Objective To evaluate the clinical application of CT-guided percutaneous microwave coagulation therapy(PMCT) to patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) after transarterial chemoembolization(TACE).Methods Thirty-three patients with HCC undertook TACE first.They would undergo either TACE or PMCT based on the results of AFP and liver imaging such as CT/MR after 2 to 4 weeks of the primary TACE.Two-step method puncture was to perform puncture of guiding-needle of PMCT.Firstly,a lumbar-puncture needle(0.6 mm in diameter and 8 cm long) punctured the mass.Secondly,it was to reintroduce the guiding-needle(2.0 mm in diameter and 13.5 cm long) of PMCT,according to the angle and depth between the lumbar-puncture needle and the mass of recheck-CT.Then we introduced the antenna of PMCT and performed PMCT.All patients were followed up between 5 and 48 months(mean,25.5 months).Based on the results of follow-up,therapeutic effect,survival time and recurrence were prospectively evaluated with statistical analysis
Objective The efficacy of combination transcatheter arterial chemoembolization(TACE) with subsequent percutaneous microwave coagulation therapy (PMCT)was assessed.Methods Eighteen patients with 28 tumors under TACE followed within 1~2 days by ultrasound guided PMCT,which were diagnosed by liver biopsy.Results Ninteen tumors measuring 5 cm in greatest dimension showed complete necrosis,5 of 9 tumors measuring ≥5 cm in greatest dimension showed complete necrosis.Conclusions Combination therapy with TACE and PMCT for liver tumor is effective.

Man-made microwave and radiofrequency (RF) radiation technologies have been steadily increasing with the growing demand of electronic appliances such as microwave oven and cell phones. In the case of aliphatic diol acceptors, the yield seemed to be dependent on the symmetrical properties of the acceptors. Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) seeds are widely used for oil extraction and the cold-pressed flaxseed (or linseed) cakes obtained during this process constitute a valuable by-product. The flavonol herbacetin diglucoside (HDG) has been previously reported as a constituent of the flaxseed lignan macromolecule linked through ester bonds to the linker molecule hydroxymethylglutaric acid. In this context, the development and validation of a new approach using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of HDG from flaxseed cakes followed by quantification with a reverse-phase HPLC system with UV detection was purposed. The experimental parameters affecting the HDG extraction yield, such as microwave power, extraction time and sodium hydroxide concentration, from the lignan macromolecule were optimized. A maximum HDG concentration of 5.76 mg/g DW in flaxseed cakes was measured following an irradiation time of 6 min, for a microwave power of 150 W using a direct extraction in 0.1 M NaOH in 70% (v/v) aqueous methanol.

Abstract: Andrographis paniculata has a long history of use in traditional medicine and andrographolide is one of its potent compounds. In this study, a rapid isolation of andrographolide (colourless, bitter and crystalline diterpene lactone) was carried out by a newly developed microwave-assisted extraction. The extraction intensity, time and amount of solvent were optimised prior to this. The conventional heating method provided a 0.4452% yield of andrographolide and microwave heating at 210 W for 40 min provided a 0.589% yield. Compared to conventional extraction procedures, the results suggested that the proposed method was an effective alternative for the extraction of andrographolide. The isolated compounds were found to be the same by UV, HPTLC and 1H-NMR studies. The isolated andrographolide was tested for in vitro antioxidant activity, and showed a potent free radical scavenging activity. ...

In this study, we evaluated the effects of microwave irradiation (MWI) post-deposition-annealing (PDA) treatment on the gate bias stress instability of amorphous indium-gallium-zinc oxide thin-film transistors (a-IGZO TFTs) and compared the results with a conventional thermal annealing PDA treatment. The MWI-PDA-treated a-IGZO TFTs exhibited enhanced electrical performance as well as improved long-term stability with increasing microwave power. The positive turn-on voltage shift (ΔV{sub ON}) as a function of stress time with positive bias and varying temperature was precisely modeled on a stretched-exponential equation, suggesting that charge trapping is a dominant mechanism in the instability of MWI-PDA-treated a-IGZO TFTs. The characteristic trapping time and average effective barrier height for electron transport indicate that the MWI-PDA treatment effectively reduces the defects in a-IGZO TFTs, resulting in a superior resistance against gate bias stress. ...

Magnetic nanoparticles (mNPs) are attractive candidates for numerous applications due to their unique properties. For all these applications mNPs surfaces must be tailored to improve biocompatibility properties or reduce aggregation but also to insert molecules on the particles with precise control of their architecture and surface density. So new methodologies for controlled and efficient functionalization of such materials are needed. In this contribution we will describe the use of various chemical approaches (microwave, click chemistry, photochemistry) for mNPs functionalization and present results of improve grafting rates (up to 40 fold increase). We moreover will propose a new nanoplateform allowing an orthogonal and chemoselective double functionalization.

In KIO3NH3NH4Cl medium, the selenium complex Se(O)SO2- 3, resulted from the reaction of selenite and sulphite in acid solution, gave a catalytic wave, which was applied to the determination of selenium in fish by differential pulse polarography. The sample was decomposed using the HNO3/H2SO4/H2O2 digestion mixture in a closed PTFE digestion vessel with microwave heating. The detection limit was 0.06 μg/dm3. The calibration curve was linear up to 8 μg/dm3. Selenate present was reduced with hot hydrochloric acid to selenite. The recoveries of the selenite and selenate in two spiked samples investigated ranged from 91 to 104%. The NIES CRM No. 6 mussel was analyzed and the results obtained agreed well with the reference value (reference value: 1.5 μg/g; found: 1.43 ± 0.05 μg/g). This thesis presents the analysis and design of a microwave radiometer for internal body temperature measurements. There is currently no available method for non-invasive temperature measurement inside the human body. However, knowledge of both relative and absolute temperature variations over time is important to a number of medical applications. The research presented in this thesis details a proof-of-concept near-field microwave radiometer demonstrating relative thermometry of a multi-layer phantom. There are a number of technical challenges addressed in this thesis for radiometric determination of sub-degree temperature variations in the human body. A theoretical approach is developed for determining sensing depth from known complex layered tissues, which is defined as a figure of merit, and is shown to be dependent on frequency, electrical properties of the tissues, and the near-field probe. Polylactic acid (PLA) was successfully covalently grafted onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) by microwave-assisted polymerization of lactide monomers. The final products MWCNT-g-PLA were characterized with Fourier-transform IR (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicated PLA chain was covalently attached to the MWCNT. The grafted PLA was uniformly coated on the surface of MWCNT with a layer thickness of 2 ~ 6 nm. The grafted PLA content could be controlled by microwave irradiation time and the concentrations of reactant. The product with 60.5% grafted PLA content can be synthesized in one hour.

In other words, I was doing everything one is supposed to do to stay healthy. I was not supposed to get sick. Ventilation systems are extremely venerable to incidental and malicious attacks by terrorists and saboteurs. During attacks by chemical and biological weapons, personnel in temporary and permanent shelters are dependent on a constant supply of clean air. Consequently, the main objective of the proposed work is to develop a microwave low-temperature catalytic oxidation system that will effectively decontaminate air containing aerosolized or gaseous chemical agents (CWAs). In order to protect personnel in shelters, the catalytic oxidation systems should (1) destroy CWAs in air at low temperatures to avoid NOx formation, (2) remove sulfur dioxide produced from the oxidation of CWAs containing sulfur atoms, (3) operate for an indefinite period of time, and (4) destroy biological agents at low temperatures.
