The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is an American government health institute. It is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The stated mission of the NIMHD is to lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities.[1] The mission of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities is aimed at a wide variety of people whether the disparity is caused by gender, age, economic status, ethnicity, or residential location. In any case, if a person is assumed to be part of a minority group, then there is a risk for health disparities to form.[2] Minority Health relates to people that are socially categorized into minority groups because they do not hold positions of power in our society.[3] Health disparities refer to rates of illness and disease that are disproportionate within a society.[4] Health disparities have been a subject of interest great enough to inspire the creating and implementation of ...

The Wayne County Health Department has received a state grant to help provide more services for the countys minority population. And health officials said they will turn to local churches for help in using the money. The three-year grant, made possible by the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, will provide $126,603 this year. Health Director Davin Madden said part of the money will be used to hire a wellness coordinator. The Health Department previously had a similar position, termed a minority health coordinator. Rovonda Freeman served in the capacity from 2008-10. While in the role, she targeted minority churches as a way to reach the people in need. Madden said that will continue. Churches (are) one of the most successful vectors because they already have the infrastructure, he said. The first year of the latest grant will be spent working with eight churches, followed with a different group of eight the second year and still another group of eight the final year, Madden ...

Sandra Millon Underwood, RN, PhD, FAAN, is trying to address this issue by holding workshops that train nurse educators to teach their students about the importance of eliminating minority health disparities. These workshops focus on disparities in cancer prevention and early detection and are funded by the National Cancer Institute.. Underwood, the American Cancer Society Harley Davidson Oncology Nursing Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Nursing, has some doubts about how seriously the issue of health disparities is being taken. Its certainly a buzzword of the 21st century, but I dont see us as educators addressing it, she argues. I would like to believe the situation is improving, but I dont think it is.. Engaging nursing students in this issue is the most powerful way we can effect a change in the future, Underwood continues. Were teaching the next generation so they can engage in practices that may reduce health disparities. If we would truly commit to ...

CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION. MINORITY HEALTH AND HPV THE IMPPACT OF HPV Human papillomavirus, also known as HPV, does not discriminate. Almost everyone who is sexually active will be infected with HPV sometime in his or her life. Most of the time, the infection goes away on its own, but sometimes HPV infections can lead to cancer. This happens among people in all communities, including in communities of color. Every year in the United States, about 17,500 women and 9,300 men are diagnosed with cancers probably caused by HPV. CERVICAL CANCER Despite widespread availability of screening and treatment, about 4,000 women die from cervical cancer in the United States every year. Women of color often are diagnosed with cervical cancer at a later stage than white women. Black women are more likely to die from cervical cancer than women of other races or ethnicities are, possibly because of decreased access to Pap testing or follow-up treatment. Hispanic women have the highest rates of ...

Engagement is the state of being involved, enthusiastic, and committed to a task or effort. An engaged patient is one who takes active ownership over his or her health in concert with health professionals. While its widely accepted that increasing patient engagement often results in better outcomes across the board, its not always a simple proposition. Part of the problem is that many of us carry a model in our heads of what drives patient engagement that is too simplistic to be effective. Deepening our understanding of what motivates, de-motivates, enables, and disables patients, will increase our influence on their participation in the healing process. This session will aim to walk you through a Diagnostic tool called the Six Sources of Influence in order to deepen our understanding of the motivations and abilities that help or impede patient health. ...

The next day was chock full of breakout sessions and meeting the exhibitors. During this session, the speakers had us write on two sides of an index card. The front was about what cancer has taken from you. The back was for something that people dont understand that affects our cancer journey. On the front, I wrote about my grandfather (d. 2005 of non-Hodgkins lymphoma), and my family suffering from familial papillary thyroid cancer (theres more about this in previous blog entries, if you are new to this blog). This was not the difficult part. The difficult part was the back. I wrote about how I am about to celebrate my 9th cancerversary, and yet the stigma that thyroid cancer is the good cancer still exists. It hurts to feel like my journey is easier than others, when really everyones journey with cancer is different and cannot be ...

Additionally, the propensity for certain diseases or illnesses is of concern in certain minority groups. These specific health issues include infant mortality rates, cancer , cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV infection , and immunizations. The primary minority groups in the United States are Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans and Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, and gays and lesbians. One of the major health problems in the United States is overweight and obesity , which lead to increased risks for a wide variety of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension , and cancer. A 2003 study by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality shows that African-American and Hispanic children face much higher odds of being overweight than non-Hispanic white or ...

Significant recognition of health and health care disparities began over a decade ago with several landmark reports and the first major legislation focused on reduction of disparities. The release of two Surgeon Generals reports in the early 2000s showed disparities in tobacco use and access to mental health services by race and ethnicity.24,25 The first major legislation focused on reduction of disparities, the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act of 2000,26 created the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, and authorized the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to regularly measure progress on reduction of disparities. Soon after, the Institute of Medicine released two seminal reports documenting racial and ethnic disparities in access to and quality of care.27,28. The ACA advanced efforts to improve health and health care and reduce disparities.29 The ACAs broad coverage expansions and increased funding for community health ...

OBJECTIVES:To determine the factors associated with visits to a dentist and more specifically the role of dental insurance coverage and to explore the reasons for not visiting a dentist among minorities in New York State. METHODS:The Minority Health Survey was a one-time, statewide, random digit-dialed telephone survey. We drew a directed acyclic graph (DAG) of the potential determinants of oral health care utilization for our population of interest and modeled the independent variables as determinants of oral health care utilization. The data for this study were analyzed in SUDAAN using appropriate weights and variance adjustments that accounted for the complex sampling design. Hence, this report is generalizable to the New York State adult minority population. RESULTS:About 63 percent respondents had visited a dentist in the past one year. Having dental insurance (adjusted odds ratio [adj OR]=2.5), having more than high school education (adj OR=1.9), being younger (adj OR=2.3 for 18-25 years ...

OBJECTIVE: Recent policy has focused on documenting and reducing ethnic disparities in availability and quality of health care. The authors examined differences by ethnic status in unmet need for alcoholism, drug abuse, and mental health treatment. METHOD: Data were from a follow-up survey of adult respondents to a 1996-1997 national survey. Non-Hispanic whites, African Americans, and Hispanics were compared in access to alcoholism and drug abuse treatment and mental health care (primary or specialty), unmet need for care, satisfaction with care, and use of active treatment for alcoholism, drug abuse, and mental health problems in the prior 12 months. RESULTS: A total of 31.9% of whites, 28.1% of African Americans, and 30.1% of Hispanics had some alcoholism, drug abuse, and mental health care, mostly in primary care. Among those with perceived need, compared to whites, African Americans were more likely to have no access to alcoholism, drug abuse, or mental health care (25.4% versus 12.5%), and ...
