TY - JOUR. T1 - Integrating partner objectives in horizontal logistic optimisation models. AU - Defryn, C.. AU - Sorensen, K.. AU - Dullaert, Wout. PY - 2019/1. Y1 - 2019/1. N2 - In this paper a general solution framework is presented for optimising decisions in a horizontal logistics cooperation. The framework distinguishes between the objective of the group and the objectives of the individual partners in the coalition. Although the importance of the individual partner interests is often acknowledged in the literature, the proposed solution framework is the first to include these objectives directly into the objective function of the optimisation model. The solution framework is applied to a col- laborative variant of the clustered vehicle routing problem, for which we also create a set of benchmark instances. We find that by only considering a global coalition objective, the obtained solution is often suboptimal for some partners in the coalition. Providing a set of high quality alternative ...

Narodil sa ako prvorodený syn Maxa Neumanna (po maď. Neumann Miksa) a Margaret Neumannovej.

The deformed configurations of an inflated flat nonlinear membrane are obtained by the minimum potential energy principle. The deformed configurations of the membrane are assumed to be represented by a series of geometric admissible functions with unknown coefficients. The unknown coefficients that minimize the total potential energy of the deformed membrane are determined by Fletcher and Powells [1] method. The strain-energy-density function for the numerical calculations is assumed to have the Mooney form. The results for a particular case when the Mooney membrane reduces to the neo-Hookean membrane, agree with the previous results obtained by numerical integration of the corresponding equilibrium equations.. ...
Using an asymptotic analysis, we analytically calculate the dispersion and the field distribution of guided modes in an all-dielectric coaxial fiber. We compare the analytical results with those obtained from numerical calculations and find excellent agreement between them. We demonstrate that both the Bragg reflection and the total internal reflection play important roles in providing confinement and determining the dispersion characteristics of the coaxial fiber modes.. © 2002 Optical Society of America. This article is concerned with the theoretical analysis of the functionally graded magneto-electro-thermoelastic hollow sphere due to uniform surface heating. We analyze the transient thermoelastic problem for a functionally graded hollow sphere constructed of the spherical isotropic and linear magneto-electro-thermoelastic materials using a laminated composite mode as one of theoretical approximation in the spherically symmetric state. As an illustration, we carry out numerical calculations for a functionally graded hollow sphere constructed of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive materials and examine the behaviors in the transient state. The effects of the nonhomogeneity of material on the stresses, electric potential, and magnetic potential are investigated.

Data analytics is a unique field where you will learn insights needed to make sense of data, research, and observations from everyday life. You will learn how to apply a data-driven approach to problem solving, but will not only learn about tools, methods, and techniques, or the latest trends, but also more generic insights: why do certain approaches work, why the field is so popular, what common mistakes are made, and so on. You will also learn that data analytics is part science and part art, since in applying methods and searching for findings there is a creative component.. Throughout the workshops you will work on several individual DA assignments, on predefined problems/datasets, using R tools, with a focus on the Life Sciences & Health domain. However, many of these assignments allow for freedom for your own individual approach. Most assignments involve real-world and relevant data sets, often connected to active research. The lectures will provide the theoretical background of how a DA ...
Just to continue a line of criticism from the previous thread, even if the program of ev psych were to be completely established and fulfilled, it is likely that the explanatory power it would offer with respect to human behaviour and organization would be quite limited and a good deal less than that afforded by other approaches. So it is hardly apparent why such a program should assume the mantle of scientific realism and be regarded as obligatory in its consideration. There are likely specific biological constraints that condition and inflect our existence as human beings, in our behavior and the possibilities available to us, but they are far more likely to be discovered piecemeal in the course of empirical biological research than through the erection- (pun or not)- of a grand theory.. Ev psych stakes its claims on universals, which have a tendency on inspection to be less than meets the eye, thin abstractions that carry little by way of detail and explanatory power, given the range of ...
So many great comments to respond to here -- Tom -- John and Mike are addressing the issue you raise -- Sometimes you know that you want to create a new conceptual model that is different from the users mental model. You know that they will eventually have to adjust their mental model to fit the new product or software or conceptual model that you have created. You can do that, but you should be aware that you are doing that, and be aware that the users are going to have to make a shift. You will want to purposely design that conceptual model to be different from their current mental model. The point is to know that you are doing that, and to know that it means that your design may initially not be intuitive or highly usable at first. It might be worth the switch, but it will be a switch. Brett -- Users always have a mental model in operation, but it may be very far off from what you have or what they hope you have. They may not be able to articulate it either. This is what our analysis is all ...

A mathematical model for a physical experiment is a set of equations which relate inputs to outputs. Inputs represent physical variables which can be adjusted before the experiment takes place; outputs represent quantities which can be measured as a result of the experiment.. The forward problem refers to using the mathematical model to predict the output of an experiment from a given input. The inverse problem refers to using the mathematical model to make inferences about input(s) to the mathematical model which would result in a given measured output.. An example concerns a mathematical model for oil reservoir simulation. An important input to the model is the permeability of the subsurface rock. A natural output would be measurements of oil and/or water flow out of production wells. Since the subsurface is not directly observable, the problem of inferring its properties from measurements at production wells is particularly important. Accurate inference enables decisions to be made about the ...

In applying dynamical principles to the motion of immense numbers of atoms, the limitation of our faculties forces us to abandon the attempt to express the exact history of each atom, and to be content with estimating the average condition of a group of atoms large enough to be visible. This method... which I may call the statistical method, and which in the present state of our knowledge is the only available method of studying the properties of real bodies, involves an abandonment of strict dynamical principles, and an adoption of the mathematical methods belonging to the theory of probability. … If the actual history of Science had been different, and if the scientific doctrines most familiar to us had been those which must be expressed in this way, it is possible that we might have considered the existence of a certain kind of contingency a self evident truth, and treated the doctrine of philosophical necessity as a mere sophism. ...

Description: I will explain how to use the techniques of effective field theory (EFT) to modify general relativity, focused particularly on whether it is necessary to restrict to theories with second-order equations of motion, such as Horndeski in the case of scalar-tensor theories. We will find that while such theories are more important than might be naïvely expected from the EFT point of view, there do exist legitimately new, higher-derivative operators which should be considered alongside Horndeski terms. Along the way I will take care to be pedagogical about points that I have found myself unclear on at one point or another. Modern information processing systems show such complex properties as distribution, parallelism, interaction, time dependency, and nondeterminism. For critical applications, mathematical methods are needed to model the systems and to support their development and validation. Impressive progress in mathematical methods for programming software systems makes it possible to think about unifying the different approaches. This book gives a comprehensive overview of existing methods and presents some of the most recent results in applying them. The main topics are: advanced programming techniques, foundations of systems engineering, mathematical support methods, and application of the methods. The approaches presented are illustrated by examples and related to other approaches.

SUMMARY: Critical care environments are complex and dynamic. To adapt to such environments, clinicians may be required to make alterations to their workflows resulting in deviations from standard procedures. Some of these deviations are errors which can result in harmful outcomes. On the other hand, some of the deviations can be innovations, which are dynamic adjustments to the protocols made by people to adapt the current operational conditions and achieve high accuracy and efficiency. However, there is very little known about the underlying cognitive processes that are related to errors and innovations. In this work, deviations from standards in trauma critical care are studied.. METHODS: Field observations were conducted in a Level 1 Trauma unit. A total of 30 Trauma cases were observed and the collected data was analyzed using measures that included customized activity-error-innovation ontology, time-stamps and expertise of the team members. Activities tracked were compared to the Advance ...

An accurate cell-integrated semi Lagrangian and semi-implicit scheme based on step-functions. A new and very accurate cell-integrated semi Lagrangian (CISL) two time level scheme has been formulated and tested for the shallow water equations in a plane channel model with realistic variation of the Coriolis-parameter and including topography. The implementation includes semi-implicit time stepping of the gravity wave terms. Furthermore, two-dimensional advection of passive tracers has been tested in idealized flows as well as in a fully general flow.. Regarding basic features, the new formulation is based on step-functions, which implicitly are advected with the flow across cell boundaries. The scheme is exact in case of passive advection by a flow that is constant in time and space. This means that the accuracy is of indefinite order. In addition to this attractive feature the scheme shows very small numerical dispersion in fully non-linear and divergent flows and in such flows the scheme is ...

In deep water, the amplitude spectrum, a(k) in figure 5a, shows that, while the second-order bound wave components account for some of the energy transfers to the higher wavenumbers (and hence higher frequencies), comparisons with the fully nonlinear BST model indicate significant additional transfers for k,0.05 rad m−1. Furthermore, comparisons between the second- and third-order bound wave solutions confirm that the latter contribution is very small. Further evidence of this is provided in figure 5b,c. In terms of the resulting deep-water wave profile, figure 5b shows that, while the general shape of the wave group is similar to that predicted by linear dispersion, the fully nonlinear wave profile (BST) is higher and steeper than that predicted by linear, second- or even third-order bound wave solutions; the difference in terms of the crest elevation (see insert) is 17, 8 and 7 per cent, respectively. Furthermore, the fact that the maximum crest elevation calculated to third order is only ...

A series of experiments on three-dimensional near fling was carried out. Two pairs of plates, rectangular and triangular, were selected, and the distance between the rotation axes of the two plates of each pair was varied. The motion of the plates as well as the forces and the moment were measured, and the interference between the two plates of a pair was studied. In addition, a method of numerical calculation was developed to aid in the understanding of the experimental results. The interference between the two plates of a pair, which acted to increase both the added mass of each plate and the hydrodynamic force due to dynamic pressure, was noted only when the opening angle between the plates was small. The hydrodynamic forces were strongly influenced by separated vortices that occurred during the rotation. A method of numerical calculation, which took into account the effect both of interference between the plates and of separated vortices, was developed to give adequate accuracy in ...

Many processes in physics, the life sciences and technology that evolve in time are modeled by initial and boundary value problems for partial differential or integro-differential equations. The resulting mathematical theory of Evolution Equations involves tools from many fields of mathematical analysis, notably from functional analysis, operator theory and partial differential equations. This course is a self-contained introduction to the subject. It covers background materials like duality theory, the Bochner integral, vector-valued analytic functions, distributions and Fourier multipliers, vector-valued Laplace transforms, Tauberian theorems, asymptotic analysis, and spectral theory for closed operators on Banach spaces. The theory of Cauchy problems and operator semigroups will be developed completely in the spirit of Laplace transforms. Existence and uniqueness, regularity, numerical approximation, and asymptotic behavior of solutions will be covered and diverse applications to concrete ...
This is the second volume in a projected five-volume survey of numerical linear algebra and matrix algorithms. It treats the numerical solution of dense and large-scale eigenvalue problems with an emphasis on algorithms and the theoretical background required to understand them. The notes and reference sections contain pointers to other methods along with historical comments. The book is divided into two parts: dense eigenproblems and large eigenproblems. The first part gives a full treatment of the widely used QR algorithm, which is then applied to the solution of generalized eigenproblems and the computation of the singular value decomposition. The second part treats Krylov sequence methods such as the Lanczos and Arnoldi algorithms and presents a new treatment of the Jacobi-Davidson method. These volumes are not intended to be encyclopedic, but provide the reader with the theoretical and practical background to read the research literature and implement or modify new algorithms.. ...
Problem solving and modelling are fundamental themes of the course - representing real world situations in a mathematical form and then using appropriate methods and techniques to analyse the situation, translating results back from mathematics to the actual problem situation. You will build on the mathematics that you have already studied, further extending your knowledge of calculus and linear algebra. You will also be introduced to mathematical modelling and learn how to approach building a mathematical representation of a real world problem.. Statistics is another important feature (the course assumes no prior knowledge in this area). Modern technology facilitates the collection of massive datasets which require new statistical techniques to analyse them. The focus within the course is on statistical thinking rather than the routine of how to perform a particular calculation. You will learn about the full problem solving cycle of planning, data collection, analysis and interpretation of ...
We present a novel Process Algebra designed for multi-scale integration modelling: Process Algebra with Layers (PAL). The unique feature of PAL is the modularisation of scale into integrated layers: Object and Population. An Object can represent a molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ or any organism. Populations hold specific types of Object, for example, life stages, cell phases and infectious states. The syntax and semantics of this novel language are presented. A PAL model of the multi-scale system of cell growth and damage from cancer treatment is given. This model allows the analysis of different scales of the system. The Object and Population levels give insight into the length of a cell cycle and cell population growth respectively. The PAL model results are compared to wet laboratory survival fractions of cells given different doses of radiation treatment [1]. This comparison shows how PAL can be used to aid in investigations of cancer treatment in systems biology.. Keywords ...
We investigate a nonlocal reaction diffusion equation with absorption under Neumann boundary. We obtain optimal conditions on the exponents of the reaction and absorption terms for the existence of solutions blowing up in finite time, or for the global existence and boundedness of all solutions. For the blowup solutions, we also study the blowup rate estimates and the localization of blowup set. Moreover, we show some numerical experiments which illustrate our results.
In Electrical engineering programs, a class and field of study known as "signals and systems" (S and S) is often seen as the "cut class" for EE careers, and is dreaded by some students as such. Depending on the school, undergraduate EE students generally take the class as juniors or seniors, normally depending on the number and level of previous linear algebra and differential equation classes they have taken.[16]. The field studies input and output signals, and the mathematical representations between them known as systems, in four domains: Time, Frequency, s and z. Since signals and systems are both studied in these four domains, there are 8 major divisions of study. As an example, when working with continuous time signals (t), one might transform from the time domain to a frequency or s domain; or from discrete time (n) to frequency or z domains. Systems also can be transformed between these domains like signals, with continuous to s and discrete to z.. Although S and S falls under and ...
In this paper, we advocate for a more harmonized approach to model development for additive manufacturing (AM) processes, through classification and metamodeling that will support AM process model composability, reusability, and integration. We review several types of AM process models and use the direct metal powder bed fusion AM process to provide illustrative examples of the proposed classification and metamodel approach. We describe how a coordinated approach can be used to extend modeling capabilities by promoting model composability. As part of future work, a framework is envisioned to realize a more coherent strategy for model development and deployment.. ...

It consists in a pure initial value problem for a first order partial differential equation, that can be applied to the description of the evolution of diseases as thalassemia. We design two numerical methods that prevent the use of the characteristic curve x = 0, and derive their optimal rates of convergence. Numerical experiments are also reported in order to demonstrate the predicted accuracy of the schemes. Finally, a comparison study on their efficiency is presented ...

The research examined the perceptions of those people who have in some way been involved with the creation or implementation of the Clouds of Change report. A study of perceptions of barriers to action-taking held by people who are not familiar with the report might contribute new insights. In terms of specifically building upon this research, there might be some basic rules by which all complex adaptive systems operate, be they social, ecological, etc (Boothroyd, 1992,150; Gell-Mann, 1994, 17; Jacobs, 1984, 224; Prigogine, 1984, 76). Understanding them may inform what capabilities organisms require to successfully function together in such a system. The barriers identified in this research could be re-categorized according to their impact on i) an organisms capability to function as a part of a group and ii) that group s capability to function as part of the ecosphere. For example, an organism or group of organisms must be able to sense the impacts it is making on its environment. Barriers ...
Use of the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify cDNA products reverse transcribed from mRNA is on the way to becoming a routine tool in molecular biology to study low abundance gene expression. Real-time PCR is easy to perform, provides the necessary accuracy and produces reliable as …
We consider a parabolic partial differential equation with power nonlinearity. Our concern is the existence of a singular solution whose singularity becomes anomalous in finite time. First we study the structure of singular radial solutions for an equation derived by backward self-similar variables. Using this, we obtain a singular backward self-similar solution whose singularity becomes stronger or weaker than that of a singular steady state.
Microbes and humans interact in myriad ways, sharing a long history. Many of the most successful microbes are those that inhabit but do not kill their host. Cheaters lose. Tuberculosis settles into the lungs. Helicobacter ...
the leading-order behaviour in ϵ is static and higher order terms (in ϵ) correspond to frequency dependence and dispersive effects.. For periodic media, the statics problem has been well studied by the method of asymptotic homogenization (MAH) (see Bakhvalov & Panasenko 1989; Parton & Kudryavtsev 1993). In a series of papers, Sabina et al. (2002 and references therein) employed Weierstrassian elliptic functions to solve static problems using the MAH for materials of various symmetry and for transversely isotropic phases. Eigenstrain methods (see Nemat-Nasser & Hori 1999) have also been applied in the static context by Jiang et al. (2004).. Extensions to the multipole scheme developed in the pioneering work of Rayleigh (1892) on the effective electrical properties of inhomogeneous media have been applied in many contexts since then. In particular, it was employed first in linear elasticity by McPhedran & Movchan (1994) and in an elastodynamic context by Zalipaev et al. (2002) in order to find ...
Recent work of the speaker with Dan Spielman and Nikhil Srivastava introduced the `method of interlacing polynomials (MOIP) for solving problems in combinatorial linear algebra. The goal of this talk is to provide insight into the inner workings of the MOIP by introducing a new theory that reveals an intimate connection between the use of polynomials in the manner of the MOIP and free probability, a theory developed by Dan Voiculescu as a tool in the study of von Neumann algebras. I will start with a brief introduction to free probability (for those, like me, who are not operator theorists). In particular, I will discuss the two basic operations in free probability theory (the free additive and free multiplicative convolutions), and how they relate to the asymptotic eigenvalue distributions of random matrices. I will then show how certain binary operations on polynomials act as finite analogues of the free convolutions and how the MOIP is effectively transferring the asymptotic bounds ...
Virtual Communities (ViCs) are subject of interest for quite some time now [Hagel and Armstrong, 1997, Garton, et al., 1997, Rheingold, 1993]. Recently, ViCs in the form of Social Network Services like MySpace or StudiVz received a lot of attention. Though, fairly little is known about the temporal evolution of virtual communities and the changes in the communication activity of its users. The research described here is an explorative study examining the communication activity of members of two virtual communities on a longitudinal basis. For that purpose, a graph theoretical model by Pennock et al. [2002] is used which unites "Random Network Theory" and "Scale-free Networks". This model allows the operationalization of the empirical distribution functions of the communication activity in ViCs with only one free parameter. That parameter - the mixing factor α - represents the ratio between the antagonists heterogeneity and homogeneity. The nonlinear curve fitting of the empirical ...
Investigations and measurements of metastable states are in many ways very important. Spectroscopists, theorists and astrophysicists have all great interest and requirements regarding knowledge about such states and their properties. One of the interesting properties is the lifetime of each state and lifetime measurements are therefore of great importance. It is necessary to have a long observation time when performing investigations on metastable states in ions and there are some different methods to fulfill this requirement. One method to store ions is to use an ion storage ring in which the ions are bent in circle by a magnetic or an electrostatic field. The storage ring method combined with a laser probing technique constitutes the basis for the papers described in this thesis. The thesis also contains some theoretical background to the experiments together with explanations regarding the experimental setup, the procedure for the laser probing technique and the systematic effects that have ...
The Neumann TLM 103 is a large diaphragm condenser microphone for professional and home recording studios. Featuring the transformerless circuitry also found in Neumanns other TLM microphones, the TLM 103 boasts an incredibly low self-noise level, while being able to handle SPL of up to 138dB without distortion.
A combination of exponential and log - logistic failure rate model is considered and named it as exponential log-logistic additive failure rate model. An attempt is made to present the distributional properties, estimation of parameters, testing of hypothesis and the power of likelihood ratio criterion about the proposed model.
These difficulties have been in Mathematica since its first design, and although there have been a number of redesigns of the arithmetic, it retains the element of treating floating point numbers as though they were intervals. Careful numerical analysis is hindered by this design, which was intended to be used by non-careful sloppy people. But the design has some flaws which make it necessary for people who know what they are doing, to re-learn a new and not very comfortable calculus of numbers, at least if they want to use Mathematica. It also interferes with sloppy calculation. One choice of course is not to use Mathematica for numerical calculation. There are other arbitrary precision packages. Another choice is to test, and reset the accuracy of numbers at critical points. Realize, for example, that certain convergent iterations will not produce more accurate answers (as is normal), but will produce vaguer answers at each step because of Mathematicas arithmetic. They will terminate not when ...
The Davis-Moore thesis, though open for debate, was an early attempt to explain why stratification exists. The thesis states that social stratification is necessary to promote
Abstract: We show how the Riemann surface $\Sigma$ of $N=2$ Yang-Mills field theory arises in type II string compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The relevant local geometry is given by fibrations of ALE spaces. The $3$-branes that give rise to BPS multiplets in the string descend to self-dual strings on the Riemann surface, with tension determined by a canonically fixed Seiberg-Witten differential $\lambda$. This gives, effectively, a dual formulation of Yang-Mills theory in which gauge bosons and monopoles are treated on equal footing, and represents the rigid analog of type II-heterotic string duality. The existence of BPS states is essentially reduced to a geodesic problem on the Riemann surface with metric $,\lambda,^2$. This allows us, in particular, to easily determine the spectrum of {\it stable} BPS states in field theory. Moreover, we identify the six-dimensional space $\IR^4\times \Sigma$ as the world-volume of a five-brane and show that BPS states correspond to two-branes ...
Representations of Small Degree of Finite Groups of Lie Type Abstract: An important tool for studying a (finite) group G is to consider its representations, i.e., homomorphisms from G to GL(n,F) from G into groups of invertible nxn-matrices over various fields F. The n is called the degree of the representation. In this talk we consider as groups G finite groups of Lie type - these will be introduced informally. They are closely related to many of the finite simple groups which were classified in the 1980s. An example are the general linear groups GL(k,q) of invertible kxk-matrices over a finite field with q elements. We will consider the following question: For a given such group G and a given (algebraically closed) field F, what is the smallest degree of a non-trivial representation of G over F? The known answers to this question rely on quite deep mathematics, and the theoretical background is very different depending on the characteristic of the field F: F is the complex numbers, or of ...
