Background and aims: Urinary tract infection is considered as one of the most common clinical problems in the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the interaction effects of pharmaceutical and antibacterial activity of methanol extracts of Callistemon viminalis on a number of bacteria that cause urinary tract infections. Methods: In this experimental research, after drying leaves, extracts were prepared using methanol. The minimum lethal activity of 500, 250 and 125 µg/ml concentrations of the extracts on the standard bacteria was tested using disk diffusion and dilution method. In order to study the synergistic and antagonistic effect, a standard strains of bacteria was cultured on the medium containing methanol extract and then antibiotic discs were put on it. Results: According to the results of disk diffusion test in Agar, the highest inhibition zone diameter in 500 µg/ml was related to Staphylococcus epidermidis and the minimum diameter in this concentration was related to E. coli.
Leaf surface stomata from the Ohia Lehua tree (Metrosideros polymorpha), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Stomata (plural of stoma) are tiny openings in the epidermis of a plant that are surrounded by pairs of crescent-shaped cells, called guard cells, that facilitate gas exchange. Ohia Lehua is Hawaiis most abundant native tree. It is often the first tree life to appear after a lava flow. It can survive in a many environments, including elevations between 1,000 and 9,000 feet above sea level. It is a hardwood that was used by ancient Hawaiians to carve temple idols, canoes, poi bowls and spears. Magnification: x140 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. - Stock Image C032/4516

In Myrtaceae (Myrteae), the diploid chromosome number 2n = 2x = 22 is the most common, although variations of ploidy level occur, with some triploid ( 2n = 3x = 33) and tetraploid (2n = 4x = 44) records. Karyotype details in this group are scarce because the chromosomes are small (, 2 mu m). In this work, we carried out a karyotypic analysis of 15 species of Myrtaceae grouped in different subtribes and genera. Measurements of chromosome length (long arm, L; short arm, S) were taken and several karyotypic parameters were calculated for each species. The karyotypes in fleshy-fruited taxa (Myrteae) were more varied than in the other previously analysed dry-fruited group ( Eucalyptus, Eucalypteae), in which the chromosomes were exclusively metacentric. Species of Mycosphaerella and their anamorphs are commonly found on the leaves of Myrtaceae, many of which are defoliated by these pathogens. The taxonomy of these fungi has been based on minute morphological differences, and virtually nothing is known regarding their relatedness to each other. In this study, we present a phylogeny of 30 species of Mycosphaerella or their anamorphs from myrtaceous hosts, based on sequence data from the ITS regions of the ribosomal RNA operon. Fifteen of the species were also analysed for the 5′ end of the large subunit (28S), which produced a phylogeny similar to that obtained for the ITS data set. The Mycosphaerella species included in this analysis are all regarded as representatives of section Plaga, and appear to represent a monophyletic assemblage. Mycosphaerella lateralis was the only species shown to have a wide host range. In general, species clustered together based on their anamorph genera. Species with Colletogloeopsis and Stenella anamorphs always ...
Spotted wing drosophila (SWD, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), Diptera: Drosophilidae) is recognized as an economically important pest in North America and Europe as well as in Asia. Assessments were made for fumigant and contact toxicities of six Myrtaceae plant essential oils (EOs) and their components to find new alternative types of insecticides active against SWD. Among the EOs tested, Leptospermum citratum EO, consisting mainly of geranial and neral, exhibited effective fumigant activity. Median lethal dose (LD50; mg/L) values of L. citratum were 2.39 and 3.24 for males and females, respectively. All tested EOs except Kunzea ambigua EO exhibited effective contact toxicity. LD50 (µg/fly) values for contact toxicity of manuka and kanuka were 0.60 and 0.71, respectively, for males and 1.10 and 1.23, respectively, for females. The LD50 values of the other 3 EOs-L. citratum, allspice and clove bud were 2.11-3.31 and 3.53-5.22 for males and females, respectively. The non-polar fraction of manuka and

Anther form and structure across the taxonomic groups inVerticordia were examined. The three anther types which were recognised - rectangular, oblong and saccate, accord well with the three subgenera into which the genus has been divided. The sporogenous part of the anther has a fairly typical angiosperm anatomy. However in many species there is a small or large gland in the upper filament/connective which contains lipidic contents. The anatomy of this structure is based on that of the oil glands which are ubiquitous in Myrtaceae primary tissues. However the gland is usually much larger than these and is schizolysigenous in origin. Evolutionary development of the anthers in the genus is related to pollination systems and the development of secondary pollen presentation from the upper style in some groups. Anther glands may have originally had a protective function for the sporogenous tissue. However in different groups the function has changed or the gland has disappeared. In some species in ...

A reliable quantitative structure retention relationship (QSRR) study has been evaluated to predict the retention indices (RIs) of a broad spectrum of compounds, namely 118 non-linear, cyclic and heterocyclic terpenoids (both saturated and unsaturated), on an HP-5MS fused silica column. A principal component analysis showed that seven compounds lay outside of the main cluster. After elimination of the outliers, the data set was divided into training and test sets involving 80 and 28 compounds. The method was tested by application of the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method to find the most effective molecular descriptors, followed by multiple linear regressions (MLR). The PSO-MLR model was further confirmed through “leave one out cross validation†(LOO-CV) and “leave group out cross validation†(LGO-CV), as well as external validations. The promising statistical figures of merit associated with the proposed model (R2train=0.936, Q2LOO=0.928, Q2LGO=0.921, F=376.4) confirm its
Camu-camu; Anti-oxidant; Inflammation; Vitamin C; Smoking Summary Background: Oxidative stress as well as inflammation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Although, various anti-oxidative dietary supplements have been evaluated for their ability to prevent atherosclerosis, no effective ones have been determined at present. Camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia) is an Amazonian fruit that offers high vitamin C content. However, its anti-oxidative property has not been evaluated in vivo in humans. Methods: To assess the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties of camucamu in humans, 20 male smoking volunteers, considered to have an accelerated oxidative stress state, were recruited and randomly assigned to take daily 70 ml of 100% camu-camu juice, corresponding to 1050 mg of vitamin C (camu-camu group; n = 10) or 1050 mg of vitamin C tablets (vitamin C group; n = 10) for 7 days. Results: After 7 days, oxidative stress markers such as the levels of urinary ...

Blackburn et al. (2009) suggest that if the relationship between variables is as expected at random, then it is uninteresting. In fact, if extinctions of bird species on islands were as expected at random with respect to species richness it would be fairly easy and accurate to predict the number of extinctions from the size of the original bird fauna, a useful and interesting prediction to say the least. At random, one would expect to see a strong association of the size of the bird fauna and the number of extinctions. This would suggest that a random draw of species from the islands provides an explanation for the number of species that have gone extinct. However, the size of the avifauna has a significantly poor association with the number of extinctions (Karels et al., 2008). This means that something is causing deviation from the random expectation, an interesting result that we suggest may be partly due to heavily impacted islands being large enough to support agriculture, which in turn ...

Of the seventy or so species that have been described in the genus Calytrix, this is the most spectacular. With its vivid, purple petals and conspicuous stamens intensifying from yellow to red, Calytrix leschenaultii makes a vibrant addition to any garden. Calytrix are named for the fine hairs or awns found on the calyx. One common name for members of the genus is fringe myrtle, but no colloquial name for C. leschenaultii has been recorded. C. leschenaultii is an erect shrub which can grow to a metre in height. Its scented leaves are tiny and cling to spindly stems, giving it the classic appearance of an herbaceous member of the Myrtaceae family. Its alternating leaves are tiny, often less than 2mm, sessile, and more or less obtusely ovate. When not in flower, the plant is thus rather unremarkable; in the springtime, however, anywhere from June through to November, C. leschenaultii bursts into a fire of intense violet-coloured blooms. Its fruits are dry, indehiscent and contain a single ...

In this study, the anti-Oxacillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA) activity of extracts from Eugenia pyriformis (leaf and stem), Plinia cauliflora (rind fruit, leaf, and stem), and Heliconia rostrata (flower, rhizome, leaf, and stem) was evaluated. In vitro screening of antibacterial activity of the extracts (extraction with ethanol:water [7:3, v/v]) was performed using both agar diffusion and broth microdilution assays against sixty isolates of ORSA from dental clinic (genotyped by using Multilocus Enzyme Electrophoresis method) and against S. aureus reference strain (ATCC 6538). To evaluate the toxicity of the extracts, the MTT reduction assay was performed. The growth of ORSA genotypes and S. aureus reference strain were inhibited by extracts from E. pyriformis and P. cauliflora. Moreover, the rind fruit from P. cauliflora showed the lowest Minimum Inhibitory Concentration value (6.25 mg/ml) against ORSA. The extracts were most active against S. aureus reference strain than on ORSA ...

The wood anatomy of manuka growing in five different habitats was analysed to establish whether or not different anatomical forms exist. The study involved the use of the light microscope for obtaining vessel and fibre quantitative data such as their length, width, wall thickness, density of vessel elements in a transection and average grouping of vessels. The confocal microscope was used to measure the area of perforation plates of fibriform vessels and wide vessels. The study also involved the use of the scanning electron microscope for determining the presence of cell wall sculpturing in the walls of wide vessels. The data was analysed by univariate analysis to determine any variation of wood characters within a population and between populations in the five habitats. The habitats were margins of lowland forests, swamp, sand dune, subalpine and hot thermal soils. The study has established variations within each population in all the cell types. The study showed that plants differed ...

Traditional medicine and ecological cues can both help to reveal bioactive natural compounds. Indigenous Australians have long used kino from trunks of the eucalypt tree, Corymbia citriodora, in traditional medicine. A closely related eucalypt, C. torelliana, produces a fruit resin with antimicrobial properties that is highly attractive to stingless bees. We tested the antimicrobial activity of extracts from kino of C. citriodora, C. torelliana × C. citriodora, and C. torelliana against three Gram-negative and two Gram-positive bacteria and the unicellular fungus, Candida albicans. All extracts were active against all microbes, with the highest activity observed against P. aeruginosa. We tested the activity of seven flavonoids from the kino of C. torelliana against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. All flavonoids were active against P. aeruginosa, and one compound, (+)-(2S)-4′,5,7-trihydroxy-6-methylflavanone, was active against S. aureus. Another compound, 4′,5,7-trihydroxy-6,8-dimethylflavanone,
