ABSTRACT. The species composition and geographic distribution of ixodid ticks infesting domestic dogs owned by people in rural communities and villages in Maputo Province was established by collecting ticks from dogs at each of 27 localities spread throughout the province. Ticks were collected from a total of 132 dogs, and nine species belonging to four genera were identified. One dog was infested with six species, three with five and 13 with four species. Haemaphysalis elliptica followed by Rhipicephalus simus were present on dogs at most localities, and their geographic distribution in Maputo Province has been mapped for the first time.. Keywords: Dogs, geographic distribution, Haemaphysalis elliptica, ixodid ticks, Maputo Province, Mozambique, Rhipicephalus simus. ...

article{4ba996f2-392e-407a-a241-e6491c85d22a, abstract = {Our objectives were to compare the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in 103 women undergoing induced legal abortion (LA) and in 101 women with confirmed, recent illegal abortion (IA), in Maputo, Mozambique. For the purpose of this study, LA was considered the abortion provided in the Maputo Central Hospital with the approval of the Ministry of Health, and IA the one not provided through the approved facility, mentioned above. Women with IA were recruited in the outpatient gynaecology ward and women with LA in the emergency gynaecology ward in the Maputo Central Hospital, during the same time period. Serological tests for syphilis (rapid plasma reagin, ELISA-IgC and fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption), gonorrhoea (indirect haemagglutination) and chlamydia (microimmunofluorescence) were carried out. Direct immuno-fluorescence for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis antigen was done on endocervical smears from all ...
The Drug Resource Enhancement against AIDS and Malnutrition Program (DREAM) gathered professionals in the field of Elimination of HIV-Mother-To-Child Transmission (EMTCT) in Maputo in 2013 to discuss obstacles and solutions for the elimination of HIV vertical transmission in sub-Saharan Africa. During this workshop, the benefits of administrating combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) to HIV positive women from pregnancy throughout breastfeeding were reviewed. cART is capable of reducing vertical transmission to less than 5% at 24 months of age, as well as maternal mortality and infant mortality in both HIV infected and exposed populations to levels similar to those of uninfected individuals. The challenge for programs targeting eMTCT in developing countries is retention in care and treatment adherence. Both are intrinsically related to the model of care. The drop-out from eMTCT programs before cART initiation ranges from 33%-88% while retention rates at 18-24 months are less than 50%. Comprehensive

The border between Mozambique and Tanzania is formed by the River Rovuma. Daily pick-ups connect Moçimboa da Praia with Palma and Namiranga, the border post on the Mozambique side. The main route runs from Moçimboa da Praia (on the Mozambiquan side), via Palma (Mozambique), to Mtwara (on the Tanzanian side) and vice versa. It is recommended to take 2 days over this trip due to the low quality of the roads on the Mozambique side, and the low level of traffic. When coming from Tanzania, lifts depart from Mtwara and Kilambo to the Rovuma river. Kilambo is a small place with one road running through it, so lifts should be easy to find. Mtwara is much larger however, so ask the locals where and when lifts leave from. When coming from Mozambique, your lift to the river will normally start from either Palma (more likely), or - if youre lucky - Moçimboa da Praia and go to the border post at Namiranga. It will generally wait for you to have your passport stamped at the border post (a mud hut in ...

Brasilia, 10 Sept - The Mozambican capital has been chosen as the location of the first foreign office of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), as part of a health cooperation package announced last Thursday by President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva.. During a meeting with Mozambican President Armando Guebuza, Lula also announced plans to build in Maputo a factory for medicine meant for HIV/AIDS patients.. The Brazilian president highlighted the large number of businesseople in the visiting delegation and recalled Brazils participation in the Mozambican economy, particularly in Vale do Rio Doce, where the exploitation of coal reserves began this year.. "We hope this encourages a new cycle of infrastructure and development investments," said Lula. Guebuza, who succeeded Joaquim Chissano in 2005, replied by stressing the importance of the announced health initiatives and the "great expectations" regarding the medicine factory. The Mozambican president showed interest in cooperation in the power ...

Another area in which Beijings rising influence is clearly visible is in the provision of soft loans for major infrastructure projects. In 2006, China granted Mozambique a US$2.3 billion loan for the construction of a mega dam in Mphanda Nkuwu in central Mozambique. It was Mozambiques single biggest foreign loan to date and perhaps the one with the easiest repayment terms. China has expressed its interest in funding a further 10 medium to small dams throughout the country. Further loans were given earlier this year, including a US$60 million loan from Chinas state-owned Exibank and a preferential line of credited of US$240 million for infrastructure projects granted by the central government ...

Special services within public hospitals are becoming increasingly common in low and middle income countries with the stated objective of providing higher comfort services to affluent customers and generating resources for under funded hospitals. In the present study expenditures, outputs and costs are analysed for the Maputo Central Hospital and its Special Clinic with the objective of identifying net resource flows between a system operating two-tier charging, and, ultimately, understanding whether public hospitals can somehow benefit from running Special Clinic operations. A combination of step-down and bottom-up costing strategies were used to calculate recurrent as well as capital expenses, apportion them to identified cost centres and link costs to selected output measures. The results show that cost differences between main hospital and clinic are marked and significant, with the Special Clinics cost per patient and cost per outpatient visit respectively over four times and over thirteen times

MAPUTO, Mozambique (CNN) -- Tropical depression Eline continued to move toward Mozambique on Sunday, bringing torrential rains and gusting winds to a nation already ravaged by its worst flooding in 30 years. The storm is expected to slam the central coast of this southeastern African nation late Sunday, according to the countrys National Meteorology Institute. Although the institute has downgraded the storm from a cyclone to a tropical depression, officials worry that the heavy rain and winds of up to 34 mph (55 km/h) could impede efforts to get help to stranded residents. Even airlifts -- which organizations are using to get supplies to people penned in by water-logged roads -- can be perilous. A Mozambican airplane, flying medicine to the Palmeira region, crashed Saturday, injuring several people. The cause of the crash is unknown. Still, the aid operations continue. The international group Medicins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders) and a number of government agencies are helping. One ...

Pine and eucalyptus planting companies are advancing on land belonging to peasant family communities in several provinces in northern Mozambique. This is a relatively recent process, encouraged by the Mozambique Government that sees monoculture tree plantations as a tool to promote development and progress in the more remote regions such as the province of Niassa.. The main incentives for monoculture tree plantations are focussed on this province. Niassa is the province farthest away from the capital city Maputo. It is the largest of the countrys ten provinces, the least populated and, what is very important for the companies, the province covers much flat and fertile land.. The companies have been granted concessions by the countrys central Government that allow approximately 250,000 hectares to be planted over a 50-year period. Presently five companies are working in the region with a total of 11,000 hectares of plantations and the forecast is to expand and cover approximately 100,000 ...
Cassava is the principal starch in Mozambique, at 30 percent of calories. It can be stored unharvested up to 30 months, but fresh cassava lasts only 3 days once harvested. Most processing in Mozambique is artisanal, to eliminate cyanogenic glycosides in the 90 percent of production from pest resistant bitter varieties. Only 6 percent of production in 2011 was used commercially for non-food, two-thirds for feed and one-third for starch. Low levels of productivity for cassava compared to elsewhere and poor transportation are the main barriers to the development of a processing industry. Unit costs of production range from USD 0.09 to USD 0.30 U.S. cents per kg. Producers would need to achieve 15 tons/hectare to be commercially viable, compared to average yields between 5 and 9 tons/hectare in Mozambique. Actions recommended include: adoption of a "Master Plan "; time-limited subsidies for industrial High Quality Cassava Flour, ethanol, and starch; a network of service providers to operate in ...

Mozambiques performance under the authorities program during the first three quarters of 2003 continued to be satisfactory. The discussions focused on the macroeconomic policies for 2004-06 and the governments plans to address pending structural reforms to broaden and sustain growth and further reduce poverty. Discussions on structural issues concentrated on the authorities plans to remove a number of obstacles to private sector development. A strengthened monetary and exchange rate management will be essential in Mozambique, particularly in view of the high degree of dollarization.
In May, Shell revealed it has been in talks with Anadarko about acquiring a stake in its Mozambique fields, but had pulled back because the asking price was too high. Mr. Guebuza said Thursday that he wants Mozambiques first LNG exports to start shipping in 2018, an ambitious deadline in a country that has no established oil and gas industry and limited infrastructure. Shells floating LNG vessels produce, liquefy and transfer gas to tankers for export, removing the need for a costly and complex onshore terminal. The technology is being used on a project in Australia with a similar five-year development schedule and could be one solution for Mozambique, said Mr. Steenson. Shell took the decision to deploy a $10 billion floating LNG vessel on Australias Prelude field in 2011 and it is due to start operating late in 2016 or early in 2017, said Mr. Steenson. The Prelude vessel, the first of its kind in the world, will produce around 5.3 million tpy of LNG and condensate, he said. At present, the ...
Analyses of Hurricane Idais recent passage through Mozambique indicate a strong relationship between this devastating hurricane and extreme weather events. It is a dire warning that the problem of global warming must be resolved urgently. Unfortunately, that is not expected to happen. Governments of the most industrialized countries, pressured by their multinational corporations and financial institutions-such as the World Bank-are promoting so-called "offset mechanisms" in response to the ongoing destruction and environmental contamination.. One of the best-known offset mechanisms is REDD, which stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (1). Instead of reducing the carbon dioxide emissions from the burning of oil, gas and coal-which is the main case of global warming-this mechanism allows polluting industries to "offset" these emissions from their own countries in another place, for example in Mozambique.. The government of Mozambique is committed to the REDD ...

The Grande Hotel Beira was a luxury hotel in Beira, Mozambique. It was opened in 1954 and operated until 1963, when it was closed due to lack of guests. The building was used as a military base in the Mozambican Civil War, and it is currently home to over 3500 squatters. In 1932, the urban plan of Ponta Gêa was designed by the architect brothers Rebelo de Andrade, and the plan included a hotel with an Olympic swimming pool in a spot overlooking the Indian Ocean, the mouth of the Buzi River and the sea harbour of Beira. Architect José Porto of the Gabinete de Urbanização Colonial produced the original concept design for the hotel; and in 1953, the Companhia de Moçambique commissioned architect Fransico de Castro to develop the original design and the final detailing. At the time, the Companhia de Moçambique had the concession to exploit the area now known as the provinces of Manica and Sofala. When the concession ended in 1942, the Companhia still owned local businesses and continued to ...

Primary outcomes tested were improved retention in ART care and uptake of all PMTCT services ...
Although CBD of injectable contraceptives is no longer a novel idea in sub-Saharan Africa, the process of translating community-based health care policies into effective programs is not always straightforward. For example, policy makers in Mozambique were supportive of CBD, but there was limited country-specific experience and no country-level data to support the policy. Consequently, this study generated evidence to support CBD of DMPA in northern Mozambique and found that provision of injectable contraceptives by APEs and TBAs was feasible, safe, effective, and acceptable among women. Very few morbidities at the injection site and no deaths were reported. The study demonstrated that APEs and TBAs can improve contraceptive access and use in rural Mozambican communities; in fact, the majority of women in the study started using contraception for the first time during the study period, and satisfaction with community-based providers was high and improved over the entire study ...

South African President Thabo Mbeki, one of NEPADs architects, emphasizes that the two countries, despite resource constraints, face a common challenge to attain development and prosperity for their citizens. "Through NEPAD," Mr. Mbeki asserts, "we are charting a new path for the regeneration of our continent, to ensure that we harness our skills, expertise, talents, resources and natural riches to bring a better life to all Africans.". The partnership comes at an important phase in Mozambiques history. A 16-year civil war turned the beautiful country into one of the poorest nations in the world. But since the war ended in 1992, Mozambique has had one of the worlds most rapidly growing economies, reports the African Economic Outlook 2005, an annual publication of the ADB and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Reconstruction aid and foreign investment in natural resource-based projects are driving the growth.. Overall, South Africa has invested about $4 bn in ...

At independence in 1975, Mozambique was one of the world´s poorest countries. Socialist mismanagement and a brutal civil war from 1977-92 exacerbated the situation. In 1987, the government embarked on a series of macroeconomic reforms designed to stabilize the economy. These steps, combined with donor assistance and with political stability since the multi-party elections in 1994, have led to dramatic improvements in the country´s growth rate. Inflation was reduced to single digits during the late 1990s although it returned to double digits in 2000-03. Fiscal reforms, including the introduction of a value-added tax and reform of the customs service, have improved the government´s revenue collection abilities. In spite of these gains, Mozambique remains dependent upon foreign assistance for much of its annual budget, and the majority of the population remains below the poverty line. Subsistence agriculture continues to employ the vast majority of the country´s work force. A substantial trade ...

Downloadable! While economic growth generally reduces income poverty, there are pronounced differences in the strength of this relationship across countries. Typical explanations for this variation include measurement errors in growth-poverty accounting and countries different compositions of economic growth. We explore the additional influence of economic structure in determining a countrys growth-poverty relationship and performance. Using multiplier and structural path analysis, we compare the experiences of Mozambique and Vietnam-two countries with similar levels and compositions of economic growth but divergent poverty outcomes. We find that the structure of the Vietnamese economy more naturally lends itself to generating broad-based growth. A given agricultural demand expansion in Mozambique will, ceteris paribus, achieve much less rural income growth than in Vietnam. Inadequate education, trade and transport systems are found to be more severe structural constraints to poverty reduction in
