanillesii, 2n = 28) and two others (N. serotinus, 2n = 10 and N. miniatus, 2n = 30, respectively) allow us to study how DNA content and composition varies in such hybrids.. Methods. Flow cytometry measurements with two staining techniques, PI and DAPI, were used to estimate 2C values and base composition (AT/GC ratio) in 390 samples from 54 wild populations of the two natural hybrids and their parental species. In addition, 20 synthetic F1 hybrid individuals were also studied for comparison.. Key Results. Natural hybrids presented 2C values intermediate between those found in their parental species, although intra-population variance ...

My publisher, Dynasty Press, engaged Ailsa Macalister of Colbert Macalister, whose specialty is book promotion and she prepared a media blitz in conjunction with the publisher and me. I have worked with her previously. She did the PR on my first Diana biography, Diana in Private, in 1992, and on the book which followed that, Royal Marriages, in 1993, both of which flew off the shelves. Her concept was to get features in the top glossy, which we did with Tatler, as well as the top English and Scottish publications, which we did with the Times and Scotland on Sunday, with the Sunday Times, the Observer and the Mail to follow. This has been quite an achievement, for some of those publications will not usually touch a product their competitors have covered, yet each of them has done so in this instance. I suspect the subject is so topical that they have suspended their competitiveness in the interest of reporting on it. Daughter of Narcissus has also been sent to reviewers in the UK, and in the US ...

Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Good soil drainage is essential. Best in organically rich loams. Soils should be kept uniformly moist during the growing season. Plant bulbs in early to mid fall. Planting depth depends upon bulb size. In St. Louis, each bulb should be planted 2 to 3 times as deep as the bulb, with at least 3 of soil over the top. Space bulbs from 4-10 apart (larger bulbs are planted further apart than smaller ones). Larger spacing may look sparse in early years, but the spaces will fill in over time and division will be needed less. In general, most bulbs will be planted 3-6 deep and 4-8 apart. After the flowers have bloomed in spring, the top portion of each flower stem may be removed, as practicable, to prevent seed formation, but foliage should not be cut back until it begins to yellow. Flowers usually face the sun, so bulbs should be grown with any shade areas at the rear of the planting. Bulbs can be left ...

Paper white narcissus are popular bulbs for forcing indoors. The fragrant, white flowers are hopeful signs of spring. However, the tall flower stalks and leaves flop over easily, and even though they can be propped up with sticks and plant ties, their excessive height can be a nuisance. Now researchers at Cornell University have found a way to keep paper whites within bounds. They forced the bulbs in pots filled with gravel and a 4- to 6-percent alcohol solution, made by mixing 7 parts water with 1 part 80-proof alcohol, such as gin, vodka, tequila, or rum (not beer or wine). It doesn?t matter which type of liquor you use, as long as the concentration of alcohol is the same. Continue adding this solution as needed while the bulbs grow. The result is a perfectly normal narcissus plant and flower that grows only 1/3 to1/2 the normal height. The flowers are just as large and long lasting. It?s important to use the exact amount of alcohol because in a 10 percent solution, the plants grow and flower ...

The other is a vintage jasmine base that probably originated in one of the reputable European fragrance houses. It came my way as it was used to be sold at an antique jewellery shop, where the naïve owners believed these were vintage extractions or essential oils of labour-intensive flowers that were no longer in production. They had some exceptionally good bases there (even if labeled as essential oils) that they smelled quite believable for the most part, including narcissus, violet flowers, carnation, sweet pea, heliotrope and more. Of course I learned after a while what these are - and stopped using them in my perfumes altogether (I only used a handful of them anyway - ones I could not find anywhere else but thought they were possible to produce naturally, like the narcissus, orange blossom absolute, violet and carnation). Smelling them now is quite fascinating, because I have smelled many more essences every since and I can actually detect particular molecules within them (i.e.: ...

Although Galanthus nivalis L. (snowdrop) is known for the galanthamine content, used in the treatment of Alzheimer disease, the polyphenolic compounds of Amaryllidaceae species are less studied. Proper understanding of the polyphenolics in these extracts and of their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties may allow a reconsideration of their medicinal uses. The polyphenolic content of four selected Amaryllidaceae species harvested from Romania (Galanthus nivalis L., Narcissus pseudonarcissus L., N. poeticus L. and Leucojum vernum L.) was determined by spectrophotometric methods; the identification of phenolic compounds was performed by a HPLC-MS method, in order to establish their polyphenolic fingerprints. For the evaluation of the antioxidant potential the following methods were employed: DPPH radical scavenging, FRAP, hemoglobin ascorbate peroxidase activity inhibition (HAPX), inhibition of lipid peroxidation catalyzed by cytochrome c, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy assays.

Alkaloids pancratistatin and narciclasine, isolated from Amaryllidaceae, have been shown to present antitumor activity on preclinical models, including melanoma. Despite extensive investigations, pancratistatin or narciclasine analogues did not succeed to provide sufficient therapeutic benefit, [1] mostly hampered by poor water solubility and systemic toxicity [1]. To overcome those limitations, we developed a chemistry program aimed at improving both their physicochemical and pharmacological properties. A literature survey suggests that any structural modification of this highly oxigenated isocarbostiryl specific scaffold would lead to a loss of activity except on position 1, difficult to achieve but interesting to explore.. A series of 40 novel 1-aminopancratistatin derivatives was synthesised starting from large quantities of narciclasine extracted from Narcissus bulbs. These novel compounds exhibit an improved pharmaceutical profile facing standard solubility, plasmatic and microsomal ...

For an easy approach, plant daffodil bulbs between hosta plants. Paperwhite or miniature daffodils (also known as narcissus minimus) work best as they bloom earlier, and the foliage is more diminutive. The bulbs emerge and provide color to the hungry eye. As they die back, the tiny shoots of the hosta begin to unfurl and poke through the soil. Once growth begins, its only a short time before the hosta emerges in its circular glory, the gently drooping leaves covering the remaining spent daffodils. Out of sight, then off the chore list ...

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. Centuries-old lore holds fast to the idea that a mirror is not only a projection of ones appearance, but ones soul. Breaking a mirror also breaks the soul into pieces. The soul, now severely damaged, isnt able to fully protect its owner from bad luck.. Long before mirrors existed, reflective surfaces were considered magical and were credited with the ability to look into the future. In ancient mythology we can often find the gods and goddesses, as well as mere mortals, looking into still water to catch a glimpse of their fate. Reflective surfaces like shiny metals and mirrors were also used to receive messages from the gods. The power of reflective surfaces to captivate and deceive are also featured strongly in such stories as Narcissus and Snow White.. It was the Romans who tagged the broken mirror as a sign of seven years bad luck. The length of the prescribed misfortune came from the ancient Roman belief that it took seven years for life to renew itself. ...
Scillitoxin or Scillaine is a chemical substance found in daffodils. It is a cardiac glucoside (a type of glycoside). with effects similar to digitoxin. The label of narcissist comes from a Greek myth about the hunter named Narcissus who was so proud of his own physical attractiveness that he showed great disdain for anyone who loved him.
The work launched the career of a hitherto unknown artist. Diderot wrote in a letter to his friend the sculptor Étienne-Maurice Falconet, in May 1768, Well, that Allegrain, whom Id never heard of, has just done a bathing Venus that has the admiration of even the masters of art. In 1755, before awarding this royal commission to Allegrain, the Marquis of Marigny, Director of the Kings Buildings, had sought the advice of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, engraver, keeper of the kings cabinet of drawings, and historiographer of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, who exerted great influence in artistic politics. The latter had to admit that the only known work by the artist was Narcissus, his admission piece for the Académie. Allegrain was nevertheless given the commission, no doubt owing to the influence of his brother-in-law, Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, the most famous sculptor under Louis XV. But he was delivered a faulty block of marble, full of veins and bluish marks. The plaster, shown ...

It was the same Nimrod who had confronted Ibrahim regarding the Almighty. He retained his youth for a period of four hundred years.. Reliable narrators maintain that Imam Zayn al-abidin said, When Ibrahim was thrown in the fire Archangel Gabriel brought a garment of Paradise and clothed him. As a result the fire receded from him and Narcissus grew around him. Yusuf was in possession of the same garment. When he took it out in Egypt and Yaqub smelt it, he said it smelt of Yusuf.3. Imam Jafar as-Sadiq is reported from authentic chains of narrators that it was the day of Navroz when Ibrahim broke the idols. In the tafsir of Imam Al-Hasan al-Askari the Holy Prophet is quoted to have said that the Almighty relieved Nuh from difficulties and extreme sorrow by the right of Muhammad and the Progeny of Muhammad. By the grace of the same personalities, the Almighty made the fire cool and comforting for Ibrahim. He provided a chair and couch for him, which was so resplendent that the devilish king ...

Following approval of a six-month moratorium on large developments in the islands commercial areas, the Folly Road Overlay Zone came to Planning Commission as a unified effort between the city, Charleston County, and the town of James Island to draft similar ordinances to address development in the area. Along with approving the requirements, the Planning Commission also rezoned dozens of properties along Folly Road into the new overlay zone. The ZytoLight ® SPEC NTRK1 Dual Color Break Apart Probe is designed to detect translocations involving the chromosomal region 1q23.1 harboring the NTRK1 (neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor type 1, a.k.a. TRKA or TRK) gene by Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH). NTRK1 encodes a tyrosine kinase (TK) receptor for the nerve growth factor (NGF). The NTRK1 gene was found to be rearranged in about 12% of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) cases. PTC accounts for about 80% of all thyroid cancers. NTRK1 rearrangements result in the fusion of the 3 end of the NTRK1 gene with the 5 end of different activating genes (TPM3, TPR, or TFG). NTRK1 rearrangements were shown to be involved in thyroid carcinogenesis. Several studies showed that NTRK1 rearrangements may be associated with a worse clinical course when compared with NRTK1 rearrangement-negative PTCs. Recently, NTRK1 rearrangements were also found in lung adenocarcinomas. Various inhibitors targeting the NTRK1-derived fusion proteins were shown
The ZytoLight ® SPEC TFE3 Dual Color Break Apart Probe is designed to detect translocations involving the chromosomal region Xp11.23 harboring the TFE3 (transcription factor binding to IGHM enhancer 3, a.k.a. TFEA) gene by Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (FISH). Translocations involving the chromosomal region Xp11.2 are frequently detected in renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) which usually affect children and adolescents. The Xp11.2 translocation RCCs represent a predominant and aggressive subtype in the pediatric age group but can also occur in adults. Macroscopically, Xp11.2 translocation RCCs may mimic conventional clear cell RCCs and thus, differential diagnosis of Xp11.2 translocation RCCs is clinically important. Additionally, the unbalanced chromosomal translocation of der(17)t(X;17)(p11;q25) is cytogenetically characteristic for alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS). ASPS is a rare high grade mesenchymal malignancy affecting mainly adolescents. This translocation fuses the TFE3 gene at Xp11.23 to
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In heterostylous plant species, skewed morph ratios are not uncommon and may arise from a range of factors. Despite the recognized importance of skewed morph ratios on overall reproductive success within populations, little is known about the impact of skewed morph ratios on population genetic diversity and differentiation in heterostylous species. This study specifically aimed to clarify the effect of population size and morph bias on population genetic diversity and differentiation in the temperate forest herb Pulmonaria officinalis. This species is characterized by a distylous breeding system and shows morph-specific differences in reproductive success. METHODS: Genetic diversity was determined for 27 P. officinalis populations in northern Belgium by using eight recently developed microsatellite markers. Multiple regressions were used to assess the relationship between genetic diversity, morph bias and population size, and F(ST)-values were calculated for short- and ...
The spatial ecology of host-parasite communities. Parasite transmission occurs through contacts between susceptible individuals and the infective stages of parasites. Standard models of the epidemiological spread of infections typically assume random mixing of these contacts (the mass action assumption) typical of density-dependent transmission, which assumes contacts and transmission simply increase with the density of infected individuals in the total population (McCallum et al 2001; Begon et al 2002; Fenton et al 2002). In reality, however, these contacts are likely to show varying degrees of non-random structure, arising from the spatial arrangement of individuals, environmental heterogeneity and social or behavioural constraints that restrict individual movement.. Obviously, the mode of transmission of a parasite will affect its spatial dynamics of transmission. Many parasites transmit either via long-lived infective stages in the environment (e.g., many parasitic helminths) or via ...

This is probably a good time to point out that a lot of people thought Dan Duquette was crazy when he traded Jeremy Guthrie to the Colorado Rockies for starting pitcher Jason Hammel and reliever Matt Lindstrom. Of course, he was crazy like a fox.
This is just a few points that might help you realise that we are not being accurately informed about the true reality of this crisis. There are a considerable number of scientists who disagree with the way this problem is being dealt with. The mainstream media are mostly unquestioning the line fed by SAGE (the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies), suggesting that were are experiencing a second wave of the covid virus pandemic and we should experience even more deaths than the first wave unless we introduce severe measures and lockdown.. Time will tell, but I feel history will show that the second wave will not occur in any significant way, other than the normal rise in respiratory infections to be expected for this time of year. What will we say to our children? This is not even the first occasion, this is not the first time this has happened. In 2009 Swine flu kept the world in suspense for almost a year. A massive vaccination campaign was mounted to put a stop to the anticipated ...
Meanwhile, my daughter, who was just starting 7th grade, was launched into playing JV soccer. She suffered a knee injury about a month in. I demanded that she baby it. Ten days on ice, no practice, elevation, Advil. Our house was starting to look like an infirmary. But they loved their game. Each one, despite the obvious trauma, loved being on the field. Yet my concern, was not with my daughter. Her coach was great. She insisted that the knee heal. She saw into Annas future, and didnt want this to be a game-ender for her. Football, on the other hand, was a totally different beast. Play til you puke. Play til you bleed. Play til you die. One kid broke his arm. He was back on the field in two weeks. Another fractured an ankle--back out there three weeks later. My son had a bad lung infection at the very end of the season, so couldnt play the last (unofficial, mind you) game of the season. His neck was still bothering him, he was on antibiotics, coughing. We still drove an hour to the game so ...

Federated protocols are preferable, but that preference is subject to being outweighed by better features. Facebook has a lot of advantages that more than make up for its lack of federation in the evaluation of its users.. Email is sort of a modernisation of writing actual letters to one another, but letter-writing isnt the only form of communication throughout history, and it makes sense that people prefer platforms that dont constrain them to that particular model. Facebook, for instance, gives users a default monolithic chat with each of their contacts, like how a cell phone handles text messages. This simple form of communication without subject lines, complicated in-reply-to trees, signature disclaimers, etc., fits with their positioning as a less formal medium than email. Further, the ability to publicly post content without sending it to anyone in particular, and making the history of those posts accessible to anyone who cares to look, is not really achievable by email and more akin to ...

How do we distinguish a difference between physiology 1 and physiology 2? The answer lies in the PAd - Ppao difference [3, 5]. In example 2 [e.g. WHO II pulmonary hypertension], the PAd - Ppao difference will remain small - the PAd and Ppao will rise together; the difference is normally less than 6 mmHg. In example 1 [e.g. WHO I pulmonary hypertension], the PAd rises much more than the Ppao.. Implications for Practice. It should be clear from the aforementioned, that it is not adequate to imply mechanisms from the cPVR alone, especially with respect to the pulmonary vascular tree. Noting an increase in the cPVR in response to an intervention should be followed with an inquiry into why the cPVR increased. Was it driven by a change in the pressure gradient [numerator] and if so, how? Did the PAd increase with respect to the Ppao [i.e. a true increase in resistance - thought experiment 1], or did the transpulmonary gradient rise solely because of increased PAs with preserved PAd-Ppao gradient [i.e. ...

The English Eccentric is a captivating subject and prolific author David Long explores just why England was blessed with so many quirky people. He studies their bizarre legacy including the many strange buildings they left behind, not just follies but recreations of exotic palaces. His essays include why eccentrics still have a continuing fascination and highlights the most notable (not just the most famous) in his entertaining essays. In addition to a useful timeline which sets the scene, the book will show readers where they can see the long-lasting legacy of the eccentric for themselves from Brighton Pavilion to the follies at Stourhead and Castle Howard. ...
One morning, when I had been with my family for about a month, my wife said she was going to take a walk. I took her along, and we walked in the woods. I told her that we had got to do a strength exercise. I started off slowly, to make sure that she was in good spirits. She nodded her agreement. I then set up to help us. I was a bear, a big, tough monster. He made a great challenge for her to train with. You might feel like a little girl learning to play with a Barbie doll, because most people simply arent built to be strong. There are times when you might feel like that, and you can just stop. You cant beat yourself up ...
