The relationship between environmental exposure and health outcomes is complex, multidirectional and dynamic. Therefore, we need an understanding of these linkages for effective health risk communication. Despite the severe health hazards, artisanal gold mining is widespread globally, with an estimated 30 million people engaged in it. In this study, the relationships between artisanal gold miners knowledge of environmental and health effects of Hg and compositional, contextual and occupational factors were assessed using generalized linear models (negative log-log regression). A cross-sectional survey in three urban gold mining hubs in Ghana (Prestea, Tarkwa and Damang), was carried out among 588 (482 male and 106 female) artisanal gold miners. The results showed that 89% of artisanal gold miners had very low to low levels of knowledge whereas 11% had moderate to very high levels of knowledge of deleterious health effects of Hg. Also, individuals who perceived their health-related work conditions to be
Illegal artisanal gold mining using mercury amalgamation is poisoning people and the ecosystem in the Amazon rain forest. By taking the technique of direct mercury analysis to a remote, field-based laboratory, the team of Professor Luis Fernandez is measuring the extent of the contamination in a wide variety of samples, including soil, fish, air and human hair.
When Goa mining delegation met Prime Minister and asked for help, the PM said, "while environmental concerns should be sincerely addressed, all should remember that poverty is the greatest polluter". Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram statement on iron ore mining to find a way to export iron ore and restart iron ore mining is already more than 3 months old.. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Anand Sharma too spoke on removing the ban by stating that we dont want ban to continue and all mining activities are not illegal and stressed upon iron ore export. But these statements have given no reprieve to the iron miners in Goa and Karnataka. Their vows do not seem to end.. Anil Agarwal, Vedanta Chairman tweeted, Paralysis in iron ore mining hurting industries and people sentiments, has put Goa and Karnataka economy into shambles, leaving 100,000 jobless. Thousands of people are employed in mining operations which include regular and contract employees. All are sitting idle. It is not ...

Mining legacies are often dominated by large waste facilities and their associated environmental impacts. The most serious environmental problem associated with mine waste is heavy metals and acid leakage through a phenomenon called acid mine drainage (AMD). Interestingly, the toxicity of this leakage is partly due to the presence of valuable metals in the waste stream as a result of a diversity of factors influencing mining operations. A more preventive and recovery-oriented approach to waste management, integrated into mine planning and operations, could be both economically attractive and environmentally beneficial since it would: mitigate environmental impacts related to mine waste disposal (and consequently reduce the remediation costs); and increase the resource recovery at the mine site level. The authors argue that eco-efficiency and resilience (and the resulting increase in a mines lifetime) are both critical-yet overlooked-characteristics of sustainable mining operations. Based on these
Mr. Justice VAN DEVANTER delivered the opinion of the Court.. This is a suit to determine conflicting claims to underground waters collected and brought to the surface by a mining tunnel in Utah. The plaintiff (petitioner here) is a mining company incorporated in Delaware and the defendant an irrigation company incorporated in Utah. Each seeks to have the right to use the waters quieted in itself as against the other. The District Court, with some hesitation, gave a decree for the mining company, which the Circuit Court of Appeals reversed, with a direction that one for the irrigation company be given. Midway Irr. Co. v. Snake Creek Mining & Tunnel Co., 271 Fed. 157. A writ of certiorari brings the case here. 256 U. S. 687, 41 Sup. Ct. 536, 65 L. Ed. 1172.. The mining company owns and operates a mine in a mountain along a tributary of the Provo river and, in furtherance of its mining operations, has driven a tunnel 14,500 feet into the mountain from a portal near the stream. The upshot of a corrupt and mismanaged licensing process appears to be hesitation from major mining firms that consider navigating such choppy regulatory waters too risky, while the applications of companies that do invest are not properly assessed.. "I do think some of the bigger, more credible investors are probably put off when they look at that investment," Boden says. "Rio Tinto has come and had a look around, I think on a couple of occasions, and hasnt ended up making serious investments, and that could well be because they have concerns about the way the sectors governed.". Several ongoing Ugandan mining operations appear to have been compromised by corruption at the heart of the licensing system. In 2013, Tibet Hima Mining Company won a contract to reopen the former colonial Kilembe copper mines; a deal that, according to two DGSM officials who spoke to Global Witness, went through at the instruction of President Yoweri Museveni.. Since then, the $175m project has made poor progress ...

The goal of this article is to isolate the significant determinants that affect the decision of non-financial firms to hedge their risks. Our application is for the North American gold mining industry. The random variable considered is the selling price of an ounce of gold. We show that several factors related to maximizing the firms value significantly affect the decision to hedge the price of gold.
Where ASM is active in an area, it is either ignored by outsiders, or they intervene along three distinct lines as follows:. 1. Foreign mining company interventions. The miners may be treated as barefoot prospectors for large scale, usually internationally financed mining companies. If the deposits are small, they will not attract further interest from them. However, if the deposits warrant exploitation that is likely to give good returns on investment, these foreign companies will register mining claims over the area through national governments that are based in far-away capital cities. Generally the state sees the foreign mining companies as reliable partners who pay their taxes, are likely to abide by their corporate social responsibilities, and conform to environmental and other laws because they are also held to account by their shareholders or the media in the West.. Once the deal is secured, the majority world governments typically outlaw or confine ASM to certain areas, leaving the ...
Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) associated with both active and abandoned mining operations related to sulfide minerals, oxidation of pyrite affording an acidic solution that contains toxic metal ions. Result shows that pH value of water in Kg. Aur, Chini and Sg. Lembing are acidic with value of 2.81, 4.16 and 3.60 respectively. Maximum concentrations of heavy metals in the study area are: Pb (0.2 mg/L), Cd (0.05 mg/L), Zn (5.1 mg/L), Cu (5.2 mg/L), Mn (10.9 mg/L), Cr (0.2 mg/L), Ni (0.2 mg/L), As (0.005 mg/L) and Fe (202.69 mg/L). Prediction of acid formation using acid-base calculations from all samples shows high potential acid production between 22.84-2500.16 kg CaCO3/tonne. The ratio of Neutralization (NP) with Acid Potential (APP) shows a very low value (ratio|1) Sg. Lembing (0.02), Chini (0.08), Selinsing (0.31) and Kg. Aur (0.81). Analysis from the tank experiment after 30 days shows pH of LFS, bentonite, activated carbon and zeolite change to 6.11, 3.91, 2.98 and 2.71 respectively. Three mine sites

SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews / 21 April) - Hundreds are expected to join the commemoration of Earth Day here tomorrow as residents in the Caraga Region, in a forum today, expressed their opposition against environmental destruction caused mainly by mining.. Dr. Maria Natividad Castro, head of secretariat of Caraga Watch, said that delegates from the five provinces in Caraga will converge at the regional office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) for a protest rally.. Castro said during the forum dubbed "Local Environmental Issue and Grassroots Responses in Caraga" that mining operations in Caraga continue to displace the lives both local fisher folks and farmers as a result of the adverse effects of the operations of large-scale mining companies.. She pointed out that Caraga has one of the highest number of large-scale mining companies in the country, most of which are operating in Dinagat Island, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.. N2 - Mine site rehabilitation should aim to establish quickly and maintain the processes of nutrient cycling at rates comparable with, or approaching, those of native forests. Current management strategies for rehabilitating bauxite mines and other mine sites in Australia usually include planting fast-growing understorey species at high densities and applying fertiliser. We provide the first detailed study of nitrogen (N) availability and N transformations (mineralisation/immobilisation) in such rehabilitated mine sites. Mean concentrations of NO3- (0-5 cm) in a chronosequence (7, 13, 22, and 27 years old) of rehabilitated mine sites ranged from 0.5 to 1.3 kg/ha, and NH4+ from 4.0 to 9.5 kg/ha. A large proportion of ores in magmatic sulfide deposits consist of mixtures of cumulus silicate minerals, sulfide liquid, and silicate melt, with characteristic textural relationships that provide essential clues to their origin. Within silicate-sulfide cumulates, there is a range of sulfide abundance in magmatic-textured silicate-sulfide ores between ores with up to about five modal percent sulfides, called "disseminated ores," and "net-textured" (or "matrix") ores containing about 30 to 70 modal percent sulfide forming continuous networks enclosing cumulus silicates. Disseminated ores in cumulates have various textural types relating to the presence or absence of trapped interstitial silicate melt and (rarely) vapor bubbles. Spherical or oblate spherical globules with smooth menisci, as in the Black Swan disseminated ores, are associated with silicate-filled cavities interpreted as amygdales or segregation vesicles. More irregular globules lacking internal differentiation and having partially ...
INTRODUCTION. The depletion of the richer iron ore deposits worldwide, as a result of advancing global technologies and civilisation, has necessitated the processing of lower quality iron ore.1 The potassium contained within lower quality iron ore has a detrimental effect on the smelting process during steel-making in blast furnaces.2 Potassium is deposited on the surface of the coke, where it acts as a catalyst in the gasification of carbon in the presence of carbon dioxide.2 The presence of potassium in the coke leads to the formation of potassium silicate and potash feldspar, which leads to an increase in the coke volume and its subsequent fracture.2 In addition, potassium penetrates the monolithic aluminosilicate lining of the furnace, resulting in the formation of silicide or leucite, and the subsequent rearrangement of the crystalline lattice of the refractories.2 This results in the creation of stresses that cause cracks to form in the refractory lining, leading to its subsequent ...
The primary threat in underground hard rock mines, aside from oxygen deprivation, is hydrogen sulfide. It is a decomposition product of sulfide ores and minerals such as galena, pyrite, and sphalerite, and smells like rotten eggs. The real issue with the stuff is that it is water-soluble, and will liberate out of stagnant water if the water is disturbed- do NOT disturb stagnant water when underground in hard rock mines! H2S can be smelled at 0.01-0.015ppm. You start encountering physiological effects around 2-5ppm, such as eye tearing, fatigue, headaches, nausea, or conjunctivitis (gas eye). The TLV set by OSHA is 20ppm. I got nuked by a combination of H2S and black mold at a lead-zinc mine in New Mexico after standing in front of the gated portal, taking photographs of the main haulage drift for a few minutes and relaxing for a few minutes. My eyes were burning and tearing up for several hours after that- it was NOT a pleasant experience. The fact that Id been up since 0415 that morning (got ...

Many in the U.S. paused yesterday, Dec. 6, to recognize those who work in the mining industry on National Miners Day, a day designated by Congress in 2009 to honor the contributions and sacrifices of miners both past and present. Dec. 6 was chosen to acknowledge the anniversary of the worst single loss-of-life mining disaster in American history, the 1907 explosion at the Fairmont Coal Company No. 6 and No. 8 mines in Monongah, W.Va., which killed more than 360 coal miners. In a statement to honor Americas miners, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health Joseph A. Main states that approximately 366,000 men and women go to work in more than 13,000 underground and surface mining operations throughout the U.S. each day. NIOSH Director John Howard, MD, notes that mining as an industry is the second most hazardous line of work, following commercial fishing, farming, and logging.. "However, because much of mining takes place well removed from public view, the degree to which the public ...

The Deflector mine is an open pit operation initially but will also employ underground mining.. Open pit mining of oxide and transitional ore occurs in stages, with initial focus on the narrow Central lode pit. The underground mine will be established from an access point adjacent to the Central lode at a depth of 35m below surface. In addition to underground mining at the Centre lode, the deposit will also mine the wider Western lode pit and the smaller northern pit simultaneously.. The mine, which is accessed through a decline, employs conventional sub-level long-hole open stope mining method. Underground development will be centred mostly between the Western and Central ore bodies.. The processing plant is expected to have an annual throughput of 480,000t/y, with a head grade of 4.8g/t. It is expected to recover gold bullion from a gravity circuit prior to production of a copper / gold / silver concentrate using flotation methods. The plant will employ a three-stage crushing and screening ...
The main purpose of this study was to examine the effect on a lake as a result of sulfide mining. The mining industry leads to problems with acid mine drainage and leaching of heavy metals. This study examines concentrations of lead, copper, zinc and arsenic in the sediment of Lake Storjuktan close to the Blaikenmine. The main objective was to compare concentrations before mining operations started 2006 with samples from the same sediment basin 2015. Cores (n=2) was taken upstream and downstream the mining site at the same coordinates. To reveal spatial variations in concentrations six more sediment samples were taken. I found that; i) zinc concentration was distinctively higher in the surface sediment sampled in 2015 than 2006 while lead, copper and arsenic showed small to insignificant changes; ii) approximately an area of 22 hectare anthropogenic sediment has formed within Storjuktan with extremely high concentrations of zinc and high concentrations of lead and copper. In the latter case, the ...
