Abnormal loading of the knee joint contributes to the pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis. Gait retraining is a noninvasive intervention that aims to reduce knee loads by providing audible, visual, or haptic feedback of gait parameters. The computational expense of joint contact force prediction has limited real-time feedback to surrogate measures of the contact force, such as the knee adduction moment. We developed a method to predict knee joint contact forces using motion analysis and a statistical regression model that can be implemented in near real-time. Gait waveform variables were deconstructed using principal component analysis, and a linear regression was used to predict the principal component scores of the contact force waveforms. Knee joint contact force waveforms were reconstructed using the predicted scores. We tested our method using a heterogenous population of asymptomatic controls and subjects with knee osteoarthritis. The reconstructed contact force waveforms had mean (SD) ...
One of the challenging tasks in systems biology is to understand how molecular networks give rise to emergent functionality and whether universal design principles apply to molecular networks. To achieve this, the biophysical, evolutionary and physiological constraints that act on those networks need to be identified in addition to the characterisation of the molecular components and interactions. Then, the cellular
Through the competition, I hope that we as a research community will be a little more critical of ourselves-in a good way-so that we can really gain confidence in what were predicting and our models can become much more useful clinically," says B.J. Fregly, PhD, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Florida. He and Darryl DLima, MD, PhD at Scripps Clinic are principal investigators of the grand challenge grant.. Each fall, the competition organizers make available a comprehensive data set for one subject who has received an instrumented, force-measuring knee implant. The data includes pre-surgery MRI and CT data, surface marker trajectory data, electromyography signals, and dynamic x-ray images of knee motion, just to list a few. But the competitions participants are not given the in vivo contact force measurements. These they must predict and submit to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the competition organizers. Presentations and ...
This thesis is concerned with the observation that coregulation patterns in gene expression data often reflect functional structures of the cell. First, simulated gene expression data and expression data from yeast experiments are studied with independent component analysis (ICA) and with related factor models. Then, in a more theoretical approach, relations between gene expression patterns and the biological function of the genes are derived from an optimality principle. Linear factor models such as ICA decompose gene expression matrices into statistical components. The coefficients with respect to the components can be interpreted as profiles of hidden variables (called "expression modes") that assume different values in the different samples. In contrast to clusterings, such factor models account for a superposition of effects and for individual responses of the different genes: each gene profile consists of a superposition of the expression modes, which thereby account for the common ...
There are receptor connections between the outside and inside of the cell, linking to signaling pathways that convey mechanical stimuli information to the nucleus.1 Receptors are able to convert mechanical energy into chemical stimuli that can be conducted inside the cell. Past soft tissue articles in this journal have given evidence of pressure on tendons causing a proliferation of fibroblasts and initiation of an inflammatory cascade, resulting in the laying down of new collagen along the normal lines of stress. An often-overlooked benefit of soft tissue loading is the piezoelectric effect. The Curie brothers discovered the piezoelectric effect in crystals in 1880. Piezoelectricity literally means, "pressure electricity." Crystalline arrangements are the rule in living tissue,2 not the exception. These crystals are piezoelectric, meaning they generate electric fields when compressed or stretched. When a bone or cartilage is compressed, or a tendon or ligament stretched, or when skin is ...
As a result of this and other research, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has had a ruling in place since 2000, which is still current as of 2015, stating that, "Research indicates that patients with impaired kidney function, including premature neonates, who receive parenteral levels of aluminum at greater than 4 to 5 [microg/kg/day] accumulate aluminum at levels associated with central nervous system and bone toxicity. Tissue loading may occur at even lower rates of administration" (my emphasis ...

VIDip Public Health. Limpopo Department of Health and Social Development, Polokwane, Limpopo To the Editor: Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) have been used for the diagnosis of malaria in Limpopo Province since 2001. A key determinant of the effectiveness of malaria RDTs is end-user proficiency. Since this had not previously been assessed in the area, we undertook a cross-sectional survey among randomly selected end-users of RDTs at primary health care settings in January 2007. Only 9% of participants checked the expiry date of RDTs, 32% did not add the correct volume of buffer, 24% did not wait for at least 15 minutes before reading the test result, and 24% were unable to read the test correctly. The percentage of participants who correctly interpreted RDT positive results was 85% (177/200), and the percentage who correctly interpreted RDT negative results was 96% (24/25). To achieve the full potential of RDTs as a tool for diagnosis of malaria, end-user proficiency must be improved. ...
Seahorses are used in the treatment of a wide range of health problems under the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is a complementary and alternative system of medicine (CAM). You can refer to my article - "The Basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)" to learn the fundamentals of TCM. Seahorses are employed in the treatment of sexual weakness, reduced sexual desire or drive (reduced libido; libido means sexual desire or sex drive), and are considered as broad-spectrum or general tonics. The practitioners of TCM claim that seahorses strengthen "kidneys" and improve "nerves", which in the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine points to general morale, well-being, and vigor. "kidneys" also imply sexual function in the context of TCM. Seahorses are categorized under sweet, salty, and warm medicines. They are usually not prescribed alone but in combo-preparations (formulations containing multiple ingredients) containing matter from other animals and plants.. Continue reading → ...
Seahorses are a fascinating species to observe. I took my nephew to the National Aquarium in DC this past weekend and we were memorized by the aquatic centaurian-like bony fish (pictured right). Ive written about seahorses in the past, and from the traffic of that post I can tell that a seahorse post is much appreciated by the BCS readers, so I thought Id take a some time to delve into more of their hallmark traits.. Here are 5 more fun facts about seahorses to add to the list (written almost 3 years ago!). Please feel free to comment below or email [email protected] if you have something youd love to share about seahorses!. ...

[more ▼]. Reasons for performing study: Whereas the effect of heel configuration on the tension of the suspensory apparatus is well documented in the literature, there are few reports of joint contact force components in the equine distal forelimb. Objectives: To improve understanding of the effect of heel configuration on equine digit joint loading, a sensitivity analysis was performed to compare the effect of a raised heel on joint contact force components in the coffin and fetlock joints during the stance phase of the trot. Materials and methods: FourWarmblood horses were used. An inverse dynamic analysis was carried out using kinematic and kinetic data. Taking into account the tendon wrapping forces (WF) around the sesamoid bones in the ...
Indigenous foods contain phytochemicals that are linked to protection against the development of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension. Some of these indigenous foods have been chemically analysed and contain active compounds such as organic sulphur, hypoglycaemic alkaloids, flavonoids, phytosterin glycosides and polyacetylenes. The article is based on an explanatory study that was carried out to determine the consumption of indigenous fruit and vegetables, and health risk in rural subjects. Subjects were selected from twenty-four (24) villages in the five former districts of Limpopo Province (South Africa). In Phase One, dietary consumption of the indigenous fruit and vegetables was collected from 703 subjects and health risk and presence of other chronic diseases of lifestyle were determined in the subjects. The study was done during 2002-2005. Phase Two is underway where the identified foods are being analysed for phytochemical composition. Sixteen indigenous vegetables were ...

During mating, female syngnathids transfer eggs to specialized morphological structures that are located on ...
The Natural History and Captive Care of Native Seahorses - The Atlantic (Northern or Lined) Seahorse, Hippocampus erectus from the marine biologists and aquatics experts at That Fish Place - That Pet Place and ThatPetPlace.com.
Seahorses are marine fishes and they belong to the family Syngnathidae. Their look and behaviour is much different in comparison to the other fishes. Fishes that belong to the order Syngnathiformes are special because only the mail becomes pregnant. Male cares the eggs in his brood pouch. Today, we recognise 49 species of seahorses, but probably this is not the final number. Seahorses are threatened by overexploitation for tradicional medicines, aquarium fishes and souvenirs. Also, many human activites are degrading and destroying their habitats. Seahorses are vulnerable to overexploitation because of their behaviour and ecology. These fishes are important predators on benthic organisms, so removing them may well disrupt ecosystems. All seahorse species are listed in CITES Appendix II and IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Listing in Appendix II is intended to ensure that future use of the species is undertaken in a sustainable manner ...

Musculoskeletal tissues respond to optimal mechanical signals (e.g., strains) through anabolic adaptations, while mechanical signals above and below optimal levels cause tissue catabolism. If an individuals physical behaviour could be altered to generate optimal mechanical signalling to musculoskeletal tissues, then targeted strengthening and/or repair would be possible. We propose new bioinspired technologies to provide real-time biofeedback of relevant mechanical signals to guide training and rehabilitation. In this review we provide a description of how wearable devices may be used in conjunction with computational rigid-body and continuum models of musculoskeletal tissues to produce real-time estimates of localised tissue stresses and strains. It is proposed that these bioinspired technologies will facilitate a new approach to physical training that promotes tissue strengthening and/or repair through optimal tissue loading.
Standing with the good posture looks and feels fantastic, plus its very healthy for your joints, muscles, bones, blood circulation and most importantly, your self-esteem. Thats why proud and confident people stand tall with excellent posture. Its a habit! How you hold your body in space is your posture. Your posture is a direct result of the postural habits that you commonly exhibit. You can choose to hold good posture or poor posture. Gravity is your worst enemy while standing or sitting. You could also refer to this as your spinal posture, back or neck posture. The good news for you is that you can quite easily change your postural habits and train your body to sit, stand, walk, and even rest in great postures. Good posture also places the least strain upon your supporting muscles and ligaments. But, no one posture is good to maintain all day. As a human, you were designed to move from posture to posture to avoid muscle fatigue and abnormal sustained tissue loading. This means that your ...
Dear Leah:. You are right and the guys from the store are wrong. The type of scratching you describe is a clear indication that your dwarf seahorses have some sort of external parasites (ectoparasites).. You can provide them with some immediate relief by giving the seahorses a quick freshwater dip, Leah, as explained below in more detail:. Freshwater Dips. A freshwater dip is simply immersing your seahorse in pure, detoxified freshwater thats been preadjusted to the same temp and pH as the water the seahorse is accustomed to, for a period of at least 10 minutes (Giwojna, Dec. 2003). It doesnt harm them - seahorses typically tolerate freshwater dips exceptionally well and a 10-minute dip should be perfectly safe. Freshwater dips are effective because marine fish tolerate the immersion in freshwater far better than the external parasites they play host to; the change in osmotic pressure kills or incapacitates such microorganisms within 7-8 minutes (Giwojna, Dec. 2003). A minimum dip, if the fish ...

Some of the initiates at the school, which was being run by a 25-year-old man, appeared to be minors, Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders chairperson Malesela Dikgale said. He was apprehended on Wednesday evening after local leaders and residents raised the alarm about the school in Ramotshenyadi village.. This brought to 16 the number of illegal schools shut down in the province since the beginning of the initiation season. Dikgale said the initiates were all in good health. "We dont want this kind of a thing in our communities," he said. One parent said her 12-year-old son went there without her permission. She was worried about him after she heard the principal did not have a permit to operate.. "I heard from others that my 11-year-old son was tricked into going there by people who earned commission each time they took kids there," said another parent. "If children want to go to these schools, they must do so willingly. I dont support how my child was forced." A third parent said: "I am a ...

What kind of an animal is a sea horse? Is it a mammal, like the horse and monkey are? Or is it a reptile, like the chameleon is? No, it is neither of these. The sea horse is a fish. It is a member of the pipefish family. Most pipefishes are long, thin creatures, shaped like pipes. Sea horses have many of the features of pipefish. Their bodies are ringed by ridges of bone. Their mouths are tiny openings at the end of tube-shaped snouts. They have fewer fins than most other kinds of fish. The fin on the back - the dorsal fin - is used for swimming. And they have a strange way of producing young ...
On July 3rd 2015, our paper came out in Science Magazine, dealing with the fact that seahorses have square tails. The work, lead by Michael Porter of Clemson University, allowed us to test the hypothesis whether square tails in seahorses (and its allies within the Syngnathidae) has a mechanical advantage that could be linked to tail grasping. Using 3D printed models that were subjected to various mechanical testing (including smashing it with a hamer) does indeed confirm that tails that are square in cross section are stronger and more resilient to deformation than tails that are round.. Bob Fenner,. Dwarf seahorses and Gorgonians, sys. 8/29/08 Hello Mr. Fenner & crew at WWM! ,And to you Elena, Thank you for taking my question. Ive read your website (among many others) and there is so much information that is contradictory it makes me cry! ,How would you help here?, Your site opened my eyes to so much & I try to learn something new every day to help keep my tanks and inhabitants be as healthy & happy as possible but my dwarf seahorse tank needs help!!! My first mistake with the dwarfs was to only read seahorse sites. I didnt get to your site until after the fact. Im having trouble picking the correct hitching posts for my dwarfs. The gorgonians I chose, I fear, were a tremendous mistake; as was the red tree sponge that I was told was GREAT for seahorses!. Natural History This slender seahorse grows to about seven inches long. Males are often bright orange and the females yellow; both may be covered in brown or white spots, and may turn pink or white during courtship. They are found in coral reefs and sea grass beds and occasionally in the midwater of the Atlantic from North Carolina to Florida, and from the Caribbean down to Brazil. Males can carry broods of up to 1,000 young in their pouches, with larger males carrying even more young. Conservation Of the thousands of longsnouts born in each brood, only one or two may live to become adults and raise broods of their own. In the past, thats been enough to keep their populations healthy. But today, collectors take tons to dry and sell as souvenirs. The more that are taken, the fewer that are left to reproduce-putting longsnout populations in danger. Cool Facts As with other seahorses, when longsnout seahorses mate, the female deposits her eggs into a special pouch on the males belly. The pouch seals

Seahorses, which are a type of fish, are too comely and graceful to fail to fascinate and arouse the inquisitive nature of any human being. They are one of the most awe-inspiring creations of the Nature. Seahorses are named so because they are marine in their habitat and have a horse-like head. Animal-analogy does not end here, as the biologists often describe seahorses as having monkey-like prehensile tail, kangaroo-like pouch, and chameleon-like eyes. In the Chinese language, a seahorse is known as Hai Ma (Haima). Seahorses high level of exploitatation in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has become a grave issue of international interests. The use of seahorses in TCM is discissed here - Seahorses in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ...
Introduction HIV and AIDS continue to be one of the most challenging developmental issues in human history. In the early days of the epidemic, HIV was seen as a disease striking mainly men. Today, women account for nearly half of the 39.5 million people living with HIV worldwide. Of the 3.8 million new HIV infections that occurred among adults worldwide in 2006, 50 per cent were among women. In sub-Saharan Africa where HIV transmission is predominantly heterosexual, almost 60 percent of those infected are women. This dramatic rise in HIV prevalence among women is due to gender inequality and blatant human rights violations (Banerjee & Shama, 2007). Sub-Saharan Africa is the region worst-affected by HIV and AIDS. HIV/AIDS in South Africa is a prominent health concern; South Africa has the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS compared to any other country in the world with 5,6 million people living with HIV, and 270,000 HIV related deaths recorded in 2011(WHO 2011). Structural factors influencing
