Capital News Service. LANSING - Move over, Milwaukee. Butt out, Buffalo.. Youre not the freshwater capital of the world, despite efforts to spruce up your waterfronts. That title belongs to Southeast Michigan, or at least it should belong.. Thats the message of The Heart of the Lakes (Greenstone Books, $19.95), a new book positioning Southeast Michigan, with its historic water connections and resurgent Detroit waterfront, as the premier freshwater destination.. The freshwater capital of the world would stretch between Monroe and Port Huron along a 100-mile water route that links lakes Huron, St. Clair and Erie.. Its self-evident, and I cant believe its not already a rallying cry for the community leaders of Southeast Michigan, said author Dave Dempsey, the senior adviser at FLOW (For Love of Water), a Traverse City-based environmental group.. Dempsey interweaves Native American, Colonial, early American and recent history in communities from the headwaters to Downriver. ...
On Thursday, May 4th, 2017, I had the opportunity to deliver the commencement speech at Wayne State Universitys Graduation Ceremony for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in Detroit, Michigan. As a proud Wayne State University alumnus, when I was given the invitation, I was beyond pumped! To be able to speak directly to the 2017 graduating class of a university that means the world to me, it was a pleasure. And to be able to share the stage with Derek Daniels (my close mentor and very good friend), it was surreal, to say the least.. Interested in what I said?. If the answer is yes, then youre in luck because my commencement speech was captured on video. So, if you have 15-minutes to spare, feel free to check it out.. I have a transcript, too.. If reading is more your thing, below you will see a transcript of my commencement speech. Give it a peep, buddy.. -. Thank you so much. Thank you so much, Dr. Daniels, and a huge thank you to every single Wayne State University community member that ...

In accordance with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and MDARD joint bovine TB response plan, the DNR is responsible for testing a minimum of 30 free-ranging deer within a 3-mile radius of the affected facility.. Annually, the DNR tests thousands of white-tailed deer for bovine TB statewide. Groundwater samples, taken from 73 wells in 10 counties of southeast Michigan in 1997 had arsenic concentrations in the range of 0.5 to 278 μg/l, the average being 29 μg/l. About 12% of these wells had arsenic concentrations that exceeded the current USEPAs maximum contaminant level of 50 μg/l. Most (53-98%) of the arsenic detected was arsenite [As(III)] and other observations supported the arsenic species distribution (low redox potential and DO). In shallow groundwater (15 m), the concentration of arsenic is possibly controlled by reductive dissolution of arsenic-rich iron hydroxide/oxyhydroxide and dissolution of arsenic sulfide minerals....

She carried the banner for healthy families, healthy children, and healthy communities. Her vision continues through the work of those of us who learned so much from her and continue to be inspired by her, said MPCA CEO Kim Sibilsky. Jean was my direct boss for several years while I was at the Michigan Department of Community Health and was an inspiring mentor. She was a trusted colleague and a person of the highest integrity. She was highly respected among all those in Michigans Public Health family and will be sorely missed. To have known her was a blessing and an honor, said Doug ...

Study Purpose: This study was a process evaluation of the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) residential substance abuse treatment (RSAT) program at the Cooper Street Correctional Facility in Jackson, Michigan. The 272-bed program was designed to treat male, minimum-custody inmates with a history of serious chemical dependency. The phase of treatment at the Jackson Cooper Street facility lasted six months, and was followed by a 12-month aftercare component. The in-custody phase of treatment was guided by a standardized, cognitively-based curriculum created by Ken Wanberg and Harvey Milkman, Strategies for Self Improvement and Change. The main theory of change behind the program was that education about drugs, and their physical, familial, and social effects, coupled with opportunities to learn about recovery and identify triggers for substance use, would help substance-abusing offenders to avoid both substance abuse and criminal behaviors once released into the community. The overall ...
