Almost 9 percent of low-income mothers with young children experienced a major depressive episode in the past year. Even though depression is one of the most treatable mental illnesses, more than one-third of these women received no treatment. Untreated parental depression poses risks for childrens cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral development. It also raises the
We evaluated the state of health of the mother and child at birth, and the probability of the diagnosis of cancelation in the child at the end of the second year of life. The sample consisted of 100 mother-child dyads. The complex assessment of the childrens health status was based on the individual medical records. Mothers filled the questionnaire evaluating the mothers relation to her child during the first 2 years of life, and the questionnaire aimed at assessing the emotional intelligence level. Almost all the children at birth have one or the other diagnosis. There is a positive connection between the number of the diagnoses in the first- and second-year-old children during their stay in the maternity ward and perinatal pathology factors of the mother. But by the end of the second year of life in 60% of the children, these diagnoses were canceled. The healthier the mother, the more positive the prognosis with regard to the childs health within the first 2 years of living is. Positive prognosis
Together, these observational analyses show that many of the mothers in this sample did not employ feeding practices consistent with current recommendations for the feeding of young children [8-11], including the recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics [16]. Rather than providing children with food and then allowing them to decide what and how much to eat, a significant portion of the mothers in this sample spent considerable time encouraging their children to eat-often in spite of their insistence that they were finished (in data not presented here, 84% of the children indicated that they wanted to stop eating at some point during the mealtime observations-often multiple times). Mothers talked little about the food and its characteristics, rarely referred to feelings of hunger and fullness, and focused more on table manners than on teaching children eating skills. In trying to influence child behavior, mothers relied primarily on unelaborated commands and rarely used instruction, ...

Each Mothers Day marks another year that I ache for her. As usual, I think How will I make it through this Mothers Day? Every year the memory of my mother and the legacy she left will get me through it. On her passing, my mother left me a silver locket given to her by her mother. It says, A mothers love is the heart of a happy home. Every Mothers Day, as I thank God for my two beautiful children, I wear that locket in my mothers honor, and I pray I am the kind of selfless mother that she was. There is comfort in knowing my mother still lives at home in my heart. She lives in me and in my two beautiful children. My son, daughter, and I, are a heroines legacy ...
More expectant mothers and their unborn children are at risk of long-term health issues because of obesity, according to new data released today by Medibank.. The Medibank Better Health Index data revealed that 59.6 per cent[1] of expecting mothers are overweight or obese - 10 per cent more than in 2008[2] (49 per cent).. "We are seeing rising levels of obesity at a national level, and its even more alarming that this trend is consistent among expectant mothers," Medibank Medical Director, Dr Kevin Cheng said.. "Obesity can cause complications for both mother and infant during pregnancy, labour and after the birth, and can put both mother and child at higher risk of developing health issues such as type 2 diabetes later in life.". Medibank member data also shows the number of births where gestational diabetes was recorded has doubled between 2008 and 2015.. "While this data could be influenced by changes in reporting patterns, increasing maternal age and obesity trends over time are certainly ...
The study explores the choices made by mothers in rural Eastern Cape about healthcare services for their children when they develop diarrheal diseases, identifying patterns in mothers health-seeking behaviour for their children and the reasons behind their choices. The study reveals that: beliefs about the causative agents of diarrhoea and traditional medicine and the observed effects of traditional medicine are central to the decision-making process of the mothers of children suffering from diarrhoea; mixed healthcare (both traditional and modern healthcare) is common in the area; medical technologies are seen as a draw card to encourage people to attend modern facilities however, there is often an absence of medical knowledge about the rationale for the use of modern medicine; some harmful substances, such as, but not limited to, detergents (for their cleansing properties), are used as ingredients in some traditional practitioner treatments; social pressure does not play a prominent role in ...
All mothers in this study initially chose to breastfeed rather than replacement feed their infants. Several expressed the sentiment that "breast milk is best for the baby". For two mothers who were unable to breastfeed because of breast health problems and a perception of insufficient milk, replacement feeding was understood as a less than ideal way to feed their infants in the early months of life.. Many mothers in interviews and focus groups emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. One participant described the "naturalness" of exclusive breastfeeding: "That is how it is supposed to be. Formula milk is not very good for the baby until six months, when you can even give the baby porridge and other things" (Prisca, Interview 3). Most mothers responded that they chose to exclusively breastfeed, because "thats the advice they give to HIV positive women". Despite this overwhelming support for exclusive breastfeeding, most mothers when probed reported ...
Worldwide, close to half the adults living with HIV are women and a large proportion of these women are of child-bearing age. Whereas anyone living with HIV faces the physical challenges of living with a chronic disease, as well as the material and social impact of the stigma associated with the disease, mothers living with HIV must also meet the demands of childrearing while mitigating the negative impact of the disease upon their family. Mothers with HIV report that this is their greatest source of stress. Moreover, children of these mothers, growing up with a parent with a chronic, stigmatized, and often fatal disease, are considered a high-risk group. The IMAGE intervention was designed to improve parenting and self-care skills in mothers with HIV in order to improve the mothers physical and mental health as well as the childs mental health and behavioral adjustment ...
The Importance Of Knowledge For Diarrhoea Drug Babies For a Mother - Providing basic knowledge to a mother about diarrhea drugs for babies is an important thing to do. How can not this diarrhea or diarrhea disease for adults is not too dangerous and life-threatening, but if this happens to a baby can turn into a dangerous threat. Diarrhea experienced in infants is very likely to make them experience fluid shortage (dehydration). This condition of dehydration is feared would threaten the life of a baby if the handling is given too late. Although anecdotal reports suggest that the use of BLW is increasing, fewer than half of the healthcare professionals in the current study had heard about this approach. Those who were aware of BLW had limited knowledge of the details and were not aware of all the practices promoted as part of BLW.4 ,5 Healthcare professionals suggested potential benefits of BLW (greater opportunity for shared family meal times, fewer mealtime battles, healthier eating behaviours, greater convenience and possible developmental advantages) but most felt reluctant to recommend it because of their concern about the potential increased risk of choking. Most healthcare professionals had not seen BLW in action and therefore had difficulty understanding how a 6-month-old infant could possess the mastication and coordination skills needed to safely manage whole pieces of food.. Overall, mothers reported that using BLW had been a positive experience, that they recommended it to other mothers, and would follow it again if ...

Alexis had her follow up with the surgeon yesterday.. We discussed the next step and I explained to him that I would love to have both procedures done prior to March. He took a look at Alexis and seen how well she was doing and said that could 100% be done. He said if all went well, he would be comfortable completing her j-pouch by the end of the year! I wish we could finish the process with just one more procedure, but I know the 3 step will ensure that everything is healed and working correctly before we take the big step into connecting everything. I have no plans on rushing her, and will encourage her to let me know when SHE is ready. The surgeon said we could be back in as early as mid September. Not sure if I am 100% comfortable with going in that soon since Alexis will be starting Kindergarten at the end of this month ...

The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP), a home visiting program for families beginning in pregnancy and continuing through child age 2 years, focuses on low-income mothers bearing their first children. The nurses aim to improve the outcomes of pregnancy, child health and development, and maternal life-course by helping mothers improve their prenatal health, by supporting parents early care of their children, and by supporting mothers with subsequent pregnancy planning, education, and work in ways that are consistent with parents values and aspirations. Nurses address social and material conditions in the home that support or undermine mothers and childrens health and coordinate their work with office-based staff.1. The NFP is based on 3 decades of randomized controlled trials, with consistent and enduring effects on maternal and child health.2-7 Families in the control groups of these trials were provided free transportation for prenatal and well-child care and referral of children with ...
This was a survey research whose purpose was to investigate the weaning knowledge, attitudes and practices among mothers with infants in Makuyu Division, Maragua District. The major objectives of this study were to (1) determine the level of weaning knowledge among mothers with infants aged birth to 12 months. (2) Investigate the attitudes of mothers towards the weaning process (3) Investigate the weaning practices that mothers carry out. (4) Investigate the cultural beliefs and traditions influencing the weaning process. The data for this study was collected using an interview schedule, which was administered by the researcher to a sample of 160 mothers with infants from Makuyu Division. A sample size of 160 was adequate because this represented almost 10% of the sample frame. In addition, the method of data collection is time consuming and is used in obtaining in-depth information. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and descriptive statistics ...

The overall aim was to describe and compare well-being, social life, and quality care among parents of children with cancer with respect to mothers versus fathers and whether the children were on versus. off treatment. The Life Situation Scale for Parents (LSS-P) was answered by 320 parents, comprising 85 mothers and 71 fathers of children on treatment, and 93 mothers and 71 fathers of children off treatment. The results show that the well-being of parents of children with cancer is affected by their childs situation, and that they experience such things as economic strain and a sense of being dependent on the care provided, especially during the childs treatment phase. Mothers whose children are receiving treatment see their life situation as less satisfying, and report being sadder and having lower self-esteem.. ...

International Journal of Methods in Psychiatric Research. ISSN 1049-8931. 10(1), s 11- 22 Vis sammendrag This paper examines pattern of agreement among different informants within the same family in order to determine the effects of maternal distress on the ratings of mothers and fathers. Mothers, fathers and children from a community cohort of 216 families with 13 to 15 year olds reported childrens difficulties and strenghts measured by the Rutter Revised Scale. The absolute scores on the childrens ratings were higher than those of the fathers and mothers. The odds ratios for agreements between fathers and children ranged between 1.70 and 4.01 and for mother-child agreement between 0.83 to 3.40. There were no significant differences between the mothers and fathers in the extent of their agreement with their children. When mothers ...

Maybe moms are taking on more responsibilities -- including cooking the food for the kids, with these high-fat choices," speculates study author Jerica Berge, Ph.D. "In parenting, there are conflicting demands and tradeoffs. It could [also] be theyre too tired at the end of the day and might not want to go to the gym.". The researchers looked at data from Project EAT (Eating and Activity in Teens and young adults), which followed participants over an 11-year period, from 1998 to 2009. Study participants listed their height and weight, and answered a questionnaire on food intake and exercise.. The fact that young mothers also consumed a similar amount of healthy food as women who werent mothers could suggest that they are trying to be good role models for their children, Berge says. Their use of higher-fat foods may stem from having less time to cook.. ...

During pregnancy mothers have to fulfill the tremendous physiological needs to support their own immune status as well as that of their babies. Accordingly, it appears highly valuable to provide mothers with a nutritional supplement during pregnancy and lactation to promote the immune development in newborns, thus reinforcing the infants defenses.. In that respect, an appropriate maternal diet must provide sufficient energy and nutrients to meet the mothers usual requirements and promote health status, as well as the needs of the growing fetus and beyond for the neonate.. Key organogenesis steps take place during fetal life and many functional features of the immune system are already coded in the genetic asset of the individual. However, at birth the immune system remains fairly immature. An epigenetic, postnatal instruction seems to be extremely important for the maturation of the immune system allowing its full functionality.. The cross-talk between the mother and her baby is, indeed, ...

Children of older mothers are healthier, taller and obtain more education than the children of younger mothers. The reason is that in industrialized countries educational opportunities are increasing, and people are getting healthier by the year. In other words, it pays off to be born later.. Rostock, Germany. Most previous research suggests that the older women are when they give birth, the greater the health risks are for their children. Childbearing at older ages is understood to increase the risk of negative pregnancy outcomes such as Down syndrome, as well as increase the risk that the children will develop Alzheimers disease, hypertension, and diabetes later in life.. However, despite the risks associated with delaying childbearing, children may also benefit from mothers delaying childbearing to older ages. These are the findings from a new study conducted by Mikko Myrskylä, the director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR),) and his colleague Kieron Barclay at ...

The politician who naïvely assumes that motherhood, like apple pie, is still a safe topic quickly learns otherwise. The topic was safe only so long as people took the centuries-old view of self-sacrificing motherhood for granted. This view rested on mankinds assumption that women were designed by nature to be mothers and that they instinctively want to rear every baby they bear. Self-sacrificing motherhood was what women were for, and women in many societies have believed this was their destiny. Overlooked was the huge stake that everyone has in motherhood. Our sense of self, pride, vulnerability, propriety, and job security, our life-long preconceptions and anxieties, our peace of mind, not to mention our toehold on posterity all of these depend on what our own mothers, wives, lovers, daughters, and female colleagues do or are expected by others to do. This is why a politician can lose votes for encouraging mothers to stay home, as well as for suggesting they return to work; for pointing out ...

He never really even had the opportunity to have a serious relationship with a woman because Of the control my mother possessed over him. My mother had the same control over my daughter. We achieved a pleasing overall retention rate of 78% at infant age two years. This is comparable to the retention rate of 75% at two years of age recently reported for another Australian RCT of an obesity prevention intervention commencing in infancy. [21] A recent pilot study [22] examining an early feeding intervention with first-time mothers (n=160) reported 69% retention at age 12-months. In these studies the intervention was delivered via six and two home visits respectively and as such had much lower participant burden than NOURISH. The NOURISH retention rate is consistent with other longitudinal nutrition studies such as the dietary intake and anthropometric sub-studies of the well-regarded ALSPAC which had 5-6 year retention rates of 54% [23] and 64% [24]. Consistent with the pattern of selection bias, there was evidence of attrition (retention) bias in both maternal age and education. The potential impact of this bias on outcomes will be considered through planned comprehensive process ...
My dad works a hard and difficult job with terrible hours because he feels its his calling. Even when its very difficult, theres a certain joy in it for him, in the miracle, as Im sure you all understand. His partners are also loving parents with the same kinds of challenges of having families and careers--and all but two of the six others are women, a mother/doctor group may be interested to hear. However, I also realize that my dad works so hard also because...he loves us. Not only is he giving other people the chance to have the wonders he has, but the hard work he does makes sure that my mother can care for us and her slowly dying mother with Alzheimers, despite those difficulties (our other grandma also lives with us, but is perfectly sound of mind, if not of eyesight). He keeps food on our table so, though things with insurance companies have made things more difficult over the years, we have never worried about food as many Americans now do--including ones nearby, ones in my school, ...

ABSTRACT. Statistics show that breastfeeding prevalence for Sweden has fallen since the mid 90´s. Studies show that breastfeeding offers health benefits to both mother and child and that the mothers belief and confidence in their ability to breastfeed is a key factor to having a positive breastfeeding outcome. In 2010, Amningshjälpen in collaboration with Sensus studieförbund, started a nursing course, for mothers-to-be, who wished to breastfeed their babies and its aim was to prepare them for a successful and enjoyable experience.. Objective: To examine whether a preparatory breastfeeding course can affect mothers confidence in their ability to breastfeed and if that ability can affect the breastfeeding outcome when the child reaches four months. A further aim is to investigate the experience of perceived problems surrounding breastfeeding and what affect these might have on the mothers confidence in breastfeeding when the child reaches four months.. Design/Methods: A quantitative ...
The Believe Plate: This particular charm makes me tear up to tell its story. I was very close to my Great Grandmother, and considered her my other mother. She was always there for me, and knew just what to say or do to fix any crisis I thought I was having. She was my rock for 15 years...and then her health and her mind started to go. Less than a year later, she was gone to the Summerland. Her mind was the worst in those last few months, when she didnt know who anyone was, or where she was. To see my other mother, confused and unable to care for herself, was heartbreaking. Many times, she had no idea who I was..and often confused me for a cousin, or a niece. The day before she passed, I came to see her. She was sitting up, bright and alert, and seemed to be her old self again. We relived some of our favorite memories, and she told me my favorite stories, while she brushed my hair... like she did when I was little. After a couple of hours, I had to leave...and she had me set down on her bed. She ...

Although these early findings require replication with a larger and more representative sample, they raise intriguing questions about the interaction between mother and child (or parent and child, since fathers are also the focus of study). The intense sensory-tactile stimulation of a baby may trigger the adult brain to grow in key areas, allowing mothers, in this case, to "orchestrate a new and increased repertoire of complex interactive behaviors with infants," the authors wrote. Expansion in the brains "motivation" area in particular could lead to more nurturing, which would help babies survive and thrive physically, emotionally and cognitively ...
This one is at least amusing. Its like saying that English "momma" must be borrowed from Latin "mamma". Why should the everyday usage be derived from a rather literary coinage?. Such a suggestion is especially strange in the proximity of (c) donates a fertilized egg [rather, an egg for fertilization -- these are two different things] , or (d) donates a body cell which has resulted in a clone. If a person can be validly called a mother without having ever been pregnant, why should calling a pregnant woman a mother be an exception that needs to be explained away by going to such great lengths? A pregnant woman is still "mothering" her child long after a "c)" or "d)" mother has parted ways with it. Theres nothing outlandish about this usage. 176.221.124.207 22:11, 2 April 2016 (UTC). ...
For all of the mothers who have lost a child, my thoughts are with you this Mothers Day weekend. This can be a painful holiday for a mother who has lost a child. I wish there could be some way to make it easier.
S~ Today we honor our mothers. As I sit here, while Teresa and Clare are still sleeping, and Jamie is having his breakfast, I am in awe of the mother my wife has become. Ten years ago, when I was in college, I met someone who took my breath away. She was so full of energy and character, it didnt take me long to fall in love with her. Yet, when we were crazy kids in college, no real talk of spending our lives together, I had no idea the blessing I was receiving. All I knew was that this girl I was dating was a lot of fun, and I was always happier when I was with her, so I married her. You have no way of knowing the woman you marry, what kind of mother she would turn out to be. Teresa has surprised me in so many ways, and I am so thankful to have someone who is so strong in my life. This past year, with all that we have gone through, God has shown me that my wife is a rare treasure. She has juggled numerous doctors appointments with spending quality time with Jamie; she has spent twelve days in ...
I found this website very helpful in planning my costume; even though I wasnt interested in screen accuracy, I did still want it to be recognizable as Mother Gothel. It was pretty easy to sew up the body of the dress from my knit block (I just extended the side seams down and out to make a full skirt), but figuring out the sleeves took some doing. The problem with making costumes based on animated designs is that animators dont always consider things like, oh, seams have to go somewhere, and fabric needs to be cut on some kind of grain to get a certain drape. Mother Gothels sleeves are very fitted at the top, then they suddenly bell out around the elbow to make that trumpet shape. Theres just the one underarm seam and thats it! It took me about eight tries to get the sleeve shape more or less right (a lot of other costumes Ive seen have the fullest part of the sleeve hanging from the wrong place, or the sleeves are full all the way through), but thank goodness I had plenty of (free) ...

A few weeks pass, and then one day Mameha tells Sayuri that the time has finally come for her to collect her winnings from her agreement with Mother. Mameha says shes already waited long enough to collect them. Several days later, Mother, Mameha, and Sayuri meet together in the reception room at the okiya. When Mother agrees to pay Mameha the other half of what is owed to her, Mameha reminds her that Mother agreed to pay an extra fifty percent over the normal amount. Mother says that Mameha must be misremembering, and suggests that they ask Sayuri what truly happened. Though she feels torn between making Mother angry and betraying Mameha, Sayuri feels she must tell the truth. Sayuri says that she remembers Mother promising Mameha the extra amount. Mother concedes to pay Mameha the due amount, saying she must have grown forgetful in her old age ...

As a precocious third grader, Jessica Núñez de Ybarra boldly announced to her teacher one day that she intended to become a physician. As one of the youngest of eight children growing up in a loving family in Camarillo, Calif., her parents instilled in her the values of hard work, team effort and service to her community. When she was in high school and her mothers health declined from diabetes and breast cancer, her family grew closer and her desire to pursue her chosen vocation grew stronger.. That experience gave me a respect for life and for health, she recalls. As I grew up and continued my path to my medical career, I wanted to answer the bigger questions: Why did my mother have cancer and why was her health so impacted? Was there a way through education or intervention that I could prevent this tragedy from occurring in other families?. Awareness of disparities. That keen awareness of disparities in opportunities and access to health care and education among minority populations ...
On Mothers Day, he was still a boy-soft wisps of hair just starting to grow on his arm pits, his voice barely beginning to crack-but already mother-less. Her mothers blood infection was so profound that even the strongest antibiotics were almost powerless against the battle. Her platelet count was too low as to graciously permit spontaneous bleeding to happen anywhere in her body: her eyes, her lungs, her brain. That was what killed her: a ruptured vessel, perhaps, that decided to snap in her cerebrum. She was gone in minutes ...
The death of a twin in the womb is traumatic for the mother. Pre- and perinatal psychology emphasizes the importance of a calm and stress-free pregnancy for the mother, so that the child will not be badly affected. The loss of one or more fetuses from a twin or multiple conception is unavoidably stressful. However, with full knowledge of the implications of such a death on all the parties involved and the opportunity to mourn the death openly, the stress on the pregnant mother can be reduced. Ways to reduce the stress on the mother are described.. ...

BECAUSE I DONT KNOW HOW TO BE A MOTHER!" Ruean leaned against the wall and slid down. "My mother died before teaching me how to be one. I went into a rage and destroyed everything about our history. All I know is what I remember from my lessons and what I learned on my own. Ive been alone for so long I forget what means to have someone dependent on me. Hell no one was ever dependent on me. My mother was still young enough to care for herself. My mate was strong and my eggs only needed either me or my mother to keep them warm. I was always away to try and prove my worth for the flock and do as they asked even though Mothers were not asked to help until their hatchlings were old enough to fend for themselves. I have no experience of being depended on. Im old enough I could be a grandmother in our ways but I just realize recently that my egg survived. At least one of them. I could have had more survive and yet I cant even be a mother right. I know nothing so why have someone who depends on me ...
Legit.ng News ★ Mary McCandlish, a mother of four, has gotten a beautiful surprise after she gave birth to triplets. The woman who is a mother of four had decided to have a fifth child, but God blessed her with three children instead.
We visit for about an hour and are sitting back out on the patio, when a group of five older people come out and start talking about their mother. Having met one of the men earlier, I know that the mother has advanced stages Alzheimers and has pneumonia. Its hard not to hear them as they are right next to us. One of the women leaves to check on the doctor and the others are talking about how she wont let the mother go, they are worried about her and dont know how to explain what the mother is going through. The conversation continues when the woman returns. She looks so lost and sad. I walk over and introduce myself. I ask if I can "intrude", and explain briefly (yes I said briefly) my own history with my Dad and Alzheimers. I try and offer some support as they explain where their mother is at this stage. I offered suggestions as to the questions to ask the Doctor and answered questions they had about their mother not eating. It was like I was talking about my Dad. The one woman they were ...

Im the same age as Ms. Eftimiades [well almost, Ill be 42 next month] and as a Woman and a Mother, I feel deeply for her loss. She has no clue to the incredible magic that T21 would have brought to her life. She wanted so much to be a mother, and for that loss I ache for her, because being a Mother is truly the essence of who I am now as a human being. But Ms. Eftimiades should really re-think her desire to be a Mother, it seems to me by her reasoning and actions with this child she is not ready to be a Mother and she doesnt fully understand what it MEANS to be a Mother. ...

Once, near nightfall, I drove past my mothers house. She was inside it, moving about some task. I saw her move from room to room. I could have stopped. Shortly she would draw the blinds but a knock on the door might alarm her who had her routine for night. It was all those unseen moments we do not see the best of a friend, the best of a mother competent and gracious in

Thus my family doctors safest bet to ensure that my kid got all the nutrients that he needed was to introduce him to a health drink that contained all the necessary nutrition to ensure healthy physical and brain development and at the same time was tasty enough to make it easy to include it in his daily diet.. I had been prescribed a mothers health drink by Horlicks during my pregnancy. And as I recalled my pregnancy that was laced with food aversions, the health drink was a high point of my meal routine that I looked forward to. Thus I checked with my doc if Junior Horlicks was a good choice. Once he approved of the alternative, I began by mixing a small quantity of Junior Horlicks in my sons milk, so as to acclimatize him with new taste. To my relief he took it positively, so within a week I was adding the prescribed quantity to his daily milk intake.. Within a couple of months,I could see some definite positive effects. Ability to engage himself in any activity with sustained level of ...
