Differences in symptom scores at the end of treatment were smaller than those reported in previous studies of music therapy for inpatients (Tang et al, 1994; Hayashi et al, 2002). Multiple factors could be responsible for these differences. First, previous studies provided more intensive interventions and achieved higher levels of attendance at therapy sessions. For instance, Tang and colleagues reported that all patients involved in their trial attended all music therapy sessions. We were keen to examine the effects of music therapy in an acute in-patient setting. The length of in-patient stay has decreased in most mental health units over recent years (National Statistics, 2004), and in the present study the majority of participants had left the in-patient unit before the end of therapy. As a result of this, a third of those randomised to music therapy had fewer than the four sessions we aimed to deliver to them. Previous studies have examined the impact of music therapy among people with ...

Introduction. Long term music therapy for people with intellectual disabilities and the NDIS. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the effects of music therapy on comfort in acute mechanically ventilated patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Mechanical ventilation leads to decreased comfort. Pain and anxiety may increase during this treatment modality, and the literature suggests this may directly affect patient comfort levels. The convenience sample consisted of 2 men and 3 women who were mechanically ventilated and fit the selection criteria. Dependent variables measured included comfort, pain, and anxiety. Physiologic dependent measures included heart rate, respiratory rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure collected at timed intervals. Comfort was measured using a modified version of the Hospice Comfort ...

Despite a well-established framework of practical applications, evidence of the efficacy of music therapy in dementia care is inconsistent. This project tested a new evaluation protocol to look at clients participation in music therapy from the standpoint of engagement rather than cognitive abilities and behaviour. The first stage involved the development of a new scale of musical engagement to assess the clients engagement as a function of creativity, duration, energy, and assertiveness. In the second stage 12 elderly clients with dementia participated in 20 weekly music therapy sessions to identify potential relationships between participants level of musical engagement and their self-assessed quality of life. Results: While relationships between the variables were not statistically significant, there was an indication that increases in self-assessed quality of life may have been related to a decrease and/or stability in the level of musical engagement. Results also showed that the level of ...

Armed with this growing knowledge, doctors and researchers are employing music to retrain the injured brain. Studies by the authors and other researchers have revealed that because music and motor control share circuits, music can improve movement in patients who have suffered a stroke or who have Parkinsons disease. Research has shown that neurologic music therapy can also help patients with language or cognitive difficulties, and the authors suggest that these techniques should become part of rehabilitative care. Future findings may well indicate that music should be included on the list of therapies for a host of other disorders as well. The role of music in therapy has gone through some dramatic shifts in the past 15 years, driven by new insights from research into music and ...
On admission to rescue and rehoming centres dogs are faced with a variety of short- and long-term stressors including novelty, spatial/social restriction and increased noise levels. Animate and inanimate environmental enrichment techniques have been employed within the kennel environment in an attempt to minimise stress experienced by dogs. Previous studies have shown the potential physiological and psychological benefits of auditory stimulation, particularly classical music, within the kennel environment. This study determined the physiological/psychological changes that occur when kennelled dogs are exposed to long-term (7 days) auditory stimulation in the form of classical music through assessment of effects on heart rate variability (HRV), salivary cortisol and behaviour. The study utilised a cross over design in which two groups were exposed to two consecutive 7 day treatments; silence (control) and classical music (test). Group A was studied under silent conditions followed by 7 days of ...
In an early scene in The Tree of Life, the new movie by Terrence Malick, an authoritarian patriarch played by Brad Pitt disrupts a family dinner to instruct his three young sons in the appreciation of classical music.. Before their inexpressive faces, he brandishes an album cover of Brahms Fourth Symphony, performed by the NBC Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Pitts character rather obnoxiously conducts along to the recording, which has been playing throughout the meal, and exhorts his boys to open their ears to Brahms majestic chords.. Classical music clearly plays an important role in this 1950s suburban Texas household, as it does in The Tree of Life.. In each of his five feature films to date, Malick has used classical music as his principal soundtrack. The Tree of Life features selections and snippets from more than 30 individual pieces -- including works by Brahms, Mahler, Bach, Górecki and Holst. They are all woven together seamlessly with the help of some ...
For those of you interested in music and the brain, I recommend Daniel Levitins book, This is Your Brain on Music. Levins book is especially interesting because he started his career as a musician. He knows a lot about music and has some interesting stories about songs and musicians. He now teaches and researches at McGill. In his book he talks about the brain, how music is processed, and related MRI research. What was interesting to me is how many parts of the brain are used to process music. Given that music can evoke powerful emotions, I assumed that the amygdala and primitive brain centers would be involved. Surprisingly, listening to music involves anticipation and memory which rely on higher cerebral functions. Many brain centers are used to enjoy music. There is not one localized brain center for music. In a very accessible book, Levin combines his knowledge about music with state of the art neuroscience. Anyone who is interested in music and the brain should definitely read this book. ...
Dementia is the most significant health issue facing our aging population. With no cure to date, there is an urgent need for the development of interventions that can alleviate symptoms of dementia and ensure optimal well-being for people with dementia and their caregivers. There is accumulating evidence that music is a highly effective, non-pharmacological treatment for various symptoms of dementia at all stages of disease progression. In its various forms, music (as a medium for formal therapy or an informal activity) engages widespread brain regions, and in doing so, can promote numerous benefits, including triggering memories, enhancing relationships, affirming a sense of self, facilitating communication, reducing agitation, and alleviating depression and anxiety. This book outlines the current research and understanding of the use of music for people with dementia, from internationally renowned experts in music therapy, music psychology, and clinical neuropsychology.
Aim. To evaluate the effect of bed rest with music on relaxation for patients who have undergone heart surgery on postoperative day one.. Background. Music intervention has been evaluated as an appropriate nursing intervention to reduce patients pain, stress and anxiety levels in several clinical settings, but its effectiveness in increasing patients subjective and objective relaxation levels has not been examined.. Design. A randomised controlled trial.. Method. Forty patients undergoing open coronary artery bypass grafting and/or aortic valve replacement surgery were randomly allocated to either music listening during bed rest (n = 20) or bed rest only (n = 20). Relaxation was assessed during bed rest the day after surgery by determining the plasma oxytocin, heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure, PaO2, SaO2 and subjective relaxation levels.. Results. In the music group, levels of oxytocin increased significantly in contrast to the control group for which the trend over time was negative ...
Ronit Azoulay, flautist: The flute is to work with her breathing. Im breathing as I play the flute. Im noticing her breathing rate and matching it with maybe one or two note phrases, maybe longer. She is on a respirator. One of the things that can be a struggle on a respirator is that it can be uncomfortable. So were both looking to influence the rhythms but also the relaxation in the body.. Research has demonstrated that we entrained to sounds outside of us and rhythms. The word entrainment is from physics originally, and in this context it means is that we synchronize with external rhythms in music.. Doctor at Beth Israel: We wanted to study whether or not music therapy would impact on quality of life, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation. The challenge of having chronic lung disease very much has to do with breathing and breathing correctly and training people to breathe as well as possible. When engaged in that effort one can see better oxygen levels, less shortness of breath.. Ronit ...

This bilateral overlap has applications to therapy as well as language instruction. The effect of music on memory is highly complex, with different types of musical memory engaging unique representations of neural correlates. Musical memory is not represented symmetrically across the brain. Studies have shown that there is a significant amount of lateralization, with asymmetrical specialization, in processing specific elements of musical stimuli. Not only are there distinctive brain regions responsible for memory types, but different brain regions are also responsible for characterizing diverse types of music such as lyrical and non-lyrical (instrumental). Music has also been empirically shown to affect human emotions and higher cognitive processes. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that listening to music strongly activates the limbic and paralimbic emotional areas of the brain, as well as the nucleus accumbens which is involved in motivation and reward processing ...

Worldwide, the leading cause of death is ischemic heart disease. Other than medical and surgical management, alternative therapy such as relaxing music has been identified as having an impact on reducing morbidity in ischemic heart disease. Although several studies have been conducted to find out the impact of music on pain, anxiety, heart rate and stress in myocardial ischaemia, literature on the long term impact of music on severity of symptoms associated with stable angina is very sparse. Therefore, the whole purpose of this study was to determine the long term effects of Indian music on severity of symptoms in patients with stable angina. Methodology: A single blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on 60 patients of 45 to 65 years of age with stable angina. Intervention group (n = 30) listened to a music based on Indian classical system at home twice a day complementary to their regular treatment for a period of one month. Control group (n = 30) was only on their usual treatment. Both groups
Labor pain is often severe, and analgesic medication may not be indicated. In this randomized controlled trial we examined the effects of music on sensation and distress of pain in Thai primiparous women during the active phase of labor. The gate control theory of pain was the theoretical framework for this study. Randomization with a computerized minimization program was used to assign women to a music group (n = 55) or a control group (n = 55). Women in the intervention group listened to soft music without lyrics for 3 hours starting early in the active phase of labor. Dual visual analog scales were used to measure sensation and distress of pain before starting the study and at three hourly posttests. While controlling for pretest scores, one-way repeated measures analysis of covariance indicated that those in the music group had significantly less sensation and distress of pain than did the control group (F (1, 107) = 18.69, p | .001, effect size =.15, and F (1, 107) = 14.87, p | .001, effect size =
The Royal Childrens Hospital Speech Pathology Department (RCH SPD) provides services to children with Cleft Palate (CP) and velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) in a geographical region that is more than twice the size of Texas, with 30% of the children residing in regional areas. The geographical distribution of the population means that many families are unable to access local speech therapy. To address this problem, the RCH SPD and Music Therapy departments (MTD) collaborated to create a clinical resource for regional children and families. The package is intended to facilitate an increase in childrens consonant inventory, frequency of vocalizations, vocabulary, and communicative opportunity and increase oral airflow during speech. It is also intended to facilitate family-centered care and increase the parent and childs motivation to participate in speech therapy activities within the home environment. The clinical resource has now been distributed to 70 children with cleft palate in ...
On the death of Jutta, Hildegard was elected abbess, but she later built her own convent in Rupertsberg, near Bingen. While head of that community, she continued to write with the assistance of Volmar and also traveled, preached, and corresponded with popes, emperors and kings. She transcribed her own music, whose beauty, mystical qualities, and unexpected use of wide intervals has been compared to a Gothic cathedral. Hildegards conception of music, that it was a means for rising up to God, was analogous to that of Sufism, a tradition remote from her experience. Hildegard is considered the mother of music therapy because she praised the curative properties of music. Her death at the age of 81 years came after a long life that did not lack conflicts with authority, in which she prevailed because she was both shrewd and greatly respected. She nonetheless always declared herself a poor, weak creature and humble servant of God. Official recognition came only much later, when Pope Benedict XVI ...
