The Quanta D interview of Jiang was published in May. Online media coverage of Jiangs Quanta D interview released in June, gaining coverage in online newspapers like the Boston Globe, Small Business Trendsetters and the International Business Times.. William Jiangs current advocacy continues with natural mental health but also Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). Jiang released a video presentation and lecture in June titled MCS: Past Present Future - A Global Perspective. Jiangs mental health blog defines MCS, "Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic medical condition and syndrome characterized by symptoms that the affected person attributes to low-level chemical exposures to commonly used chemicals. Commonly attributed substances include scented products, pesticides, plastics, synthetic fabrics, smoke, petroleum products, and paint fumes.". The American Medical Association does not currently consider Multiple Chemical Sensitivity an illness.. According to WebMD, which lists MCS in ...
As stated before, a genuinely allergic response - ( IgE mediated response), is a feature of some with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity in regards to allergy or sensitization to one or more SPECIFIC allergens & this would certainly be detected with a relevant challenge test (eg. Skin-prick test). The widely reported & previously described effects whereby a sensitivity to multiple toxicants or irritants is experienced (spreading) -would almost certainly NOT show a true allergic response to all of these multiple toxicants, but nevertheless, we are led to believe in the veracity of these statements of problems: because of the obvious sincerity of the very many Multiple Chemical Sensitivity - environmental illness sufferers with whom we have had dealings over the years. because of the common threads that run between them - ie. many sufferers "tell the same stories" albeit in a different way. because of the well-documented phenomenon of "cross-reaction" in true allergy, whereby a person with an allergy ...

The cytokine differences in MCS seen in this study are in line with findings from other medically unexplained disorders often associated with MCS, such as FMS, CFS and GWS.. 7 Because of the target tissue is the brain or the respiratory tract, the best method of administration is intranasal.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------. ...
By and large, it would be true and fair to say that multiple chemical sensitivity, however caused, is inextricably linked to the prevalence of modern, synthetic TOXIC chemicals. These toxic chemicals are all around us. Even if a Physical initialization or one due to a Natural material (eg. wood dust ), was the origin of the problem, cross-reactions (generalization), as discussed previously will usually or often mean that the multiple chemical sensitivity sufferer will become sensitive to a breadth of toxic synthetic chemicals which are difficult if not impossible to avoid in a modern setting. It is often the case that for the average "healthy" individual , the toxic chemical in question poses no significant health risk but that to the multiple chemical sensitivity sufferer, that same "dose" of chemical can cause all manner of unpleasant or even dangerous symptoms. The healthy individual is not affected because -. they are not allergic or sensitized to that toxin. the toxin is present at a ...
Fighting multiple chemical sensitivity and searching for a safe home. Community - September 25, 2012 12:01 am. For Lou Anne Cottingham, finding the right home is more complicated than just finding the right neighborhood or number of bedrooms.. Cottingham has searched for a home in Hamilton County since at least last year to no avail. Cottingham has a disorder called multiple chemical sensitivity, adding a whole new level of difficulty to house hunting.. Cottingham started her fight with the disorder 26-and-a-half years ago and wants the community to know it impacts many people, including those who are educated.. "There are so many people who are homeless with this illness," Cottingham said, "and its not known because they dont go through the normal circa of homeless people.". Multiple chemical sensitivity is a disorder that is activated by exposures to toxic materials or irritants, such as mold. As a person is exposed multiple times, he becomes more and more sensitive to the source, spreading ...

MCS is a devastating illness that makes it difficult to live in our modern world. Its hard to imagine that everyday household items like cleaning products and perfume can make you sick, but for people with MCS, virtually everything in their homes can trigger reactions," says Debra Lynn Dadd, consumer advocate.. For MCS AwarenessMonth in May 2017, Debra has teamed up with EnviroKlenz, a manufacturer of nontoxic deodorizing products, to share how she recovered from MCS. She has outlined her process in "How to Recover from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and Other Environmental Illnesses.". Debra Lynn Dadd was one of the first to be diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), an immune system disorder that results in becoming sensitive to all types of products that are made from petrochemicals. Debra was diagnosed in 1978 when MCS was just becoming known. Because there were no resources at the time, she wrote and published her first book in 1982 to explain MCS medically and give ...
New Perspective on Big Issue: Why Are We So Sick?. Illness activist, Glenna Chance, seeks to reverse societys toxic trend in new book. Rochester, NY (PRWEB) October 06, 2011 An illness activist with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is bringing a new perspective to the role society plays in our overall health.. In Which Poison Will Change Your Life? (published by AuthorHouse), Glenna Chance brings readers an eye-opening look at todays "invisible illnesses." Highlighting the confusion that surrounds the language of the food and chemical industries, Chance, a long-time environmental consultant, unveils explanations and examples with detailed chapters including "What Is It… Really?" and "Whats In It… Really?" Aiming to clarify terms and definitions that many assume they understand, Chances mission is to provide readers with the factual information needed to prevent future illness.. The book introduces and explains the authors own illness, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and related "invisible ...
Although this explanation may not fully apply to multiple chemical sensitivity, undoubtedly the discriminating physician must include the impact of psychosocial elements when evaluating these patients.. In addition to the numerous chemical, hormonal, immunologic and neurologic assessments performed by the clinical ecologists, a new "objective" tool has been added to their armamentarium-the single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan. During the past five years, we have seen a growing percentage of patients with previously diagnosed multiple chemical sensitivity or a similar diagnosis who had undergone SPECT scans. All of the results in these patients were positive, with the most common diagnosis being chemically induced toxic encephalopathy.. Fincher and colleagues4 report their experience with SPECT scans in 25 patients with mixed solvent exposure. All of these patients had positive results. However, even a superficial review of the article reveals numerous technical and procedural ...
I was in the depths of despair when I first started working with Jane Fecteau in mid-October 2006. I had had a near complete systemic shut-down after a medical treatment to address one of the underlying causes of my rare auto-immune syndrome. I was unable to eat, unable to have bowel movements, and unable to sleep more than moments at a time.. The pain that I was experiencing throughout my body was intense, unbearable and debilitating.. Five days after working twice a day with Jane, I was able to sleep for five hours, my ability to digest foods and eliminate returned and after four months of intensive work, my health, on all levels, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual has miraculously improved. I continue to need to work with Jane. This doesnt surprise me considering the number of health issues that I have, including: auto-immune syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, a wide range of food intolerances, high blood pressure and toxic overload, to name a few.. I am so grateful to have ...

Across the 6 tests used as indicators of brain impairment, comprising a total of 17 test variables, the MCS group performed poorer only in a complex reaction time test (mean reaction time; p = 0.002; t test). Correction for self-ratings of mental distress and trait psychasthenia did not eliminate the deviation in the reaction time test. Because the results on most tests were within normal limits, brain impairment was not evidenced. The following is a personal account of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity by a member of South London Solidarity Federation. The author has made some additional points in response to comments which are included in the addendum below.. MCS is an adverse reaction to airborne chemicals, such as air fresheners, solvents, and scented cleaning products. Symptoms vary from nose and throat irritation, fatigue and headaches to full-blown immune system overload. It can be triggered by a one off or severe exposure to chemicals, pesticides or other toxins and become a long-term susceptibility to the low levels of exposure now common in many public spaces.. In 2016 campaigning in the UK succeeded in getting MCS recognised as a health condition, as an aspect of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. One possible reason for the reluctance of the UK authorities to acknowledge MCS was the number of Gulf War veterans who returned to the UK with MCS and other symptoms. Research and campaigning has been stronger in the USA. The US ...

Green ribbons signify Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and May is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Month. But you probably wont be seeing many green ribbons around.Like AIDS, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity or Environmental Illness is one condition people just dont want to think about.Okay, we all know someone who reacts to a particular face cream or detergent. And theres perfume sensitivity. A lot of people cant be around perfume, and thats no big deal. But, what if our planet was so polluted that some people couldnt tolerate chemicals at all? These people would react to perfume, detergent, dryer sheets, paint, pesticides, carpet, glues, makeup, deodorant, and pretty much everything sold in stores. They would be so sensitive to such a long list of chemicals, they would have stay away from people just to survive. What if prevention and the cure for this condition, was the same: Everyone had to stop shopping. Not altogether; people could still buy natural, chemical-free products, but basically 90% of ...
Adelaide, South Australia: Today. When countless people around the world mark International Multiple Chemical Sensitivity/MCS Awareness Day on May 12, (& for the entire month of May), many will be doing so from the forced confinement of their own home, like 39 year old South Australian MCS sufferer, Amelia Hill, who has been isolated from the outside world due to severe Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) for almost 6 years.. People with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) are made sick by exposures to low levels of many common chemicals - such as perfume, pesticides, tobacco smoke, air fresheners, cleaning products, solvents and VOCs found in paint, new carpets, building materials. Many of these chemicals at high levels, can make anyone sick, but chemically sensitive people can become extremely ill after exposures to even minute amounts of these substances (1). Chemically sensitive people also frequently react to foods, drugs, electromagnetic fields & wifi ...

Patients with multiple chemical sensitivity and eczema patients with airway symptoms elicited by odorous chemicals have enhanced cough reflex to capsaicin when applying the tidal breathing method. The aims of the present study were to test whether the capsaicin induced cough reflex was enhanced when applying the single breath inhalation method in similar groups of patients with symptoms related to odorous chemicals e.g. other persons wearing of perfume; and to investigate to what extent the reporting of lower airway symptoms influenced the cough reflex. Sixteen patients fulfilling Cullens criteria for multiple chemical sensitivity and 15 eczema patients with airway symptoms elicited by odorous chemicals were compared with 29 age-matched, healthy controls. We measured C5--the capsaicin concentration causing five coughs or more--using the single breath inhalation test. No difference was found between groups in age, body mass index or pulmonary function. The median C5 were 129 micromol/L (control group),
MCS was first proposed as a distinct disease by Theron G. Randolph in 1950. In 1965, Randolph founded the Society for Clinical Ecology as an organization to promote his ideas about symptoms reported by his patients. As a consequence of his insistence upon his own, non-standard definition of allergy and his unusual theories about how the immune system and toxins affect people, the ideas he promoted were widely rejected, and clinical ecology emerged as a non-recognized medical specialty.[13] In the 1990s, an association was noted with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and Gulf War syndrome.[49] In 1994, the AMA, American Lung Association, US EPA and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission published a booklet on indoor air pollution that discusses MCS, among other issues. The booklet further states that a pathogenesis of MCS has not been definitively proven, and that symptoms that have been self-diagnosed by a patient as related to MCS could actually be related to allergies or have a ...

Today, I came across the book Which Poison Will Change Your Life by Glenna Chance. Shes an illness activist who has written this book seeking to reverse societys toxic trends.. Due to an illegal pesticide application in 1988, Chance was poisoned. At the time she was pursing a career in music; the life-changing diagnosis of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity sent her in a new direction where she has had to deal with the physical implications and lack of legal parity that often accompany MCS disability. She has worked hard to bring attention to the disease and support those who suffer with it.. From the PR website:. "The book introduces and explains the authors own illness, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and related "invisible illnesses" which include Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Autoimmune Disease among others. Comprehensively addressing government involvement in these illnesses and the problems they create, Which Poison Will Change Your Life encourages readers to question the medical ...
Reliable disease biomarkers characterizing and identifying electrohypersensitivity and multiple chemical sensitivity as two etiopathogenic aspects of a unique pathological disorder. Abstract: Much of the controversy over the causes of electro- hypersensitivity (EHS) and multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) lies in the absence of both recognized clinical crite- ria and objective biomarkers for widely accepted diagnosis. Since 2009, we have prospectively investigated, clinically and biologically, 1216 consecutive EHS and/or MCS-self reporting cases, in an attempt to answer both questions. We report here our preliminary data, based on 727 evaluable of 839 enrolled cases: 521 (71.6%) were diagnosed with EHS, 52 (7.2%) with MCS, and 154 (21.2%) with both EHS and MCS. Two out of three patients with EHS and/or MCS were female; mean age (years) was 47. As inflammation appears to be a key process resulting from electromagnetic field (EMF) and/ or chemical effects on tissues, and histamine release is ...
There is no doubt that our environment is increasing in toxicity.1-10 In fact, it seems that almost every day we are bombarded by journal articles and media advertisements that inform us about the need to cleanse and detoxify from our surroundings. As NDs, we are well aware of the burden these chemicals have on our patients long-term health. Even before the emergence of societys philosophy of "better living through chemistry," our ancient roots were imprinted by our predecessors use of detoxification for removing obstacles to cure. Today, much more scientific research is validating this link of toxic burdens to chronic health conditions and environmental concerns.10-13. For example, as these unnatural chemicals enter our water supply, they affect even the best established biochemistry. The following testimony was given by Dr Gina Solomon to the US Congress Committee on Energy and Commerce:. Multiple contaminants are turning up in our nations waterways, including in water millions of people ...
If you are one of the few Ontarians that doesnt have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) or doesnt have a relative, a friend, a co-worker, who has MCS then please read on. If you are one of the more than a quarter of a million Ontarians who have Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (217,000 in 2005, Statistics Canada), also known as Environmental Sensitivities (ES), a human rights disability, then you know how desperately important healthy, safe housing is to improving your health, to making life livable.. I had no idea that when I started experiencing increasing migraines, sudden weight gain, rashes, coughing, IBS, difficulty concentrating, irritability, and other symptoms at work, that I was developing MCS/ES. Very small amounts of chemicals found in fabric softener, air freshener, perfume, scented personal care products, detergents, pesticides and more, were toxic to my body - chemically injuring the organs of my body. At first, I would be fine when I returned home, but over many months, the ...

Years ago, I found myself in an almost inexplicable health predicament that dramatically changed my lifestyle.. Courtesy of those events, I sincerely offer my expertise and practical experience for your healthy living benefits.. Well, what happened, you ask?. I woke up one morning feeling terrible. My throat was burning, my head hurt, I felt strangely weak all over and it was hard to concentrate. Talk about brain fog! My throat really hurt. I looked in the mirror to see that the back of my throat was flame red. And this was no strep or cold. Id never, ever felt like this.. I also noticed a distinct smell that pervaded the home…especially when I opened the kitchen cabinet doors. The odor was extremely pungent. It made the inside of my nose sting when I breathed. It smelled, well…toxic.. Just the day before, we had loaded up our young family in Virginia and moved to Jacksonville, Florida so that my husband could pursue his post graduate degree in seminary while working at a church as an ...

Enjoy what you can and focus on it and what you can do. Try not to get fixated on what you cant do.. I am acutely aware that some of my readers are housebound and that these last 3 posts on travel are not helpful in the aspect that one who is housebound cant take the sort of chances I did with this trip. My hope is that maybe seeing the pictures (especially from the post about the castle) might still be worth a read for those unable to travel. Obviously different people are at different levels as far as what they are able to do and I dont mean to suggest in any of these posts that anyone should take unsafe risks. The risks I took with this trip were ones I felt comfortable taking but I know that there are people who wouldnt be able to take the same risks. Everyone is in a unique living situation. What works for one person may not work at all for another. Hopefully, these posts may provide some helpful tips, ideas, and even hope for those who are able to do limited travel. There is no doubt that electrical sensitivity (ES) is a real phenomenon - I have had too many people affected by electro-magnetic radiation (EMR) to think otherwise. Clinically I nearly always see electrical sensitivity in people who are already suffering from chemical sensitivity. Chemical sensitivity is often switched on by some sort of exposure to chemicals which can be a single overwhelming exposure or chronic low grade exposure. This leads to multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) but then sufferers notice that it is not just chemicals that are a problem - they are also reacting to electromagnetic radiation. Its hardly surprising that one can be electrically sensitive - high doses of EMR can certainly kill. EMR is a known cause of cancer. So that some people sensitise to it is inevitable - there are obvious parallels with chemical sensitivity. There are many symptoms that can be switched on by electrical sensitivity and it appears that almost any electro-magnetic frequency can cause this. ...
June 3rd, 2001. by Barbara Rubin. The human body is miraculous in its diversity and complexity. However, today?s technology creates many products for our daily use from materials which are not compatible with our biochemistry (e.g. petrochemicals in plastics or fuels; pesticides). Our bodies have a natural capacity for removing poisons from our systems since we normally create toxins as part of the food digestion process. These ?detoxification? pathways in the body are now overworked in helping us remove our modern synthetic chemicals from our bodies before they can harm us. Industry and federal regulators like the EPA decide upon how much of a chemical it would take to harm the average healthy adult (male) and produce/market such products accordingly. It is generally explained that ?the dose makes the poison?. However, the existence of the chemically sensitive person tends to belie this theory.. The condition known as MCS or multiple chemical sensitivity, means that serious adverse health ...

This issue of Reviews on Environmental Health consists of invited papers on several syndromes of uncertain etiology but ones that pose serious and severe debilification and interference with quality of life for those affected. Often in aggregate called "idiopathic environmental intolerance" they include electromagnetic hypersensitivity, multiple chemical sensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, Gulf War Illness and likely some others less well defined. All have in common fatigue, pain (especially headaches and joint and muscle pain), often altered cognitive function, cardiac problems, and impaired mobility and balance. Often, but not always, some specific event or exposure triggers the initiation of the syndrome. Because the symptoms are relatively non-specific, patients may unfortunately be referred to psychiatric rather than medical care. There are few effective treatments other than reducing exposure to triggering environmental factors. There is increasing world-wide awareness ...
QUOTE=hawk1;4960845]Does anyone else who has developed chemical sensitivity also experienced trigeminal nerve damage? When I first developed chemical sensitivity, it started with extreme burning in the face, nose and eyes. Once the burning eases up, my eye sockets will feel bruised for days afterwards. Chemicals do not have to smell to be present but I know that my reactions are starting when the burning starts in and I know to get away from the area immediately because the longer I stay around, my reactions will progress and pain will move into my chest and rib cage causing internal pain that can last for a couple of days to a week, depending on the exposure. I have been to EI specialists and not a one has mentioned the possibility of trigeminal neuralgia and I just happened on to an article that explains that chemical irritation can cause this condition, and the symptoms you experience. I have very minimal pain in the mandibular nerve but alot of pain in the areas of the ophthalmic nerve and ...
INTRODUCTION: Based on the assumption that professional groups with frequent chemical exposure are at an increased risk for developing Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), a sample of 45 professional pest controllers was investigated. METHODS: The examination of the pest controllers consisted of a physical and laboratory examination with urine screening for pyrethroid metabolites, a psychiatric interview, a neuropsychological test battery, and a chemical sensitivity questionnaire. RESULTS: Persistent or serious work related health problems and chemical sensitivity were not reported. In urine, cis-3-(2,2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (Br(2)CA) was detected in 11%, 4-fluoro-3-phenoxybenzoic acid (F-PBA) in 7%. 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) exceeded the reference range in 9%, cis- and trans-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethyl-cyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (Cl(2)CA) in 20%. Increased liver enzymes and blood count deviations were rather common. 38% had psychiatric ...
ARA) - Parents do a lot of things for the sake of their children -- from sitting through soccer games in the freezing rain to making sure they eat a healthy, balanced diet to providing a safe, clean place to live. Unfortunately, many of the cleaning products commonly found on grocery store shelves and in your home are not as safe as you might think.. Take a minute to inventory the cleaning products you currently use. How many times do words like "danger," "warning," and "caution" appear on the labels? Cleaning products are exempt from the full ingredient disclosure on product labels as required for food and personal care products and enter the marketplace with little or no testing for potential health risks. But compelling evidence links the chemicals in household products to a whole range of conditions, including cancer, asthma, allergies, multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome, hormonal disruption and reproductive and developmental disorders. For example, many all-purpose cleaners, window ...
Self-diagnosis is at the core of it." He prefers the term "idiopathic environmental intolerances", or IEI, which covers conditions with no obvious cause, like multiple chemical sensitivity, sick building syndrome, food intolerances - even a physical reaction to wind turbines. "The problem is, if you look for a coherent set of symptoms, you are not going to find it. You even find that peoples symptoms change over time. Many have other intolerances in addition to the electrical sensitivity ...
Dental amalgam is often cited too as a reason. A study has shown that it is possible for certain frequencies of electricity which emanate from computer monitors to release amalgam into the body where it can cause chronic toxicity. Indeed, mercury amalgam toxicity from dental work is a topic of heated debate in its own right.. There is a strong link between chemicals toxicity and electrical sensitivities, i.e. that the latter may well be a by-product of the former. The UK based Breakspear Hospital reports that when one removes the chemical sensitivities from the body, the electrical sensitivities disappear also.. The Environmental Health Centre Dallas, reports that of 500 patients treated for MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity), 80% of them also have electrical sensitivities.Other causes of sensitivities include mobile phones & masts, fluorescent lighting and low-energy lamps. http://www.emfnews.org/products.html Austria, ...

to the editor: In their recent letter to the editor,1 Drs. Fung and Kennon misrepresented the position of the World Health Organization (WHO) when they stated that WHO recommends changing the name of multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) to "idiopathic environmental intolerances." The reference2 that the authors cited in their letter was anonymously published and was not authorized by the workshops sponsors (UNEP-ILO-WHO). It contained the following disclaimer:. "These conclusions and recommendations contain the collective views of an international group of experts and do not necessarily represent the decisions or the stated policy of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Labour Organization (ILO) or the World Health Organization (WHO)."2. Despite this disclaimer, some of the workshop participants began to misrepresent WHOs position on MCS after the meeting. In response, WHO issued a statement to participants,3 which reaffirmed the disclaimer and stated that ...
Sometimes I forget how ill I really was. A blessing for sure!. I am revisiting my multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), toxicant induced loss of tolerance (TILT), environmental illness (EI), chronic fatigue (CF), multiple food allergies, irritable bowel, depression, seasonal affected disorder (SAD), stress sensitization and spasmodic dysphonia diagnoses today. I am often reminded about how severely ill and affected I was by these conditions when I get inquires from all over the world asking for help from those still suffering.. All of the preceding diagnoses (plus more) were given to me in the past. I suffered severely for many years and I now have good health and feel good. I can eat all foods and feel save in many environments, avoiding toxic environments as everyone should.. On my journey to good health I tried many strategies, always looking for the cure. Like many people I read every article about the latest supplement and cures and spent a lot of money on trying them. From todays view ...
Environmental Illnesses are real. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Mastocytosis, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Sick Building Syndrome, Gulf War Syndrome---these are all environmental illnesses. We need your help. Environmental illnesses are isolating conditions of separation filled with loss and death: the death of dreams, futures, friendships; the loss of a familiar life in the middle…
There also appears to be a connection between IC and other syndromes such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and vulvodynia and dyspareunia (pain on intercourse). All may have a connection between what has been called Central Sensitivity Syndrome (CSS).. Patients with CSS become sensitised to things that are processed by the central nervous system: lights, odours, smell, touch and pressure on the body. This explains the connection between the above conditions and also the following: migraines, restless legs syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, temperomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) and dysmenorrhoea (painful periods). Some patients have more than one condition, and this helps make sense of the connection.. It appears irritable bowel syndrome, interstitial cystitis and reproductive and pelvic pain may have a connection through nerve pathways in the pelvis. The prevalence of chemical sensitivity (CS) and sensory hyperreactivity (SHR) was assessed in a teenage population. Among a random sample of 401 teenagers, 326 (81.3%) answered questionnaires assessing sensitivity to chemicals and noise, anxiety and depression. A subgroup of 85 teenagers conducted a capsaicin inhalation test. The estimated prevalence was 15.6% for general self-reported CS, 3.7% for CS with affective and behavioral consequences, about 1% for SHR. Sensitivity variables were positively intercorrelated. Risk factors for general CS were noise sensitivity (OR: 2.1), probable anxiety (OR: 2.5) and female sex (OR: 2.0). CS problems seem to be present also in teenagers, although less so than in adults. Furthermore, CS seems to be related to other environmental sensitivities.. ...

Chemical sensitivity is not considered an allergic reaction because it does not involve the release of IgE (immunoglobin E) antibodies, histamine, or other chemicals by the immune system. However, reactions to certain chemicals may cause reactions similar to those experienced with allergies.. Chemicals that cause sensitivity may include synthetic and natural substances found in:. ...
Now, being told in hospital that I would not be released unless I took medication, I had to give it a try. They started me out on a very low dose - 300mg - and I got head, arm and hand tremors. So they reduced it to 200mg and my mood improved fantastically. What I also found out is that the neuropathy and severe pain were reduced to the point that I WAS NOT bedridden for the next FOUR MONTHS!!!. Last months cycle had me bedridden for one day, and this months cycle is hurting me enough that, had I gone in to work today, Id have come home early due to the pain. Thankfully, today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, so I did not have to work. Hopefully by tomorrow, the pain will have abated again. The bleeding is still heavy every cycle - that has not changed. But going from 3-4 days bedridden down to 0-1 day is a huge, positive change. The Gabapentin has also helped me with chemical sensitivity - I dont know how but it has. The nerve channels are blocked in the brain and the message that says, "IM ...

From todays view ...
by Lucinda Grant Copyright 1997. What is electrical sensitivity? Perhaps you are already familiar with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) whereby the patient develops symptoms from exposure to ordinary levels of synthetic chemicals in common use such as perfumes, pesticides, and household cleaning products. Electrical sensitivity (ES), another environmentally triggered illness, produces symptoms in the patient exposed to common levels of electromagnetic fields (EMF) from electrical sources in the environment: power lines, motors, computers, etc. ES patients often are also MCS patients. Other at-risk groups for developing ES seem to be chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients and those experiencing mercury toxicity from dental amalgams.1 Because the nervous system is a primary site impacted by both chemicals and electromagnetic fields, those with nervous system damage from toxic exposures seem more susceptible to becoming ES too.2,3 Also, overexposure to EMF can singularly bring on ES, ...
My name is Pat Gurnick. I had a Pituitary Tumor (Cushings Disease) removed (Macro 1.4 size) by Dr. Kelly at UCLA.. This has been a long journey for me. In 1990 I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), Fibromyalgia, and Environmental Illness/Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. I was a Needs Assessment and Referral Counselor at Charter Hospital. I than went to work for Brotman Hospital as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor, with their day treatment program for Chronic Mentally Ill Substance Abusers, but by 1992 I was so ill I went on disability. I could not read or write for over a year, so sick. I started a support group, WEBSITE (www.montagestudio.com/cefca) and phone hotline in 1993, to give myself a reason to live. I had such cognition difficulties and fatigue, to name a few symptoms, that I dont honestly know how I achieved this!. In 1994 I thought I was in remission, little more functional and decreased Fibromyalgia pain; yet, I also went through premature ...
Housing and health are clearly linked. Nowhere is this connection more evident than for people with environmental sensitivities.. People living with environmental sensitivities (sometimes called multiple chemical sensitivities or environmental illness) can be made severely ill by the presence of very low levels of pollutants in their homes. It could be the smell from an air freshener or scented cleaning product, off-gassing paint, dust from the carpet, mold, or the smell that comes off of new cabinetry. Most of us dont realize it, but our homes are filled with pollutants that contaminate the air we breathe.. For people living with extreme environmental sensitivities, having appropriate, "healthy" housing can mean the difference between being able to live an independent, full life, and being totally disabled.. For the past few years, CERA has been working with landlord and property managers to address the needs of tenants with environmental sensitivities and improve the air quality in apartment ...

by Judith A. DeCava, C.N.C., L.N.C. What is it? Elimination of poisons or toxins. Why do it? Because were subjected to a huge quantity of environmental contaminants these days which can produce "unfavorable health effects." Health hazards associated with exposure to environmental toxins include "autoimmune" diseases, cardiovascular disorders, kidney damage, digestive tract disturbances, diseases of the nervous system such as Parkinsons disease, sick building syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancers, gland and hormone disruptions, infertility, spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, obesity, and much more. Of course, decreasing the amount of toxins in the environment and reducing our own exposure to toxins are important. But its not enough. Truth is, we cant totally escape toxin exposure in todays world. We all carry some degree of toxic load. Were exposed to toxins all during our lifetime-small amounts that accumulate over time, creating a large body ...

Objectives: To investigate the pathophysiological pathways leading to symptoms elicitation in multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) by comparing gene expression in MCS participants and healthy controls before and after a chemical exposure optimised to cause symptoms among MCS participants. The first hypothesis was that unexposed and symptom=-free MCS participants have similar gene expression patterns to controls and a second hypothesis that MCS participants can be separated from controls based on differential gene expression upon a controlled n=-butanol exposure.. Design: Participants were exposed to 3.7 ppm n-butanol while seated in a windowed exposure chamber for 60 min. A total of 26 genes involved in biochemical pathways found in the literature have been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of MCS and other functional somatic syndromes were selected. Expression levels were compared between MCS and controls before, within 15 min after being exposed to and 4 hours after the ...

Dr. Nafysa Parpia offers a comprehensive detoxification program at GMA. The detoxification program takes place in two distinct phases:. The first phase includes supporting and cleansing the gastrointestinal tract, as well as addressing oxidative stress at the cellular level. This first phase is addressed through diet and some specific nutrients; it is a preparation for the stronger detoxification which takes place next. Should a patient have dysbiosis or parasites, these may need to be cleared with specific protocols before beginning the first phase of detoxification.. The second phase of detoxification is more intensive, and involves major organs and tissues where toxins and heavy metals are typically stored, or which release stored toxins during therapy. This phase often includes chelation therapy, depending on patients needs as seen in their labs, as well as other forms of detoxification based on patient history of chemical exposure, toxicity labs, and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. ...

Abstract. Growing numbers of "electromagnetic hypersensitive" (EHS) people worldwide self-report severely disabling, multiorgan, non-specific symptoms when exposed to low-dose electromagnetic radiations, often associated with symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and/or other environmental "sensitivity-related illnesses" (SRI). This cluster of chronic inflammatory disorders still lacks validated pathogenetic mechanism, diagnostic biomarkers, and management guidelines. We hypothesized that SRI, not being merely psychogenic, may share organic determinants of impaired detoxification of common physic-chemical stressors. Based on our previous MCS studies, we tested a panel of 12 metabolic blood redox-related parameters and of selected drug-metabolizing-enzyme gene polymorphisms, on 153 EHS, 147 MCS, and 132 control Italians, confirming MCS altered -0.0001) glutathione-(GSH), GSH-peroxidase/S-transferase, and catalase erythrocyte activities. First of all, what is MCS. MCS stands for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. This is a condition where a person has been overexposed to one or more chemicals and now reacts and becomes ill from even small amounts of chemicals in his or her environment. I recently became ill with MCS after I inherited a piece of furniture which contained a high degree of formaldehyde in it. Formaldehyde, as some of you may know, is the main chemical used in embalming fluid. It is also a component of thousands of other products such as plywood, pressed board, varnish, paint, sheetrock, clothing, shoes, flu shots, inks, personal care products (shampoo, conditioner, etc.), carpeting, fabrics, yarns, and many other products. Formaldehyde has been banned in Europe from most consumer and building products, but the U.S. continues to use allow its use despite the known hazards of this substance. Basically formaldehyde is an inexpensive chemical that is used as a binder in adhesives and fabrics. The sicknesses it causes seems ...
The mission of MCS America (MCSA) is to propagate medical, legal, and social recognition for multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) as a disorder of organic biological origin induced by toxic environmental insults; to provide support and referral services to the individuals with all illnesses of environmental origin; and to ensure that environmental toxicants are identified, reduced, regulated, and enforced through lobbying for effective legislation. © MCS America. ...
This is a case report about a 5-year-old girl in Japan with multiple recurrent problems: urticaria (hives), angioedema (swelling), headaches, dyspnea (shortness of breath), loss of consciousness, and abdominal pain. Her symptoms were made worse by antihistamines and corticosteroids.. Her diet diary revealed that symptoms occurred after eating colorful sweets such as candies and jellybeans. . . . but skin prick allergy tests were negative for everything.. Because all the allergy tests were negative, but the challenge tests (exposure) were positive for coloring, aspirin and acetamophen (Tylenol), she was diagnosed with intolerance to dyes and NSAID medications. After avoiding them, she still had reactions to fragrances and chemical odors, so she was diagnosed with severe multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS).. AUTHOR CONCLUSIONS: "The present results suggest that in pediatric MCS, food and drug additives containing azo dyes might play important roles as elicitors.". MY THOUGHTS:. I agree with the ...

Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is an ailment, or a family of ailments, that has very real consequences for tens of millions of Americans. In various large surveys 15% to 30% of Americans (37 to 75 million people) report that they are unusually sensitive or allergic to certain common chemicals such as detergents, perfumes, solvents, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, foods, or even the smell of dry-cleaned clothes. An estimated 5% (13 million people) have been diagnosed by a physician as being especially sensitive. Many of these people react so strongly that they can become disabled from very low exposures to common substances.[1, pgs. 232-233] Typical symptoms include prolonged fatigue, memory difficulties, dizziness, lightheadedness, difficulty concentrating, depression, feeling spacey or groggy, loss of motivation, feeling tense or nervous, shortness of breath, irritability, muscle aches, joint pain, headaches, head fullness or pressure, chest pains, difficulty focusing eyes, nausea, and more. ...
Electrical Sensitivity (ES) is an illness that is both highly controversial and little understood. The symptoms can vary a lot between sufferers, but will normally include some of the following: sleep disturbance, tiredness, depression, headaches, restlessness, irritability, concentration problems, forgetfulness, learning difficulties, frequent infections, blood pressure changes, limb and joint pains, numbness or tingling sensations, tinnitus, hearing loss, impaired balance, giddiness and eye problems. There have been reports of cardiovascular problems such as tachycardia, though these are relatively rare. Many of the symptoms reported have a lot in common with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). It seems quite sensible to theorize that both syndromes therefore may affect particularly susceptible members of the population. It may also be that there is a synergistic effect; i.e. people develop symptoms in the presence of both (or multiple) environmental exposures, whereas only one such ...
Do you ever walk into a room only to be hit with a wall of odor from someone who decided to bathe in perfume? Or how about walking into a smokers house? Most people are sensitive to some type of airborne chemical, but people who suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) are extra sensitive to a large number of chemicals in very small quantities. MCS - A Frustrating Condition MCS is not recognized as a true medical condition. Further, there are people who will say that MCS is a psychosomatic response. But those who suffer from MCS *really* suffer. Some of the symptoms of MCS include nausea, headache, scratchy throat, itching eyes, runny nose, sleepiness, dizziness, abdominal cramping, joints aching, ear aches, confusion, etc. Some substances that often cause MCS are tobacco smoke, Read more [...] ...

I have been trying to find appropriate, medically required housing since 2005. I have had a large number of people helping me look, including people from Torontos Shelter Support and Housing Administration (SSHA) and the not for profit organization Center for Equality Rights in Accommodations (CERA). In 5 years we have not found a single, suitable, affordable place that would allow me to survive. Due to the deteriorating circumstances here, my health has continued to decline, and still there has been no effort to make medically required, non-toxic housing available and accessible for people like myself, who are disabled by Environmental Sensitivities, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities, and Electro-Hyper Sensitivities (ES/MCS/EHS). Safe housing is our number one medical need, a place we can avoid the triggers and substances that disable us, in order to heal ...
ck, N.Y.. I am waffling over whether to write about what happened to me today. Fresh, personal, and painful stories can be a recipe for bad writing. I have finally decided to go ahead because, well, I am writing a diary for Grist Magazine this week, and todays day is a momentous one for me, my own story of chemical injury, and my family.. As with others who have multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), I have been on a long road of unraveling how I became sick (it happened in 1980) and searching for every opportunity to get better. In this quest, I have recently had the opportunity to be tested on an acubiofeedback computer. Discussing this machine is out of the scope of a short diary entry so I wont, but I will say that the computer has a powerful database of viruses, heavy metals, pesticides, parasites, and other horrible items many of our bodies are burdened with, and by assessing ones acupressure points, the machine gives a reading of the stresses on your body. Another database is full of ...

If it happens when you wake up it could also be from something in your bedroom. http://www.ei-resource.org/illness-information/environmental-illnesses/multiple-chemical-sensitivity-(mcs ...
The Adrenal Function Panel measures saliva levels of the adrenal hormones cortisol and DHEAs. Low cortisol levels are associated with disturbed sleep, fatigue, trouble concentrating, difficulty waking, chronic allergies, multiple chemical sensitivities and depression. High cortisol levels are associated with anxiety, bone loss, and disturbed sleep. An excess of cortisol over DHEA can accelerate the breakdown of bone and muscle, thus potentially contributing to premature aging. Chronic stress may eventually lead to decreased cortisol production and result in fatigue symptoms. Insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and difficulty losing weight may be associated with an imbalance in the adrenal hormone ratio of cortisol to DHEAs.

We live, undeniably, in a toxic world. Pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, petrochemicals, GMO foods, polluted water, radiation and electrical pollution assault our immune systems throughout our life. Certain more vulnerable people suffer with the environmental disease multiple chemical sensitivity; also and inflammatory condition.. Dr. Dantoft clarifies the importance of anti-inflammatory agents in his article and concludes: "MCS individuals displayed a distinct systemic immune mediator profile with increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and interleukin-2 and inverse regulation of Th2 associated cytokines interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 suggestive of low-grade systemic inflammation, along with a deviating Th2-associated cytokine response not involving IgE-mediated mechanisms." Decisons, decisions. Residential design is always part education, part therapy, and part architecture. This panel will showcase the work of two designers and a builder who have climbed high on the residential decision-making tree. Architect Chris Briley will explore the challenges of two Passive House projects, in the same climate, with different clients, as he worked with each to come to different conclusions and different strategies for the same high performance target. Jesse Selman and Kent Hicks (architect and builder) will discuss the complex process of navigating the sometimes conflicting goals of high performance, thoughtful design, and the needs of a client with an existing building, a beautiful site, and multiple chemical sensitivities.
In 1974 The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company revived an ancient formula for genuine, organic milk paint. Packaged in powdered form to avoid preservatives, it is easily mixed with water before application. With virtually no odor and zero VOCs, it is widely used by people with multiple chemical sensitivities. It is available in twenty deep, rich colors that are steadfast, will not fade, and may be blended to create a wealth of other colors. It has a velvety appearance and a presence rarely found in modern, chemically based paint. ...

What do you eat every day?. Its a good question, it really is. Its a good question because when you are trying to get in shape, lose weight, increase your energy and feel younger, you want to know what works for people who have done it. It just makes sense to take advice from someone that has the results you want, right?. You see, 6 years ago, I weighed 30-40 pounds more than I do today and I was three sizes larger. Six years ago, I was sick more days than I was well, I had no energy, couldnt sleep through the night, and I was debilitated by Migraine and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Disorder. I was addicted to sugar, coffee and pity parties, because at the time…well, I felt my life sucked. [Read more…]. ...

Housing may be their most difficult challenge, a challenge greater even than for people with other disabilities…". "I believe that MCS is an important and unrecognized contributor to homelessness.
