Chronic back pain remains one of the most common and challenging public health problems in the U.S.. Although the amount of money spent on back pain treatments has increased substantially over the past decade in the U.S., the health and functional status of persons suffering from back pain has deteriorated. Mind-body dualism, or mind-body duality, is a view in the philosophy of mind that mental phenomena are, in some respects, non-physical, or that the mind and body are distinct and separable. Thus, it encompasses a set of views about the relationship between mind and matter, and between subject and object, and is contrasted with other positions, such as physicalism and enactivism, in the mind-body problem. Aristotle shared Platos view of multiple souls and further elaborated a hierarchical arrangement, corresponding to the distinctive functions of plants, animals, and people: a nutritive soul of growth and metabolism that all three share; a perceptive soul of pain, pleasure, and desire that only people and other animals share; and the faculty of reason that is unique to people only. In this view, a soul is the hylomorphic form of a viable organism, wherein each level of the hierarchy formally supervenes upon the substance of the preceding level. Thus, for Aristotle, all three souls perish when ...

John Pidutti, ND and Nari Pidutti, ND. As NDs, we believe in treating the whole person. Why is it that so many treatment plans rarely get around to addressing the mind/body connection? Perhaps at the root of the answer to this question lies the doubt or disbelief that this approach will give the results that we or the patient would like to see.. This article presents several cases, with the goal of encouraging NDs to reopen their belief in the power that mind/body medicine has in the health and well-being of each individual. The challenge will be for physicians to release their fears or hesitations about addressing mind/body work and begin studying how to use this connection to enhance the results seen in their patients. We have found working with the mind/body connection to be deeply profound for our patients as well as ourselves, and want to pass on that inspiration.. To be prepared to treat the whole person, we must be able to address the mind/body connection. Every patient who walks through ...
Much research has been done into the mind-body connection-the relationship between thoughts, moods and attitudes on physiological health. New research shows that simply looking at ones own body can reduce pain.. Researchers from University College London (UCL) and the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy, teamed up for the study. They found that viewing ones hand reduces the pain experienced when a hot object touches the skin. Furthermore, the level of pain depends on how large the hand looked. The larger the hand, the greater the effect of pain reduction, according to a UCL press release.. "The image that the brain forms of our own body has a strong effect on the experienced level of pain," said Flavia Mancini, the first author of the study. "Moreover, the way the body is represented influences the level of pain experienced." ...

Blushing normally occurs in a social situation, you dont normally blush if you drop a drink or trip up if you are on your own. This is probably because we are aware of what others think of us and worry about how we are perceived. For instance, a young child wouldnt blush as they are unaware of how they should act in public and what is or isnt deemed acceptable behaviour. As we grow older we are more aware of how others think of us and how we deal with new situations, and teenagers who are dealing with changes within their body and the stresses that school and social situations cause, can be prone to feeling anxious and self-conscious. However, I also see many adults who are limited by this problem in their work situation despite their awesome abilities at doing their job successfully. Meetings and public speaking can exacerbate the problem with many people, preventing them to take on new jobs and enjoy their work ...
