Despite the demonstrated role of human Papillomavirus (HPV) in the etiology of cervical cancer and the strong evidence suggesting the importance of HPV in the development of oropharyngeal cancer, several aspects of the interrelationship between HPV infection in both body sites remain unknown, specifically in female human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive (HIV+) patients. We aimed to assess the prevalence, distribution, and concordance of cervical and oral HPV in HIV+ women and matched HIV-negative (HIV-) controls in Brazil. Cervical and endocervical samples for cytological screening and HPV detection and oral samples were collected from 115 HIV+ women using highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and 139 HIV-matched controls (HIV-) in Maringá City, Brazil. Risk factors were assessed using a standardized questionnaire, and the data regarding HIV infection were obtained from the patients medical records. HPV detection and typing were performed using the Kit Multiplex XGEN Multi HPV Chip HS12.

Can Dentist Prescribe Antibiotics - Dentist In Spring Texas. Dentists do prescribe antibiotics for treatment purposes as well as prevention of infections. Use of systemic antibiotics is limited in dentistry because most dental and periodontal infections are best treated using surgical procedures and oral hygiene care. Dentists mainly prescribe antibiotics to curb the rising number of oral conditions mainly orofacial infections. Most orofacial infections emanate from odontogenic infections. For this reason, prescribing antibiotics has become an essential practice in the field. According to recent statistics, antibiotics account for the vast number of medicines prescribed by dentists. These include clindamycin, tetracyclines, beta-lactams, metronidazole, and macrolides.. An antibiotic prescription is sometimes associated with unfavorable side effects such as fatal anaphylactic shock, developed resistance to antibiotics and gastrointestinal disturbances. When the bodys immune resistance is very weak, it becomes easy to develop infections including angular cheilitis. But again, it doesnt mean that just because you have inflammation on the corners of your mouth, youre already infected with HIV. It can be caused by many other factors. If it would make you feel better, have yourself tested for HIV to have that peace of mind youre looking for. Once you find out that its not the cause of your angular cheilitis, move on and find out what truly is causing it so you can get the suitable proper treatment ...

Orofacial granulomatosis is a chronic granulomatous condition characterized by relapsing and remitting lip swelling and oral involvement that may include deep ulcers, tags and cobblestone formation. It occurs as an independent entity but also in conjunction with systemic diseases such as tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and Crohns disease. To highlight the importance of thorough examination to rule out systemic disease, we present two childhood cases of orofacial granulomatosis, one of which was associated to Crohns disease ...

The prevalence of oral HPV infection among men in the HITCH cohort was 7.2%. To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate higher oral HPV prevalence among men whose female partner had a prevalent genital or oral HPV infection suggesting that transmission may occur through oral or genital routes. Prevalence was also significantly higher among men who had ever smoked, had a high number of lifetime sex partners, or were in nonmonogamous relationships. Our results are largely consistent with previous studies that have found male sex, smoking, and sexual behaviors to be the most significant risk factors for oral HPV infection (2-4, 6, 7, 11).. We found that overall prevalence of oral HPV infection was higher among ever smokers. Others have found that current smoking increases the risk for both prevalent and incident HPV infection (2, 4, 7). Among men in the HPV Infection in Men (HIM) cohort study, the odds of a prevalent infection were increased among current smokers as was the risk of ...

According to Gillison, most sexually active people-both men and women-contract HPV at some point in their lives. Why, she wondered, are the rates of HPV-positive head and neck cancer increasing, and why are they higher in men?. To answer these questions, Gillison examined the prevalence of oral HPV infection within the United States as part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.. She found that around seven percent of the population had an oral HPV infection, and men were three to five times more likely to have one than women. The key difference was in the relationship between the number of sexual partners and oral HPV infection. In men, the prevalence of oral HPV increases with each additional sexual partner until it reaches a plateau at 30 partners. In women, this plateau arrives more quickly, after only three sexual partners. Gillison attributes the overall rise in HPV-related cancers to the sexual revolution, which made it socially acceptable for people to have more ...

Although introduction of Highly-Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) has reduced the frequency of many secondary infections in HIV disease, there has been an increase in the occurrence of oral warts. It has also been suggested that there is a link of increased occurrence of oral warts and HAART. Based on a 2001 retrospective study on 1280 HIV-infected patients, it was been reported that the prevalence of oral warts was highest among the patients who were being treated with HAART (23%) compared to those without medication (5%) and those who were being treated with other antiretroviral therapy (15%). While HPV infection has been identified as the most significant risk factor in the development of malignant anogenital lesions, the development of malignant oral lesions in association with HPV infection has not been demonstrated consistently. Even though the threat of malignancy has not been conclusively established, oral warts do cause a significant reduction in quality of life due to their ...
