Windhoek. Namibia will leave its first footprint among those of the major world-class players in the beef export trade within the next month when official exports of Namibian beef by Meatco to the USA commence.. Manager of corporate affairs at Meatco Rosa Tobias yesterday told New Era that September 12 marked the day of implementation, when Namibia can start exporting meat into the USA market.. "Meatco is looking forward to this exciting milestone that will put Namibia on par with other major world-class players in the beef trade, and Meatco is more than geared up for the task ahead, which should result in the actual exports taking place within the next month," she noted.. Meatco Namibia joined the application process to export meat into that market in 2002 when the government of Namibia requested approval to export meat (beef) products to the United States.. Namibia stated that - if approved - its immediate intent was to export boneless raw beef products, such as primal cuts, chuck, blade and ...
Peoples Weather is not only a channel with weather, it also tells stories of conservation and sustainability. The channel is small but we have established a foundation to grow. There are some many unique Namibian stories that are untapped, so we would like to create a Namibia block on the channel.". Similar initiatives by MultiChoice Namibia have resulted in Namibian content being added to the DStv platform including the Namibian drama The Third Will, as well as the addition of local radio stations to the DStv and GOtv audio bouquets, soon to be adding Rapids FM, Shipi FM on GOtv and 99Fm and Omulunga Radio on DStv.. MultiChoice Namibia general manager Roger Gertze said: "International channels are also moving towards localising some of their shows by co-producing with local filmmakers, as well as licensing more local content. The producers who attended the session were taken through the business of television, particularly the how tos of pitching a programme to a TV channel, as well as ...

Peter Bridgeford, will be present and launch his book "Conservation Pioneers in Namibia" and Stories by Game Rangers on 19 February at 19:30 at the Namibia Scientific Society.. The book is of personal stories and experiences of the many people who worked in the conservation field over the years, in South West Africa and later Namibia.. This book is also a tribute to the hard work, dedication and sacrifice made by those early pioneering rangers from 1952, all staff members were known as rangers and they filled the dual roles of rangers/ tourist officers and rangers/maintenance staff. Together they created parks and facilities of a word class standard, therefore this book salutes them.. There are over 150 photographs, 6 maps and several drawings, with a brief history of the origin of conservation in Namibia, followed by stories and biographies of mare than 55 people, many of them pioneers in the field of conservation.. The book also tells how the decision by German colonial civil servants, mare ...

The economy is heavily dependent on the extraction and processing of minerals for export. Mining accounts for 20% of GDP. Rich alluvial diamond deposits make Namibia a primary source for gem-quality diamonds. Namibia is the fourth-largest exporter of nonfuel minerals in Africa, the world´s fifth-largest producer of uranium, and the producer of large quantities of lead, zinc, tin, silver, and tungsten. The mining sector employs only about 3% of the population while about half of the population depends on subsistence agriculture for its livelihood. Namibia normally imports about 50% of its cereal requirements; in drought years food shortages are a major problem in rural areas. A high per capita GDP, relative to the region, hides the world´s worst inequality of income distribution. The Namibian economy is closely linked to South Africa with the Namibian dollar pegged one-to-one to the South African rand. Privatization of several enterprises in coming years may stimulate long-run foreign ...

The comments argue that the FSIS does not explain how it will prevent diseases like Rift Valley fever or Namibias other endemic foreign animal diseases, foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), from entering the United States. The comments point to evidence showing that a section of the veterinary fence that is supposed to restrict FMD outbreaks to Namibias northern region has been taken down by authorities to provide elephants and buffaloes more access to range. Further, the comments raise concerns about Namibias own import practices of importing both cattle and beef from countries not free of FMD ...

My apologies that Ive been very quiet here on Georneys recently. My travel and work schedule were extremely hectic during the past month… plus I was working on a couple of scientific papers related to my PhD thesis research. However, life is a bit calmer now, so hopefully Ill catch up on some blogging soon! I want to share some more pictures from my trip to Australia, amongst other things.. Ill start with a few pictures from my recent trip to Namibia. Recently, I had the good fortune to spend a couple of weeks in the Sperrgebiet in Namibia doing some fieldwork on behalf of De Beers. I do not blog about my industry work here on Georneys (unless the work is published and thus in the open domain), so I cant share the details of my trip. However, I can share a few pictures of some of the "tourist attractions" that I saw during my field work.. Sperrgebiet means "Prohibited Area" in German (the Germans colonized Namibia, so some German words and town names are still found in the country). The ...

Discussion. The game farming industry is important for the Namibian economy and encourages tourism through hunting safaris and trophy hunting expeditions. Kudu comprise a large portion of the game farming industry in Namibia and also come into contact with several domestic species. Thus the prevalence of BVDV in kudu may pose a threat to the cattle farming industry in Namibia and neighbouring countries.. BVDV serology results showed a high seropositivity (68%) amongst all samples (kudu and eland). In this study, BVDV seropositivity of kudu in Namibia was determined to be 71% (27/38), which was similar to previous studies in Namibia (Depner et al. 1991; Soiné et al. 1992). For the South African samples, a seroprevalence of 71% (5/7) was observed. As no other study regarding the seroprevalence of BVDV in kudu in South Africa has been performed, these results can be compared only with those from other countries in the southern African region, such as Namibia (66%) (Depner et al 1991; Soiné et al. ...

Tswana. The Coloureds and Basters share similar genealogical origins and cultural attributes (such as home language) but nonetheless maintain distinctly separate communal identities, as do most white Namibians and black Namibians, respectively.. The Ovambo make up about half of Namibias people. The Ovambo, Kavango, and East Caprivian peoples, who occupy the relatively well-watered and wooded northern part of the country, are settled farmers and herders. Historically, they have shown little interest in the central and southern parts of Namibia, where conditions do not suit their traditional way of life.. Until the early 1900s, these tribes had little contact with the Nama, Damara, and Herero, who roamed the central part of the country vying for control of sparse pastureland. German colonial rule destroyed the warmaking ability of the tribes but did not erase their identities or traditional organization. People from the more populous north have settled throughout the country in recent decades as ...

WINDHOEK, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- Namibia on Friday night launched a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) online hub which is meant to be a platform for continuous and meaningful engagement for citizens and stakeholders on the Sustainable Development Goals.. According to United Nations Development Programme communications associate Margretha Kampulu, the hub will facilitate the dissemination of information on the progress of SDG implementation in Namibia across diverse areas and stakeholders.. She said, the hub will further allow stakeholders to exchange experiences and best practices, and in turn, will foster a common understanding across national stakeholders.. "This collective understanding will enable coordination among all entities working towards achieving the SDGs. The ...
LM & Others v Government of Namibia is a legal case regarding coerced sterilisation of three women. The woman argued they had not properly consented to sterilization due to not being informed of the contents of the consent form, not understanding the medical staff, or coercion by being told their Caesareans would not be performed unless they consented to the sterilization. All the women were HIV-positive and believe they were targeted for sterilization based on this. In 2012, the Namibian High Court held that the women had been coercively sterilised. On appeal, the Supreme Court of Namibia upheld the High Court decision on 3 November 2014. The three women applicants had been sterilised at a public hospital when giving birth via Caesarean section. The women argued that any purported consent to the sterilisation had been coerced as they had either not been told the contents of the consent forms they were signing, did not understand the medical staff, or had been told by doctors that their ...
As Namibia moves into its third decade of independence, early optimism regarding the country`s ability to rapidly overcome the legacy of apartheid has been tempered by serious concern that the needs and expectations of a substantial portion of the population are not being met. With a continuing unemployment rate of over 37 percent and only one-fifth of the 20,000 Namibian graduates each year finding jobs, the Government of the Republic of Namibia (GRN) is vigorously seeking ways to accelerate income growth and job creation.

1. Introduction. Namibia has 415 MW of installed generation capacity shared among four conventional power plants (Ruacana hydropower station, Van Eck coal-fired plant, Anixas and Paratus diesel plants) (Nampower, 2011a). This power system is ageing, inefficient and insufficient. Consequently, the national power utility, Nampower, relies on imports (e.g. 60% in 2010) from the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) to secure the electricity supply. However, a growth in electricity demand estimated at 4% and the expiry of the import agreement with Zimbabwe in 2013 will expose Namibia to electricity shortage. Nampower forecasts a power supply deficit of 80 MW by the end of 2012, increasing to 300 MW by 2015. Thus, a revision of the current system as well as new power plant procurements, are necessary. In this context, conventional energy technologies are particularly considered since they are less capital intensive. For example, Nampower is currently studying the feasibility of a new 150 to 300 MW ...

South Africa occupied the German colony of South-West Africa during World War I and administered it as a mandate until after World War II, when it annexed the territory. In 1966, the Marxist South-West Africa Peoples Organization (SWAPO) guerrilla group launched a war of independence for the area that became Namibia, but it was not until 1988 that South Africa agreed to end its administration in accordance with a UN peace plan for the entire region. Namibia has been governed by SWAPO since the country won independence in 1990, though the party has dropped much of its Marxist ideology. Prime Minister Hage GEINGOB was elected president in November 2014 in a landslide victory, replacing Hifikepunye POHAMBA who stepped down after serving two terms. The Afrobarometer project was designed to assess attitudes toward democracy, markets, and civil society in several sub-Saharan African nations, and to track the evolution of such attitudes in those nations over time. This particular survey was concerned with the attitudes and opinions of the citizens of Namibia. Respondents were asked to rate Namibias President Nujoma and his administrations overall performance, and to state the most important issues facing the nation. Opinions were gathered on the role of the government in improving the economy, whether corruption existed in local and national government, whether government officials were responsive to problems of the general population, and whether local government officials, the police, the courts, the overall criminal justice system, the media, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the government broadcasting service could be trusted. Respondents were polled on their knowledge of government officials, their level of personal ...

Is that ball in the photo, with the red and yellow splotches on it the ball that fell in Namibia? If thats the actual ball, it didnt fall from space.. It could not have plunged through the atmosphere without reaching high enough temps to have scorched the paint off of it and turned it black at the minimum; and quite possibly have badly deformed or melted it at the worst. Probably picked up by a tornado someplace, and Namibias where it came down.. ...

Downloadable! This thesis consists of an introduction and four papers exploring various aspects of the Namibian economy. These aspects cover shadow pricing, environmental valuation and capital market development in Namibia. Paper I estimates the shadow prices of capital, labour and foreign exchange for the Namibian economy. The results suggest that the shadow price of capital for Namibia is 7.2%. The economic costs of Namibian labour, as a share of financial costs, are 32% for urban semi- and unskilled labour, and 54% for rural semi- and unskilled labour. The economic cost of foreign labour as a share of financial costs is 59%. The estimated shadow exchange rate factor is 4% for the Namibian economy. Paper II derives a set of accounting price ratios (APRs) for the various economic sectors of Namibia by using the Semi-Input-Output (SIO) Technique. An APR is the ratio between the market or financial price and the efficiency or economic value of a specific commodity or sector, which is useful for the

Report written by Charley Hesse.. This trip was the 4th annual Audubon Shop Namibia/Botswana custom tour. The tried and tested itinerary remained unchanged from previous years although we did get to stay at some great new accommodations for the first time. From Windhoek we dropped off the escarpment and crossed the Namib Desert, experiencing an ever-changing landscape and finding the rare Hartmanns Mountain Zebra. In the Walvis Bay area we found the Namibian endemic Dune Lark and saw extraordinary numbers of both flamingos on the coast. The famous inselberg of Spitzkoppe produced the rare Herero Chat against a stunning backdrop and clients were charmed by the incredible location of the Erongo Wilderness Lodge with all its interesting specialties, including the charismatic Rockrunner. Etosha National Park never disappoints and this year we had great action with many lions and elephants around waterholes during the day, and with the drought, especially large numbers of Black Rhinos at night. We ...
Tiri Masawi. Windhoek - The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), through the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), has releases N$10 million (approximately US$714 000) to avert the effects of a devastating drought on Namibian farmers over a six-month period.. Other partners to the project include the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry and two farmers unions - the Namibia National Farmers Union (NNFU) and Namibia Commercial Farmers Union (NECFU).. Namibia is currently experiencing the worst drought in 60 years which has also ravaged crops in neigbouring Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.. FAO Namibia country representative, Farai Zimudzi, said the project aims to reach 3,250 households (approximately 14,300 people) affected by drought that devastated the country during the 2018/2019 agricultural season.. She added that the initial project was formulated late December 2019, targeting five regions - Ohangwena, Omusati, Kunene, Hardap and Omaheke and was ...

The first European visitors to Namibia were the Portuguese. Initially the coast of Namibia was largely ignored. Further exploratory voyages occurred during the 1600s, but these were based out of Dutch colonies in the Cape. The first white explorer to travel overland from the Cape across the Orange River to Namibia was a Dutch elephant hunter in 1750.. He was swiftly followed by a progression of traders, hunters and missionaries. The Cape colony government then decided to put the ports of Angra Pequena (the present day Luderitz) and Walvis Bay under their protection as they perceived a threat from British, American and French colonisers and obviously saw the value of these ports. The ubiquitous missions began to spring up around 1805 with stations established in Windhoek, Rehoboth and Keetmanshoop towards the middle of the century.. It was around this time that Britain began to take an interest in the more lucrative areas of Namibia and in 1867 the country annexed the guano islands off the ...

Thanks for the memories! I taught grades 9-10 @ Opuwos Putavanga JSS a few years back. I can see my school (and I think my house!) from the air shot of Opuwo town, as well as so many of the dusty roads I hiked everyday: to the post office, bakery and stores. Kaokoland is true Africa (versus the Europized central cities of Windhoek, Omaruru, Swakop, etc.) and the inhabitants, the Himba, Namibias national treasure. The Himba courageously took on the Namibian & Angolan governments when they resisted the Epupa Falls hydroelectric dam project in the late 1990s. It would have wiped out their land and life they hold so precious. While tourists have added to many Himba village larders over the past since the war ended, constant western contact threatens their pastoral culture and traditions. Its such a complex and difficult situation, but such a stunningly beautiful landscape ...
