The vertebrate homologues include neuromedin U because it has a PRNamide C-terminal sequence. Megalopa larvae of a spider crab, Hyas araneus, were reared in the laboratory under constant 12°C, 32S, with diatoms (Biddulphia sinensis) given as food. Oxygen consumption, nitrogen excretion, and growth were measured in regular intervals during the moult cycle. Growth was measured as change in dry weight, carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, protein, and lipid. Estimates of energy accumulation obtained independently from either carbon or biochemical components gave similar values of growth. The present results are compared with earlier data measured in carnivorous (Artemia-fed) larvae (ref. 10). In larvae fed with B. sinensis, accumulation of biomass amounted to only ca 8% of that in the Artemia-fed group. Eclosion hormone activity was found in the brain and ventral ganglia of pharate pupae of Manduca sexta. No activity was detected in the corpora cardiaca-corpora allata complex. At the time of ecdysis the store of activity dropped by 50-75% in the ventral cord whereas the hormone level in the brain remained unchanged. Also, larvae whose brains were removed at the wandering stage subsequently showed pupal ecdysis behaviour and also had essentially normal levels of hormonal activity in their blood at the start of the behaviour. It was concluded that at pupal ecdysis the hormone responsible for the initiation of the behaviour is released from the ventral nerve cord rather than from the brain.. En route, both adults and eggs may encounter increased risks from predators, extremes of salinity (rain or concentrated tidepools), and wave impact. Several types of behavior by ovigerous females reduce these risks to both adult females and larvae during migration and spawning. Females migrate directly toward the shore, reducing the time required to reach the sea. They spawn synchronously. Ovigerous females actively release eggs only when the eggs are ripe, precluding premature release, but will do so in water of any salinity, whether still or agitated. All crustaceans periodically moult to renew their exoskeleton. In krill this involves partial digestion and resorption of the old exoskeleton and synthesis of new cuticle. Molecular events that underlie the moult cycle are poorly understood in calcifying crustaceans and even less so in non-calcifying organisms such as krill. To address this we constructed an Antarctic krill cDNA microarray in order to generate gene expression profiles across the moult cycle and identify possible activation pathways. A total of 26 different cuticle genes were identified that showed differential gene expression across the moult cycle. Almost all cuticle genes were up regulated during premoult and down regulated during late intermoult. There were a number of transcripts with significant sequence homology to genes potentially involved in the synthesis, breakdown and resorption of chitin. We predicted that habitat quality, T, and energetic condition would be positively related to the quality of colorful feathers. In studies focused on the breeding season, these factors have been known to influence feather color (e.g., Hill and Montgomerie 1994; Blâs et al. 2007; Ferns and Hinsley 2008; Lindsay et al. 2011; Barron et al. 2013). Here, however, we experimentally induced colorful plumage production in a wintering migratory bird and failed to find support for these predictors. Furthermore, we found that the quality of colorful feathers is diminished when replaced on the wintering grounds, particularly for mature males. Our findings suggest that 1) condition-mediated mechanisms for plumage quality may not be operating in winter and 2) there is a significant cost to plumage quality when feathers are lost in winter. Juvenile and adult growth of Chasmagnathus granulatus was studied in the laboratory in terms of molt increment in size (MI) and the intermolt period (IP), comparing data obtained from short-term (STE) and long-term (LTE) laboratory experiments. Crabs in a premolt condition were collected for STE, including the entire size range of the species. This is a depressing time of year for me,watching the song birds fill up for their migrations.We have had alot fueling up going on the past few days.The adults leave first usually,I never understood why unless the little ones have to earn more flight feathers.There are still 2 remaining hummingbirds & the younger brown thrashers.I look for them to be gone this week.Of course,some birds will remain like the white breasted nuthatcher hanging upside down waiting for his turn at the suet cakes.Usually the evenning red breasted grosbeak stops in on their way through here,but I haven`t seen them yet.This poor female cardinal is growing in more feathers but looks rather rough right now.Have a wonderful week ...
