The search for a potential anticancer agent has been a challenge for scientists with regards to existence of side effects and drug resistance. Plant-derived anticancer agents are likely to be more effective in the cancer treatment [19]. In this study, evaluation of cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of extracts from stem bark of C. odontophyllum against human colorectal cancer cell HCT 116 was done and assessment of cytotoxic effect of acetone extract from stem bark of C. odontophyllum against normal colon cell CCD-18co was carried out.. From the MTT assay, acetone extract showed a higher cytotoxic effect compared with methanol extract whereas aqueous extract was not cytotoxic at 24 h of treatment. In the previous study, the same pattern of data was seen by all three extracts but at much higher IC50 values [10]. This may be because of the difference in the range of concentration used. The range of the concentration used in this study was smaller compared to the range of concentration used in the ...

A new essay with Joshua Rust.. In the first part, we summarize our empirical research on the moral behavior of ethics professors.. In the second part, we consider five possible explanations of our finding that ethics professors behave, on average, no better than do other professors.. Explanation 1: Philosophical moral reflection has no material impact on real-world moral behavior. Jonathan Haidt has called the view that explicit moral reflection does have a substantial effect on one's behavior "the rationalist delusion".. Explanation 2: Philosophical moral reflection influences real world moral behavior, but only in very limited domains of professional focus. Those domains are sufficiently narrow and limited that existing behavioral measures can't unequivocally detect them. Also, possibly, any improvement in such narrow domains might be cancelled out, in terms of overall moral behavior, by psychological factors like moral licensing or ego depletion.. Explanation 3: Philosophical moral reflection ...

Sometimes referred to as Indian frankincense, this deciduous tree is native to arid mountainous regions of India. A member of the Burseraceae family, which includes myrrh and frankincense, the plant provides a notable incense fragrance and is distinguished by its aromatic resin and oil. Like standard frankincense, Boswellia extract is collected from an incision in the trunk, with a sap-like oleoresin emerging from the tree. In long-held Ayurvedic traditions, Boswellia serrata is known as Salai guggul or Shallaki, and has been used for ages due to its health-supporting qualities. Today, science has validated many of Indian frankincense's benefits and shown them to largely stem from its ability to modulate inflammation.**. Research has reinforced the inflammation-modulating properties of Boswellia serrata, which have been attributed to beneficial compounds called triterpenes, most notably boswellic acid. Boswellia serrata's active compounds are believed to influence the creation of inflammatory ...

People's moods can influence moral judgment. Such influences may arise because moods affect moral emotion, or because moods affect moral thought. The present study provides evidence that, at least in the footbridge dilemma, moods affect moral thought. The results of two experiments are reported in which, after induction of positive, negative, or neutral moods and presentation of the footbridge scenario, participants were asked one of two differentially framed closing questions. In the active frame, participants were asked whether they would be active and push the man, making thoughts about pushing accessible; in the passive frame, they were asked whether they would be passive and not push the man, making thoughts about not pushing accessible. The results show that affective influences on moral judgment depended on participants' decision frame. Compared to neutral moods, positive moods induced utilitarian responding--i.e., deciding to push--in the active decision frame, but induced
Even a superficial perusal of the book makes it clear that this position is deeply conflicted. First, there's a long list of vital moral principles that it has very little to say about. There's no outright condemnation of slavery, even though that's clearly one of the most important moral issues confronting the human race. There's no condemnation of genocide even though that's consistently been one of the most profoundly immoral things that we do to each other. There's no condemnation of pedophilia or child sex abuse even though to most people the child sex abuser is the most despicable and evil person they can imagine. There's no condemnation of child physical abuse. There's no clear remark on abortion. There are no clear remarks on vital end of life issues like euthanasia. Now consider the biggest and most far reaching moral issues that you will encounter in your life. Most, if not all of these will be on that list. Not only does the Bible not offer any clear guidance where it is obviously ...
New scientific advances have created previously unheard of possibilities for enhancing combatants' performance. Future war fighters may be smarter, stronger, and braver than ever before. If these technologies are safe, is there any reason to reject their use? In this article, I argue that the use of enhancements is constrained by the importance of maintaining the moral responsibility of military personnel. This is crucial for two reasons: the military's ethical commitments require military personnel to be morally responsible agents, and moral responsibility is necessary for integrity and the moral emotions of guilt and remorse, both of which are important for moral growth and psychological well-being. Enhancements that undermined combatants' moral responsibility would therefore undermine the military's moral standing and would harm combatants' well-being. A genuine commitment to maintaining the military's ethical standards and the well-being of combatants therefore requires a careful analysis of ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Outcome-focused judgements of moral dilemmas in schizophrenia. AU - McGuire, Jonathan. AU - Brüne, Martin. AU - Langdon, Robyn. PY - 2017/7. Y1 - 2017/7. N2 - Previous research on moral judgement in healthy adults suggests a complex interplay of automatic, emotional and deliberative processing. We aimed to advance understanding of these processes by examining moral judgement in individuals with schizophrenia, a population characterised by social-cognitive deficits and interpersonal difficulties. Forty-five patients with schizophrenia and 27 healthy controls judged high-conflict moral dilemmas in response to 3rd-person (i.e. "Is it morally okay to [perform X]?") and 1st-person (i.e. "Would you [perform X]?") probes. Controls were less utilitarian for 3rd-person than 1st-person probes, while this discrepancy did not hold for patients. Utilitarianism in patients correlated with higher levels of interpersonal conflict. Findings suggest that people with schizophrenia focus equally on ...

In the course and development of Western culture, the Judeo-Christian and the Graeco-Roman heritages became inextricably entwined becoming the twin pillars of Western civilization that have withstood the test of time. With the Hebrew experience, the Ten Commandments, the Old Testament, man was seen as having free will and having the capacity to do good or evil - i.e., develop moral conduct, for which he would be rewarded or punished in the afterlife.. Christianity and the New Testament came almost a millennium later. The resulting Judeo-Christian morality formulated a code of moral conduct to preserve order in society and cement the fellowship of men. Constantine the Great (reigned A.D. 306-337) and his successors made Christianity and Christian religious morality the order of the day in the Roman Empire. The Graeco-Roman pillar stemmed from the natural philosophers of ancient Greece in the 6th century B.C. But it was not cemented, as far as moral conduct and ethics, until the advent of Socrates ...

Cites Embryonic Stem Cell Research at UGA As Proof That It's Possible to Pursue Hope of Science Without Crossing Moral Line. WASHINGTON - Citing the stem cell research being conducted at the University of Georgia, U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) today said there is a way to conduct embryonic stem cell research without destroying human life.. "As we go though this difficult, tenuous debate over a subject of immense importance to the American people, let's look for ways that we can be respectful of human life and open the doors for further development in science in embryonic stem cells. I would submit there are ways to do both," Isakson said in a speech on the Senate floor.. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is asking the Senate to vote Tuesday on three stem cell bills: one that bans fetal farming; one that allows federal funding for stem cell research on non-human embryos; and one that was passed by the House, H.R.810, that would allow federal funding for embryonic stem cell research on human ...

TY - THES. T1 - Statistical models for expert judgement and wear prediction. T2 - Dissertation. AU - Pulkkinen, Urho. N1 - Project code: aut9412 PY - 1994. Y1 - 1994. N2 - This thesis studies the statistical analysis of expert judgements and prediction of wear. The point of view adopted is the one of information theory and Bayesian statistics. A general Bayesian framework for analyzing both the expert judgements and wear prediction is presented. Information theoretic interpretations are given for some averaging techniques used in the determination of concensus distributions. Further, information theoretic models are compared with a Bayesian model. The general Bayesian framework is then applied in analyzing expert judgements based on ordinal comparisons. In this context, the value of information lost in the ordinal comparison process is analyzed by applying decision theoretic concepts. Article ID: DD135 , By: Scott B. Rae. Summary The new reproductive technologies give great hope to infertile couples and make many new reproductive arrangements possible. They also raise many difficult moral issues. Artificial insemination by husband is considered moral, but artificial insemination by donor raises questions about a third party entering reproduction. In vitro fertilization is acceptable within limits: the couple should ensure that no embryos are left in storage and that the risk of selective termination is avoided. Commercial surrogate motherhood raises problems because it is the equivalent of selling children, can be exploitative of the surrogate, and violates a mother's fundamental right to raise her child. Even altruistic surrogacy raises questions about the degree of detachment the mother must have from her unborn child to successfully give it up after birth. On March 27, 1986, Mary Beth Whitehead gave birth to a little girl whom she named Sara. That same day, Elizabeth and ...
Japanese barberry is a woody shrub common in New England, where it is often found in dense populations in forests. Current models predict that Japanese barberry can establish in all but coastal Maine and the northernmost parts of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.. But based on Japanese barberry's positive response to warm temperatures, it is apparent that these northern habitats will only become more suitable under climate change, allowing prolific population growth throughout the region, the researchers said.. On the other hand, their findings indicate that garlic mustard may decline considerably in southern New England but instead appear in force in northern region and southern Canada. Better performance in cooler climates suggests that warmer temperatures resulting from climate change may render southern New England uninhabitable for this species, which produces copious seeds and dominates the forest floors where it invades.. "We have not dodged the invasion, only shifted the focus," noted ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Asymmetrical protection of neostriatal neurons against transient forebrain ischemia by unilateral dopamine depletion. AU - Ren, Yubo. AU - Li, Xiaoda. AU - Xu, Zao C.. PY - 1997/7. Y1 - 1997/7. N2 - Neurons in the dorsal neostriatum are highly vulnerable to transient cerebral ischemia. It has been suggested that excessive dopamine release during ischemia may play an important role in the pathogenesis of postischemic cell death in the neostriatum. However, it remains controversial whether depletion of dopamine protects neurons in the neostriatum against ischemic insult. In the present study, transient forebrain ischemia was induced using the four-vessel occlusion method. Ischemic depolarization was used as an indication of completed ischemia. Under our experimental conditions, ischemia that produces ~21 min ischemic depolarization caused more than 90% of cell death in the dorsolateral neostriatum. Using such ischemia as a standard insult, the effect of dopamine depletion on ...
Understanding the history of forests and their species' demographic responses to past disturbances is important for predicting impacts of future environmental changes. Tropical rainforests of the Guineo-Congolian region in Central Africa are believed to have survived the Pleistocene glacial periods in a few major refugia, essentially centred on mountainous regions close to the Atlantic Ocean. We tested this hypothesis by investigating the phylogeographic structure of a widespread, ancient rainforest tree species, Symphonia globulifera L. f. (Clusiaceae), using plastid DNA sequences (chloroplast DNA [cpDNA], psbA-trnH intergenic spacer) and nuclear microsatellites (simple sequence repeats, SSRs). SSRs identified four gene pools located in Benin, West Cameroon, South Cameroon and Gabon, and São Tomé. This structure was also apparent at cpDNA. Approximate Bayesian Computation detected recent bottlenecks approximately dated to the last glacial maximum in Benin, West Cameroon and São

Introduction. The ethical analysis of our moral obligations to animals, as well as practical decisions regarding many issues in veterinary medicine, both presuppose some account of "animal welfare" - that is, of what makes an animal's life go well or poorly. Therefore, it is essential that we think critically about the concept of animal welfare. This paper briefly explores some philosophical issues in the definition and assessment of animal welfare.. Two Different Senses of "Animal Welfare". The first thing to clarify is the way in which I'm using the term "animal welfare." In both moral philosophy and ordinary language (as concerns humans), the term "welfare" is roughly synonymous with "wellbeing." To say that an individual "has a welfare" is to say that her life can go better or worse from her perspective, and to talk about her welfare is to talk about her interests - what are the things that make her life go better or worse for her? How should we conceptualize her wellbeing in the abstract? ...
Cyclophosphamide (CPA) represents a widely used anti-cancer prodrug that is converted by liver cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes into the primary metabolite 4-hydroxycyclophosphamide (4-OH-CPA), followed by non-enzymatic generation of the bioactive metabolites phosphoramide mustard and acrolein. The use of human drug metabolites as authentic standards to evaluate their toxicity is essential for drug development. However, the chemical synthesis of 4-OH-CPA is complex and leads to only low yields and undesired side products. In past years, fungal unspecific peroxygenases (UPOs) have raised to powerful biocatalysts. They can exert the identical selective oxyfunctionalization of organic compounds and drugs as known for CYP enzymes with hydrogen peroxide being used as sole cosubstrate. Herein, we report the efficient enzymatic hydroxylation of CPA using the unspecific peroxygenase from Marasmius rotula (MroUPO) in a simple reaction design. Depending on the conditions used the primary liver metabolite 4-OH-CPA,
Today, about 6 percent of the surface of Earth is covered in rainforests, and more than half of all the world's plant and animal species live in them. The shear biomass of plants in the rainforest help produce about 40 percent of Earth's oxygen.. Estimates of the Earth's biodiversity originally came from studies in Panama, where tree species were logged and the number of insects within them categorized and counted. Estimates range from 10 to 100 million species on earth, most of them being insects found in the tropical rain forests.. The tropical rainforests have more kinds of trees than any other biome in the world. In a rainforest in South America, scientists counted from 100 to 300 species of tree in 2.5 acre sections of the forest. Not all plants in the rainforest are trees though. While they are the easiest to observe, there is a great diversity of epiphytes, plants that live on other plants, that make the rainforest their home. Plants like orchids live on rainforest trees high in the ...
Background Berberine can be an isoquinoline alkaloid trusted to boost the glucidic and lipidic information of individuals with hypercholesterolemia, metabolic symptoms, and type 2 diabetes. draw out of (titrated as 60% in silymarin), for a complete intake of just one 1,000 mg/day time of berberine and 210 mg/day time of silymarin. Outcomes Both treatments likewise improved fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglyceride, and liver organ enzyme amounts, whereas glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ideals had been reduced to a larger extent from the set mixture. Summary The association of berberine and silymarin proven far better than berberine only in reducing HbA1c, when given at the same 314245-33-5 manufacture dosage and by means of standardized components in type 2 diabetics. (goldenseal), (Coptis or goldthread), (Oregon grape), (barberry), and (tree turmeric).17 Regardless of its features like a glucose-and lipid-lowering agent, berberine continues ...
Electroretinograms (ERGs) were recorded according to previously published procedures. 23,24 Five healthy rabbits were dark-adapted overnight prior to ERG recordings. All further procedures were carried out under dim red light (λ: 650 nm). Anesthesia was induced by intramuscular injection of ketamine (50 mg/kg, Imalgène 1000; Merial, Lyon, France) and xylazine (10 mg/kg, Rompun 2%; Bayer Pharma, Leverkusen, Germany). The pupils were dilated with 0.5% tropicamide (Ciba Vision Ophthalmics, Blagnac, France). After approximately 5 minutes, animals were positioned in a warming plate that maintained a constant body temperature, and the corneal electrodes were put in place. The ERG was recorded via corneal electrodes (thin gold wire with a 4-mm ring end); reference and ground electrodes (silver needles) were placed on the forehead and tail, respectively. The recording setup featured a Ganzfeld bowl, an amplifier, and a computer-based control and recording unit (RETI port/scan 21; Stasche & Finger ...
