abstractNote = {Liver scintigrams with Tc-99m phytate were reviewed in a total of 64 consecutive patients, comprising 28 with chronic hepatitis and 36 with liver cirrhosis. Reticuloendothelial (RES) function, plasma endotoxin (Et) levels and findings of general liver function tests were used as reference parameters to determine the diagnostic ability of liver scintigraphy. Multivariate analyses revealed that liver scintigrams had a strong correlation with RES function and Et levels in terms of morphology of the liver and hepatic and bone marrow Tc-99m uptake. General liver function tests revealed gamma globulin to be correlated with hepatic uptake and the degree of splenogemaly on liver scintigrams; and ICG levels at 15 min to be correlated with bone marrow and splenic uptake. Accuracy of liver scintigraphy was 73% for chronic hepatitis, which was inferior to general liver function tests (83%). When both modalities were combined, diangostic accuracy increased to 95%. Liver scintigraphy seems to ...
Study summary: Liver transplantation and the reticuloendothelial clearance capacity.. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of liver transplantation on the immune system.. This study will involve the taking of a number of observations but does not involve any treatment, which differs from normal care. Indications for transplantation are solely based on the best clinical practice, which is usually performed at the department.. The study measures liver function based on the clearance of different marker substances by the liver. These substances are given intravenously and their clearance will be measured from bloodstream.. All substances used in this study are registered in the United Kingdom for clinical applications and already used in clinical practice over years. They are safe and without any risk to harm individuals under study. Furthermore no side effects or any symptoms caused by the administration of these substances are expected.. Measurements of liver function are ...

PY - 1996/1/1. Y1 - 1996/1/1. N2 - Invasive pneumococcal infection continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality especially in patients with antibody deficiencies and disorders affecting the reticulo-endothelial system. Current recommendations for prophylaxis in these patients include immunization with 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide capsular vaccines. Post-immunization responses are commonly assessed by measuring serum antibody levels. However, there is no defined protective antibody range and this approach fails to determine the functional capacity of the antibodies. A simple, reproducible flow cytometric method of assessing the antibody-mediated opsonic activity against S. pneumoniae is described. This assay detected defective opsonic function in post-immunized at-risk patients ...
In a healthy person, a red blood cell survives 90 to 120 days in the circulation, so about 1% of human red blood cells break down each day[citation needed]. The spleen (part of the reticulo-endothelial system) is the main organ that removes old and damaged RBCs from the circulation. In healthy individuals, the breakdown and removal of RBCs from the circulation is matched by the production of new RBCs in the bone marrow. In conditions where the rate of RBC breakdown is increased, the body initially compensates by producing more RBCs; however, breakdown of RBCs can exceed the rate that the body can make RBCs, and so anemia can develop. Bilirubin, a breakdown product of hemoglobin, can accumulate in the blood, causing jaundice. In general, hemolytic anemia occurs as a modification of the RBC life cycle. That is, instead of being collected at the end of its useful life and disposed of normally, the RBC disintegrates in a manner allowing free iron-containing molecules to reach the blood. With their ...
NBTXR3 exposed to irradiation enhanced cancer cells destruction and immunogenic cell death compared to irradiation alone, suggesting a strong potential for transforming tumor into an effective in situ vaccine. This may contribute to transform cold tumor into hot tumor and effectively be combined with most of the immunotherapeutic agents across oncology. NBTXR3 is intended to be injected in the tumors. Spilling in the circulation may occur during product administration or, as expected, during tumor destruction, leading to steady trapping of NPs in the reticulo-endothelial system (liver and spleen). Clinically, it is unknown whether patients, previously treated with NPs, may show toxic signs when NPs are exposed (activation) to diagnosis imaging (computed tomography(CT)) of the liver.. Gaucher disease is the most common glycolipid storage disorder, caused by reduced activity of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which leads to the accumulation of the substrate, glucocerebroside (GC), in the cells of the reticulo-endothelial system.. One of the hallmarks of GD is its great phenotypic heterogeneity with variable presentations and symptoms, beginning with a lethal variant of infants dying at or near birth with hydrops fetalis and ichthyoids at one extreme and totally asymptomatic individuals without any physical or laboratory abnormalities at the other extreme.. This autosomal recessive disease is pan-ethnic, but it is especially prevalent among Ashkenazi Jews. From over 300 different mutations reported in the glucocerebrosidase gene, five account for 98% of the disease-producing alleles. Of these mutations, N370S (or 1226G) occurs in 1 out of 17 Ashkenazi individuals, leading to a disease frequency of 1:850 in this ethnic group.. The high prevalence of more than a single ...

Parenchymal cell iron deposition occurs primarily in liver (hepatocytes), pancreas (acinar cells), heart, and other endocrine glands (anterior lobe of pituitary gland). The spleen is usually spared. However, there have been few reports of low signal intensity in the spleen without any history of blood transfusion, the cause of which is unknown.2 Parenchymal cell iron deposition leads to cellular damage and organ dysfunction unless treated.. In transfusional iron overload, haemosiderin is deposited in the reticuloendothelial system, such as the Kupffer cells of the liver and the reticuloendothelial cells of the spleen and bone marrow. This iron is derived from the extravascular haemolysis of intact red blood cells by the reticuloendothelial cells, which occurs during the metabolism of senescent native and transfused erythrocytes. The pancreas is spared because it is not a reticuloendothelial organ. However, pancreatic iron deposition in transfusional iron overload may result from massive ...

Background and aims: Reticulo-endothelial macrophages together with duodenal enterocytes coordinate body iron homeostasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the regulatory actions of the hormone hepcidin on ferroportin expression in these two cell types. Methods: We investigated the in vitro effects of hepcidin in well-characterised human cell culture models of macrophages (differentiated THP-1 cells) and intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2 cells). The in vivo effects of hepcidin were also investigated in mice injected with a synthetic hepcidin peptide. Results: Exposure to hepcidin (presented either as conditioned medium from interleukin-6-stimulated HuH7 cells or as a synthetic peptide) resulted in a rapid (within 4 h) decrease in ferroportin expression in THP-1 macrophages but had no effect on ferroportin levels in Caco-2 cells. To determine whether these rapid effects of hepcidin were also evident in vivo we injected mice with a synthetic hepcidin peptide. Four hours post-injection, ...
Heterologous polyclonal antibodies are obtained from the serum of animals (e.g., rabbit, horse), and injected with the patients thymocytes or lymphocytes. The antilymphocyte (ALG) and antithymocyte antigens (ATG) are being used. They are part of the steroid-resistant acute rejection reaction and grave aplastic anemia treatment. However, they are added primarily to other immunosuppressives to diminish their dosage and toxicity. They also allow transition to cyclosporin therapy. Polyclonal antibodies inhibit T lymphocytes and cause their lysis, which is both complement-mediated cytolysis and cell-mediated opsonization followed by removal of reticuloendothelial cells from the circulation in the spleen and liver. In this way, polyclonal antibodies inhibit cell-mediated immune reactions, including graft rejection, delayed hypersensitivity (i.e., tuberculin skin reaction), and the graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), but influence thymus-dependent antibody production. As of March 2005, there are two ...

Positive-strand RNA infections immediate different virus-specific procedures throughout their infection of sponsor cells. A similar level of theophylline-dependent induction was also observed when a full-length viral genome containing an RE riboswitch was tested. Analysis of this engineered viral genome revealed that this RE, located in the 5 untranslated region, specifically mediates efficient accumulation of plus-strands of the virus genome. Therefore, in addition to allowing for modulation of virus reproduction, the RE riboswitch system also provided insight into RE function. The ability to chemically induce a viral process via modulation of virus genome structure could be useful for basic and applied aspects of research. (15). Specifically, the introduction of mismatches into the lower stem portion of this RE inhibited viral RNA replication, whereas a compensatory mutant containing transposed base pairs was able to replicate to WT levels (15). Importantly, the same study also showed that the ...
Denim will be excited Ive posted this Ive got a 03 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab now, and my Explorer is being driven by my Dad. Its a long story as to why that is, if you care to know PM me. Anyway, I had 2 RE8s in a custom ported box in my X, which will in no way fit in the quad cab of the Ram. Aside from that, we have a 3 week old infant who of course requires a car seat, so rear seat functionality must be maintained. The only thing I can think of is to measure out the area beneath the seats and somehow cram the subs under there, facing out, perhaps angled back. I figure with 8s I should be able to pull this off. The only thing is that I do believe REs function tremendously better w/ the required airspace and a port. Im just hoping to get some opinions on whether or not this would work or if I should sell the REs and move to a free air setup ...

Young adult rabbits (2 to 3 kg.) were subjected to a single total body exposure of x-radiation ranging from 50 to 1200 r and tested frequently for the presence of Cx-reactive protein in their blood. It usually appeared in two phases separated by an interval of several days. The primary phase occurred 24 to 48 hours after irradiation in almost all (92 of 97) rabbits exposed to 500 r or more and in 4 of 16 exposed to 300 r or less. The secondary phase occurred during the 2nd week in many of the rabbits irradiated with 900 r or more and in a few irradiated with 700 r. Autopsy cultures failed to demonstrate the presence of infection in rabbits which died or were sacrificed during the primary phase. Bacterial infection was demonstrated, however, in almost all (21 of 24) rabbits autopsied and cultured during the secondary phase. After the disappearance of the primary phase in rabbits exposed to 700 or 900 r, the secondary phase could be elicited by initiating bacterial infection. Within 6 to 24 hours ...
Subacute bacterial endocarditis often presents a diagnostic problem. The patient with a history of valvular heart disease who experiences the insidious onset of intermittent fever, chills and sweats, signs of peripheral embolism, splenomegaly, and changing heart murmurs presents no such difficulty, and the diagnosis becomes obvious when the results of blood cultures are positive. It is the patient who has atypical findings and whose blood cultures repeatedly yield negative results who presents a difficult problem in evaluation and management.. Subacute bacterial endocarditis with sterile blood cultures has been reviewed elsewhere.1-4 However, the presence or absence of reticuloendothelial cells of the ...

Cytokines are known to modulate the immune system, thus a study of the production of these factors has great relevance to tumor immunity. Here we present evidence that tumor progression causes a profound dysregulation of the cytokine production by various lymphoreticular cells. Furthermore, the tumors themselves are capable of secreting factors that can directly or indirectly affect the cells of the immune ...

In immunology, the mononuclear phagocyte system or mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) (also known as the reticuloendothelial system or macrophage system) is a part of the immune system that consists of the phagocytic cells located in reticular connective tissue. The cells are primarily monocytes and macrophages, and they accumulate in lymph nodes and the spleen. The Kupffer cells of the liver and tissue histiocytes are also part of the MPS. The mononuclear phagocyte system and the monocyte macrophage system refer to two different entities, often mistakenly understood as one. Reticuloendothelial system is an older term for the mononuclear phagocyte system, but it is used less commonly now, as it is understood that most endothelial cells are not macrophages. The mononuclear phagocyte system is also a somewhat dated concept trying to combine a broad range of cells, and should be used with caution. The spleen is the largest unit of the mononuclear phagocyte system. The monocyte is formed in the ...
Low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) accumulate in patients with impaired renal function. As this accumulation depends on heparin chain length and subsequent reticulo-endothelial/renal elimination, LMWHs might have different pharmacodynamic profiles. The primary objective was to examine if any accumulation effect of two LMWHs, enoxaparin and tinzaparin, occurred after repeated administration of a prophylactic dose over eight days in elderly patients (age |75 years) with creatinine clearance between 20 and 50 ml/min and body weight |65Kg. Patients were openly randomized to two groups (enoxaparin 4,000 IU or tinzaparin 4,500 IU once daily). Anti-Xa was measured on day 1 and day 8. Blood samples were taken at 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12, 16 and 24 hours. The primary end point was the accumulation factor calculated as a ratio between the maximal anti-Xa activity on day 1and day 8. Fifty-five patients were included (mean age 87.9 +/- 5.5). The creatinine clearance was 34.7 +/- 11.4 ml/min; the body weight was 52.3
Figure 3. Photomicrograph revealed caseating granuloma with central necrosis, lymphocytes, and giant cells, consistent with tuberculosis.. Discussion TB of the anterior abdominal wall is a rare entity and only isolated cases are reported in the literature. Possible explanation for the rarity of muscle involvement in TB includes high lactic acid content, lack of reticulo-endothelial tissue in muscle, lack of lymphatic tissue, the abundant blood supply, and the highly-differentiated state of muscle tissue.4 Although none of them seems to be an adequate explanation, all theories (except the first one) have been criticized.2. Two forms of skeletal muscle involvement are recognized.5 In the first type the tuberculous process spreads into the muscle through direct extension from a neighbouring structure e.g. bone, joint, tendon, or lymph node. In the second type the spread is haematogenous. Our patient is of interest because she seems to have a primary tubercular anterior abdominal muscular lesion ...
INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that mainly affects synovial joints. Biologics directed against tumor-necrosis-factor (TNF)-alpha are efficacious in the treatment of RA. However, the role of TNF receptor-1 (TNFR1) in mediating the TNFalpha effects in RA has not been elucidated and conflicting data exist in experimental arthritis models. The objective is to investigate the role of TNFR1 in the synovial lining cells (SLC) and the reticuloendothelial system (RES) during experimental arthritis. METHODS: Third generation of adenovirus serotype 5 were either injected locally in the knee joint cavity or systemically by intravenous injection into the retro-orbital venous sinus to specifically target SLC and RES, respectively. Transduction of organs was detected by immunohistochemistry of the eGFP transgene. An adenoviral vector containing a short hairpin (sh) RNA directed against TNFR1 (HpTNFR1) was constructed and functionally evaluated in vitro using a ...
From the nutritional standpoint, several aspects of the biochemistry and physiology of iron are unique. In stark contrast to most other elements, most of the iron in mammals is in the blood attached to red blood cell hemoglobin and transporting oxygen to cells for oxidative phosphorylation and other purposes. Controlled and uncontrolled blood loss thus has a major impact on iron availability. Also, in contrast to most other nutrients, iron is poorly absorbed and poorly excreted. Moreover, amounts absorbed (~1 mg/day in adults) are much less than the total iron (~20 mg/day) cycling into and out of hemoglobin, involving bone marrow erythropoiesis and reticuloendothelial cell degradation of aged red cells. In the face of uncertainties in iron bioavailability, the mammalian organism has evolved a complex system to retain and store iron not immediately in use, and to make that iron available when and where it is needed. Iron is stored innocuously in the large hollow protein, ferritin, particularly in cells
Iron is absorbed through the gastrointestinal mucosa in the ferrous (Fe2+) state. It is oxidized to the ferric (Fe3+) state and is bound to transferrin. Toxicity occurs when the transferrin-binding capacity is exceeded. Iron is a potent catalyst of free radical generation, which is the chief mechanism of iron toxicity. Circulating nontransferrin bound iron can damage blood vessels and can cause transudation of fluids from the intravascular space, resulting in hypotension. Hypotension is potentiated by the release of ferritin, a potent vasodilator. Other target organs include the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, and the cardiovascular system. Autopsy findings include cloudy swelling, fatty degeneration, and necrosis of hepatocytes. Iron deposits can be found in hepatocytes and the reticuloendothelial cells of the liver and spleen. ...

The innate immune system is an evolutionarily ancient system that depends on key sentinel cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system (e.g., monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), and neutrophils) to provide the first line of defense against pathogenic microbes. Signalling defects within these innate immune cells may result in immunodeficiency characterized by the inability to clear infections, while excessive or inappropriate activation of these cells can lead to devastating acute or chronic inflammatory diseases such as cancer, sepsis, arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease. The mononuclear phagocyte system is also critical for organising appropriate adaptive immune responses against pathogens and cancer cells and for maintaining immunological tolerance to self-antigens and for limiting potentially self-destructive immune responses. The long-term goal of the laboratory is to identify the key genes and cellular signalling pathways that guide the development and ...

This report presents a detailed field experience undertaken for 240 hours with the Riley County Extension Agency. The mission of the agency is to make research from land-grant universities understandable and available to the public, who can then use the research to improve their homes, families, farms, businesses and communities. In 2009, a case of H3N2 influenza, a strain of swine flu was contracted by a child at the Riley County Fair. Because of that case, the Riley County Extension Agency has taken a particular interest in educating the public about infectious disease and zoonoses at the annual fair. Because the public comes into contact with many different species of livestock, the fair presents a unique opportunity to educate the public about zoonotic diseases of all domestic animals in a setting that encourages their interest. The experience of being in front of the public, representing the Riley County Extension Agency to the general public, refined my ability to make information ...
