Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in the manufacture of plastics, to produce reusable drinking bottles, infant feeding bottles and other food storage containers. EFSA was asked to evaluate a dietary developmental neurotoxicity study in rats (Stump, 2009) and recent scientific literature (2007-2010) in terms of relevance for the risk assessment of BPA. The impact of these studies on the current Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) of 0.05 mg BPA/kg body weight (b.w.)/day as set by EFSA in 2006 was assessed. Advice on the Danish risk assessment underlying the Danish ban of BPA in food contact materials for infants aged 0-3 years is included. In this study we describe the molecular basis of carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae in three teaching hospitals at Bandar Abbas, south of Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 170 nonduplicate clinical isolates of K. pneumoniae were investigated. Antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed by disc diffusion method. PCR was carried out for detection of carbapenemase (blaKPC, blaIMP, blaVIM, blaNDM, blaSPM, blaOXA-48, and blaOXA-181) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (blaCTX-M, blaSHV, blaTEM, blaVEB, blaGES, and blaPER). A microbial study was conducted from wastewater soils of hospitals in Aizawl, Mizoram, India which were in existence for a longtime. The isolated bacteria from the wastewater soils were found to be mainly of Morganella morganii and Bacillus cereus and these isolated bacteria were found to be very resistant to a wide range of antibiotics and heavy metals. Antibiotics that were used for treating infections caused by these bacteria like chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin were also found to be insensitive. The degree of resistance was also very high when compared to earlier reports of antibiotic resistance observed in the corresponding bacteria. Our results suggested that the high degree of resistance is probably conferred by the continued exposure to antibiotics from hospital waste leading to a selected population of highly antibiotics-resistant bacteria.

In this review we provide a detailed description of Darwins prediction of the coevolution of a long-spurred orchid, Angraecum sesquipedale, and a long-tongued moth, his correspondence on the subject, the history of the moth and the subsequent literature. On seeing the long spur of A.sesquipedale, Darwin predicted that its pollinator would be a moth with a long proboscis.
