In Jewish liturgy, the myrtle is one of the four sacred plants (Four Species) of Sukkot, the Feast of Tabernacles representing the different types of personality making up the community. The myrtle having fragrance but not pleasant taste, represents those who have good deeds to their credit despite not having knowledge from Torah study. The three branches are lashed or braided together by the worshipers a palm leaf, a willow bough, and a myrtle branch. The etrog or citron is the fruit held in the other hand as part of the lulav wave ritual. In Jewish mysticism, the myrtle represents the phallic, masculine force at work in the universe. For this reason myrtle branches were sometimes given the bridegroom as he entered the nuptial chamber after a wedding (Tos. Sotah 15:8; Ketubot 17a). Myrtles are both the symbol and scent of Eden (BhM II: 52; Sefer ha-Hezyonot 17). The Hechalot text Merkavah Rabbah requires one to suck on a myrtle leaves as an element of a theurgic ritual. Kabbalists link myrtle ...

So many different names! This is one of Eastwoodhills most notable trees, and it is well placed to greet you as you return to the garden and be admired.. The orange bark myrtle is a member of the Myrtaceae and is related to the Eucalyptus, manuka, kanuka, pohutakawa and guava. Small white flowers smother the tree over summer. The fruit is small and black, sweet and edible, but it takes many to make a meal. Blackbirds and kereru readily eat them and seedlings come up occasionally in the park.. The main feature of the tree is the peeling bark with colours ranging from white to orange. Orange bark myrtle rivals the Californian Madrona Arbutus menziesii for its coloured bark. In Argentina it is evidently called the Bambi tree as the background of the Bambi film was shot in a forest of orange bark myrtle trees.. This tree was purchased from Hilliers in England in 1950 and Douglas Cook grew several from cuttings, two of which are planted down Cabbage Tree Avenue and in Pear Park. The plants can be ...

Natural products, such as plants extract, either as pure compounds or as standardized extracts, provide unlimited opportunities for new and selective drug discoveries because of the unmatched availability of chemical diversity [16]. The use of herbal medicines in Asia represents a long history of human interactions with the environment. Plants used for traditional medicine contain a wide range of substances that can be used to treat various diseases such as infectious diseases [5]. In the present investigation, we evaluated antileishmanial activity of methanolic extract and essential oil of M. communis and their cytotoxic activities against J774-A1 cells on an in vitro model.. Our findings demonstrated that M. communis, particularly its essential oil, significantly (P,0.05) inhibited the growth rate of promastigote and amastigote forms of L. ...

If you spot yellow-green insects causing damage to crepe myrtle foliage, then a pest called the crepe myrtle aphid is attacking your tree. Under normal circumstances, beneficial insects such as the lady bug keep this pest under control, but spraying pesticides on your plant might reduce the population of beneficial insects and leaves the aphids without any natural predators. You can control the aphid by reducing the use of pesticides, which increases the predator insects, washing the leaves with a spray of water or treating the plant with a horticultural soap,. ...
As the crape myrtle bark scale spreads throughout Texas, one of the first questions we hear is "will the scale kill my tree?". The answer appears to be "no", at least not often. To date weve not been able to show any crape myrtle tree death as a result of a bark scale infestation. But like many sap-feeding scale insects, these little scales can stress and reduce the appearance of the trees, while producing a prodigious amount of sticky "honeydew" that can coat the leaves and anything under the tree (including freshly washed cars).. Thanks to Drs. John Hopkins and Jim Robbins of the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, we can now show you what we believe is likely to be another impact of these scales on trees-namely, smaller flower clusters and reduced blooming. The above picture was taken of two trees at a church in Little Rock, Arkansas. The tree on the left was treated with Zylam® Systemic Insecticide on the 28th of May, and the one on the right was left untreated. Zylam® ...

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and the Department of Conservation (DOC) are working together to address a confirmed find of the fungal plant disease myrtle rust on Kermadec pōhutukawa trees on Raoul Island.. Myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii), also known as guava rust and eucalyptus rust, is a fungal infection that could have serious impacts on a wide range of plants in the myrtle family. If it were to enter mainland New Zealand, it could affect iconic New Zealand plants pōhutukawa, kānuka, mānuka and rātā, as well as commercially-grown species such as eucalyptus, guava and feijoa.. MPIs Director Readiness and Response, Geoff Gwyn, says myrtle rust spores can carry long distances on the wind, however, the Raoul Island location is very remote from mainland New Zealand.. "Its over one thousand kilometres to the northeast of Northland and access to the island is strictly controlled and only by permit. Those visiting Raoul Island are mainly scientists and maintenance people, ...
