By Nathan Endres, MD. Rock climbing has become increasingly popular as both a recreational activity and a competitive sport. Rock climbing is a general term that includes multiple forms of climbing- indoor climbing, sport climbing, bouldering, etc. There have been a number of studies performed, which describe rock climbing injuries, but these studies are hard to compare because they include different forms of climbing, different groups of climbers (experts vs. recreational climbers) and different types of injuries (only traumatic injuries presenting to an emergency department vs. all types of injuries). Despite these differences, some interesting information and general trends can be found that will hopefully be helpful to the climbing community here in Vermont.. - Rock climbing injuries are common. Somewhere between fifty and eighty percent of rock climbers report a climbing related injury annually.. - Overuse injuries are more common than acute injuries and most commonly affect the upper ...

The purpose of this study was to measure oxygen uptake and energy expenditure in children during rock climbing activity. 29 children (age = 10.9 ± 1.7 yr) participated in the study. A commercially available rock climbing structure with ample features for submaximal effort climbing provided continuous terrain. Participants were instructed to climb at a comfortable pace. Following an initial 5-min rest, each child climbed one sustained 5-min bout followed by 5-min sitting recovery for a total of 10 min (SUS). This was immediately followed by five 1-min climbing + 1-min recovery intervals for a second total of 10 min (INT). Expired air was analyzed continuously. Energy expenditure (EE) was determined via the Weir method for 10-s intervals throughout the full protocol. The total energy expenditure in kilocalories during the 10-min SUS period was 34.3 ± 11.3 kcal. Energy expenditure during the 10-min INT period averaged 39.3 ± 13.1 kcal and was significantly higher than during SUS (p , .05). The ...

Mountaineering is one of the finest outdoor pursuits one can take part in. It can also be the most dangerous. Hazards include rock falls, avalanches, weather, falls, illness, but despite these dangers people have been climbing mountains for thousands of years. Mountains draw climbers who have a love of nature and possess an adventurous spirit. Being in the mountains you experience the raw beauty of Mother Nature and understand how insignificant you really are in the world. George Mallory is famously quoted as having replied to the question Why do you want to climb Mount Everest? with the retort: Because its there.

There are things that stink to high heaven - quite literally. For example, if up to 1000 climbers, high altitude porters, cooks, kitchen helpers and other staff relieve themselves for two months during the spring season in the base camp on the Nepalese south side of Mount Everest. The number of 12,000 kilograms of faeces has been reported for years, which seems to me rather low. The removal of the human waste from Everest Base Camp has been regulated for a long time, in contrast to the faecal problem in the high camps. The excrements from the toilet tents of the expeditions are collected in barrels and carried downwards by so-called "shit porters" - until 2014 without exception to Gorak Shep, the next small settlement, located about five kilometers from the base camp, now also further down the valley. There the faeces have been tipped into pits thus posing a great danger to the drinking water. The International Climbing and Moutaineering Association (UIAA) has now awarded an environmental ...

Book description. In Continental Divide, Maurice Isserman tells the history of American mountaineering through four centuries of landmark climbs and first ascents. Mountains were originally seen as obstacles to civilization; over time they came to be viewed as places of redemption and renewal. The White Mountains stirred the transcendentalists; the Rockies and Sierras pulled explorers westward toward Manifest Destiny; Yosemite inspired the early environmental conservationists.Climbing began in North America as a pursuit for lone eccentrics but grew to become a mass-participation sport. Beginning with Darby Field in 1642, the first person to climb a mountain in North America, Isserman describes the exploration and ...
