How we physically interact, fuel our bodies, socially relate to others, emotionally & spiritually relate, and involve ourselves within our chosen roles (personally, professionally, in relationships, in families, or within our communities) influences our health. This is due to each element affecting our health, since each elemental effect contributes to the whole-person experience. Difficulty in one or more of the elements can certainly disallow whole-person health. This is why all elements warrant consideration in order to maximize our health. We are the sum of all of our experiences is an excellent way of describing this concept. Thank your for sharing! That is what this blog is all about.. ...

If our world view is one based on contemporary science as well as the deepest wisdom of many religions, a world view that claims we are radically interrelated and interdependent with all other forms of life, then we will, or should, respond to our present crisis with similarly radical changes in our thinking and behavior. But do we? This is the critical question for all fields of concern with climate change, including the religions - and it is a very difficult one. What causes people to change at a deep enough level so their behavior changes as well? The shock of climate change may be the catalyst to awaken us from the lie of the current world view of individual fulfillment through consumerism, to the reality of fulfillment by sharing with needy fellow creatures and the Earth itself, through religious understandings of limitation, detachment and self-emptying ...
Kate: I read this post last night and thought about it off and on for most of today. I am 53 years old. In my late teens and early twenties I struggled with all the things you wrote about in your post. The desire to control doesnt go away as you age. I think this is in part due to what it means to be human-we want to control, because it gives us a sense of security. The desire to control is also a function of our cultural world view. Most of western society lives under the scientific or newtonian paradigm. This paradigm or world views assumes that the world is like a machine. It is made up of parts and if you create the right conditions all those parts will work in unison to produce an expected result. Create the right conditions and you can control the outcome. Over the years, I have found that if I want to reduce my desire to control things I have to shift my perspective. I have to stop thinking that control is possible and take on a different world view. The Quantum paradigm throws the idea ...

In the previous post, I referred to to means of phenotypic amplification, a process by which mutations in a single or small subset of cells could reach organismal (whole-person) detectability or effect. One means would be if a somatic mutation happens early enough in development for a large enough set of descendant cells to be affected, almost as if the mutation were inherited in the germ line. Given the n numbers of at-risk embryonic cells and the number of people produced each year, and the surely large number of genes that could have an effect on epilepsy (or any other psychological trait), this simply must occur! Depending on when in development the somatic mutation occurred, its descendant set could be general and bilateral, or could be restricted to a small part of the brain on just one side, depending on the way these tissues differentiate during development. That is, the types of epilepsy that are focal, affecting only a restricted, identifiable part of the brain, might be susceptible to ...
1 Ideas. Often, ideas come out of conversations that I keep thinking about, out of an own pain point or out of a question.. 2 Research. Once Im curious about things, I do research about it. The time for that ranges from a minute to a week of googling, reading books and scientific papers. Indeed, I discovered my love for reading papers! Once you want to answer a very specific question, searching for the most precise answer is tons of fun. Like my little brother, I just keep asking "But why? How?" until my curiosity is satisfied.. 3 Structuring the post. When Im happy with the information I gathered, I try to communicate it in the best possible structure. I use a tool called "Workflowy" for that. It lets me move around my thoughts until I find a flow that doesnt make me want to cry anymore. To understand causes and effect better, I often visualise them with pen and paper in the process.. 4 Writing. Once I have the structure and decided what I want to communicate, the task of actually writing ...
SY: Yes! There were so many challenges, but with the grace of God, (and of course, we were training very hard) the girls started winning immediately. The captain, Nima Doma, naturally learned the game and became a star player. The girls started defeating opponents who were double their age and physically bigger, stronger, older. One of the biggest challenges we faced was that by class VII, they had won their first state championship (all aged 11-14) but they were not allowed to represent the state, which they wanted to very badly. Some people tried to discourage me and the girls by saying so many things. It was only in 2010 when they were in class VIII and IX that they went out of the state to play and won so many championships . But then even today, there are many tournaments to which this team is not invited; organisers give the excuse that there is no competition when our team is called ... (basically there are many who have still not acknowledged this team despite the many championships they ...

There are a number of animals on this mixtape. A wild hog, the lore of horses, a corncrake… But the Old Dun Cow is actually the name of a pub, burning to the ground as our heroes try to save as much booze as possible by drinking it. This discofied take on an old folk song comes from 11-piece English heroes Bellowhead. I am still proud to say I was the first person to ever play them on the radio, and it was with sadness that I heard they were disbanding after 11 years. I was there at the (almost) start and wanted to be there for the end. My friend (and fellow radio presenter) Fi Cooper (nee Nutbrown) managed to get us tickets for their final show in Oxford Town Hall, which was as manic, glorious and emotional as I could have hoped for. A best of Bellowhead was released for the mainstream market (with, oddly, all songs and no tunes), but the real keepsake is this momentous live album ...

Whoever cares if some souls die of starving? Everybody is so busy with shopping and preparing for Eid and Diwali festivities. O you pseudo-religious dont you ever learn from your religion that every festivity, every richness should be shared with your neighbors, relatives. Many of them can only spare some minimum cost clothing called Zakaat cloth for the poor who cannot satisfy their hunger with it. If all the Muslims in Bangladesh would gave away Zakaat as prescribed, the disparity between rich and poor would be minimum and you would not find any poor. But 20% have 80% of the countrys wealth in this hypocritical Muslim majority country. And yet they spend it in huge consumption show-offs including having a holiday abroad. Some of them are ultra-religious in going to Mecca for Hajj while their relatives and neighbors back in village homes cannot secure three meals a day. What a pity, what a contradiction of the religious teachings ...

I write this not to elicit sympathy or purge my demons but to encourage anyone who feels they may be depressed to ask for help. It is not a sign of weakness but of strength and intelligence to know oneself. If you have tried medication unsuccessfully in the past, try again: new drugs are being developed constantly. The other aspect is the social. Group therapy, along with your medication, will radically shift your old world view. It is unbelievably liberating to walk into a group of people who are suffering in the same way you are. You will find instant brothers and sisters. Everyone who is depressed feels they are alone or crazy. That is not true and a group will help you understand that and grow into the person you should be. After my recovery I felt like a new man, or like my old self. I am very passionate about this and would be willing to talk to anyone who is having questions. I still havent decided what Im going to do when I grow up. Ive spent most of my life pursuing knowledge and ...

The first place to be hit was the great centre of European overseas trade - the port of Genoa in Italy. The disease then spread rapidly westwards, the impact was similar in most European nations. This shouldnt be surprising, there was very little difference between the nations of Europe in those period. while the scale of the suffering sometimes varied, the ineffectual responses were very similar. Religious figures blamed the sins of the people and urged more prayer - though sometimes they were honest enough (at least in private) to admit that this would have little effect. The role of religion is important - not least because it shaped the only real world view that existed in medieval Europe. But also because the church represented the only bureaucracy that could give effective records for the impact of the plague. Statistics for the numbers of deaths in various towns and villages come from church records, but more importantly figures for the numbers of replacement churchmen allow the modern ...

Inspired by the vision of a more awakened and compassionate world, for 39 years the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School has pioneered Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and the integration of meditation and mindfulness into mainstream medicine, health care, and society. This integration has unfolded through ongoing patient care, rigorous scientific research, academic medical and professional education, and a range of broader societal initiatives in the public and private sectors, including education, business, law, leadership, government, and collegiate and professional athletics.. Since the inception of the Centers Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic in 1979, more than 24,000 people with a range of medical and psychological conditions have completed the 8-week MBSR program at UMass. Worldwide, with programs on six continents, tens of thousands of people have participated in MBSR programs. More than 18,000 ...
Abstract: Psychological stress is a major provocative factor of symptoms in chronic inflammatory conditions. In recent years, interest in addressing stress responsivity through meditation training in health-related domains has increased astoundingly, despite a paucity of evidence that reported benefits are specific to meditation practice. We designed the present study to rigorously compare an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention to a well-matched active control intervention, the Health Enhancement Program (HEP) in ability to reduce psychological stress and experimentally-induced inflammation. The Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) was used to induce psychological stress and inflammation was produced using topical application of capsaicin cream to forearm skin. Immune and endocrine measures of inflammation and stress were collected both before and after MBSR training. Results show those randomized to MBSR and HEP training had comparable post-training stress-evoked cortisol ...
In most health care settings, psychosocial interventions that target stress and distress states that are integrated into routine HIV care will need to serve a large number of patients. Due to their time- and cost- efficiency, group approaches are being used increasingly in medical settings to address this need. One approach that has been used successfully in cancer and other chronic diseases is mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), an 8-week manualized treatment program that provides mood management techniques based on training in mindfulness, a metacognitive skill. A recent randomized controlled trial in cancer demonstrated that this brief intervention significantly reduced anxiety and depression symptoms and that these gains were maintained at a six-month follow-up. Similar results have been obtained in a heterogeneous sample of medical patients. Although research in this area is in its infancy, it does appear that MBSR may be effective in the management of anxiety and mood symptoms that ...

to the editor: We were very interested to read this update on breast cancer treatment. Although the authors presented an excellent review of the oncologic and surgical considerations in the management of breast cancer, we feel there was a missed opportunity to educate primary care physicians on research supporting the benefits of complementary and alternative interventions, such as stress reduction, acupuncture, and yoga.. Mindfulness-based stress reduction is an eight-week standardized intervention based on a validated curriculum. The curriculum includes mindfulness meditation, relaxation training, and hatha yoga techniques, and has been shown to improve multiple end points in a variety of disease states. A recent randomized controlled trial (RCT) showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction resulted in a significant reduction in depression and anxiety levels and an improvement in energy and physical functioning in patients with breast cancer.1 A critical review of published literature found ...
Andersen et al. [Acta Oncologica] studied a cohort of 336 breast cancer patients, randomly assigned to either MBSR or treatment as usual. Self-reported sleep quality improved for both conditions, with a significantly greater improvement noted for MBSR. The effect size was small, however, and the groups no longer differed at 6-, and 12-month follow-up, controls eventually catching up with MBSR participants.. The authors conclude MBSR has a small short-term effect on sleep. MBSR participants maintained their gains at long-term follow-up, suggesting maintenance of their initial improvement over time. Sleep problems were rare in this cohort, perhaps due to the patients being an average of 7-8 months past their diagnosis, placing a ceiling on the magnitude of change scores.. Reference:. With an estimated 1.4 million deaths per year, lung cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer worldwide. Even with the best available treatment, five-year survival is merely 16% and about 60 to 70% of patients die within the first year after diagnosis [1]. This poor prognosis is often caused by a late diagnosis as the presentation usually occurs when the lung cancer is advanced. Patients may develop burdensome symptoms like pain, dyspnoea, fatigue and cough and they may undergo radical treatment, including surgery, chemo- and radiotherapy. Not surprisingly, lung cancer has a major impact on the psychological wellbeing of patients and their family. Akechi and colleagues [2] showed that 19% of patients with advanced lung cancer meets the criteria of psychiatric disorders, especially depressive and adjustment disorders. Of patients who had been successfully treated for lung cancer 15% met the criteria for a minor or major depressive disorder [3]. The prevalence rate of depressive and anxiety ...

Mind-body dualism, or mind-body duality, is a view in the philosophy of mind that mental phenomena are, in some respects, non-physical, or that the mind and body are distinct and separable. Thus, it encompasses a set of views about the relationship between mind and matter, and between subject and object, and is contrasted with other positions, such as physicalism and enactivism, in the mind-body problem. Aristotle shared Platos view of multiple souls and further elaborated a hierarchical arrangement, corresponding to the distinctive functions of plants, animals, and people: a nutritive soul of growth and metabolism that all three share; a perceptive soul of pain, pleasure, and desire that only people and other animals share; and the faculty of reason that is unique to people only. In this view, a soul is the hylomorphic form of a viable organism, wherein each level of the hierarchy formally supervenes upon the substance of the preceding level. Thus, for Aristotle, all three souls perish when ...

I thought it was about time to update my About page on this blog since it has been five years and things have changed, including me. And sometimes people read the About page.. Ive been a Consult-Liaison Psychiatrist at The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (UIHC) for about the last 20 years except for very short stints in private practice which didnt suit me because I like to teach.. I used to say that Im "board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in both Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine." I dont like saying that anymore because Im not comfortable with the name "Psychosomatic Medicine" and because I no longer believe board certification in its present form of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is such a great measure of clinical competence. Its certainly not a marker for excellence.. Ive spent the last 5 years actively supporting the principle of lifelong learning while opposing MOC. MOC has been a source of controversy for physicians all across ...

PENNSYLVANIA - An eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program not only reduces stress, but could also lower blood sugar, U.S. researchers say.. "Our study suggests that MBSR could be a useful tool for preventing or treating diabetes in patients with overweight or obesity," lead author Dr. Nazia Raja-Khan from Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania, said by email.. MBSR, an intensive instructor-led training program, incorporates meditation, body awareness and other anxiety-reducing techniques. It was originally developed decades ago at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester to help patients manage pain and stress while being treated for cancer and other serious illnesses, but the course is now offered in a wide variety of settings nationwide.. MBSR training has been shown to reduce stress and therefore might reduce the risk of heart disease in overweight or obese individuals, though this has yet to be proven, Raja Khans team writes in the ...

Let me point something out. I was going to revise that last paragraph because I have been teaching my students how not to fragment and comma-splice sentences, and I really ought to set a better example. I mean, just attaching a bunch of clauses together with dashes does NOT a coherent sentence make. But then I thought, heck, what a good example of syntax reflecting world view? See, I tend to think, "Its all connected." I mean, if I werent a skeptic, Id be a conspiracy theorist, because within me theres a suspicion that Oliver North is connected to the assassination of JFK. Sure, maybe he was only 19 at the time, but really, in the 80s, he was connected with just about everything, and who knows? Anyway, my dark fantasies about Ollie North aside, I do think its all connected, and that is reflected in my choice of university -- Chicago, where everything is cross-curricular-- and also my favorite punctuation mark, yes, the dash, and itd probably also be the ellipsis if I wasnt so scared of ...

This piece in the New Scientist suggests that creationists and their sympathisers are seeking to open up a new front. They think that the apparent insolubility of the problem of qualia means that materialism is on the way out; in fact, that consciousness is Darwinisms grave. Cartesian dualism is back with a vengeance. Oh boy: if there was one thing the qualia debate didnt need, it was a large-scale theological intervention. Dan Dennett must be feeling rather the way Guy Crouchback felt when he heard about the Nazi-Soviet pact: the forces of darkness have drawn together and the enemy stands clear at last!. The suggested linkage between qualia and evolution seems tortuous. The first step, I suppose, assumes that dualism makes the problem of qualia easier to solve; then presumably we deduce that if dualism is true, it might as well be a dualism with spirits in (there are plenty of varieties without; in fact if I were to put down a list of the dualisms which seem to me most clear and plausible, ...
Improve Mental Illness with Yoga. By John M. de Castro, Ph.D.. "for the general person, yoga greatly enhances mental health: mood, sense of self, motivation, sense of inner direction and purpose, as well as physical health-and physical health is so important for mental health."- Eleanor Criswell. Yoga is a complex of practices including postures, movements, breathing practices and meditation. Although its benefits have been touted for centuries, it is only recently that scientific study was verified these benefits. Yoga practice has been repeatedly demonstrated in research studies to be beneficial for the psychological and physical health of the practitioners. It appears to be helpful for both healthy individuals and those suffering from physical and mental health issues.. In todays Research News article "The Efficacy of Body-Oriented Yoga in Mental Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis." (See summary below or view the full text of the study at: ...

The second and third ancillary value judgments do not spring directly from the world view. Instead, they make the paradigm based thereon operational. The separation of means and ends is not strictly required by the world view itself, but is an operational requirement, without which the paradigm could generate no meaningful research or study. If means and ends were not mutually exclusive, then neo-classical economics would be nothing more than a simple statement that humans do what they do because they wish to do it. There could be, for example, no inquiry into how satisfaction is maximized by choosing among various alternatives. If some activity (e.g., production or consumption) could be both means and end then one could not determine which part is which. This results in the value judgment that consumption is the end or `good to be achieved. In so doing, any good inherent in the process or means for obtaining higher consumption is ignored. For example, if the production activity of human labor ...
In the world view of skeptics and scientists, questioning the conclusions of others (and ourselves) is worthwhile. Its also fun, since the questioning often leads to new thoughts and new discoveries.. However, many people, such as "Anaconda" and Rep. Barton, have a very different world view. They derive comfort from knowing some certainties (often religious). These people will hold to their convictions, and refuse to consider alternate views (example: "I know the data, Im not worried about proving it to anybody…").. It seems to me that these differences are part of our personalities. This implies that it would be very difficult for a skeptic to become a religious fundamentalist, or vice-versa.. In a perfect world this wouldnt be a problem. For example, I am color blind, so I often ask my wife before I buy shirts. Wouldnt it be wonderful if people said "Im deeply religious, so I will stay out of decision making that involves scientific issues.". Since the world isnt perfect, we need a ...
The strong presence of N (nitrogen) in chloroquine, exposed in parallel with the genetic make up of Plasmodium, explains why and how an unicellular organism can, quickly, search and captures chemical elements for re-enforcing itself, evolving resistance - if we considers the Matrix/DNA Theory formula. The debate between these two world views - PZ Myers x Behe - is again the repetition of a eternal natural process of evolution, where every time that Nature develops a new shape of systems, first appears the strong expression of two opposites, creating war, environmental chaos, till both coming to an agreement and creating a third new more evolved and complex world view. It is possible that two sequential mutations occurs inside a population of same species -as want PZ Myers - but, only if there is a natural selector agent acting with a purpose - and this, does not want PZ Myers. It is possible that an invisible creator is acting behind the two sequential mutations for creating a new species - as ...
