The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) is an American government health institute. It is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The stated mission of the NIMHD is to "lead scientific research to improve minority health and eliminate health disparities."[1] The mission of the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities is aimed at a wide variety of people whether the disparity is caused by gender, age, economic status, ethnicity, or residential location. In any case, if a person is assumed to be part of a minority group, then there is a risk for health disparities to form.[2] Minority Health relates to people that are socially categorized into minority groups because they do not hold positions of power in our society.[3] Health disparities refer to rates of illness and disease that are disproportionate within a society.[4] Health disparities have been a subject of interest great enough to inspire the creating and implementation of ...

The Wayne County Health Department has received a state grant to help provide more services for the countys minority population. And health officials said they will turn to local churches for help in using the money. The three-year grant, made possible by the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, will provide $126,603 this year. Health Director Davin Madden said part of the money will be used to hire a wellness coordinator. The Health Department previously had a similar position, termed a minority health coordinator. Rovonda Freeman served in the capacity from 2008-10. While in the role, she targeted minority churches as a way to reach the people in need. Madden said that will continue. "Churches (are) one of the most successful vectors because they already have the infrastructure," he said. The first year of the latest grant will be spent working with eight churches, followed with a different group of eight the second year and still another group of eight the final year, Madden ...

Sandra Millon Underwood, RN, PhD, FAAN, is trying to address this issue by holding workshops that train nurse educators to teach their students about the importance of eliminating minority health disparities. These workshops focus on disparities in cancer prevention and early detection and are funded by the National Cancer Institute.. Underwood, the American Cancer Society Harley Davidson Oncology Nursing Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Nursing, has some doubts about how seriously the issue of health disparities is being taken. "Its certainly a buzzword of the 21st century, but I dont see us as educators addressing it," she argues. "I would like to believe the situation is improving, but I dont think it is.. "Engaging nursing students in this issue is the most powerful way we can effect a change in the future," Underwood continues. "Were teaching the next generation so they can engage in practices that may reduce health disparities. If we would truly commit to ...

Engagement is the state of being involved, enthusiastic, and committed to a task or effort. An engaged patient is one who takes active ownership over his or her health in concert with health professionals. While its widely accepted that increasing patient engagement often results in better outcomes across the board, its not always a simple proposition. Part of the problem is that many of us carry a model in our heads of what drives patient engagement that is too simplistic to be effective. Deepening our understanding of what motivates, de-motivates, enables, and disables patients, will increase our influence on their participation in the healing process. This session will aim to walk you through a Diagnostic tool called the Six Sources of Influence in order to deepen our understanding of the motivations and abilities that help or impede patient health. ...

The next day was chock full of breakout sessions and meeting the exhibitors. I attended two of the breakout sessions, but the one that stood out the most was What Cancer Stole From Me: Grieving the Losses Associated With Cancer. During this session, the speakers had us write on two sides of an index card. The front was about what cancer has taken from you. The back was for something that people dont understand that affects our cancer journey. On the front, I wrote about my grandfather (d. 2005 of non-Hodgkins lymphoma), and my family suffering from familial papillary thyroid cancer (theres more about this in previous blog entries, if you are new to this blog). This was not the difficult part. The difficult part was the back. I wrote about how I am about to "celebrate" my 9th cancerversary, and yet the stigma that "thyroid cancer is the good cancer" still exists. It hurts to feel like my journey is easier than others, when really everyones journey with cancer is different and cannot be ...

These specific health issues include infant mortality rates, cancer , cardiovascular disease, diabetes, HIV infection , and immunizations. The primary minority groups in the United States are Hispanics, African Americans, Native Americans and Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, and gays and lesbians. One of the major health problems in the United States is overweight and obesity , which lead to increased risks for a wide variety of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension , and cancer. Significant recognition of health and health care disparities began over a decade ago with several landmark reports and the first major legislation focused on reduction of disparities. The release of two Surgeon Generals reports in the early 2000s showed disparities in tobacco use and access to mental health services by race and ethnicity.24,25 The first major legislation focused on reduction of disparities, the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research and Education Act of 2000,26 created the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, and authorized the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to regularly measure progress on reduction of disparities. Soon after, the Institute of Medicine released two seminal reports documenting racial and ethnic disparities in access to and quality of care.27,28. The ACA advanced efforts to improve health and health care and reduce disparities.29 The ACAs broad coverage expansions and increased funding for community health ...

Each year, three million men in the U.S. battle prostate cancer - one in nine will be diagnosed. African-American men are 74% more likely to develop prostate cancer in their early 50s and 2.4 times more likely to die of the disease. There are a number of factors contributing to this issue including access to quality medical care, issues of physician mistrust and genetic predisposition. Data also shows that black men are less likely to be advised about cancer screenings and less likely to undergo surgery or chemotherapy. "It was shocking for me to learn that African-American men have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic group in the U.S. for most cancers and that prostate cancer is the number one diagnosed cancer among veterans," said Chris Tucker. "Its imperative that the black community understand the risks and do as much as possible to increase their chances of surviving or even better, preventing the disease by making certain lifestyle changes." It has been argued that the reason for the relationship between ones identity and food choice behavior may be based on the use of food choices as a means of enacting ones identity and communicating it to others. As an example, a person who chooses to become vegetarian for ethical or health reasons would have a difficult time returning to meat eating without redefining his or her identity as an eater. The shortage of transplant kidneys has spurred debate about legalizing monetary payments to donors to increase the number of available kidneys. However, buying and selling organs faces widespread disapproval. We survey a representative sample of Americans to assess disapproval for several forms of kidney market, and to understand why individuals disapprove by identifying factors that predict disapproval, including disapproval of markets for other body parts, dislike of increased scope for markets, and distrust of markets generally. Our results suggest that while the public is potentially receptive to compensating kidney donors, among those who oppose it, general disapproval towards certain kinds of transactions is at least as important as concern about specific policy details. Between 51% and 63% of respondents approve of the various potential kidney markets we investigate, and between 42% and 58% want such markets to be legal. 38% of respondents disapprove of at least one market. Respondents ...
We then moved into a discussion of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, followed by breakout sessions with small groups. Our small groups allow us to share best practices and new ideas around three important topics. This time around, the topics were: Healthcare A&D Strategy, Dealer Healthcare Marketing, and Ambulatory Strategy.. That afternoon, we visited the Georgia Tech Simtigrate Lab. Simtigrate is a word they came up with to combine Simulation & Integrate. The 5,000-square-foot lab allows for re-creation of medical spaces. Working with architects, engineers, medical personnel and others, this group helps come up with ideas for spaces and environments that are more efficient, offer patient safety, decrease chances for acquiring infections and increase collaboration among staff. The approach involves evaluating existing research, conducting research, testing proposed solutions in simulated medical environments, validating the solutions in a living lab and translating the solutions for broad ...

One breakout session I attended yesterday dealt with an automated system that would notify victims (and others...actually anyone in the community) when an offender is released from county jails ....even when bond has been posted ...
With that said, there are a few very interesting applications I could see the TX1 being used for. My car needs a new head unit, and building one with the TX1 would future proof it for at least another 200,000 miles. For the very highly skilled amateur engineers, the TX1 module opens a lot of doors. Six webcams is something a lot of artists would probably like to experiment with, and two DSI outputs - and a graphics card - would allow for some very interesting user interfaces.. That said, the TX1 carrier board is not the breakout board for these applications. Id like to see something like what Sparkfun put together for the Intel Edison - dozens of breakout boards for every imaginable use case. The PCB files for the TX1 carrier board are available through the Nvidia developers portal (hope you like OrCAD), and Samtec, the supplier for the 400-pin connector used for the module, is exceedingly easy to work with. Its not unreasonable for someone with a reflow toaster oven to create a breakout for ...

Source: www.fda.gov/oashi/aids/virals.html, Food and Drug Administration. Since the understanding of the necessity of combination therapy and the development of multiple new medications, death and the development of AIDS have dropped off dramatically in the USA and other areas of the world that have access to medications and the infrastructure necessary to provide these medications and monitor them. Currently there are 25 drugs available in the USA including combinations of drugs into one medication. The importance of adherence to medications, resistance testing, and important parameters like when to begin treatment are the most important non-drug issues that have been clarified in the last few years.. AIDS continues to kill in areas of the world and in the US where there is poor drug availability or lack of skill at using the drugs. As the epidemic reaches into the lower socioeconomic classes of the US, it has become more and more a disease of heterosexuals. Minority women sit at the fastest ...
Cheryl A. Boyce recently retired as Executive Director of the Ohio Commission on Minority Health. She served as Director of the Commission from its inception in 1986 through late 2010. The Commission was the first state agency in the nation created exclusively to eliminate health disparities for minorities. African Americans, Latino/Hispanics, Asians and Native American Indians constitute priority communities for the agency. She is an independent Public Health Consultant with a specialty in issues of health disparities.
The efficacy of antiretroviral treatments in sub-Saharan Africa has been demonstrated in cohort studies and pilot trials. The treatment regimens tested in these studies were derived from those used in pre-marketing trials conducted in industrialized countries.. However, the choice of antiretrovirals for national programs in poor countries is largely based on drug availability through the Access program, together with cost and supply considerations, rather than on field evaluations of recommended strategies.. Concomitantly with the development of antiretroviral access programs in the southern hemisphere, first-line treatments in industrialized countries have tended to become simpler, thereby improving their convenience and reducing the incidence and severity of their adverse effects. These simplified treatments involve fewer tablets and intakes, fixed-dose combinations, and also radically new strategies such as boosted protease inhibitor and tenofovir. These simplified strategies are being ...

Users of ED drugs had higher rates of STDs than nonusers the year before initiating ED drug therapy (214 vs. 106 annually per 100,000 persons; P = 0.003) and the year after (105 vs. 65; P = 0.004). After adjustment for age and other comorbid conditions, users of ED drugs had an odds ratio (OR) for an STD of 2.80 (95% CI, 2.10 to 3.75) in the year before initiating drug therapy; the OR was 2.65 (CI, 1.84 to 3.81) in the year after…[In other words], Men who use ED drugs have higher rates of STDs, particularly HIV infection, both in the year before and after use of these drugs. The observed association between ED drug use and STDs may have more to do with the types of patients using ED drugs rather than a direct effect of ED drug availability on STD rates. ...
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Office of Minority Health (CMS OMH) released a new interactive map to increase understanding of geographic disparities in chronic disease among Medicare beneficiaries.. The Mapping Medicare Disparities (MMD) Tool identifies disparities in health outcomes, utilization, and spending by race and ethnicity and geographic location. Understanding geographic differences in disparities is important to informing policy decisions and efficiently targeting populations and geographies for interventions.. "Our commitment to health equity begins with properly measuring the care people get and having an honest dialogue on how and where we need to improve," said CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt. "Todays tool aims to make it harder for disparities to go unaddressed.". Racial and ethnic minorities experience disproportionately high rates of chronic diseases, and are more likely to experience difficulty accessing high quality of care than other individuals. The ...
INSIGHT INTO DIVERSITY - The school began to seriously investigate LGBTQ health topics in the early 2000s, according to BCHSs RON STALL. "In terms of sexual minority health, a majority of public funding has always gone to HIV/AIDS research, and other disparities for [gay men] were relatively unaddressed," he explains. "For other populations, like trans women and lesbian or bisexual populations, the basic research had never even been done." ...
My recent research focuses on health inequality over the life course. Current projects examine minority health, obesity and health, and the long term consequences of early adversity on adult health.. For the past two decades, I have studied inequalities in health and health service use between White and African Americans. In recent years, I have extended this line of inquiry to studies of Hispanic health. My research on obesity examines the health consequences of excess body weight, especially whether the duration of obesity accelerates health decline and increases health service use. Drawing from my prior studies examining the link between childhood overweight and adult obesity and health, I am currently examining the health consequences of other forms of early misfortune. Owing to my interests in how stratification processes unfold over the life course, I have developed a theory for the study of human development, aging, and health: cumulative inequality theory. I anticipate further developing ...

Well, this is probably the easiest one of the bunch - Ill let the trusty Thinkolator rest under the desk for a moment and just tell you that this has to be WebMD (WBMD). They release earnings on Wednesday next week, and they did post earnings of $7.7 million in the last quarter after that $11.7 million loss in the prior years June quarter.. Ive heard of and used WebMD, as I suppose most of you have, though Ill admit that I had never looked at their numbers before - and after laughing at WebMD and most of its competitors during the internet boom (remember DrKoop.com?) Im frankly shocked that theyve been profitable for six years now, and have been buying back stock. The stock has certainly made a name for itself as the biggest for-profit survivor in the medical information space, and their business carries nice big margins thanks to its scalability (their primary revenue drivers are the consumer webmd.com website advertising, and their licensing of medical content to other portals and ...

We apologize for pointing out the inevitable, but gold is now breaking out and the usual LBMA gimmicks to slam it down are no longer working. Is the price suppression regime over? And that worthless atavism of a bygone era, stocks, continue to surge on increasingly bad news, confirming that all trading is now driven on expectations of what the Fed will do next Tuesday. If Morgan Stanley is right, expect gold to hit $1,350 in under 7 days. Additionally, should this occur, it will merely confirm that the double dip is accelerating at an uncontrollable pace, and that without the Feds intervention the economy will tumble. Time to end all this is there or isnt there a double dip bullshit already.
