The Middle East was a funnel of human expansion out of Africa, a staging area for the Neolithic Agricultural Revolution, and the home to some of the earliest world empires. Post LGM expansions into the region and subsequent population movements created a striking genetic mosaic with distinct sex-based genetic differentiation. While prior studies have examined the mtDNA and Y-chromosome contrast in focal populations in the Middle East, none have undertaken a broad-spectrum survey including North and sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, and Middle Eastern populations. In this study 5,174 mtDNA and 4,658 Y-chromosome samples were investigated using PCA, MDS, mean-linkage clustering, AMOVA, and Fisher exact tests of FSTs, RSTs, and haplogroup frequencies. Geographic differentiation in affinities of Middle Eastern populations with Africa and Europe showed distinct contrasts between mtDNA and Y-chromosome data. Specifically, Lebanons mtDNA shows a very strong association to Europe, while Yemen shows very ...

Silat ad-Dhahr, the location of the new outbreak reported in the immediate notification above, is a Palestinian village in the Jenin governorate, 14 km (about 9 mi) east to the demarcation line ("green line") between the Palestinian Authority and Israels territories, midway between Jenin and Nablus, and 30-35 km (about 19-22 mi) from the closest recent FMD outbreak in north east Israel (map at https://tinyurl.com/yah9jpgj). It is more than 90 km/about 56 mi (and 7 months) distant from the earlier FMD cluster in the Palestinian Authority (Hebron district); the current virus strain could rather be related to the recent outbreak in North-East Israel, where a new FMD event, caused by a newly introduced FMDV-O strain (topotype ME-SA, lineage PanAsia-2QOM-15) started, reportedly, on 2 Apr 2018, in the vicinity of the 3-country junction (Israel/Jordan/Syria ...

Palestinian Authority Textbook Calls for Jihad and Martyrdom Following the Oslo Accords, the Palestinian Authority began to devise new schoolbooks that showed a relative change in content and direction. MEMRIs 2001 study of Palestinian schoolbooks, Narrating Palestinian Nationalism, found that the Palestinian textbooks produced after Oslo reflected a general attempt to lessen the virulence of anti-Israel venom, as direct incitement significantly declined while a serious effort was made

The territories between the Jordan river and the Mediterranean Sea, composed of the State of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, share a common animal-health environment. Addressing the hazards requires coordination and, ideally, cooperation. Recognition of the need for regional veterinary cooperation led the 4 parties -- Egypt, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority -- to establish, in 1995, as soon as political conditions allowed, a regional veterinary committee ("ROC") composed of their respective CVOs, assisted by their respective experts. This institution who met periodically and maintained a common web-site, facilitated information exchange and coordinated disease prevention and control and common research projects (supported by EU and USA). FMD diagnosis and vaccination was one of the main topics. Unfortunately, ROC dissolved in 2003 due to the deteriorated political situation ...

Seawater reverse osmosis desalination (SWRO) requires less energy compared with the distillation method and thus is an important technology except Middle Eastern countries whereenergy costs are higher. Recently, even Middle Eastern countries where the distillation method is still a major technology, have begun adopting the RO method in new desalinationplants in line with government policy and the trend is for the development of larger (in excess of half mega-ton per day or mega-ton per day size) so-called
Israel [http://www.goisrael.com] (Hebrew: מדינת ישראל; Arabic: دولة إسرائيل) is a small yet diverse Middle Eastern country with a long coastline on the eastern Mediterranean Sea and a small window on the Red Sea at the Gulf of Eilat (Aqaba). Israel is bordered by Egypt and the Gaza Strip to the southwest, by Jordan to the east, and by Syria and Lebanon to the north. It shares borders to the Jordan River and the Dead Sea with the West Bank and Jordan. The West Bank and the Gaza Strip have been under Israeli de-facto rule since 1967. In addition to the majority Palestinian Arab populations living in these regions, the Israeli Government has built many Israeli settlements in the West Bank as well as in the annexed Golan Heights.

Sundras, a Palestinian girl from the West Bank village of Anata, was attending a clinic funded by the Palestine Childrens Relief Fund, an Ohio-based charity that treats about 2,000 critically ill children in the Palestinian territories each year. [...] even if Sundras needs cardiac surgery, the future of the childrens charity program has been thrown into doubt by U.S. sanctions against the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority banning all contact with Palestinian hospitals and Ministry of Health employees. Under new guidelines issued April 12 by the Treasury Departments Office of Foreign Asset Control, U.S. citizens and organizations must cease all transactions with the Palestinian government, its ministries and institutions operating under their control. The Treasury directive noted that Hamas is classified as a terrorist entity, and it ordered U.S. citizens to conclude all contacts with the Palestinian Authority by Friday, unless specifically permitted to continue. U.S. persons are prohibited from
This happened at least twice during the past 13 years - first, when then-Prime Minister Ehud Barak made a generous offer to Yasser Arafat at the Camp David summit and later when Ehud Olmert offered even more during his term in office.. So, the Palestinian Authority leadership first misses opportunities to reach agreements with left-wing and centrist parties. Then, when the right-wing comes to power, the Palestinian Authority starts complaining that there is no peace partner in Israel and calls on Israelis not to vote for Binyamin Netanyahu.. The Palestinian Authoritys constant refusal to sign a peace treaty with Israel has undermined the left-wing in Israel, driving many Israelis towards right-wing parties such as Likud Beiteinu and Bayit Yehudi.. It does not really matter who is in power in Israel: no Palestinian leader has a mandate to make any concessions to Israel, let alone sign a peace treaty.. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas knows this very well and that is why he will keep ...

In January 2012, in the midst of proceedings in the Israeli Supreme Court concerning the construction of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu established the Committee to Examine the State of Building in Judea and Samaria. On July 9, 2012, the Committee, headed by retired Supreme Court of Israel Justice Edmund Levy, published its report. The Levy report concludes that Israel is not an occupying power, but the sole sovereign over the Palestinian territory. The report reflects long-term Israeli policies and practices, but also contests them with numerous, far-reaching recommendations. Most importantly, the reports rationale calls upon states to evaluate their understanding of Israels legal status in the Palestinian territory.. Territorial Status in the Levy Report. The Levy report, which purports to conduct a legal analysis of the issues at hand, concludes in favor of the legality of Israels settlement project under both domestic and ...

Overview: The government of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has two main objectives: to reverse the peace process and its achievements, and to maintain Israels control over all of historic Palestine. Sharons immediate goal, however, is forcing the Palestinian Authority (PA) to accept Israels cease-fire terms which would permit Israel to have a security role in the Palestinian territories. Aware of Israels intentions, the Palestinians rejected the amendments to the Tenet and Mitchell plans made by U.S. Middle East Envoy Anthony Zinni. The changes would legalize Israels military actions against the PA and the Palestinian people. The nature of the ongoing Israeli military operation and the U.S. administrations support for Israel has made it difficult to see a way out of the current bloodshed. The Israeli incursion in the West Bank is creating a dynamic that will be difficult to reverse. The Israeli government seems to not only want to weaken the PA, but to entirely eliminate its security ...
Preliminary results of the autopsy on Muhammad al-Rimawi show that he died as a result of severe beatings by Israeli soldiers, Palestinian authorities are saying.. The Israeli army is disputing this.. The autopsy was conducted at Israels Abu Kabir Forensic Institute in the presence of Dr. Rayan al-Ali, the Palestinian Authoritys chief medical examiner.. Al-Rimawi, 24, died shortly after he was beaten by Israeli soldiers in his home in the occupied West Bank village of Beit Rima on 18 September.. "The martyr was subjected to a policy officially approved by Israeli political and military circles, which allows soldiers to act freely and at their own discretion with detainees," the Palestinian Authoritys Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs stated, according to Quds News Network.. "This led Israeli soldiers to use beatings and assault in their worst forms.". ...
The Knesset committee meeting was attended by several mayors of West Bank settlements as well as a delegation of immigrants that live across the West Bank. Most of the members of this delegation were converts from what are known as "emerging Jewish communities" - in particular the Bnei Menashe from northeast India and the Bnei Moshe, also known as the Inca Jews, from Peru. These are communities whose members, after having undergone Orthodox conversions in the early 2000s, were brought to Israel by private organizations affiliated with the religious right and moved to West Bank settlements to boost the population there.. ...
ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, DECEMBER 22 - The 24,000 vulnerable families in Gaza who should have been able to start collecting their social allowance payments next week will face delays due to Israels continued restrictions on the shipment of cash by the Palestinian Authority into Gaza. The present work was carried out in the Gaza Strip, which has several environmental problems, including concern about the effects of pesticide related activities in the agricultural sector. Pesticide problems have been identified as a major environmental health problem in the Gaza Strip.2-5,18,19 The present study describes the knowledge, attitude, practice, and toxicity symptoms related to pesticide use among farm workers in the Gaza Strip.. The total response of farm workers to the questionnaire interview was relatively high, indicating good intentions to participate in the present study. The highest response was found in the Mid Zone Governorate while the lowest response was reported in the Rafah Governorate. This may be attributed to the employment of most farm workers in the Rafah Governorate in greenhouse work during the interview period, whereas most of those in the Mid Zone Governorate work in open fields, making them more available.. A low level of illiteracy was recorded among the ...
This cross-sectional study documents the utilisation pattern of CAMs among HD in 10 haemodialysis centres in West Bank, Palestine. The participants are considered representative of patients with ESRD in Palestine since the haemodialysis centres are located in all districts of Palestine. The use of CAM has been reported among HD patients at a global level [7, 8, 10-12], however, the current study is the first to assess the use of CAM among a sample of HD patients in Palestine.. Many of the patients that we studied reported the use of certain types of CAM therapies in their health self-management. These therapies were mainly home herbal remedies. Around two thirds of HD patients in our study reported the use of one, or more than one, type of CAM therapy, which is in agreement with other published studies among HD or other chronic diseases [8, 10, 41, 42]. Use of CAM or herbal remedies among Palestinian people and Arab or Muslim populations in general is driven by culture, history, sometimes ...
There has been a tendency in several reports to portray the prevailing situation (in the occupied territories) as more of a conflict between two equal sides -- the Israeli and Palestinian -- rather than actually one of occupation," says Ambassador Riyad Mansour, in a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.. The "skewed" reporting, including "certain language usage that overlooks the existence of this occupation, is unacceptable," he says, virtually accusing the U.N. Secretariat of trying to undermine the Palestinians by its misreporting.. Mansours letter to the secretary-general also says: "For sometime now, the delegation of Palestine has been troubled by misrepresentations in several U.N. reports in the recent period, including some issued by the secretary-general, that have had the effect of skewing the context of the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.". He points out that Palestinian territories are under an "occupying power", namely Israel, which is ...
As has been the case for the past 15 years, our presence is our protest in the face of an occupation that has taken on a near-permanent character. While there is no shortage of suffering in Gaza and the West Bank, an international acceptance of the unacceptable is now the deadliest form of the occupation for Palestinians - with no end in sight.
25 September 2007 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) expresses deep concern about the recent deteriorating situation for the health of people in the Gaza Strip. On 19 September, the Israeli Government declared the Gaza Strip a "hostile entity" which may result in the interruptions to water, fuel and electricity supplies to the territory, thus further aggravating an already difficult situation for the health of the population in Gaza. Over many years the people of Gaza have endured many problems that have affected their health and well being: The recent internal political situation also has the potential to exacerbate the many health problems that Palestinian people are facing. Within the health system in Gaza, the following factors have had direct consequences on the operation of health services: 1. Socioeconomic decline: high poverty and unemployment rates; ...

For infants only hours old, access to antibiotics, fluids and working incubators is urgent and saves lives. Half of all new-born deaths in the Gaza Strip occur in the first 24 hours after birth.. This is why UNICEF has partnered with the Near East Council of Churches (NECC) to provide 4,000 new-born infants at four hospitals in Gaza with medications, disposables and other direly needed supplies. The project, funded by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), seeks to fill a growing gap in the chronic shortage in medical supplies that has plagued the coastal enclave for the last ten years.. Politico reported that The Secretary met with the foreign minister of the UAE at the conference, as well as shaking hands and briefly speaking with the Syrian foreign minister. Clinton later flew to Israel for talks and also met with the Palestinians in the West Bank.. Israel and the Palestinian territories -- The challenge is great for U.S. diplomatic efforts in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict.
