OBJECTIVES:To determine the factors associated with visits to a dentist and more specifically the role of dental insurance coverage and to explore the reasons for not visiting a dentist among minorities in New York State. METHODS:The Minority Health Survey was a one-time, statewide, random digit-dialed telephone survey. We drew a directed acyclic graph (DAG) of the potential determinants of oral health care utilization for our population of interest and modeled the independent variables as determinants of oral health care utilization. The data for this study were analyzed in SUDAAN using appropriate weights and variance adjustments that accounted for the complex sampling design. Hence, this report is generalizable to the New York State adult minority population. RESULTS:About 63 percent respondents had visited a dentist in the past one year. Having dental insurance (adjusted odds ratio [adj OR]=2.5), having more than high school education (adj OR=1.9), being younger (adj OR=2.3 for 18-25 years ...

Serum albumins from mammalian species differ in amino acid sequence and protein structure. Consistent with this, binding-site affinity and selectivity vary from species to species. Site I on human serum albumin consists of two overlapping subregions, one for warfarin and one for azapropazone (Fehske et al., 1982). These subregions overlap in rat and are separate in bovine and absent in dog (Kosa et al., 1997). We observed differences in binding affinity of warfarin with rat, bovine, and human albumin that correlated with reported KD constants (Seller et al., 1977). Because of these differences, albumins from separate species should not be considered interchangeable. Nonetheless, no statistically significant differences were observed between predicted and measured up-take Kin with any of the three albumins.. A number of studies have been published suggesting enhanced dissociation of ligands that bind fairly selectively to Sudlow site II of albumin (e.g., benzodiazepines and tryptophan) (Jones et ...

A study conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that among adolescents, boys are less willing to seek help from mental health (http://www.teenzeen.org/health-wellness.html) professionals than girls due to social stigmas or parental disapproval.. ...

Underage drinking over the Fourth of July weekend brings double the usual number of boys to emergency rooms, according to a government report.. The study showed that during the 2009 Fourth of July weekend, there were an average of 622 emergency room visits per day related to drinking by boys between the ages of 12 and 20. There were an average of 304 such visits per day during the rest of that month, according to the report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).. There were 320 visits per day over that holiday weekend related to drinking by underage girls, up from that months daily average of 273, the report said.. This study sheds light on the grim truth that holidays are too often marked by a surge in underage drinking - turning what should be a time of celebration into a time of tragedy, said SAMHSA administrator Pamela S. Hyde. Clear parental disapproval of alcohol use by their children can assist in preventing underage drinking.. There were 200,000 ...

The fall weather arrived in full force in Tribune on October 11th bringing a slight change of plans to the 2008 Community Wellness Conference. With a low cloud cover and forecast for storms on track for later in the day, the University of Kansas plane was not able to land with scheduled speakers. Fortunately with the help of high school principal Ken Bockwinkel and four amazing students, the conference agenda was not negatively impacted.. Leann Thieman, RN began the day with a phenomenal keynote address on Balancing Life. She spoke to the crowd of mostly healthcare workers and shared stories of her experiences in the Vietnam baby lift operation and years of work in healthcare. Strategic Plan 2023 (view and download as single pages). I am energized by the participation and creativity of our faculty, staff, and students, all of whom worked with pride and passion to help develop our Strategy for Excellence. This inclusive process engaged our entire community through the work of specific teams, discussions at several town hall meetings, and breakout sessions at a faculty retreat. As we move our strategy into action, please keep in mind that we must always carry on the work of the day - the essential functions of a school of dentistry. A new strategy does not supersede these important daily functions; instead, the new strategy outlines the key activities we will perform to realize our vision.. This strategy includes our shared vision, mission, and values, and it represents the blueprint of our path forward. By continually evaluating our key performance indicators, we are committed to staying focused on achieving our goals, which are to:. • Cultivate big ideas for dental ...

Breakout session: 9:00 - 9:30 am. Register by July 12: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUuf-ihrjkvHdblKZvD5FxOqkbpFnnjd1U_. According to recent figures from the World Food Program (WFP), lives and livelihoods of 265 million people in low and middle-income countries will be under severe threat as a result of corona virus pandemic. This is nearly double the 135 million people in 55 countries that the Global Report on Food Crises 2020 has estimated as facing acute hunger as a result of conflict, the impact of climate change and economic crisis prior to the onset of COVID-19. ILO estimates that as many as 25 million people could become unemployed, with a loss of workers income of as much as USD 3.4 trillion due to COVID19 globally. The evidence from the drastic effects of the pandemic clearly speaks to a broken system , social safety nets, health care, and social protection systems, that are either severely lacking or completely missing and that will continue to amplify poverty and ...

There was a strong thread running through the conference on the importance of the human side of engineering and operations, understanding and empathizing with people across the organization. There were two presentations specifically on empathy: one from an engineering perspective by Joyents Matthew Smillie, and another excellent presentation on the neuroscience of empathy by Dave Mangot at Librato, which explained how we are all built for empathy and that it is core to our survival. There was also a presentation on gender issues, and several breakout sessions on dealing with people issues and bringing new people into DevOps. Another side to this was how we use tools to collaborate and build connections between people. More people are depending more on - and doing more with - chat systems like HipChat and Slack to do ChatOps. Using chat as a general interface to other tools, leveraging bots like Hubot to automatically trigger and guide actions, such as tracking releases and handling incidents. ...

As noted by the Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) Office of Minority Health, genetic differences can make a cancer treatment more toxic in one ethnic group than it would be in another. These variations can also make drugs like antidepressants and blood-pressure medications less effective in one group than another. For this reason, it is vitally important that the process used to test the effectiveness of new medicines accurately reflects the patient population that will eventually take them.. Clinical trials are also an important piece of the scientific framework of evidence-based medicine, which inform clinical guidelines and quality measures that direct how we manage most medical disorders. Unfortunately, the underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native American and Asian Americans in clinical trials can mean that those guidelines and quality measures are frequently silent or must rely on lower levels of evidence to determine their benefit for minority ...

Drugs of abuse stimulate their own taking, create a sense of craving or wanting, and left unchecked often undermine health and survival. Since 1975, I have studied heroin and other opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, cigarettes, marijuana, and alcohol. With my colleagues at Yale University School of Medicine, University of Florida, and now Washington University in St Louis we have looked at how drugs hijack and also change the brain. The COVID19 pandemic has changed drug availability (less heroin and more fentanyl) and access to naloxone rescues by EMTs and Emergency Rooms. We update what we know in 2021 on the brain and behavior effects of drugs of abuse in the context of the pandemic with more synthetics, more behavioral and psychiatric consequences, and disease and less access to care. ...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading type of cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States. This study focuses on improving CRC screening in The Ohio State University Primary Care Network (OSUPCN). Ohio has higher than average rates of CRC mortality compared to the rest of the US. The study population for this study will also include minority and older individuals as these groups have higher CRC incidence and mortality rates.. The goal of this study is to test a program to improve CRC screening among male and female patients over the age of 50 in 10 primary care clinics. This study will use physician surveys, focus groups and a community advisory board to finalize the content of the interventions. Five theoretical models form the theoretical framework of the study - the health belief model, social networking, minority health communications model, PEN III, and the transtheoretical model. The interventions will be directed at the clinic and patient levels, and ...
