Elevated breast density is one of the strongest risk factors for non-familial breast cancer [1]. Recently, the International Breast Cancer Intervention Study-1 (IBIS-1) trial reported that women whose mammographic density declined by 10% within 12-18 months of initiating tamoxifen chemoprevention also had a marked reduction in cancer risk [2]; however, preliminary data suggested that in 30% of patients, tamoxifen failed to lower density and did not reduce cancer risk. Therefore, we hypothesize that breast density represents a biosensor of tamoxifen response, reflecting bioavailability and action of active drug metabolites. Although brain tumours have been documented and recorded since the nineteenth century, 2016 marked 90 years since Percival Bailey and Harvey Cushing coined the term glioblastoma multiforme. Since that time, although extensive developments in diagnosis and treatment have been made, relatively little improvement on prognosis has been achieved. The resilience of GBM thus makes treating this tumour one of the biggest challenges currently faced by neuro-oncology. Aggressive and robust development, coupled with difficulties of complete resection, drug delivery and therapeutic resistance to treatment are some of the main issues that this nemesis presents today. Dr. Dawn Bowdish and her PhD student Dessi Loukov collaborated with Dr. Monica Maly and Sara Karampatos (Rehabilitation Science) and found that monocytes were more activated and pro-inflammatory in women with osteoarthritis, and that elevated inflammation and body mass index were associated with increased monocyte activation. Further, the team found that women with osteoarthritis and more activated monocytes experienced worse pain than individuals with less activated monocytes. These findings highlight the importance of modulating inflammation and body mass to manage osteoarthritis and open up new avenues for therapeutic research..
