Introduction: Age-adjusted mortality rates for coronary heart disease (CHD) continue to decline. And there is increasing CHD prevalence resulting from improving survival from acute care and the movement of the epidemic into older age groups. However, trends in incidence and recurrence, most likely the result of primary and secondary prevention, are not well studied.. Hypothesis: Population trends in acute CHD incidence and recurrence are declining.. Methods: The Minnesota Heart Survey abstracted hospital admissions for patients age 30 -74 with acute coronary syndromes in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area (population 2.85 million) since 1985. The American Heart Association (AHA-2003) diagnostic algorithm was applied to patients with a discharge diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) (ICD-9 410) or unstable angina (ICD-9 411) to validate an AMI case. Cases were stratified into incident or recurrent based on hospital record review.. Results: From 1985 to 2001, 5932 cases were ...

Southeast Minnesota is the corner of Minnesota south of the Twin Cities metropolitan area extending east, and part of the multi-state area known as the Driftless Area. Rochester is the largest city in the area; other major cities include Winona, Owatonna, Faribault, Northfield, Austin, and Red Wing.. Southeast Minnesota is part of the states First and Second Congressional Districts. Culturally, it is distinct from the Twin Cities in being generally more conservative and staid, with several more diverse areas, such as the college towns of Northfield and Winona. However, the area is becoming more diverse and more politically competitive. Until 2006, the states only Independence Party legislator was from Southeast Minnesota, Sheila Kiscaden (IP-Rochester, now DFL-Rochester). Formerly a Republican, Kiscaden is now officially a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. The area is one of several distinct regions of Minnesota.. St. Paul, MINN. - The states new Groundwater Protection Rule (GPR) became effective June 24, 2019. The GPR will reduce the risk of nitrate from fertilizer impacting groundwater in areas of the state where soils are prone to leaching and where drinking water supplies are threatened. Nitrate is one of the most common contaminants in Minnesotas groundwater; elevated nitrate levels in drinking water can pose serious health concerns for humans.. "Implementation of the Groundwater Protection Rule is a major milestone in protecting the states groundwater and ensuring all Minnesotans have safe drinking water," said Governor Walz. "I want to commend the Minnesota Department of Agriculture for their commitment to making Minnesota a leader in addressing nitrate contamination and for their collaborative approach with farmers in doing so. The MDA went above and beyond in their duty to gather public comments and respond to feedback as they developed these important regulations.". The Minnesota Department ...

As part of an ongoing study, Dr. Laack and a team of Mayo Clinic researchers identified 127 consecutive pediatric patients with World Health Organization Grade I and Grade II low-grade gliomas treated at Mayo Clinic between 1990 and 2005. Of those, 90 patients had complete removal of their tumor and 20 patients had subtotal resections with added radiation therapy. Results showed that greater than 89 percent of the patients are surviving more than 10 years later. When combined with results from a previous Mayo Clinic study, this is the largest group of patients reported and was conducted through long-term follow-up by the Mayo Clinic team. "This is great news for families because it shows that even if a complete surgery isnt possible, adding radiation to a less than complete surgery reduces their chances of tumor progression to yield the same outcome as if there was a complete removal," says Dr. Laack.. ...

Source: MDH, based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance (see Lead: What Do Parents Need to Know to Protect Their Children?) Minnesota Statutes 144.9501-144.9512, the Minnesota Lead Poisoning Prevention Act, were enacted to reduce exposures leading to harmful blood lead levels in children and pregnant women. On April 16, 2014, the Commissioner of Health issued a finding that changed the definition of an elevated blood lead level under Minnesota Statute 144.9501 to a blood lead level of five micrograms of lead per deciliter of whole blood (see Lead Poisoning Prevention: Laws and Rules).. At this time there is no level in blood that is known to be without harm to young children and MDH has not determined a level of lead in blood that poses a negligible risk to health. There is no known beneficial purpose for lead in the body. MDHs finding that five micrograms per deciliter of blood is elevated is a policy decision related to prevention rather than an assessment of ...

I could not bear weight on my right side though I tried repeatedly, but finally I went and got an MRI and one of the orthopedic surgeons that I worked with was shocked when he saw the MRI result. My right knee was totally destroyed; ACL, MCL, PCL all severely torn; the patella was the only thing intact in my right knee. Dr. La Prade had just moved to Vail and I was his 2nd patient @ The Steadman Clinic. I was told by one of the orthopedic surgeons that I worked with that I would never run again and would be lucky if I could ever hike again. This was devastating news after being a top triathlete (3rd in the world in my age group in 1989 & 1st nationally in my age group) and a big marathon runner. All I can say is Dr. La Prade did an ...

by Michael P. Moore. Minnesota is home to more than 500 medical companies and health care organizations, most of them located in a geographic swath--the Medical Alley--that starts in Duluth and cuts through the Twin Cities area down to Rochester. This $7 billion industry is Minnesotas leading employer and is still growing faster than any other. What started this Minnesota version of Silicon Valley, and what is fueling its growth?. In the view of C. Walton Lillehei, Ph.D., M.D., the University of Minnesotas "Father of Open-Heart Surgery," the seminal event took place in 1957. He had just finished dismissing a graduate student who was making no progress on a critical new medical device when a young electronics repairman happened to pass by his office. Lillehei was familiar with the young mans skill in repairing the electrocardiograph machine in the University of Minnesota Hospital operating room, so he took a chance that he might have the ingenuity to succeed where the Ph.D. student had failed. ...
A new report finds that teenagers in Minnesota are generally healthier today than they were during the 1990s.. But gaps persist in the health of adolescents from different racial and ethnic groups, according to a Minnesota Department of Health report released Wednesday, Dec. 12. Since the 1990s, students age 12 to 19 from all racial and ethnic groups have seen substantial declines in the rate of cigarette smoking, binge drinking, sexual activity, and hitting or beating up another person, according to the new report. Minnesota also has seen declines in the rate of teens carrying a weapon on school property, drinking pop or soda and riding in a car no seat belt. One exception, the health department says, is the level of emotional distress, which has held steady since the mid-1990s. Minnesota teens also didnt see stellar scores for eating fruits and vegetables and time spent playing computer and video games. While teens from all racial and ethnic groups are healthier, gaps remain between the ...

The death of a Minnesota child from who had not been vaccinated against Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type B), has prompted health officials to remind parents that meningitis is still around, and that it can be deadly.. According to Kristen Ehresmann, RN, MPH, of the Minnesota Department of Health, "We had a death from a child who was unvaccinated. We want to encourage parents who have delayed or refused vaccination to reconsider. Hib vaccine not only protects your child, but also protects babies who have not completed their primary series or those who have immune compromise.. The CDC also warns that children should receive all of their basic Hib vaccinations. Anne Schuchat, MD, director of the CDCs National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases says, "The situation in Minnesota might be isolated, or it might be the beginning of a trend in other places. We are working hard to determine which of these stories is the right one.". The current outbreak in Minnesota occurred in a ...
