Abstract 234: High Glucose Exacerbates the Lipopolysaccharide-induced Impairment of Nitrergic Relaxation to Electrical Field...
Hypertension (HTN) and diabetes (DM) are comorbid conditions, each associated with inflammation. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is elevated in the serum of patients with DM and capable of robustly activating the immune system. Risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) is increased in both HTN and DM. Vascular relaxation is needed to regulate vascular tone and erectile function. Our previous studies showed that corpus cavernosum (CC) nitrergic relaxation to electrical field stimulation (EFS) was reduced after LPS exposure. It is not known whether LPS-induced inflammation plays a role in DM-associated ED. Our study aim was to examine vascular function of rat CC under high glucose conditions in the presence of LPS. We hypothesized that high glucose would exacerbate the LPS-induced decrease in EFS relaxation. Isolated rat CC strips incubated with control (5mM) or high glucose (HG, 25 mM) media with or without LPS (1 ug/mL) for 6 h. CC strips were mounted in a myograph and pre-contracted with phenylephrine (PE, ...

Canine retinal central arterial strips responded to acetylcholine with a relaxation that was endothelium-independent. Indomethacin and atropine abolished the relaxation at low doses (10(-7) to 10(-6) M) and moderately attenuated the response to high concentrations (10(-5) and 10(-4) M). The residual relaxation at 10(-5) and 10(-4) M in indomethacin-treated strips were abolished by NG-nitro-L-arginine, hexamethonium, oxyhemoglobin and methylene blue, and the NG-nitro-L-arginine-induced inhibition was reversed by L-arginine. Cerebral arterial strips with endothelium responded to acetylcholine with a transient relaxation followed by a contraction, whereas only a relaxation was induced when endothelium was denuded. The relaxations at low and high doses were modified by atropine, indomethacin, hexamethonium and NG-nitro-L-arginine quite similarly to those seen in retinal arteries. Histochemical study demonstrated the presence of perivascular nerves containing NADPH diaphorase in whole mount ...

Force relaxation and permanent deformation processes in erythrocyte membrane were investigated with two techniques: micropipette aspiration of a portion of a flaccid cell, and extension of a whole cell between two micropipettes. In both experiments, at surface extension ratios ,3:1, the extent of residual membrane deformation is negligible when the time of extension is less than several minutes. However, extensions maintained longer result in significant force relaxation and permanent deformation. The magnitude of the permanent deformation is proportional to the total time period of extension and the level of the applied force. Based on these observations, a nonlinear constitutive relation for surface deformation is postulated that serially couples a hyperelastic membrane component to a linear viscous process. In contrast with the viscous dissipation of energy as heat that occurs in rapid extension of a viscoelastic solid, or in plastic flow of a material above yield, the viscous process in this ...

One mechanism that could account for impairment of eNOS-mediated relaxation is decreased availability of NO to produce relaxation, due to scavenging of NO by O2−. Conditions that produce elevated O2− in blood vessels are associated with impaired eNOS-dependent relaxation (21,24,26, 37). For example, impaired endothelium-dependent relaxation in inflammation, atherosclerosis, and diabetes is improved by SOD (5,21,26). In the present study, restoration of endothelium-dependent relaxation by PEG-SOD provides strong evidence that the impairment during diabetes is mediated by O2− in arteries from IL-10−/− mice.. In addition to using PEG-SOD in studies of vasomotor function, we examined relative levels of O2− in the vessel wall using confocal microscopy and hydroethidine. We used this method previously to detect O2− in blood vessels (5,9,26). Findings with hydroethidine staining were consistent with effects of PEG-SOD on function and suggest that O2− levels are higher in blood vessels ...

The functions of nitric oxide-mediated signaling and changes in gene expression during the hypersensitive response | Archivio...
Nitric oxide (NO) is a highly reactive molecule that rapidly diffuses and permeates cell membranes. In animals, NO is implicated in a number of diverse physiological processes, such as neurotransmission, vascular smooth muscle relaxation, and platelet inhibition. It may have beneficial effects, e.g., as a messenger in immune responses, but it is also potentially toxic when the antioxidant system is overwhelmed and reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) accumulate. During the last few years, NO has been detected in several plant species, and an increasing number of reports on its function have implicated NO as an important effector in plant growth, development, and defense. The broad chemistry of NO involves an array of interrelated redox forms with different chemical reactivities and numerous potential biological targets in plants. NO signaling functions depend on its reactivity. ROI are key modulators of NO in triggering cell death, but the nature of the mechanisms by which this occurs in plants ...
Efficacy and Cost Effectiveness of Relaxation and Response to CHF - Tabular View - ClinicalTrials.gov
Background:. Despite the development of significant pharmaceutical treatments, morbidity and mortality of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients remain high, patients quality of life is poor, and their health care utilization is heavy. It is therefore important to find a cost effective non-pharmaceutical treatment to help CHF patients manage the disease. The relaxation response has been found to be effective in managing CHF-related conditions. With its favorable physiological changes, the relaxation response is likely to benefit CHF patients.. Objectives:. 1. To evaluate the effects of a 15-week relaxation response intervention program on improving functional capacity and health-related quality of life as compared with an ongoing 15-week educational program for cardiac disease management, and a control group of usual cardiac care; 2. To identify the costs of conducting the intervention and the cardiac care education and the costs associated with cardiac care services; and to compare cost among ...

multiple components
Abstract: The kappa-distributed fully ionized plasma with collisional interaction is investigated. The Fokker-Planck equation with Rosenbluth potential is employed to describe such a physical system. The results show that the kappa distribution is not a stationary distribution unless the parameter kappa tends to infinity. The general expressions of collisional relaxation rate of multiple-component plasma with kappa distribution are derived and discussed in specific cases in details. For the purpose of visual illustration, we also give those results numerically in figures. All the results show that the parameter kappa plays a significant role in relaxation rate ...

It is rare that a method appears, disappears, and then re-appears again as is the case of tissue characterization based on relaxation time constants. Yet some years later these obsolete methods were dug out again, grants were given to answer questions which had been discarded 25 years earlier [10, 11]. New pulse sequences and algorithms were developed - researchers tried their luck again. Still, there is no easily explainable causality nor any evidence of a straight connection between these numbers and a distinct pathology. There is no unique signature of distinct malignancies or other pathologies in tissue relaxation times, be it in ex vivo or in vivo measurements. Many people believe that numbers (or, more fashionable, data) are the truth but they do not understand how the num-bers were acquired and what they stand for. Nature doesnt care about numbers. Believing in such postulations many years after they have been dismissed is a sign of scientific naiveté.. Whats wrong in relaxation time ...

Abstract 16569: Melatonin Inhibits NO-Induced Activation of BKCa Channels and Relaxation of Coronary Arteries by Increasing...
Alterations in melatonin (MEL) blood levels are associated with several cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure. We recently demonstrated that MEL, acting via MT2-receptors, impairs nitric oxide (NO)-induced relaxation in coronary arteries by inhibiting NO-induced increases in intracellular cGMP levels (JPET 336: 127, 2011). In vascular smooth muscle, PKG1 limits the physiological actions of NO/cGMP signaling by phosphorylating PDE5, thereby increasing PDE5 activity.. Hypothesis: We hypothesized that MEL impairs NO-induced relaxation of coronary arteries by stimulating PKG1-dependent phosphorylation of PDE5, resulting in attenuation of NO-activated BKCa function in coronary smooth muscle cells.. Methods and Results: MEL (10-9 - 10-7 M) inhibited relaxation to the NO-donors (10-10 - 10-4 M), diethylamine-NONOate and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) in isolated porcine coronary arteries (p,0.05; n=5-8), but had no effect on relaxation induced by ...
Abstract 80: Role Of Vascular Beta 2-adrenoceptors In Endotoxemic Shock | Circulation
Although it is known that during endotoxemic shock the use of β-adrenergic agonists can improve organs blood flow independently of cardiac output increase, there is no study in the literature concerning the remodelling of the vascular β-adrenoceptors (β-AR), β1, β2 and β3. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received either 5 mg/kg of lipopolisaccharide (LPS) or the same volume of the vehicle (C) intravenously. Three hours later, the thoracic aorta rings were harvested to perform functional and mRNA expression studies. To take into account the failure of the vascular constriction in sepsis, aortic rings were preconstricted with an appropriate concentration of phenylephrine (α1-adrenergic agonist) in order to obtain 80% of the maximal contraction in both groups. Concentration-relaxation curves were then constructed with several β-AR agonists: isoproterenol (ISO), a non selective agonist; dobutamine (DOBU), salbutamol (SALBU) and SR 58611A (SR) respectively β1-, β2- and β3-AR agonists. Age-related changes in P2-purinergic receptors on vascular smooth muscle and endothelium. | Hypertension
The present study examined age-related changes in the vascular relaxation response to adenine nucleotides in hypertensive and normotensive rats. Aortic ring segments from normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), age 4-6, 9-10, and 13-14 weeks, were examined for relaxation to adenosine 5-triphosphate (ATP). The extent of ATP-induced relaxation in aortic ring segments with intact endothelium was unchanged with advancing age. Rubbed (endothelium-denuded) ring preparations at the age of 4-6 weeks showed a dose-dependent relaxation similar to that of the unrubbed rings. With advancing age, the ATP-induced relaxation in the rubbed rings decreased and was abolished. The relaxation response did not differ between the SHR and WKY animals at any age, whether the preparations were rubbed or unrubbed. The stable ATP analogue beta,r-methylene ATP induced a relaxation response similar to ATP in rubbed rings at 4-6 weeks of age. In addition, treatment with ...
Spin dynamic simulations of solid effect DNP: the role of the relaxation superoperator
Relaxation plays a crucial role in the spin dynamics of dynamic nuclear polarisation. We review here two different strategies that have recently been used to incorporate relaxation in models to predict the spin dynamics of solid effect dynamic nuclear polarisation. A detailed explanation is provided how the Lindblad-Kossakowski form of the master equation can be used to describe relaxation in a spin system. Fluctuations of the spin interactions with the environment as a cause of relaxation are discussed and it is demonstrated how the relaxation superoperator acting in Liouville space on the density operator can be derived in the Lindblad-Kossakowski form by averaging out non-secular terms in an appropriate interaction frame. Furthermore we provide a formalism for the derivation of the relaxation superoperator starting with a choice of a basis set in Hilbert space. We show that the differences in the prediction of the nuclear polarisation dynamics that are found for certain parameter choices ...

Formation and relaxation kinetics of starch-particle complexes
© The Royal Society of Chemistry. The formation and relaxation kinetics of starch-particle complexes were investigated in this study. The combination of cationic nanoparticles in suspension and anionic starch in solution gave rise to aggregate formation which was studied by dynamic light scattering, revealing the initial adsorption of the starch molecules on the particle surface. By examining the stability ratio, W, it was found that even in the most destabilized state, i.e. at charge neutralization, the starch chains had induced steric stabilization to the system. At higher particle and starch concentrations relaxation of the aggregates could be seen, as monitored by a decrease in turbidity with time. This relaxation was evaluated by fitting the data to the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function. It was found that irrespective of the starch to particle charge ratio the relaxation time was similar. Moreover, a molecular weight dependence on the relaxation time was found, as well as a more pronounced initial

Summary: Basal and stimulated release of long-acting EDRF by bovine pulmonary arteries
Endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF) is supposed to be identical to nitric oxide (NO). A characteristic of NO is its half-life of 6-50 seconds. We report here bioassay experiments suggesting the presence of a long-acting EDRF. An endothelium intact segment of the main bovine pulmonary artery (generator) and an endothelium deprived artery strip (detector) were seperately perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution. The effluent of the generator was collected and permitted to stand in an open beaker at 37 °C for periods exceeding five minutes. Following this the collected effluent (CE) perfused the histamine precontracted detector, causing significant relaxation. The same degree of relaxation could be observed after storing CE for 80-120 minutes. After reaching steady state generator effluent (G) was directly superfused over the detector (time delay about two seconds) resulting in a more pronounced relaxation. Addition of pharmacological stimuli of EDRF mediated relaxation augmented, addition of ...

Escorting α-globin to eNOS: α-globin-stabilizing protein paves the way
In the vascular wall, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) produces NO to regulate peripheral vascular resistance, tissue perfusion, and blood pressure. In resistance arteries, eNOS couples with α-globin and, through chemical reactions, modulates NO diffusion needed for vascular smooth muscle relaxation. While α-globin protein alone is known to be unstable, the mechanisms that enable α-globin protein expression remain elusive. Here, Lechauve et al. report that arterial endothelium expresses α hemoglobin-stabilizing protein, which acts as a critical chaperone protein for α-globin expression and vascular function.. ...

pH Sensitivity of Voltage Sensing Domain Relaxation by Carlos A. Villalba-Galea
Voltage sensing domain (VSD) relaxation is a process involving a voltage-independent transition from the activated state into the relaxed state. This process has been shown to shift the voltage dependence for sensing charge movement (sensing current) in the voltage sensitive phosphatase (VSP) known as Ci-VSP and to slow down the deactivation of potassium currents in Shaker and Kv1.2. Given the effect of VSD relaxation on the dynamics of these voltage sensitive proteins, it is thought that the relaxed and the active states are comprised of different set of conformations. Thus, it is possible that these states are sensitive to different physiological parameters. Here, it is shown that VSD activation and relaxation in Ci-VSP display different sensitivity to external pH (pHEXT). Sensing currents of Ci-VSP recorded during activation slowed down as pHEXT was decreased. Noteworthy, the kinetic of deactivating sensing currents was less affected, suggesting that the initial activation of the VSD involved a pHEXT

NMR Relaxation Studies of Ferroelectric Colemanite,
Proton spin-lattice relaxation of the Zeeman reservoir in the laboratory and rotating frames and of the dipolar reservoir have been studied in ferroelectric colemanite. These studies indicate the presence of two relaxation mechanisms which can be related to motions of the water molecules. The first, referred to as the flip mode and identified with 180 degree flips of the water molecules about their H-O-H bisectrices, is characterized by a correlation time and U-shaped relaxation minimum expected for a normal thermally activated process. The second, referred to as the jump mode and associated with a structural configuration change, produces a cusp-shaped dip in the relaxation over a very small temperature range in the vicinity of the phase transition. Your Recommended Daily Allowance for Relaxation Stress is the curse of living in modern times. Everyone suffers from stress. And the stress we suffer takes a heavy toll on our bodies, emotions and minds. Feeling stressed out, worn out by fatigue or just simply having a miserable day, the best thing to do is relax. Watching television may be a form of relaxation for some, but is not a recommended method by experts. When we watch TV we are bombarded with commercials, ads, sounds and images. So how do we achieve relaxation? If there are thousands of ways we can get stressed, one of them is not meeting deadlines, there are also many ways we can relax. In recent studies, experts have determined that heart disease is linked to anger and irritability is linked to mental stress. Too much stress brings about ischemia that can lead to or cause a heart attack. Relaxation takes on added importance in light of this matter. Managing your anger and attitude is significant to heart health, and relaxation can ...

Hopefully, whether or not you knew it, you let out a big sigh of happiness. For the record, I dont believe that telling the wish ruins it. None of these compounds affected resting tension, noradrenaline-induced contraction or endothelium-independent relaxation produced by sodium nitroprusside or bumetanide. However, they all reversed the relaxation induced by acetylcholine, carbamylcholine or adenosine 5′-triphosphate, by a factor of approximately 66%.. 3. This reversal of relaxation was unaffected by indomethacin and did not require the presence of cyclosporin A in the vehicles, and was completely abolished by l-arginine (3 × 10−-5 mol/l).. 4. It is concluded that vehicles used for commercial preparations of cyclosporin A interfere with the synthesis of endothelium-derived relaxing factor at an ...

Basic Pharmacology of Commonly Used Cardiovascularly Active Drugs | CTSNet
The sympathomimetic catecholamines produce effects that depend upon their relative specificity for alpha, beta 1 and beta 2 receptors.. Adrenaline: With both alpha and beta effects this will produce an augmentation in heart rate, systolic blood pressure and cardiac output. In addition it produces relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. However these effects occur at the expense of increased myocardial oxygen demand and reduced perfusion of skin, kidneys and other organs. It is used for its inotropic effect at doses of 0.01-0.02 μg/kg/min titrated according to response.. Noradrenaline: This has predominantly alpha effects but also slight beta effects on the heart. It produces an increase in both systolic and diastolic pressure but its principle effect is to increase peripheral resistance. This is disadvantageous when peripheral resistance is normal as it then produces an increase in resistance and raises cardiac afterload. However it is useful when the peripheral resistance is inappropriately ...

Authors: Iyo, Toshiya , Sasaki, Naoki , Maki, Yasuyuki , Nakata, Mitsuo Article Type: Research Article Abstract: In 1993 we proposed an empirical formula for describing the relaxation modulus of cortical bone based on the results of stress relaxation experiments performed for 1×105 sec: \[E(t)=E_{0}\bigl\{A\exp \bigl[-(t/\tau_{1})^{\beta}\bigr]+(1-A)\exp (-t/\tau_{2})\bigr\},\quad (0,A,\ \beta ,1\ \mbox{and}\ \tau_{1}\ll\tau_{2}),\] where E0 is the initial value of the relaxation modulus, A is the portion of the first term, τ1 and τ2 are characteristic relaxation times, and β is a shape factor [Sasaki et al., J. Biomechanics 26 (1993), 1369]. Although the relaxation properties of bone under various external conditions were described well by the above equation, recent experimental …results have indicated some limitations in its application. In order to construct an empirical formula for the relaxation modulus of cortical bone that has a high degree of completeness, stress relaxation ...

Maxwell-Wagner Relaxations and their Contributions to the High Permitt by Wei Li and Robert W. Schwartz
Calcium copper titanate ceramics were fabricated by cold isostatic pressing at various calcination and sintering conditions. Depending on fabrication condition, three electrical responses were observed in the combined modulus and impedance plots, indicating the presence of two Maxwell-Wagner relaxations. These electrical responses show different response to temperature and applied field. The activation energies, as well as the driving force factors, were calculated for these relations. The determined activation energy values are in the range of 0.57 to 0.65 eV. The contribution of Maxwell-Wagner relaxations to the high permittivity of CCTO and related materials is briefly discussed.
Getting My relaxation massage To Work
You awake extra refreshed, with further energy and Your system is allowed to recover more thoroughly. In addition, becoming perfectly-rested is noted to foster increased focus, as well. Chatting calls for your brain to remain Energetic, which can inhibit your relaxation reaction. Instead, seek to target your respiratory or starting to be extra meditative. As an alternative to heading straight into some more energetic action, try and program your relaxation massage when you have practically nothing intense to perform afterward. When you can nap right after your massage, much the better. A massage will frequently encourage the discharge of a lot of toxins in Your system, which is extremely advantageous. But you need to flush them out as quickly as is possible. Water might help ...

Patent US20080173552 - Gated Amperometry - Google Patents
A sensor system, device, and methods for determining the concentration of an analyte in a sample is described. Gated amperometric pulse sequences including multiple duty cycles of sequential excitations and relaxations may provide a shorter analysis time and/or improve the accuracy and/or precision of the analysis. The disclosed gated amperometric pulse sequences may reduce analysis errors arising from the hematocrit effect, variance in cap-gap volumes, non-steady-state conditions, mediator background, under-fill, temperature changes in the sample, and a single set of calibration constants.
On the Design and Analysis of Correlated Conjoint Experiments Using Difference Designs | ACR
In equation (7) the parameters of each attribute are the same for all alternatives, although each alternative can have a different brand weight, which represents a contrast with the base brand. Difference designs permit one to relax the assumption that attribute parameters are the same across brands by specifying alternative-specific parameters for one or more of the brands of interest. However, this relaxation may create analytic problems, as we indicate later. Difference designs also permit mixed model specifications in which some vectors of attribute differences have common or generic parameters, while other parameters defined on absolute attribute level vectors may be alternative-specific.. Only attribute differences are orthogonal in difference designs; thus, the absolute levels of attribute values can be highly correlated. This can be a problem if one estimates alternative specific effects for two or more attributes common to all brands because correlations among absolute attribute ...

Structural and electronic properties of the (100) surface and bulk of alkaline-earth metal oxides
Electronic and structural properties of the (100) surfaces and bulk of MgO, CaO, SrO, and BaO have been studied using the projector augmented wave (PAW) method within the local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation. Relaxed (100) MgO shows the positive rumpling of 2.2% whereas (100) CaO, (100) SrO, and (100) BaO exhibit increasingly negative rumpling and surface contraction. (100) CaO is a border case between the two trends and the sign of the rumpling of this surface can be changed at distortion. We find that the surface structures obtained as a result of relaxation are largely determined by an increasing interaction between the cation semicore states and oxygen p states observed in the oxide series.. ...
