Methods A random 80% sample of the ASSERT database was used for this analysis. ASSERT was a 24-week (wk) RCT comparing infliximab monotherapy and placebo in patients with active AS, with an open extension until 102wks with all patients on infliximab. Spinal MRIs (T1-weighted and STIR images) at baseline, 24wks and 102wks were assessed by 2 readers independently who scored each VE for the presence or absence of VEI and VEFD. Spinal X-rays (baseline and 102wks) were scored by 2 different readers independently using the mSASSS. Data were analysed at the VE level in the 24 VEs assessed by the mSASSS (anterior VEs of the cervical and lumbar spine), using a multi-level approach to adjust for within-patient correlation and MRI reader (GEE for binomial outcomes). Particular emphasis was on a sequence analysis, which aimed at the specific sequence VEI→VEFD→SYN. The following variables were considered potential covariates and adjusted for when appropriate: treatment, gender, presence of SYN/ankylosis ...

It is a long established fact that sex is an important factor that influences the transcriptional regulatory processes of an organism. However, understanding sex-based differences in gene expression has been limited because existing studies typically sequence and analyze bulk tissue from female or male individuals. Such analyses average cell-specific gene expression levels where cell-to-cell variation can easily be concealed. We therefore sought to utilize data generated by the rapidly developing single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology to explore sex dimorphism and its functional consequences at the single cell level. Our study included scRNA-seq data of ten well-defined cell types from the brain and heart of female and male young adult mice in the publicly available tissue atlas dataset, Tabula Muris. We combined standard differential expression analysis with the identification of differential distributions in single cell transcriptomes to test for sex-based gene expression differences in

Multicentre, retrospective study based on electronic records of patients seeking care during 2005 in the regions of Aragón, Baleares and Cataluña. Principal measurements: variables related to the patient (age, sex and morbidity), the health centre (accreditation, teaching activities and localization - rural/urban centre), the physician (academic training, sex and work-experience) and the dependent variable pharmacy cost. In order to avoid data collection biases, health centres were selected depending on their experience in the use of electronic medical records. Outlier patients were identified according to case-mix adjustment-based statistic criteria (those with values of studentized deleted residuals higher than 2). Log transformation of the variable pharmacy cost was carried out to reduce skewness of the distribution and make it close to normal. The explanatory power of ACG was calculated by coefficients of determination. Multilevel regression models were employed to analyse the hierarchical ...
Professor, Molecular and Cellular Physiology. Study Title: Multi-level Analysis of Mouse and Human Neurons with the 22q11.2 Deletion. The 22q11 deletion renders a large number of genes heterozygous. Although multiple systems-level experiments on mouse models of the 22q11 deletion were performed, no analyses of the effects of the 22q11 deletion on fundamental neuronal properties, especially synaptic properties, were performed. Moreover, little is known about the identity of the key genes whose heterozygous deletion drives neuronal impairments. The overall goal of the proposed project is to determine the fundamental phenotypes produced by the 22q11 deletion in neurons, and to identify the genes whose heterozygous deletion drives the development of these phenotypes. ...

The overarching aim of this paper is to evaluate socio-demographic, health and mobility-related factors correlated with health-related quality of life among people aged between 75 to 90 years old in three Swedish Municipalities. Methods: Within the SEBEM study, a cross-sectional survey using a self-administered postal questionnaire was conducted among 2398 older people aged between 75 and 90 years. Primary outcome of the study was health-related quality of life measured using the SF12 which distinguishes two dimensions of health, i.e. the Physical Composite Score (PCS) and the Mental Component Score (MCS). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the variability study outcomes. Multilevel regression models were used to investigate factors independently correlated with health, controlling for the influence of potential ...
Is motion cognition influenced by the large-scale typological patterns proposed in Talmys (2000) two-way distinction between verb-framed (V) and satellite-framed (S) languages? Previous studies investigating this question have been limited to comparing two or three languages at a time and have come to conflicting results. We present the largest cross-linguistic study on this question to date, drawing on data from nineteen genealogically diverse languages, all investigated in the same behavioral paradigm and using the same stimuli. After controlling for the different dependencies in the data by means of multilevel regression models, we find no evidence that S- vs. V-framing affects nonverbal categorization of motion events. At the same time, statistical simulations suggest that our study and previous work within the same behavioral paradigm suffer from insufficient statistical power. We discuss these findings in the light of the great variability between participants, which suggests flexibility in

Both technology and innovation are considered major contributors to the competitiveness of companies and in exploiting opportunities in the market; however, too often the people processes are not given enough attention in transformation efforts - they are viewed as HR processes and technical leaders may not see the value of examining these areas early on as accelerators for change.. The innovation culture framework presented in this class is based on three thematic elements of innovation culture in organizations: Transformational Leadership, Organizational Climate / Environment, and Organizational Practices & Processes.. By focusing on the culture within an organization and coupling with other technology and innovation management efforts, leaders will have a more holistic understanding of how to increase and sustain the innovation capabilities of their organizations.. ...

This two-day advanced multivariate statistics course provides an introduction to applied analyses of multilevel models. Students will learn how to use multilevel models for analyzing clustered data (e.g., persons nested in groups) and longitudinal data, such as flexible strategies for modeling change and individual differences in change. Multilevel models are known by many synonyms (hierarchical linear models, general linear mixed models). The defining feature of these models is their capacity to provide quantification and prediction of random variance due to multiple sampling dimensions (across occasions, persons, or groups). Multilevel models are useful in analyzing clustered data (e.g., persons nested in groups), in which one wishes to examine predictors pertaining to individuals or to groups. Multilevel models also offer many advantages for analyzing longitudinal data, such as flexible strategies for modeling change and individual differences in change, the possibility of examining time-invariant
begingroup$ @user158565 I confess I dont understand what you are trying to say, either, because I consider the deviance to be a form of residual. That suggests you might be using residual in a special or narrow way, but in what way, exactly, and to what purpose? Note, too, that the quotation in question doesnt literally mean residuals, but really is talking about how the conditional responses are modeled as independent random variables. Its last sentence clarifies this by stating that the problem is observations [not residuals] are interdependent. $\endgroup$ - whuber♦ May 3 at 14:06 ...

Real-life survey data are often unrepresentative due to selection bias and nonresponse. Classical design-based corrections rely on weighting to match the sample to the target population. Unit weights are constructed as a product of inverse probability of inclusion (selection and response) and calibration ratio factors. Low inclusion probabilities or small sample sizes can cause extreme values of weights. Volatile weights can result in unstable estimators, especially when the weights are weakly correlated with the survey outcomes. When estimating quantities more complicated than means and quantiles, such as regression coefficients, it is unclear whether one should or how to apply the weights under multiple adjustments.. Model-based approaches fit regression models conditional on all the variables that affect the probability of inclusion, but computational and modeling challenges arise because of the potential need to adjust for deep interactions of weighting variables, to select models or to ...
Multilevel modelling has rapidly become established as the appropriate tool for modelling data with complex hierarchical structures. It is important for extending our understanding of social, biological and other sciences beyond that which can be obtained through single level modelling. Multilevel modelling is now being used in Education, Medical science, Demography, Economics, Agriculture and many other areas.. The term multilevel refers to a nested membership relation among units in a system. In an education system, for example, students are members of classes, and classes are grouped within schools. When single level techniques such as multiple regression are applied to data from a structure such as this, the analysis will ignore important aspects of the data structure and the results will often be misleading.. The basic procedures for modelling purely hierarchical data have been extended to include cross-classifications and cases where lower level units belong to more than one higher level ...

Neighbourhood unemployment was used as an indicator of area deprivation in all studies. Although it was measured in essentially the same way in most countries the utility of unemployment as a marker of the area features directly relevant to health may differ between countries. We assessed the correlation coefficients between neighbourhood unemployment and other indicators of neighbourhood deprivation in all countries. Neighbourhood unemployment correlated inversely with neighbourhood income (−0.51,r,−0.77, p,0.01) in all studies with available data (all but Whitehall II) and with the percentage owner occupied dwellings (−0.43,r,−0.79, p,0.01) (available in all studies but Madrid), although the second association was not significant for Turin. Although these correlations suggest that unemployment is related to other measures of area deprivation in a similar direction in all countries, there may be differences in the country specific environmental correlates of area unemployment. Inclusion ...
BACKGROUND This study aims to suggest an approach that integrates multilevel models and eigenvector spatial filtering methods and apply it to a case study of self-rated health status in South Korea. In many previous health-related studies, multilevel models and single-level spatial regression are used separately. However, the two methods should be used in conjunction because the objectives of both approaches are important in health-related analyses. The multilevel model enables the simultaneous analysis of both individual and neighborhood factors influencing health outcomes. However, the results of conventional multilevel models are potentially misleading when spatial dependency across neighborhoods exists. Spatial dependency in health-related data indicates that health outcomes in nearby neighborhoods are more similar to each other than those in distant neighborhoods. Spatial regression models can address this problem by modeling spatial dependency. This study explores the possibility of integrating a
The purpose of this study was to identify factors affecting the uptake of MSS by Chinese pregnant women so that suitable policies can be developed to ensure MSS is equally accessible to the whole population of mainland China.. From the univariate analysis, all of the factors chosen according to Andersens behavioral model were associated with MSS utilization, although some were confounding or indirect factors. Four multilevel regression models were applied stepwise to the data, according to the flow of factors of Andersens behavioral model. Major associated factors found through the univariate analysis were included. The results of the multilevel regressions were consistent with Andersens behavioral model. All five kinds of factors (contextual, predisposing, enabling, need, and health behavior) from Andersens behavioral model were found to be associated with MSS utilization. Aside from the respondents demographic characteristics, three intermediate factors, the respondents number of ...
Objectives: To observe the relative role of individual and group-level antimicrobial selective pressure on subsequent methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolation in a university hospital. Methods: For this purpose, 18 596 patients were included in a retrospective statistical analysis, applying multilevel modelling with discrete time intervals at the lowest level. Individual-level and hospital group variables on antimicrobial exposure and MRSA colonization pressure were collected from computerized databases. Results: The simultaneous hospital group- and individual-level analysis showed individual exposure to fluoroquinolones and collective exposure to penicillins to be associated with MRSA isolation after adjustment for colonization pressure and other potential confounders. Conclusions: These results support efforts to reduce prescriptions of selected antimicrobial drug classes such as fluoroquinolones and show the added value of multilevel analysis for research on the adverse ...
Leadership and staffing are recognised as important factors for quality of care. This study examines the effects of ward leaders task- and relationship-oriented leadership styles, staffing levels, ratio of registered nurses and ratio of unlicensed staff on three independent measures of quality of care. A cross-sectional survey of forty nursing home wards throughout Norway was used to collect the data. Five sources of data were utilised: self-report questionnaires to 444 employees, interviews with and questionnaires to 13 nursing home directors and 40 ward managers, telephone interviews with 378 relatives and 900 hours of field observations. Separate multi-level analyses were conducted for quality of care assessed by relatives, staff and field observations respectively. Task-oriented leadership style had a significant positive relationship with two of the three quality of care indexes. In contrast, relationship-oriented leadership style was not significantly related to any of the indexes. The lack of

The Malagasy have been shown to be a genetically admixed population combining parental lineages with African and South East Asian ancestry. In the present paper we fit the Malagasy admixture history in a highly resolved phylogeographic framework by typing a large set of mtDNA and Y DNA markers in unrelated individuals from inland (Merina) and coastal (Antandroy, Antanosy, Antaisaka) ethnic groups. This allowed performance of a multi-level analysis in which the diversity among main ethnic divisions, lineage ancestries, and modes of inheritance could be concurrently evaluated. Admixture was confirmed to result from the encounter of African and South-East Asian people with minor recent male contributions from Europe. However, new scenarios are depicted about Malagasy admixture history. The distribution of ancestral components was ethnic- and sex-biased, with the Asian ancestry appearing more conserved in the female than in the male gene pool, and in inland than in coastal groups. A statistic based ...

Consistent associations have been observed between macro-level urban sprawl and overweight/obesity, but whether residential proximity to urban centres predicts adiposity change over time has not been established. Further, studies of local-area walkability and overweight/obesity have generated mixed results. This study examined 4-year change in adults waist circumference in relation to proximity to city centre, proximity to closest suburban centre, and local-area walkability. Data were from adult participants (n=2080) of a cohort study on chronic conditions and health risk factors in Adelaide, Australia. Baseline data were collected in 2000-03 with a follow-up in 2005-06. Multilevel regression models examined in 2015 the independent and joint associations of the three environmental measures with change in waist circumference, accounting for socio-demographic covariates. On average, waist circumference rose by 1.8 cm over approximately 4 years. Greater distance to city centre was associated with ...

Downloadable! This article argues that the effect of policy institutions on female labor market participation is mediated by reference groups surrounding individual women. Using recent data on individual women between 20 and 49 years in 22 European countries, we distinguish between two types of institutions: public childcare availability and public sector employment. We hypothesize that both institutions are conducive to womenÂs employment but that the effect differs across different social groups. More generally the analysis aims at the identification of good practices, i.e. countries that succeed in shaping women-friendly circumstances on the labor market. By means of a logistic multilevel model, we find that both public childcare and public sector employment are associated with higher female employment chances. We also find that women embedded in different reference groups behave differently on the labor market, that public childcare provision and public sector employment are helpful to raise the
From Political Psychology Ethnic Minority-Majority Asymmetry in National Attitudes around the World: A Multilevel Analysis Christian Staerkle, Jim Sidanius, Eva G. T. Green and Ludwig E. Molina August 2010 ABSTRACT Using data from the International Social Survey Programme, this research investigated asymmetric attitudes of ethnic minorities and majorities towards their country and explored the impact of human development, ethnic diversity, and social inequality as country-level moderators of national attitudes. In line with the general hypothesis of ethnic asymmetry, we found that ethnic, linguistic, and religious majorities were more identified with the nation and more strongly endorsed nationalist ideology than minorities (H1, 33 countries). Multilevel analyses revealed that this pattern of asymmetry was moderated by country-level characteristics: the difference between minorities and majorities was greatest in ethnically diverse countries and in egalitarian, low inequality contexts. We also ...

In a world that celebrates success, the idea of rewarding failure may seem counterintuitive. Failure and the learning that comes from it from it are essential ingredients of success, something that innovative organizations understand. They create environments where failure is expected and the only true failure is a failure to learn when things dont go as planned.. Throughout history, innovators and enlightened leaders have observed that failure begets success. The fastest way to succeed is to double your error rate, said Thomas J. Watson, founder of IBM, a company Fortune recently ranked one of the most innovative. Success is 99 percent failure, legendary car builder Soichiro Honda said.. I write and speak often about how organizations can create a culture of innovation. Encouraging appropriate risk-taking is an important dimension of an innovative culture and organizations struggle with how to create environments where employees can learn from failure. How can they take small, safe risks ...
I want to help make a better world. I do research and writing for a lot of classic gaming and computing articles. Part of my motivation is that these are essential elements of our culture, and they bind us together and inform the future. In a hit-driven, innovative culture where perception is reality, there are more ideas forgotten on the cutting room floor than could ever possibly be released. Many times, the ideas were ahead of their time, and so the reason for market rejection was not simply no but rather, not yet. One way to create a better future is in the past, learning through the gift of hindsight. That nonetheless requires a lot of forward and innovative thinking in its own right, and an analysis of long term patterns, to identify which forgotten and wayside ideas of our past are essentially viable regardless of their past market performance. I want to illuminate and learn from the past in order to help make a better future. I want to reconnect with myself. I was an innovator and ...

In order to take into account the complex structure of repeated measurements from different assays where different treatments are applied on the same subjects, we developed a multilevel multivariate approach combined with our PLS models to highlight the treatment effects within subject separately from the biological variation between subjects (collaboration with A/Prof. B. Liquet).. Two different frameworks are proposed:. 1. A discriminant analysis (method = splsda) enables the selection of features separating the different treatments. 2. An integrative analysis (method = spls) enables the interaction of two matched data sets and the selection of subsets of correlated variables (positively or negatively) across the samples. The approach is unsupervised: no prior knowledge about the samples groups is included.. The multilevel function first decomposes the variance in the data sets X (and Y for sPLS) and applies either sPLS-DA or sPLS on the within-subject variation matrix (see Westerhuis et ...
