Forested wetlands dominated by Terminalia carolinensis are endemic to Micronesia but common only on the island of Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia. On Kosrae, these forests occur on Nansepsep, Inkosr, and Sonahnpil soil types, which differ in degree of flooding and soil saturation. We compared forest structure, growth, nutrition, and regeneration on two sites each on Nansepsep and Inkosr soils and one site on the much less common Sonahnpil soil type. Terminalia tree sizes were similar on all three soil types, but forests differed in total basal area, species of smaller trees, and total plant species diversity. Terminalia regeneration was found only on the Inkosr soil type, which had the highest water table levels. Other Terminalia species are relatively light demanding, and T. carolinensis exhibited similar characteristics. It is therefore likely that Terminalia requires periodic, but perhaps naturally rare, stand-replacing disturbances (e.g., typhoons) in order to maintain its dominanace, except.
We went to breakfast with the other Sr. couples, and of course Janice ( sorry Sam, we went without you, you were on beautiful Kosrae). We went to a place called The Villages, it is a Hotel/Restaurant on the Island. At The Villages you can rent a little bungalow on the beach, or up in the Jungle. It is a beautiful place. We had Fresh Tuna omelets ( I know they dont sound very good, but OH BABY, they are delicious) and we had fresh pineapple. It was nice to just sit and visit and eat good food, the surroundings are beautiful, I still cant believe we live in such a beautiful place. Enjoy the scenery !!!!!! ...
We had the opportunity of teaching seiminary in Nett (Netch). What a sweet experience. Elder and Sister Kjar had to leave for Guam a couple of days early so we got to teach the seminary. We taught with Elder Davis and Elder Gasu. They took the first half of the lesson on Judges ( We are studying the Old Testament in Seminary and Institute) and did a great job and then I got to teach Ruth. I love the book of Ruth, so it was a sweet experience to teach a story from the scriptures that I love so much. Our Students in Nett are all ages, we have the regular teenagers (ages 12 - 18) and then a lot of the adults in the community come also. There comments when ask a question are so inspiring. I loved teaching Ruth because one of the lessons we learn from Ruth is how important it is we take care of each other, and expecially the ageing and widows. In Netts, these wonderful people live the book of Ruth everyday. They are always watching out for each other and taking care of each other. They also have all ...

On June 19, 2010 the NMI earned a 1-1 draw with neighbor Guam in the 2010 Marianas Cup.[2] The match ended in a draw as there was insufficient lighting to continue the match after the end of regulation. Joe Wang Miller scored for the NMI in the 68th minute and Jason Cunliffe answered in the 89th minute to salvage a draw for Guam. Despite the efforts of the NMIFA, delays in decision making around whether the 2011 Pacific Games football tournament would double up as a FIFA World Cup qualifying event meant that the national team were unable to enter.[17] As a result, no games were played for the next two years until July 2012 when The Blue Ayuyus entered the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup First Preliminary Round, hosted again by Guam.[18] New coach Chikashi Suzuki was conscious of the need to snap the losing run of matches against Guam, had recognised that previous squads had contained a large number of veteran players and called up a number of younger players such as Lucas Knecht and Bo Barry who were ...

To the Editor: Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus related to yellow fever virus, dengue virus (DENV), and West Nile virus (WNV). It is a single-stranded positive RNA virus (10,794-nt genome) that is closely related to the Spondweni virus and is transmitted by many Aedes spp. mosquitoes, including Ae. africanus, Ae. luteocephalus, Ae. hensilli, and Ae. aegypti. The virus was identified in rhesus monkeys during sylvatic yellow fever surveillance in the Zika Forest in Uganda in 1947 and was reported in humans in 1952 (1).. In 2007, an outbreak of ZIKV was reported in Yap Island, Federated States of Micronesia (2). ZIKV also caused a major epidemic in the French Polynesia in 2013-2014 (3), and New Caledonia reported imported cases from French Polynesia in 2013 and reported an outbreak in 2014 (4).. A new challenge has arisen in Brazil with the emergence of ZIKV and co-circulation with others arboviruses (i.e., DENV and chikungunya virus [CHIKV]). We report ZIKV infection in Brazil ...
Abstract. Under the Compact of Free Association (COFA), citizens from Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of the Marshall Islands-also known as COFA migrants-are granted broad migration rights in exchange for providing the United States the use of and access to strategic military defense positioning in the Pacific. For many years, these citizens have lived and worked in cooperation with the U.S. military even as their health was being detrimentally impacted by exposure to nuclear weaponry. Unfortunately, in the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act in 1996, COFA migrants were stripped of their eligibility for most federal benefits, including Medicaid. In the aftermath of this decision, some states continued to provide health care to COFA migrants using state funds, however, the current fiscal crisis is forcing many states to reduce funding for these efforts, putting the health of this population at risk. It is the responsibility of the federal ...
Canberra - The World Bank (WB) warned, on Thursday, against the dire impacts of climate change on the Pacific islands.. Climate change will hit the Pacific harder than anywhere else on Earth and the regions tiny island nations need major international aid to deal with the challenge, the WB said in a report released at the Pacific Islands Forum in Samoa.. The report noted that even under a best-case scenario - with oceans rising 40 centimetres by 2100 - island nations would face huge costs building seawalls to protect their coastlines.. The worst-case outcome - waters up 126 centimetres by 2100 - would swamp large areas of habitable land in low-lying nations such as Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu.. There is little prospect that the high costs of building sea walls could be financed by the countries themselves, the report added.. It said that Kiribati and Tuvalu, which are both only a few metres above sea level, may need to consider wholesale migration, calling on Australia and New ...
At some point in the first half of the 20th century, a couple of ants hitched a ride on a boat and ended up on Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. And so began the rampage of the yellow crazy ants, creatures that have been named one of the top 100 most invasive species in the world. On Christmas Island, scientists have now declared an invasional meltdown of the original ecosystem [Science News].. The latest evidence: The ants are so plentiful and bothersome that theyre preventing birds from feeding on berries, and the birds are therefore failing to disperse seeds around the island.. Researcher Dennis ODowd explains that the long-legged yellowish ants earned the named crazy because when they are disturbed they run around frenetically. ODowd says crazy ants form large super-colonies and cover ground and vegetation in densities of around 1000 ants per square metre. These ants are three-dimensional foragers, he says [ABC Science]. The ants can thickly cover the ...
Sydney Morning Herald. March 26, 2011 As the smoke clears after the detention centre riots, the government is still not asking the big questions, writes David Marr. Now we are shooting them. Tear-gas, batons and water cannon were used years ago when unrest swept detention centres. But a fresh line was crossed on March 13 and crossed again a few nights later when Australian Federal Police at Christmas Islands North West Point detention centre fired on asylum seekers. Then the place was torched.. The riots mark the failure of another great Kevin Rudd initiative: to process all boat-people on this remote island. Logistical miracles are required to keep it operating. Distance makes everything so difficult. It costs a fortune: five times as much to process refugees out there as on the mainland. The Ombudsman, Allan Asher, declared in February this year: The current scale of the operation on Christmas Island is not sustainable.. On North West Point men with nothing to do but wait were sleeping in ...

Studying the liberal arts reveals the complexity of being human. This umbrella of studies helps bring to light the social, environmental, physical, and health problems faced in Guam, Micronesia, and worldwide. Students can then construct solutions from the skills they develop in class.. Sellmann categorizes these skills by each division within the college. The fine arts programs teach innovation. The various humanities programs teach how humanity can adapt and flourish in local, regional, and global communities in the face of existential challenges. And the social and behavioral sciences teach the understanding and development of individual and community ways of thinking and living.. Paul Lazarra, a 2015 graduate with a bachelors in psychology, says his experience at the college enriched his self-awareness so he could better understand and relate to others and their experiences.. Many of the theories and skills I learned in UOGs psychology program assisted me in analyzing life from a broader ...
Hurricanes are among natures most powerful and destructive phenomena. On average, 12 tropical storms, 6 of which become hurricanes form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico during the hurricane season which runs from June 1 to November 30 each year. In the Central Pacific Ocean, an average of 3 tropical storms, 2 of which become hurricanes form or move over the area during the hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 each year. Guam, the Northern Marianas and Micronesia experience typhoons all year round but the main season in July through November with a peak from mid-August to mid-September. Over a typical 2-year period, the U.S. coastline is struck by an average of 3 hurricanes, 1 of which is classified as a major hurricane (winds of 111 mph or greater). And she went places and did things that others, including men, didnt. She learned to dive in the 1940s, first using helmets and air hoses, later using scuba equipment. She studied fishes in Micronesia, learning to free dive from the local fishermen. She took more than 70 dives in deep-sea submersibles.. She went to study the fishes of the Red Sea in 1950, an area that had been ignored by scientists. She called it a virgin sea. She discovered several fish species while there, and the Red Sea became one of her passions. Her continuing efforts to protect unique reef areas in the Red Sea led to their preservation as Egypts first national park in 1983. She published a memoir of her 1950s work in the Red Sea, entitled Lady With a Spear, that became an international best seller.. But through it all, sharks remained Clarks primary interest. She thought sharks were misunderstood, saying After some study, I began to realize that these gangsters of the deep had gotten a bad rap. She proved sharks ...

Thomas argument here is not just a big lie -- its based on a total fabrication. No such fatwa has ever existed, nor is any such religious duty consistent with any official Iranian position. Iran, like most nations -- judging from UN resolution votes virtually every nation except for the US and Micronesia -- disapproves of Israels occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, or Israels refusal to allow Palestinian refugees from the 1948 and 1967 wars to return to their homes, and Israels frequent aggression against neighboring countries. But Iran has also taken the position that it is up to the Palestinians to decide how to deal with Israel. Iran has gone beyond other nations in that they provide substantial military aid to Hezbollah in Lebanon, but thus far at least Hezbollah has only used Iranian rockets in response to Israeli bombing of Lebanon. (Nor have those rockets been very effective.) That is a far cry from a plan to annihilate Israel.. The revolutionary Islamic government in Iran ...

According to the Korea Customs Service (KCS) data published last week, tuna exports reached 200,000 tons last year, up from 141,000 tons in 2013, reported Yonhap News Agency.. The value of the exports edged up 0.8 per cent to US$354 million from $351 million the year before.. The KCS said aggressive fishing for tuna that brought in larger hauls was the main reason for the export rise, as well as overseas demand for skipjack tunas used to make canned food.. Japan, Thailand and Vietnam were the top three largest export markets for tuna fish last year, accounting for 74.7 per cent of all shipments.. In regards to imports, volume was down 3.9 per cent on-year to 11,000 tons in 2014. Total fish imported last year reached $63 million, up 5.8 per cent from $60 million the year before.. The latest data showed most of South Koreas tuna imports came from China, Taiwan and Micronesia last year with most being expensive bigeye and bluefin tunas that are eaten raw.. ...

As a sovereign nation, Palau conducts its own foreign relations.[16] Since independence, Palau has established diplomatic relations with a number of nations, including many of its Pacific neighbors, like Micronesia and the Philippines. On 29 November 1994, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 963 recommending Palaus admission to the United Nations. The United Nations General Assembly approved admission for Palau pursuant to Resolution 49/63 on 15 December 1994.[19] Palau has since joined several other international organizations. In September 2006, Palau hosted the first Taiwan-Pacific Allies Summit. Its President has made official visits to other Pacific countries, including Japan. [20]. The United States maintains a diplomatic delegation and an embassy in Palau, but most aspects of the countries relationship have to do with Compact-funded projects, which are the responsibility of the U.S. Department of the Interiors Office of Insular Affairs.[21]. Throughout the tropics, coral reef ecosystems, which are critically important to people, have been greatly altered by humans. Differentiating human impacts from natural drivers of ecosystem state is essential to effective management. Here we present a dataset from a large-scale monitoring program that surveys coral reef fish assemblages and habitats encompassing the bulk of the US-affiliated tropical Pacific, and spanning wide gradients in both natural drivers and human impact. Currently, this includes |5,500 surveys from 39 islands and atolls in Hawaii (including the main and Northwestern Hawaiian Islands) and affiliated geo-political regions of American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the Pacific Remote Islands Areas. The areca nut (/ˈærᵻkə/ or /əˈriːkə/) is the seed of the areca palm (Areca catechu), which grows in much of the tropical Pacific (Melanesia and Micronesia), Southeast and South Asia, and parts of east Africa. This seed is commonly referred to as betel nut so it is easily confused with betel leaves that are often used to wrap it (paan). The term areca originated from a South Asian word during the 16th century, when Dutch and Portuguese sailors took the nut to Europe. Consumption has many harmful effects on health and is carcinogenic to humans. Various compounds present in the nut, most importantly arecoline (the primary psychoactive ingredient which is similar to nicotine), contribute to histologic changes in the oral mucosa. As with chewing tobacco, its use is discouraged by preventive efforts.. The areca nut is not a true nut, but rather a fruit categorized as a berry. It is commercially available in dried, cured and fresh forms. When the husk of the fresh fruit is green, the nut ...
Following World War II, A. cantonensis spread throughout Southeast Asia and Western Pacific Islands, including Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Cases were soon reported in New Caledonia, the Philippines, Rarotonga, Saipan, Sumatra, Taiwan, and Tahiti. In the 1960s, even more cases were reported from the region from locations such as Cambodia, Guam, Hawaii, Java, Thailand, Sarawak, Vietnam, and the New Hebrides (Vanuatu).[9]. In 1961, an epidemiological study of eosinophilic meningitis in humans was conducted by Rosen, Laigret, and Bories, who hypothesized that the parasite causing these infections was carried by fish. However, Alicata noted that raw fish was consumed by large numbers of people in Hawaii without apparent consequences, and patients presenting with meningitis symptoms had a history of eating raw snails or prawns in the weeks before presenting with symptoms. This observation, along with epidemiology and autopsy of infected brains, confirmed A. cantonensis infection ...

Dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are acute febrile diseases which occur in the tropics can be life-threatening, and are caused by four closely related virus serotypes of the genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae. It is also known as breakbone fever. It occurs widely in the tropics, including northern Argentina, northern Australia, the entirety of Bangladesh, Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Laos, Malaysia, Mexico, Micronesia, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Taiwan, Thailand, Trinidad, Venezuela and Vietnam, and increasingly in southern China. Unlike malaria, dengue is just as prevalent in the urban districts of its range as in rural areas. Each serotype is sufficiently different that there is no cross-protection and epidemics caused by multiple serotypes (hyperendemicity) can occur. Dengue is transmitted to humans by the Aedes ...

MELANESIA, one of the three great divisions of the oceanic islands in the central and western Pacific. It embraces the Bismarck Archipelago, N.E. of New Guinea, the Louisiade, Solomon, Santa Cruz, New Hebrides and Loyalty islands, New Caledonia, Fiji and intervening small groups. The name (Gr. µXas, black, and vijvos, island) is derived from the black colour of the prevailing native race, the Papuan and its allied tribes. Many of these differ widely from the parent race, but all the Melanesian peoples have certain common characteristics which distinguish them sharply from the inhabitants of Polynesia and Micronesia. Their civilization is lower. The Melanesians are mostly negroid, nearly black, with crisp, curly hair elaborately dressed; their women hold a much lower position than among the Polynesians; their institutions, social, political and religious, are simpler, their manners ruder; they have few or no traditions; cannibalism, in different degrees, is almost universal; but their artistic ...

It has been estimated that there are more than 60 million Hepatitis C virus (HCV) carriers in the World Health Organisations Western Pacific region (WHO-WPR), where liver cancer is among the top three causes of cancer death. WHO and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention report the prevalence of HCV in the South Pacific islands (countries within the WHO-WPR) to be high (5-10% and |2% respectively). However, since HCV is not tested for in many of these countries, there is sparse data available to support this assertion. We screened ∼2000 apparently healthy individuals from Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Kiribati and found a sero-prevalence of 2.0%, 0.1% and 0%, respectively. All sero-positive samples tested negative for HCV RNA. Curious as to why all the sero-positive individuals were negative for HCV-RNA, we also screened them for the HCV protective IL28B SNP markers rs12979860 and rs8099917. All antibody-positive participants bar one had HCV protective haplotypes. Our results suggest that HCV

The greatest distance (on a great circle route) entirely within the 48 contiguous states is 2,802 miles (4,509 km, between Florida and the State of Washington);[6] the greatest north-south line is 1,650 miles (2,660 km).[7]. I caught the travel bug as a college freshman. There was an opportunity to volunteer over the summer break. I had rarely traveled and thought I couldnt pass on the opportunity. Looking at the different countries, the Dominican Republic caught my attention, particularly because I knew absolutely nothing about the Dominican Republic.. I signed up and spent a month building schools and bathrooms in a rural region. We spent time with the local community practicing our Spanish, dancing, cooking. Traveling has become one of my favorite hobbies. If you know me, Im always planning the next trip. In a couple of weeks, I will be flying to Saipan to work for a month as an internal medicine resident. Saipan is in the Northern Mariana Islands, a popular tourist site.. However, the local population is medically underserved and the hospital has limited resources. Patient present with severe chronic diseases manifestations at a much younger age and there are nearly no specialists on the island. I feel so ...
