Isometric rate of torque development examines how quickly force can be exerted and may resemble everyday task demands more closely than isometric strength. Rate of torque development may provide further insight into the relationship between muscle function and gait following stroke. Aims of this study were to examine the test-retest reliability of hand-held dynamometry to measure isometric rate of torque development following stroke, to examine associations between strength and rate of torque development, and to compare the relationships of strength and rate of torque development to gait velocity. Sixty-three post-stroke adults participated (60 years, 34 male). Gait velocity was assessed using the fast-paced 10 m walk test. Isometric strength and rate of torque development of seven lower-limb muscle groups were assessed with hand-held dynamometry. Intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated for reliability and Spearmans rho correlations were calculated for associations. Regression ...
Question: Is progressive resistance training as effective as aerobic training of similar duration in sedentary older adults with diabetes mellitus? Design: A randomised trial with concealed allocation, assessor blinding and intention-to-treat analysis. Participants: Sixty people with Type 2 diabetes mellitus with glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) between 8% and 10% in the past month. Intervention: One group undertook progressive resistance exercise and the other group undertook aerobic exercise. Both groups completed 18 sessions over 8 weeks. In each session, the progressive resistance exercise group did nine resistive exercises while the aerobic exercise group did 50 minutes of aerobic exercise. Outcome measures: HbA1c, blood glucose, lipid profile (total, high- and low-density cholesterol and triglycerides), weight, body mass index, body fat, waist circumference, waist:hip ratio, blood pressure, and peak oxygen consumption. Results: Forty-nine (82%) participants completed the intervention. ...
Exercise therapy is a core component of rehabilitation after burn injury, however, there are limitations to our knowledge of best practice. Resistance training (RT) may have some benefit for improving muscle strength after burn injury, though the quality of evidence for this is low.. To determine if a high load RT program is feasible and whether the addition of early RT to routine physiotherapy improves muscle strength and self-report physical function after burn injury.. Allocation to a resistance training group (RTG) or control group (CG) was randomised. The RTG performed a 4-week RT program commencing within 72 hours of injury in addition to usual rehabilitation. Maximal isometric muscle strength and self-report functional surveys for upper and lower limb were assessed at 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after enrolment. Muscle strength results were analysed using a mixed effects linear regression and negative binomial regression was used for physical function. Adjustment for covariables and ...
J. Sternhagen, F. Akram, & B. Bowser, PhD. South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD Research in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) suggests lower extremity asymmetry can negatively influence gait and balance which may lead to increased risk of falls. It is likely that leg strength asymmetry contributes to these negative effects. Currently there is limited research examining leg strength asymmetries in persons with MS. Purpose: To quantify lower extremity strength asymmetry during isometric and isokinetic knee extensor (KE) movements for people with MS. Methods: Leg strength was assessed bilaterally in 6 participants with MS (Expanded Disability Status Scale = 4.25± 2.36, Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29 = 69.83±36). A Biodex dynamometer was used to bilaterally measure peak isometric KE torque at 90° and peak isokinetic KE torque at 30°/s, 60°/s, 90°/s, and 180°/s. Testing used a double baseline in which 3 trials were taken at each speed and position on two separate visits within a one-week period.

The age-related decline in functional capability is preceded by a reduction in muscle quality. The purpose of this study was to assess the combined effects of progressive resistance training (PRT) and protein supplementation beyond habitual intakes on upper leg lean tissue mass (LTM), muscle quality and functional capability in healthy 50-70 years women. In a single-blinded, randomized, controlled design, 57 healthy older women (age 61.1 ± 5.1 years, 1.61 ± 0.65 m, 65.3 ± 15.3 kg) consumed 0.33 g/kg body mass of a milk-based protein matrix (PRO) for 12 weeks. Of the 57 women, 29 also engaged in a PRT intervention (PRO + PRT). In comparison to the PRO group (n = 28), those in the PRO + PRT group had an increase in upper leg LTM [0.04 (95% CI -0.07 to 0.01) kg vs. 0.13 (95% CI 0.08-0.18) kg, P = 0.027], as measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry; an increase in knee extensor (KE) torque [-1.6 (95% CI -7.3 to 4.4 N m) vs. 10.2 (95% CI 4.3-15.8 N m), P = 0.007], as measured from a maximal ...
The number of repetitions performed to fatigue is an important consideration in designing a strength training programme. The greatest strength gains appear to result from working with 4-6RM. Increasing this to 12-20RM favours the increase in muscle endurance and mass.. One set of 4-6RM performed 3 days a week is a typical strength training programme. The optimal number of sets of an exercise to develop muscle strength remains controversial. In a number of studies comparing multiple set programmes to produce greater strength gains than a single set, the majority of studies indicate that there is not a significant difference.. Handling heavy weights in the pursuit of strength will require a recovery of 3-5 minutes between sets, but only minimum recovery should be taken if strength endurance is the aim. The majority of athletic events are fast and dynamic, and therefore this quality must be reflected in the athletes strength work. Muscular strength is primarily developed when 8RM or less is used ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - The effects of breakdown set resistance training on strength and body composition in young males and females. AU - Fisher, James. AU - Carlson, Luke. AU - Steele, James. PY - 2016. Y1 - 2016. N2 - Breakdown (BD) training has been advocated by multiple commercial and academic publications and authors, seemingly as a result of the acute hormonal and muscle activation responses it produces. However, there is a relative dearth of research that has empirically considered this advanced method of resistance training (RT) over a chronic intervention while appropriately controlling other RT variables. The present study considered 36 male and female participants divided into 3 groups: BD (n = 11), heavy-load breakdown (n = 14), and traditional (n = 11), performing full-body RT programs 2 times per week for 12 weeks. No significant between-group differences were identified for change in absolute muscular endurance for chest press, leg press, or pull-down exercises or for body composition ...
Abstract. This work explored the short-term effect of whole body vibration (WBV) training on anthropometry, body composition and muscular strength in obese women. Fifty obese women (age=46.8±7.81[SD]y; BMI=35.1±3.55kg/m2) were assigned to a ten-week WBV training period, two times a week (in each session, 14min vibration training, 5min rest; vibration amplitude 2.0-5.0mm, frequency 40-60Hz), with (n=18) or without (n=17) radiofrequency, or to a non-exercise control group (n=15). Subjects were instructed not to change their habitual lifestyle. Before and after the ten-week experimental period, anthropometric measurements, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and the leg press, leg curl and leg extension strength tests were carried out. All changes in the two groups of WBV training, with or without radiofrequency, were similar and these groups were combined in a single WBV intervention group. As compared to controls, subjects submitted to WBV training had significantly lower BMI, total body ...

We examined the effects of progressive resistance training (PRT) and supplementation with calcium-vitamin D3 fortified milk on markers of systemic inflammation, and the relationship between inflammation and changes in muscle mass, size and strength. Healthy men aged 50-79 years (n = 180) participated in this 18-month randomized controlled trial that comprised a factorial 2 × 2 design. Participants were randomized to (1) PRT + fortified milk supplement, (2) PRT, (3) fortified milk supplement, or (4) a control group. Participants assigned to PRT trained 3 days per week, while those in the supplement groups consumed 400 ml day−1 of milk containing 1,000 mg calcium plus 800 IU vitamin D3. We collected venous blood samples at baseline, 12 and 18 months to measure the serum concentrations of IL-6, TNF-α and hs-CRP. There were no exercise × supplement interactions, but serum IL-6 was 29% lower (95% CI, −62, 0) in the PRT group compared with the control group after 12 months. Conversely, IL-6 was 31%

The aim of this study was to analyze the association between muscle quality index (MQI) and phase angle (PhA) after a program of progressive resistance training (RT) in older women. Sixty-six older women with previous RT experience (68.8 ± 4.6 years, 156.6 ± 5.3 cm, 66.0 ± 13.0 kg, and 26.7 ± 4.6 kg/m2) underwent 12 weeks of RT (3 ×/week, eight exercises, and 10-15 repetition maximum). Anthropometry, muscular strength (one-repetition maximum tests), and body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and spectral bioimpedance) were measured pre- and posttraining. There were observed significant increases for PhA, MQI, muscular strength, muscle mass, and reactance, whereas no significant changes in body fat and resistance were found. A significant correlation was observed between the RT-induced relative changes in PhA and MQI (r = .620). We conclude that improvements in MQI induced by RT are associated with increases in PhA. Therefore, PhA may be a valid tool to track changes in MQI after ...

OBJECTIVES: Short-term whole-body vibration training (WBVT) has emerged as an exercise method for improving neuromuscular performance and has been proposed for injury prevention and rehabilitation. This study investigated the effects of a short-term (,/=2 months) WBVT program using a side-to-side vibration on: (i) strength profile of knee extensors (KE) and flexors (KF), (ii) functional hamstrings-to-quadriceps ratio (ECC(KF)/CON(KE)), (iii) flexibility and (iv) vertical jumping performance (VJ). Furthermore, we explored the retention of performance gains 21 days following WBVT. DESIGN: Randomized-controlled trial. METHODS: Twenty-six moderately active females (20.40+/-0.27 years) were assigned to a vibration (VG) or a control group (CG). The short-term WBVT program consisted of sixteen-sessions on a side-to-side vibration platform (frequency: 25Hz, amplitude: 6mm, 2 setsx5min). Isokinetic and isometric peak torque of KE and KF, ECC(KF)/CON(KE), flexibility, and VJ were measured pre, 2 days ...
The first week of the conventional resistance exercise program also consisted of two 20-minute training. The subsequent 7 weeks consisted of two 30-minute training per week. In this program, participants performed a general leg press that focused on the quadriceps. This training program also included 5-10 minutes of warm-up and 5 minutes of cool down. The intensity of the conventional resistance training was customized to each participant using 50% of the estimated one-rep max (1RM) with an EN-Dynamic Seated Leg Press (Enraf-Nonius) (Fig. 3). All participants were encouraged to perform as many leg press repetitions as possible until they could no longer press or failed to complete another full range of motion. Participants performed knee resistance training in a sitting position with the foot placed on the center of the pedal of the EN-Dynamic machine. Participants were asked to fully extend and flex their knee joint from 90° of knee flexion. Each action was rhythmically monitored by the ...

Introduction: The purpose of this study was toestablish the nature and stability of the strength-size relationship for the knee flexors and extensors across a 6-month period of childhood growth. Methods: Nineteen typically developing children aged 5-11 years underwent lower limb magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and dynamometry strength assessments on 2 occasions, 6 months apart. Muscle volume (MV) and maximum anatomical cross-sectional area (aCSA) for the knee flexors and extensors were determined using MRI analysis software. Isokinetic dynamometry determined corresponding isometric and isokinetic strength. Results: Strong correlations were found between muscle size and strength for both the knee flexors and extensors (r ¼ 0.84-0.90; P , 0.01). Furthermore, the ratio of strength to muscle size remained consistent across 6 months of prepubescent growth. Conclusions: Increases in thigh muscle strength were relative to those in muscle size, suggesting that muscle growth may play an important role ...

The purpose of the present study was to compare dynamic muscle strength, functional performance, fatigue, and quality of life in premenopausal systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with low disease activity versus matched-healthy controls and to determine the association of dynamic muscle strength with fatigue, functional performance, and quality of life in SLE patients. We evaluated premenopausal (18-45 years) SLE patients with low disease activity (Systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index [SLEDAI]: mean 1.5 ± 1.2). The control (n = 25) and patient (n = 25) groups were matched by age, physical characteristics, and the level of physical activities in daily life (International Physical Activity Questionnaire IPAQ). Both groups had not participated in regular exercise programs for at least six months prior to the study. Dynamic muscle strength was assessed by one-repetition maximum (1-RM) tests. Functional performance was assessed by the Timed Up and Go (TUG), in 30-s test a chair stand
Background: To examine the effects of a community-based resistance training program (Lift for Life (R)) on waist circumference and functional measures in adults with or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Methods: Lift for Life is a research-to-practice initiative designed to disseminate an evidence-based resistance training program for adults with or at risk of developing type 2 diabetes to existing health and fitness facilities in the Australian community. A retrospective assessment was undertaken on 86 participants who had accessed the program within 4 active providers in Melbourne, Australia. The primary goal of this longitudinal study was to assess the effectiveness of a community-based resistance training program, thereby precluding a randomized, controlled study design. Waist circumference, lower body (chair sit-to-stand) and upper body (arm curl test) strength, and agility (timed up-and-go) measures were collected at baseline and repeated at 2 months (n = 86) and again at 6 months (n = 32).
Aim: We aimed to compare functional capacity, respiratory and peripheral muscle strength, and body composition in patients with cystic fibrosis, non-cystic bronchiectasis and healthy controls.. Methods: 43 with bronchiectasis, 36 patients with cystic fibrosis, and 35 age-sex matched controls were included. Body composition was evaluated using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Pulmonary function test was performed. Respiratory muscle strength (MIP and MEP) was evaluated using a mouth pressure device, quadriceps muscle strength using a dynamometer, functional capacity using six-minute walk test (6MWT).. Results: The weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and fat free mass, pulmonary functions, MIP and MEP, quadriceps muscle strength, 6MWT distance, were significantly lower in patients with bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis compared with healthy controls (p,0.05). 24 patients (56%) with bronchiectasis, 23 (64%) patients with cystic fibrosis had malnutrition. 12 (28%) bronchiectasis, 16 (44%) ...
Muscle, motor unit and muscle fibre type-specific differences in force-generating capacity have been investigated for many years, but there is still no consensus regarding specific differences between slow- and fast-twitch muscles, motor units or muscle fibres. This is probably related to a number of different confounding factors disguising the function of the molecular motor protein myosin. We have therefore studied the force-generating capacity of specific myosin isoforms or combination of isoforms extracted from short single human muscle fibre segments in a modified single fibre myosin in vitro motility assay, in which an internal load (actin-binding protein) was added in different concentrations to evaluate the force-generating capacity. The force indices were the x-axis intercept and the slope of the relationship between the fraction of moving filaments and the α-actinin concentration. The force-generating capacity of the β/slow myosin isoform (type I) was weaker (P , 0.05) than the fast ...

SUMMARY: The purpose of the study was to analyze the effect of creatine on measured quadriceps strength and endurance, walking velocity and subjective fatigue, and recovery time in symptomatic post-polio syndrome subjects.. METHOD: Twelve polio survivors were randomly assigned to either the creatine (C) or the placebo (P) group. Seven subjects in the creatine group received 10 grams for 5 days, followed by 5 grams per day of pure creatine. There were 5 subjects in the placebo group. One subject in the creatine group dropped out of the study, with a net of 6 subjects.. The following outcome measures were obtained for each of the subjects at baseline, at 1 week and at 4 weeks: maximum knee extensor (quadriceps) strength, quadriceps recovery time, 6-minute walk distance, fatigue survey results and weight.. RESULTS:. At week one: There was a measurable decrease in knee extensor strength in both the creatine and the placebo group.. At week four: In the creatine group, there was an average increase of ...
Commonly, it is believed that IGF-1, and insulin, are too fragile to be ingested, because, they are destroyed by stomach acids during digestion, and that is why both substances are frequently injected, to avoid its passage through the stomach altogether.. Taking deer antler extract as a spray may also solve the problem of conveying IGF directly to the bloodstream when sprayed under the tongue.. Various scientific tests support deer antler velvets effects on muscle strength. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled experiment, 18 males subjects entered a 10-week strength training program, and it was found out that those who took deer antler velvet showed an increase in strength in the bench press and leg squat, and decrease in body fat relative to the overall placebo group.. In another experiment, 38 males, (all of whom were experienced weightlifters), entered a 10-week strength training program, and those who took deer antler velvet experienced an increase in peak torque and average ...

Love lifting heavy weights in the gym? A new study says that lifting heavy weights may help you enhance your muscle strength more than light weight training as the nervous system facilitates improvements in strength during high-load training.. The study aimed to find out how the brain and motor neurons - cells that send electrical signals to muscle - adapt to high versus low-load weight training.. The findings showed that despite similar increases in muscle thickness, high-load training may be superior for enhancing muscle strength than low-load training.. The nervous system activates more of the motor neurons - or excites them more frequently - when subjected to high-load training.. This increased excitation could account for the greater strength gains despite comparable growth in muscle mass, the researchers said.. If youre trying to increase strength - whether youre a gym rat or an athlete - training with high loads is going to result in greater strength adaptations, said Nathaniel ...
METHODS: Participants were randomized to a low-intensity experimental (LI-E; N.=18) or a high-intensity active control group (HI-C; N.=17). Patients in the LI-E group performed over-ground intermittent walking (weeks 1-8) and muscle power training with portable tools (weeks 5-8); patients in the HI-C group executed treadmill walking (weeks 1-8) and strength training with gym machines (weeks 5-8). Changes in mobility, assessed using the 6-Minute Walking Distance test, were the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included quality of life (Short-Form-36 Questionnaire), gait speed (10-Meter Walking Test), balance (Berg Balance Scale) and muscle performance of the lower limbs (strength and power of the quadriceps and femoral biceps ...

Studies performed in the past 10 years indicate that many mechanically ventilated MICU patients have severe diaphragm weakness [1-5]. Moreover, diaphragm weakness is thought to be associated with poor outcomes in this patient population, with the weakest patients requiring more prolonged mechanical ventilation and having a significantly higher mortality than patients with better diaphragm strength [1, 4]. Because of this evidence, it is speculated that mechanically ventilated patients may benefit from treatment with anabolic agents which increase skeletal muscle strength. In theory, such agents could improve patient outcomes, reducing duration of mechanical ventilation and patient mortality. Several pharmacological agents have been shown to improve skeletal muscle strength in other patient populations (e.g., the elderly, patients with cancer, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD) and it is reasonable to believe that one or more of these agents may also be capable of ...
Method Data on body weight and height, physical fitness, resting heart rate and isometric strength measured at conscription were linked with data on death certificates in men born in 1951-1965 in Sweden (n=809 789). Physical fitness was assessed as a maximal test on an electrically braked bicycle ergometer. Muscle strength was measured as the maximal isometric strength in handgrip, elbow flexion and knee extension in standardised positions, using a dynamometer. Analyses were based on 684 459 (84.5%) men because of missing data. A matched case control study within this sample was performed. The population was followed until 31 December 2006, and 85 men died from ALS during this period. ...

Many studies have examined the role of physical activity on changes in body composition. Because of the association between muscle strength, power, and muscle mass and the well described age-related declines in skeletal muscle mass, we examined the literature on the influence of exercise training interventions, in particular resistance training interventions, on changes in muscle and fat-free mass. Studies that were evaluated included trials conducted in young, middle-aged, and older men and women. Very few studies, if any, examined subgroups of different ethnic populations to evaluate variations in responsiveness. The effects of progressive resistance training in young healthy men and women have been well described (151). As reviewed by Kraemer and colleagues, high-intensity progressive resistance training in young adults results in significant increases in dynamic strength, explosive power, and muscle mass. More recent studies have confirmed these findings. Short-term studies of both lower- ...
The ability of a muscle to shorten and produce force is crucial for locomotion, posture, balance and respiration. During a contraction, myosin heads on the myosin filament propel the actin filament via ATP hydrolysis, resulting in shortening of the muscle and/or force generation. The maximal shortening velocity of a muscle fibre is largely determined by the myosin ATPase activity, while maximal force is primarily determined by the cross-sectional area. Since most muscles are pennate rather than parallel-fibred and work at different lever ratios, muscle architecture and joint-tendon anatomy has to be taken into account to obtain the force and velocity characteristics of a muscle. Additionally, the recruitment of agonistic and antagonistic muscles will contribute to the torque generated during a contraction. Finally, tendon compliance may impact on the rate of force rise and force generated if it is such that the muscle contraction proceeds in the ascending limb of the length-tension relation. ...
The effects of 24 wk of resistance training combined with a healthy diet on lower limb explosive strength capacity were investigated in a population of healthy elderly women. Participants (n = 63; 67.5 ± 0.4 yr) were randomized into three groups; resistance training (RT), resistance training and healthy diet (RT-HD), and control (CON). Progressive resistance training was performed at a load of 75-85% one-repetition maximum. A major adjustment in the healthy dietary approach was an n-6/n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) ratio below 2. Lower limb maximal strength, explosive force capacity during dynamic and isometric movements, whole body lean mass, and physical function were assessed. Whole body lean mass significantly increased by 1.5 ± 0.5% in RT-HD only. Isometric strength performance during knee extension as well as the performance in the five sit-to-stand and single-leg-stance tests increased similarly in RT and RT-HD. Improvements in dynamic peak power and time to reach peak power (i.e ...

Weight training usually refers to exercises done with free weights, barbells, and weight machines. Strength training may include weight training, but also work with resistance cables, core strength exercises such as situps and leg lifts, exercises that use the bodys own weight such as pull-ups and push-ups, and many other types of weight-bearing exercise. Bodybuilding is an extreme form of strength training designed to develop enormous muscles rather than simply increasing overall strength and fitness.. The following articles cover strength training basics such as sets, repetitions, workout frequency, training supplements, and other issues, as well as the health and fitness benefits of strength training. At the bottom of the page are links to websites that provide demonstrations of weight and strength training exercises.. ...
Purpose Patients with cancer frequently experience an involuntary loss of weight (in particular loss of muscle mass), defined as cachexia, with profound implications for independence and quality of life. The rate at which such patients physical performance declines has not been well established. The aim of this study was to determine the change in muscle strength and function over 8 weeks in patients with already established cancer cachexia, to help inform the design and duration of physical activity interventions applicable to this patient group. Methods Patients with thoracic and gastrointestinal cancer and with unintentional weight loss of , 5% in 6 months or BMI , 20 plus 2% weight loss were included. Physical and functional assessments (baseline, 4 weeks, 8 weeks) included isometric quadriceps and hamstring strength, handgrip, standing balance, 10-m walk time and timed up and go. Results Fifty patients (32 male), mean ± SD age 65 ± 10 years and BMI 24.9 ± 4.3 kg/m2, were recruited. ...
Background The neuromuscular decline impact in the functional independence of older women is determining the necessity of implementing new strategies focused on core strength training and postural stability maintenance to promote healthy aging. Objectives To define whether Pilates or resistance training is better at improving (a) core isometric and isokinetic muscular strength, and (b) static and dynamic balance, in older women. Methods This was a cluster randomized controlled trial. Physically independent older women (60-80 years) from day centers were randomly allocated to Pilates, Muscular and Control Groups (PG, MG and CG) using a block randomization method. Only the research staff performing the assessment and statistical analysis were blinded. Exercise groups trained twice a week (1 h per session) for 18 weeks in a moderate-to-vigorous intensity. Core strength (primary outcome): trunk and hip isometric and hip isokinetic muscular strength (Biodex System III Pro Isokinetic Dynamometer), alongside
Recovery of strength is critical for return to sport, and is a known predictor of functional outcomes in post-surgical orthopedic populations. Muscle weakness is a known impairment in patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) but whether improvements in muscle strength after arthroscopy are associated with improved hip function is unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between changes in hip and thigh muscle strength and self-reported function in athletes undergoing arthroscopy for FAIS. Twenty-eight athletes underwent strength testing and completed the Hip Outcome Score Activities of Daily Living (HOS-ADL) and Sports (HOS-S) subscales prior to and six months after surgery. Isokinetic knee extension and flexion strength were measured using a Biodex dynamometer at 60°/s and 300°/s. Isometric hip abduction strength was measured using a custom dynamometer. Changes in strength, limb symmetry, and HOS scores were assessed using paired t-tests. ...

One of the most important things for a reader to understand about the results of a study such as ours is that as we observed many people at the same point in time, we are unable to draw any conclusions regarding causality and can only speculate as to possible explanations for this association. Firstly, the observed associations may be a consequence of damaged lungs leading to reduced exercise capacity and hence resulting in lower muscle bulk, and this is consistent with the observation that skeletal muscle strength is reduced during an acute pulmonary exacerbation of CF. Secondly, lower skeletal muscle may impact on lung function by reducing respiratory muscle strength. Finally, the association may be added to by disease severity, probably via a combination of nutritional malabsorption, chest infections and inflammation.. ...
Aging, even in healthy older adults, is accompanied by a reduction in muscle mass and muscle strength (Gallagher et al., 1997). The gradual loss of muscle strength (below a certain threshold) results in functional impairment. This may result in the need for assistance in the performance of daily activities and an increased risk of falling and non-vertebral fractures (Goodpaster et al., 2006). Therefore, the preservation of muscle strength in older adults is of major importance. Lower extremity function is the use of lower limbs and is imperative for mobility, lower extremity function can be assessed using various practical tests with the patient and is most commonly evaluated via a lower extremity functional scale. A practical non-invasive and cost-effective solution to keeping good lower extremity function is through a basic exercise program (Marsh et al., 2009). Mobility is the key to leading a high quality of life with independence, thus a diminished lower extremity function may result in the ...
Derek M. Hansen. Having used Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) for the last 20 years as both an athlete and coach, I have come to wonder why it hasnt been adopted as a regular training method. Based on my experience, EMS works effectively at improving strength and enhancing recovery. The February 2012 issue of the NSCAs Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research further confirms my beliefs with an article by Girould et al. entitled Dry-Land Strength Training vs. Electrical Stimulation in Sprint Swimming Performance.. The study, undertaken at the University of Poitiers in France, compares the use of EMS with conventional dry-land strength training protocols in the preparation of national level sprint swimmers. A total of 24 swimmers (12 men, 12 women), at an average age of 22 years, were divided into three groups. One group undertook a conventional dry-land strength training program, another group used only EMS and the third group didnt undertake any strength training method. All groups ...
MONDAY, Oct. 24, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Boosting muscle strength may boost brain function in people with mild memory and thinking problems, a new study finds.. The research included 100 people aged 55 to 86. All had mild memory and thinking problems (mild cognitive impairment).. The study volunteers who did weight training twice a week for six months to at least 80 percent of their maximum strength showed significant improvements in mental function.. The benefits lasted for at least a year after their supervised weight-lifting sessions ended, the study showed.. The results were published Oct. 24 in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.. What we found in this follow-up study is that the improvement in cognition [mental] function was related to their muscle strength gains, said study lead author Yorgi Mavros, of the faculty of health sciences at the University of Sydney, Australia.. The stronger people became, the greater the benefit for their brain, Mavros added in a university ...
With weight training, the female sees some remarkable gains in strength initially, even though muscle bulk does not increase. For a muscle to contract, an impulse must be transmitted from the nervous system to the muscle. Each muscle fiber is innervated by a specific motor unit. By overloading a particular muscle, as in weight training, the muscle is forced to work efficiently. Efficiency is achieved by getting more motor units to fine, causing a stronger contraction of the muscle. Consequently, it is not uncommon for a female to see extremely rapid gains in strength when a weight training program is first begun. These tremendous initial strength gains, which can be attributed to improved neuromuscular system efficiency, tend to plateau, and minimum improvement in muscular strength will be realized during a continuing strength - training program, These initial neuromuscular strength gains will also be seen in men, although their strength will continue to increase with appropriate training. ...
