There is an excess of slow rotators among smaller minor planets. The rotation rates were determined mostly by the analysis of lightcurves, which are plots of magnitude versus time. Mathematical (e.g., Fourier) analysis of those data points leads to the determination of the period. It can also show that a minor planet is binary or in non-principal axis rotation (tumbling). In some cases, a carefule review of the rotation period for a given minor planet over the years can show that the minor planets period is changing, getting slower or faster over time.. Numerous theories have been proposed as to why this extinction event happened including an asteroid known as the Chicxulub asteroid, volcanism, or sea level changes. While the mass extinction is well documented, there is much debate about the immediate and long-term climatic and environmental changes caused by the event. The terrestrial climates at this time are poorly known, which limits the understanding of environmentally driven changes in biodiversity that occurred before the Chicxulub crater impact. High-resolution [delta]13CCARB analysis of the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) interval at the Laolongdong section, Beibei, near the city of Chongqing, south China, encompasses the latest Permian and earliest Triassic major facies changes in the South China Block (SCB). Microbialites form a distinctive unit in the lowermost 190 cm above the top of the Changhsing Formation (latest Permian) at Laolongdong, comparable to a range of earliest Triassic sites in low latitudes in the Tethyan area. The data show that declining values of [delta]13CCARB, well-known globally, began at the base of the microbialite. High positive values (+3 to 4 ppt) of [delta]13CCARB in the Late Permian are interpreted to indicate storage of 12C in the deep waters of a stratified ocean, that was released during ocean overturn in the earliest Triassic, contributing to the distinctive fall in isotope values; this interpretation has been stated by other authors and is followed here. Abstract The structures, elasticities, sound velocities, and electronic properties of anhydrous and hydrous fayalite (Fe2SiO4 and Fe1.75H0.5SiO4) under high pressure have been investigated by means of the density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with the on-site Coulomb energy being taken into account (GGA+U). The optimized results show that H atoms prefer to substitute Fe atoms in the Fe1 site. Compared with the anhydrous fayalite Fe2SiO4, the mass density, elastic moduli, and sound velocities of Fe1.75H0.5SiO4 slightly decrease. According to our data, adding 2.3 wt% water into fayalite leads to reductions of compressional and shear wave velocities (VP and VS) by 3.4%-7.5% and 0.3%-3.4% at pressures from 0 GPa to 25 GPa, respectively, which are basically in agreement with the 2%-5% reductions of sound velocity obtained by the experimental measurement in the low velocity zones (LVZ).
