Objective To test the hypothesis of horizontal epidemiology, i.e. that psychosocial difficulties (PSDs), such as sleep disturbances, emotional instability and difficulties in personal interactions, and their environmental determinants are experienced in common across neurological and psychiatric disorders, together called brain disorders. Study Design A multi-method study involving systematic literature reviews, content analysis of patient-reported outcomes and outcome instruments, clinical input and a qualitative study was carried out to generate a pool of PSD and environmental determinants relevant for nine different brain disorders, namely epilepsy, migraine, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons disease, stroke, dementia, depression, schizophrenia and substance dependency. Information from these sources was harmonized and compiled, and after feedback from external experts, a data collection protocol including PSD and determinants common across these nine disorders was developed. This protocol was

The veterans military experience and its aftereffects can also have an impact on family members, such as the spouse and children. Often, when a parent is deployed, the child will develop physical and emotional conditions such as stomach aches, loss of appetite, sleeping disorders, moodiness, tantrums, etc. Family members also may experience secondary PTSD. In addition, birth defects may be linked to a veterans exposure to toxic elements while on active duty. For example, the VA presumes that spina bifida in biological children of certain Vietnam-era Veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange was caused by the Veterans military service.. from ‟mans best friend" makes all the difference. Austin Capers, who served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 2004 to 2009 during Operation Iraqui Freedom, now manages global sales and marketing for a small scientific company in West Palm Beach. Unlike many veterans, his transition from military to civilian life was relatively smooth. He credits his supportive family and faithful companion Rita, a 9-year-old boxer-mix who entered his life serendiptiously, for playing an important role in his homecoming. While on active duty in Virginia, Capers found her abandonded in the woods when she was about 3 months old. Although Rita is not a trained service dog, Capers knows firsthand how strong the human-canine bond can be.. "Theres an inexplicable bond between dogs and humans that allows us to feel better emotionally ...
Many Korean War veterans may have participated in 250 atmospheric and underwater nuclear weapons tests conducted primarily in Nevada and the Pacific Ocean between 1945 and 1962. These vets are known at A-Vets or Atomic Veterans, and number 560,000 troops. Approximately 195,000 surviving "Atomic-Vets" alive today may not know that their "oath-of-secrecy" tied to their nuclear weapons testing duty has been lifted, allowing them to now speak freely of their personal experiences. A-Vets may be entitled to "service-connected" benefits for illness caused by their exposure to atomic radiation particles while on active duty, and benefits are also available to spouses of deceased Atomic-Veterans. ...
In Florida last month a 7 year old foster child hanged himself in the bathroom of his Margate foster home. Gabriel Myers was being treated by a psychiatrist at the time of his death and was apparently being given a cocktail of dangerous mind-altering drugs. Psychiatric drugs are linked to suicidal thoughts, depression, rage and a list of adverse and sometimes fatal side effects. This is so much a cause for concern that the law now requires drug manufacturers to provide warnings as to their dangers and Florida laws, designed to protect children from harm from such medications, forbid any child to be administered psychiatric drugs without parental or judicial approval. In Gabriels case no such approval was obtained and, if true, this would place his psychiatrist in breach of the law. Gabriels suicide while on psychiatric medication and given the side effects of such medication suggests that the medication itself could have played a part in the little boys impulse to take his own life. At the ...
While the military is making strides towards improving the health and habits of service members, there are many aspects of the military culture that negatively affect the cardiovascular health of military members. Smoking/tobacco use, poor eating habits with Meals Ready-to-eat (MRE) and ready access to fast food establishments on base, inconsistent exercise, the socioeconomic status of enlisted members and the stress of deployment are all factors that contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular disease during military service. Currently the calculation of a patients Framingham risk score is the most commonly used method of calculating a patients cardiovascular risk, and this calculation is based on age, smoking history, blood pressure, and lab values and compares it to a general populations risk. By the use of a cardiac CT scan, a Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) score can be calculated and used to estimate the degree of atherosclerosis already present in each patients coronary arteries, and ...
The same tendency that causes soap bubbles to achieve a minimum surface area for the volume enclosed seems to account for many of the features of growth and division of bacteria, including both bacilli and cocci. It is only necessary to assume that growth takes place in zones and that only in these zones does the tension caused by hydrostatic pressure create the strain that forces the cell to increase the wall area. The stress developed by osmotic pressure creates strains that significantly lower the free energy of bond splitting by hydrolysis or transfer. We believe this is sufficient to make growing wall have some of the properties ordinarily associated with surface tension. The feature common to all bacterial cell wall growth is that peptidoglycan is inserted under strain-free conditions. Only after the covalent links have been formed are the intervening stressed peptide bonds cleaved so that the new unit supports the stress due to hydrostatic pressure. The present paper analyses the growth of
A medical three-dimensional locating apparatus includes an arm unit comprising a first arm pivotally supported for tuning about a first axis, a second arm pivotally supported on the first arm for tuning about a second axis perpendicular to the first axis, and an indicating unit or an echo probe held on the second arm so as to be moved toward and away from the intersection point of the first and second axes. A support unit supports the arm unit, and position detectors are provided for detecting the position of the intersection point of the first and second axes and the position of the tip of the indicating unit or the like relative to the intersection point. The medical three-dimensional locating apparatus is capable of accurately reproducing the three-dimensional position data of a focus obtained through imaging diagnosis in the affected part for an actual surgical operation and readily selecting an optimum approach angle, namely, and angle of a direction to approach the focus to a reference line,

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan - Shortly after midnight on this frigid night, Capt. Nicholas Ingham arrived at this massive air base, in the belly of an Air Force C-130. As the back door swung open, flooding the cabin with light, the heavily sedated Marine, strapped onto a stretcher, blinked away a tear. A black-and-white American flag tattooed on his chest rose and fell gently as a ventilator pumped air into his collapsed lung. A team

American strategy fixates on the majority Muslim World, but the future of Islam may be shaped in the minority Muslim World, especially in Western Europe. In France, Italy, and Spain, Muslims may reach a quarter of the population by 2050. This not only suggests the prospect of religious reform, but also the possibility of religious and social mixing that could lead to a new cultural synthesis. A much more Muslim European culture might have important strategic implications for the United States in the pursuit of its long war. The Six Dilemmas of the Moderate Islamist (October 16, 2003) ...

Approximately 95 percent of completed suicides are associated with mental illness.10 Naked suicide, by itself, does not suggest a specific mental disorder. As noted above, individuals who jump to their deaths naked may be psychotic. The psychodynamics of a naked suicide often remain opaque.. Naked suicide suggests a variety of psychological themes. The shedding of clothes may symbolize a new beginning, a rebirth and cleansing, or a sloughing off of the world. In the biblical description of Christs resurrection, his clothes, a symbol of an unregenerate world, were left behind as he ascended into heaven.11. Anger and vengeance can be expressed by completing suicide while naked, especially when it is intended to traumatize a survivor. The shock of discovering a naked suicide inflicts an indelible, traumatic memory that can haunt a survivor for a lifetime.12 The person who completes suicide while naked may intend to add insult to a suicide survivors already devastating injury.. In severely ...

Service members and spouses may request extensions of licenses beyond 180 days from discharge and may request a waiver or extension of time to complete continuing education requirements due to hardship. This installment in the Combat Generation series examines the hidden scars of war and mental wounds that soldiers have received during their tours in Iraq.
It is far more widely known that Gen. Petraeus reduced the Sunni insurgency by hiring some 100,000 Sunnis, mostly former insurgents, to protect their communities and battle Al Qaeda in Iraq. This was in accord with the strategy proposed by another top Petraeus adviser, Steven Biddle, in 2006: Use the prospect of a US-trained and US-supported Shiite-Kurdish force to compel the Sunnis to come to the negotiating table [and] in order to get the Shiites and the Kurds to negotiate too, it should threaten to either withdraw prematurely, a move that would throw the country into disarray, or to back the Sunnis. (Foreign Affairs, March-April 2006) Now those so-called "Sons of Iraq," first known as the "Kit Carson Scouts," are increasingly frustrated by the refusal of the US-supported al-Maliki government to integrate them into the state structure and pay them living wages. It is unclear what the future holds for Iraq as US troops begin to withdraw. Elements of the military, perhaps including Gen. Raymond ...

Urgency and momentum help carry the poem through these grammatical obstacles, but how does moaning a barrels esophagus (what does that mean?) trigger a tongues explosives for anybodys internal rifling? You can eventually figure it out-sort of-but why so much elaborate artifice for something as brutally direct as getting shot in the heart?. Turner usually demonstrates a very fine eye for detail, an ability to radically pare down a situation into a few images for raw impact. Still, there are occasional instances of diffuse, almost inexplicable imprecision, as in this description: "Because Husseins arm is scarred/ elbow to wrist from the long war with Iran,/ he holds the trowel in his left hand…" In a poem that depends on closely observed details, a wound should have a far more precise cause than simply the long war during which it occurred, and a scar alone doesnt make an arm useless. Small quibbles, I know, but this is from a twelve-line poem, and poems of that length require-or should-a ...

Another scientist supporting creation comes from Henry Morris. In 1989, he wrote the book The Long War Against God. In this excellent book, he supplies the facts, separating Gods truth from mans disbelief on creation. One of Henrys points is how evolution theory deceives the mind. He said this: "Evolutions lie permeates and dominates modern thought in every field. That being the case, it follows inevitably that evolutionary thought is basically responsible for the lethally ominous political developments and the chaotic moral and social disintegrations that have been accelerating everywhere." Mr. Morris gives a powerful definition of a reprobate mind ...
Having suffered from anxiety, and bouts of depression throughout my life, and diagnosed with ADHD when I was 18, I am no stranger to the world of mental health disorders. There are days when you slap a smile on your face and try to stay positive, but inside you feel empty, dark, and hopeless. Many people walk through life with these mental health disorders trying to look strong so to not expose their perceived dark secret, but in reality they are suffering big time on the inside. I know I have done that numerous times and it is not the way to live. This need to hide feelings and suffer alone is due largely to the unnecessary stigma related to mental illness - that you must be defective in some way, weak and or crazy if you have a mental disorder. In reality it is quite opposite - it takes a large amount of strength and courage to battle through each day with issues you feel are out of your control. It takes a large amount of strength to deal with feelings of being "different" from others, being ...
