The MAC sits between the upstream and downstream portions of the cable modem, and acts as the interface between the hardware and software portions of the various network protocols. All computer network devices have MACs, but in the case of a cable modem the tasks are more complex than those of a normal network interface card. For this reason, in most cases, some of the MAC functions will be assigned to a central processing unit (CPU) -- either the CPU in the cable modem or the CPU of the users system.. ...

The V90 USB modem (Com 1) is a networking device that allows user to receive data from an internet service provider at 56K uploading speeds. The modem is attached to a digital telephone line and the modem is able to turn digital signals to analog. The upload speeds of the modem are set at 33.6 Kbps. To avoid any interruptions in data transfer, the user should ensure that his/her phone line is in good quality as poor quality can cause slow downs in data transfer. The modem serves to bridge data transfer between the USB and the traditional com ports. Once the drivers for this device have been installed, the host machine can recognize the modem. The process is supported in multiple windows platform such as Windows 2000, windows 2003, windows 98, Windows home server, server 2008, Vista, XP and windows ME.. ...
A method and apparatus for matching operation modes of modems for connection of terminals to a telephone line, i.e., matching operation forms determined by a communication speed, a coding format, a synchronizing format, etc., on both the calling and answering sides of the telephone line. When the answering side detects an extension specifying signal sent from the calling side, an operation mode of a modem corresponding to the extension specifying signal is used to select the specified operation mode from among a plurality of operation modes for modem circuits equipped on the answering side, for matching the operation mode of the answering side modem with that on the calling side. The answering side modem has a function of detecting a push-button dial signal serving as the extension specifying signal, and a function of providing the plurality of operation modes for the modem and optionally changing the operation mode upon an instruction from an answering side terminal. The answering side terminal
The modem is the last piece of the connection. The modem is connected directly to the DSLAM via the copper loop on the telco end, and plugs into a wall jack on your end. When all is well, the modem syncs with the DSLAM, and then makes an IP connection to the ISP, and off we go! For Linux users, the modem is a very important consideration! There are many modems supplied by ISPs that are not Linux compatible. Your best bet is an external, ethernet interfaced modem (or modem/router combo) that connects via a standard ethernet NIC, since many other modem options (PCI, USB, onboard) will not work due to a lack of drivers at this time! All ethernet based modems will work fine. (See the Modems Section for an up-to-date list of compatible modems.) ISDN users will need a modem (NT) designed specifically for DSL over ISDN. With ethernet modems, the only potential compatibility issue is the Network Card (NIC). (And really any compatible ethernet NIC should do just fine -- 100 Mbps is not even ...

Before getting into the details of this particular modem design, it is helpful to look back to the beginning of amateur packet radio communications to have an understanding of the events and logic that led to the protocol standards used today in 9600 baud digital communications. When AX.25 protocol amateur packet radio communications first began in the early 1980s, early experimenters used Bell-202 type audio frequency shift keying (AFSK) telephone modems to pass packet binary data over the air using voice-grade VHF narrowband FM transceivers. Bell-202 modems were selected not for technical or performance reasons, but because of their wide availability at the time on the surplus market. A data rate of 1200 bits per second was used, which was four times faster than what telephone modems were capable of at the time, and was many times faster than the fastest amateur radio radioteletype (RTTY) communications. Although Bell-202 modems were originally designed for 300 bit per second data ...

Cell modems have one extra layer that some of those other technologies avoid or intermediate; a cell modem connects to The Internet. To be clear thats quite a simplification, as a modem doesnt actually quiiiite connect directly to The Internet. What? Confused yet? Modems connect to a cell carrier which in turn internally routes data that can sometimes connect to the Internet. Thats true of, say, an ESP8266 too, but in that case the ESP connects to your home WiFi, your WiFi connects to a modem which is screwed into a coax connection that eventually leads to your ISP. You pay your ISP to provide Internet to that modem on that cable, the WiFi has an Internet connection, done. The difference here is subtle but important. In the ESP example, the relationship between your widget and the Internet is the same as your laptop and the Internet. Comcast doesnt care what you plug in and in fact they cant see whats connected. Not so with a cell modem.. The cell modem is connected to the carrier ...
Hi, My name is Luis Rodrigues and I work at Universidade de Évora in a Portuguese Linex based distribution called ALinex (www.alinex.org). Since in Portugal many of the people that use Internet access using ADSL USB modems we would like to support them on our distribution. Network Admin doesnt allow for the configuration of the modems or installing the firmware. What we want is to have a dialog that shows several types os modems, the users chooses the one he has and we write the apropriate scripts, if it needs a firmware we would ask the user to enter the location of it. We would like to know what is the best way to support this, make a new application or change one of the existing ones? Best regards, Luis Rodrigues ...

Which should give you the revision number of your modem. If your modem is revision 0 or 2 you will need the KQD6_3.012 file. If your modem is revision 4, then you will require the ZZZL_3.012 file. Both of these files can be located in this tarball here. You will, later, need the firmware-extractor too, which can be found here. Finally you should check this page to find out the VPI/VCI numbers for your country or ISP. Now you have everything, save a copy of this guide too (in text helps), and copy everything to a USB flash drive, floppy disk (if it fits), or a USB external hard drive, so you can use them while offline. NOTE: Unzip isnt supported in a basic Arch Linux installation, you should unzip any .zip files using another computer or operating system first. ...

SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER 09/27 ISDN Rate Hearings Thrown For A Loop ,Microsoft Offers Fast, Cheap Alternative San Francisco Examiner By Louis Trager Copyright 1996 Just when state regulators thought the final arguments over raising ISDN Internet access rates had sounded, a technological bombshell exploded. During a debate described as a culture clash between Bellheads and Netheads, the Public Utilities Commission learned Thursday that Microsoft Corps newest operating system allows users to replicate the high-speed of ISDN lines at a fraction of the cost. According to arguments heard by the PUC, users of Windows NT 4.0, can link four ordinary phone lines to four modems on their computer to duplicate the ISDN connection speed. Such users would pay Pacific Bell about $60 a month for 24-hour-a-day World Wide Web, e-mail, fax and corporate network connections at 128 kilobits per second. By comparison, if Pac Bells bid for a rate increase were approved, ISDN access would cost about $900 a month. ...

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed and third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States for both men and women. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates about 108,070 new cases of colon cancer and 40,740 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed, and about 49,960 deaths will occur as a result of this devastating disease in 2008. Over the last 20 years, the death rate for this cancer has been dropping as a result of screening and early detection of cancer. In 2007, ACS reported that early-stage colorectal cancer had a survival rate close to 80%, and up to 9,632 deaths could be prevented each year if eligible patients received screening when necessary. However, despite the proven efficacy of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, only about 50% of eligible US patients are currently being screened.. Specific Aims. The central hypothesis of this proposal is that patient-initiated prompting of primary care physicians of the patients interest in screening ...
Background-This study investigates the hypothesis that morphologic analysis of intracardiac electrograms provides a sensitive approach to detect acute myocardial infarction or myocardial infarction-induced arrhythmia susceptibility. Large proportions of irreversible myocardial injury and fatal ventricular tachyarrhythmias occur in the first hour after coronary occlusion; therefore, early detection of acute myocardial infarction may improve clinical outcomes. Methods and Results-We developed a method that uses the wavelet transform to delineate electrocardiographic signals, and we have devised an index to quantify the ischemia-induced changes in these signals. We recorded body-surface and intracardiac electrograms at baseline and following myocardial infarction in 24 swine. Statistically significant ischemia-induced changes after the initiation of occlusion compared with baseline were detectable within 30 seconds in intracardiac left ventricle (P,0.0016) and right ventricle-coronary sinus ...
This analysis provides the first cross-sectional view of how patient engagement activities are being implemented in family medicine practices across the United States. Prior assessments have focused solely on FQHCs8 or PCMH-certified sites.7 We found that almost one-third of practices have implemented high-intensity patient engagement, suggesting a shift from the early adopter to the early majority phase of Rogers Theory of Diffusion of Innovations.15 We can hypothesize that innovative patient engagement strategies provide some relative advantage to other practices, perhaps in association with PCMH accreditation and subsequent reimbursement or as a public relations strategy to advertise to consumers.16,17 There may be perceived operational advantages to patient engagement; our prior qualitative and empirical work suggest that patient engagement enhances QI activities, informs clinic priorities for new projects, and provides feedback so that current projects are more ...

Howard Wolpert, MD, senior physician in adult diabetes at Joslin Diabetes Center, director of Joslin Institute for Technology Translation, and associate professor at Harvard Medical School, recognizes 3 issues with current care delivery models that with modification, can change diabetes care in this emerging digital health era. These factors, he pointed out, include: a serious lack of diabetes specialists, an unsuccessful acute-based therapeutic model that concentrates on prescriptive dose adjustment, and an unrealistic care delivery model of patient scheduled office visits. Dr Wolpert believes that care models currently in place are not effectively promoting patient engagement, self-care and self-management skills. Further, they do not adequately satisfying the needs of a patient with a chronic disease like diabetes who may require 24/7 support ...

Now if youre just a little manufacturer with two machines out back and your data-collection link isnt critical, you can probably get away with one of those home routers from Best Buy that youd use to connect your laptop and your desktop at home to your cable modem. Note that it doesnt need to be wireless, and youre probably better off if it isnt. The way you hook it up is to connect the Internet (Uplink) port on the router to the plant network and run a cable from one of the ports on the LAN side to the existing Ethernet switch in the machine. If your data needs to be a bit more reliable, consider buying some kind of Cisco router with NAT capability (but youll be going from the $50 range to many hundreds of dollars - your choice).. Now, when you configure it, you want to make sure that you turn off the port forwarding function, the DMZ function, disallow remote administration, and block all anonymous internet traffic (these should be default settings, but its good to check). Also, make ...

a separation of infrastructure and service providers. the competition that spawned the internet boom in the mid- to late-90s was due to the fact that services like AOL, Earthlink, Prodigy, and others had to keep offering more service for less money. and you could pick ANY of them or switch anytime you wanted (with the minor inconvenience of switching your email addresses) because they had no ties to the phone companies. Cable modem and DSL providers started taking over when they started offering faster service (for more than marginally higher prices) and that not only drove out the independent ISPs, but it intrinsically tied service to infrastructure. And the problem with infrastructure is that every single region in the US (at least that Im aware of) has local monopolies on cable and phone service. None of the areas Ive lived in for the past twenty years have given you a choice of cable provider. if you get cable, you only get Time Warner (or comcast or cox or cablevision or...), and if you ...
GM-90 Alpha / Beta / Gamma detector with two large pancake tubes for even higher sensitivity Please visit our Geiger Counter Product Page to get full details about our line of nuclear radiation detector products. The detector is connected to an ordinary computer (Windows or Macintosh) running a copy of the Rad software and connected to the internet (dialup, cable modem, dsl, etc). Rad automatically sends the current radiation reading to the web server that hosts this site, which generates the map showing the readings for all radiation monitoring stations. Rad is included free with any of our radiation detectors. A geiger counter lets you check the environment and items for radioactivity. You can use to check for the presence of radon on your house or basement, or even use it to go prospecting for uranium or other radioactive minerals. The GM-10 and other members of the geiger counter family can detect radioisotopes such as Polonium 210 which was used to poison Alexander Litvinenko. A geiger ...

NetworkManager provides automatic network detection and configuration for the system. Once enabled, the NetworkManager service also monitors the network interfaces, and may automatically switch to the best connection at any given time. Applications that include NetworkManager support may automatically switch between on-line and off-line modes when the system gains or loses network connectivity. These facilities are most useful for modern laptops, where the user may move between wireless networks, and plug in to a variety of wired networks, but NetworkManager also provides features that are relevant to workstations. Current versions of NetworkManager support modem connections, and certain types of VPN. Development of these features is ongoing. NetworkManager requires Fedora to have drivers for the wired and wireless interfaces on the computer. Many manufacturers of modems and wireless devices provide limited support for Linux. You may need to install additional drivers or firmware on your Fedora ...
A method and system are given for a coupling a data signal over a power distribution system. An inductive signal coupler has two windings. The first winding is in series with a line conductor of the power distribution system. A capacitor is connected between the first line conductor and a second line conductor of the distribution system such that the capacitor presents a high impedance to a power signal and a low impedance to a data signal. A communication device is connected to the second winding so that a data signal can be coupled between the communication device and the distribution system.
The problem focussed on concerns interaction in health and medical settings between patients and health care professionals. The issues studied relate to patient participation and influence in face-to-face encounters with professionals, and to patient evaluation of selected aspects of their experiences of modem health care.. In the theoretical background, it is argued that the health care setting is an example of a communicative situation characteristic of modem society in which people who vary in communicative power and expertise interact. Institutionalized communication thus typically involves encounters between the general public- often referred to as laymen - and one or more experts representing the views and traditions of an institution. At a general level, the central concern of the study is one of making visiblethe patients reactions and of scrutinizing their possibilities of making themselves heard.. The methodological approach utilized is multidisciplinary. In the ftrst two articles, a ...
Background: Dementia syndromes are under-diagnosed and under-treated in primary care. Earlier recognition of and response to dementia syndrome is likely to enhance the quality of life of people with dementia, but general practitioners consistently report limited skills and confidence in diagnosis and management of this condition. Changing clinical practice is difficult, and the challenge for those seeking change it is to find ways of working with the grain of professional knowledge and practice. Assessment of educational needs in a practice has the potential to accommodate variations in individual understanding and competence, learning preferences and skill mix. Educational prescriptions identify questions that need to be answered in order to address a clinical problem. This paper reports the development of an educational needs assessment tool to guide tailored educational interventions designed to enhance early diagnosis and management of dementia in primary care, in the Evidence Based ...
Background: Paratonia causes severe movement dysfunction in late stage dementia. Passive Movement Therapy (PMT) is often used to decrease high muscle tone, but the efficacy has never been shown. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of PMT on muscle tone after two and four weeks of treatment.; Methods: This study comprised a multicenter single-blinded RCT. Nursing home residents with dementia (according to the DSM-IV-TR criteria) and moderate to severe paratonia were randomly assigned to either a PMT or control group. The PMT group received PMT three times a week over four weeks. The control group received no PMT. The primary outcome was the severity of paratonia as measured by the Modified Ashworth scale (MAS). Secondary outcomes were clinical change (Clinical Global Impression; CGI), caregivers burden (modified patient specific complaints; PSC), and level of pain during morning care (Pain Assessment Checklist for Elderly with Limited Ability to Communicate, Dutch version; ...

Aquitaine CENA reunion very pleasant day, as usual: in addition Melody got 10/10 for her TAN (test of natural aptitude) It was funny when she did the recall as some people moved in between her and me so she lost sight of me and ran around peoples legs until she found me and then leapt into my arms and licked my face very happily! Not quite a classic recall! Shed clearly heard me and was looking! The judge said shed done very well, I think she was a bit peeved about the people whod got in

Telemedicine is an attractive new care model-the growth potential is great, its easy to adopt, and so far patients are very happy with it.
Unquestionably, digitization is penetrating healthcare, including the burgeoning post-acute acute marketplace. In my role, I converse with leaders reshaping the patients continuing health recovery, from discharge to home health and hospice centers, skilled nursing facilities, rehab facilities, long-term care hospitals, or home. As a former nurse and provider business executive, its an exciting time to work in innovation on behalf of end users and patients who will benefit from enabling technology that unites the full continuum of care. Why holistic patient engagement matters Still, national survey results that look at the opinions of the senior population are a serious wake-up call, warning us all that a lot more work must be done - particularly in the critical area of patient engagement. Granted it seems marginally small that only 35% of seniors think their health plans do not use technology to improve access, information, or care and have a desire for more tech solutions. Now consider this ...

The proposed conversational agent will provide interactive psychoeducation, assessment tools, and personalized illness management strategies to patients with PTSD. It will support turn-taking and interactivity, which will result in active information flow in both ways rather than just passive delivery of information content. The implementation of the CA will involve dialogue management, handling user input for branching, and delivering appropriate message for a given context. For sustaining longitudinal user engagement, it will leverage the Supportive Accountability model with a specific focus on maintaining social presence and process accountability through personalization, goal setting, and contextualized support. The CA will be developed as a stand-alone module that can be incorporated into a mobile app. This will streamline the deployment of the system to patients. The project will collect real-world data to determine domain specific usability issues and information needs. It will also ...

OBJECTIVE: The ability to accurately and efficiently identify patient cases of interest in a hospital information system has many important clinical, research, educational and administrative uses. The identification of cases of interest sometimes can be difficult. This paper describes a two-stage method for searching for cases ofinterest.. DESIGN: First, a Boolean search is performed using coded database variables. The user classifies the retrieved cases as being of interest or not. Second, based on the user-classified cases, a computer model of the patient cases of interest is constructed. The model is then used to help locate additional cases. These cases provide an augmented training set for constructing a new computer model of the cases of interest. This cycle of modeling and user classification continues until halted by the user.. MEASUREMENTS: This paper describes a pilot study in which this method is used to identify the records ofpatients who have venous thrombosis.. RESULTS: The results ...
