Ive heard that my muscle cramps on longer runs can be caused by low salt levels? Is this true and why does that happen?". Yes, low salt levels are one cause of muscle cramps during long runs. "Salt" generally refers to sodium, which is an essential electrolyte. During exercise sodium is lost in sweat and blood sodium levels drop. When this happens, the body regulates sodium levels and a cascade of hormonal changes occurs to bring sodium back up. In persons who are heavy or salty sweaters, the body may not be able to keep up with the amount of sodium being lost in sweat and sodium levels can drop dangerously low, called hyponatremia. Before sodium levels drop into ranges that can be called hyponatremia, muscle cramps and twitches may occur. To avoid these types of cramps, you may need to consume more sodium surrounding workouts.. The Mechanism. Sodium, along with other electrolytes, controls muscle contractions by triggering nerve impulses. When sodium levels drop, the nerve signals go haywire ...

True cramps involve part or all of a single muscle or a group of muscles that generally act together, such as the muscles that flex several adjacent fingers. Most authorities agree that true cramps are caused by hyperexcitability of the nerves that stimulate the muscles. They are overwhelmingly the most common type of skeletal muscle cramps. True cramps can occur in a variety of circumstances as follows.. Injury: Persistent muscle spasm may occur as a protective mechanism following an injury, such as a broken bone. In this instance, the spasm tends to minimize movement and stabilize the area of injury. Injury of the muscle alone may cause the muscle to spasm.. Vigorous activity: True cramps are commonly associated with the vigorous use of muscles and muscle fatigue (in sports or with unaccustomed activities). Such cramps may come during the activity or later, sometimes many hours later. Likewise, muscle fatigue from sitting or lying for an extended period in an awkward position or any repetitive ...
exercise. It can also happen while you are sitting, walking or even while you are asleep. Sometimes it has been observed that even the slightest movement that shortens a muscle can trigger a cramp. Although the exact cause of muscle cramps has not been determined, some researchers believe inadequate stretching and muscle fatigue lead to some abnormalities in mechanisms that control muscle contraction. Some factors that may have a role to play include exercising or working in intense heat, dehydration and depletion of salt and minerals (electrolytes ...

Lower leg muscle cramps are painful contractions, that happen involuntarily. These cramps affect people who train hard and lack electrolytes in their body.
Electrolytes and hydration must make their way through the bloodstream in order to have an effect on muscle cramps. This process takes much too long to provide relief. In fact, it takes one hour for electrolytes,[2] 30 minutes for bananas, [3] and five minutes for water. [4] For athletes, this amount of time can hinder performance due to the lack of relief of their muscular cramps.. But what about using these methods to prevent cramps rather than using them to stop cramps once they start? Even as a preventative, these measures are still not an effective choice. Researchers performed sweat testing of laborers in shipyards and mines 100 years ago. What was found was that the sweat contained high levels of chloride, which makes up half of the salt content in your sweat. This resulted in leading scientists to believe that it was the absence of this electrolyte causing muscles to malfunction rather than dehydration. [5]. ...

Some people find that using ice packs can help relax the tense muscles, others have better luck with heat such as from heating pads, warming packs, even warm towels. Be careful when applying ice or heat to a sore part of your body. Ice should never be held directly on the skin. Ice should always be buffered with at least one layer of cloth. Heating pads can get very warm and can cause burns, so be sure to monitor the heat level and keep a layer of fabric between the heat and the skin. Massage may help as well, although it can be painful as the knot is being worked out. If the cause of the cramping is dehydration, then fluids with electrolytes (sports drinks, for example) are essential to balance the fluid loss.. For athletes who experience a lot of cramping good nutrition is important. Adequate fluid and electrolytes may help limit the cramping. This could mean meeting with a dietitian to discuss diet and eating habits.. Some muscle cramps can be caused as a side effect of certain medications. ...

ypokalemic. Those are cations. Losing cations leads to a state of metabolic acidosis. I bet Im getting ready to start hyperventilating in order for my respiratory compensatory mechanisms to kick in. I wonder if my hemoglobin in low? If my hemoglobin is low and I start hyperventilating then I will become hypoxic. Hypoxemia could lead to confusion and coma. I wonder if I go back to sleep if I will just go into a coma. Plus my current state of hyponatremia can lead to confusion. Thats not as bad as my state of hypokalemia. That can lead to muscle cramps and heart attacks. I bet Im going to have a heart attack. This is how Im going to die: sitting on the toilet in a dehydrated state. It would kind of be embarrassing if I died and my pants were pulled down. Oh well, I guess Ill get back in bed. It would be better to have a heart attack there anyway. Ill probably start having muscle cramps soon. That will be annoying and painful. Ideally I can go to sleep before the muscle cramps start, then I ...
You could be out for a run or drifting off to sleep when it happens: The muscles of your calf or foot suddenly become hard, tight, and extremely painful. You are having a muscle cramp. Sometimes called charley horses -- particularly when they are in the calf muscles -- cramps are caused by muscle spasms, involuntary contractions of one or more muscles. In addition to the foot and calf muscles, other muscles prone to spasms include the front and back of the thigh, the hands, arms, abdomen, and muscles along the rib cage.
What is a cramp? About two in every three athletes experience painful muscle cramp/s at some stage during sport. These episodes are often referred to as Exercise Associated Muscle Cramping (EAMC).. What causes a cramp? A number of theories have been put forward to explain what causes cramps during exercise however, the most agreed upon cause of EAMC is fatigue in the exercising muscle. This is why cramps most commonly occur in the muscle groups directly involved in the exercise (e.g. the calf muscle in running or the foot during swimming).. Research shows that abnormal blood levels of potassium, magnesium or calcium do not cause EAMC and although some athletes have large losses of sodium during sport from sweat, the evidence that this causes a cramp is not convincing. While dehydration has long been claimed to cause of cramps, numerous recent studies of athletes competing in endurance events have shown no difference in the hydration status of those experiencing cramps and who dont. However, it ...

Leg cramps are an unintentional contraction of the muscle of your calf, and can be very painful. There is some disagreement about what causes leg cramps, but a diet with enough calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium is thought to help. To relive a leg cramp, you should straighten your leg (the one with the cramp) and pull up on your toes while "pointing" your heel. You can also achieve the same result by standing up on a hard floor. If you are suffering from frequent leg cramps, make sure you are salting your food to taste, and eating foods high in calcium (dairy, dark leafy greens), potassium (bananas, oranges), and magnesium (soy beans, almonds). If you have varicose veins or a history of blood clots, be aware that a pain in the calf can signal a blood-clot and you should not massage the area until that can be ruled out.. Leave a comment ...
Muscle spasms and cramps are spontaneous, often painful muscle contractions.. Most people are familiar with the sudden pain of a muscle cramp. The rapid, uncontrolled contraction, or spasm, happens unexpectedly, with either no stimulation or some trivially small one. The muscle contraction and pain last forseveral minutes, and then slowly ease. Cramps may affect any muscle, but aremost common in the calves, feet, and hands. While painful, they are harmless, and in most cases, not related to any underlying disorder. Nonetheless, cramps and spasms can be manifestations of many neurological or muscular diseases.. The terms cramp and spasm can be somewhat vague, and they are sometimes usedto include types of abnormal muscle activity other than sudden painful contraction. These include stiffness at rest, slow muscle relaxation, and spontaneous contractions of a muscle at rest (fasciculation). Fasciculation is a typeof painless muscle spasm, marked by rapid, uncoordinated contraction of manysmall ...

Great work gentlemen. This is very interesting stuff. I appreciate all the detail, which I have not yet fully digested. I posted a few days ago because I have suffered from infuriating calf cramps in several marathons. Ive run 13 and cramped in 4 or 5. A few times, Ive been right on the border, where my calves tingled and told me that if I went any faster, they would cramp. So I had to slow things down, even though I otherwise felt good and had plenty of gas in the tank. I knew electrolytes werent the issue because I was taking in plenty, and it seemed evident to me that fatigue was the issue. I tend to wear light weight running shoes in races, and I think my legs just cant take the pounding. I am pretty methodical in my training, and I have suffered from cramps even when I was running well within my fitness level. I have never cramped or felt similar sensations in half marathon races or 23 mile training runs in the heat. I wonder if switching to more cushioned shoes like I use in training ...
