The Valley of Mexico (Spanish: Valle de México; Nahuatl languages: Tepētzallāntli Mēxihco) is a highlands plateau in central Mexico roughly coterminous with present-day Mexico City and the eastern half of the State of Mexico. Surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, the Valley of Mexico was a centre for several pre-Columbian civilizations, including Teotihuacan, the Toltec, and the Aztec. The ancient Aztec term Anahuac (Land Between the Waters) and the phrase Basin of Mexico are both used at times to refer to the Valley of Mexico. The Basin of Mexico became a well known site that epitomized the scene of early Classic Mesoamerican cultural development as well. The Valley of Mexico is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The valley contains most of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, as well as parts of the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Puebla. The Valley of Mexico can be subdivided into four basins, but the largest and most-studied is the area which contains Mexico City. This ...

OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of lipid abnormalities found in the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey 2006 (ENSANut 2006). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Information was obtained from 4 040 subjects aged 20 to 69 years, studied after a 9- to 12-hour fast. RESULTS: Median lipid concentrations were: cholesterol 198.5 mg/dl, triglycerides 139.6 mg/dl, HDL-cholesterol 39.0 mg/dl, non-HDL-cholesterol 159.5 mg/dl and LDL-cholesterol 131.5 mg/dl. The most frequent abnormality was HDL-cholesterol below 40 mg/dl with a prevalence of 60.5% (95%CI 58.2-62.8%). Hypercholesterolemia (, 200 mg/dl) had a frequency of abnormality of 43.6% (95%CI 41.4-46.0%). Only 8.6% of the hypercholesterolemic subjects knew their diagnosis. Hypertriglyceridemia (, 150 mg/dl) was observed in 31.5% (IC 95% 29.3-33.9%) of ...
Air pollution in Mexico City is a continuing concern for citizens, health experts, and environmentalists. The air pollution of the Mexico City Metropolitan Area, contained within the Valley of Mexico, is measured by the Índice Metropolitano de la Calidad del Aire (Metropolitan Index of Air Quality). It has been said that "Mexico Citys air has gone from among the worlds cleanest to among the dirtiest in the span of a generation." Historic air pollution episodes of the 1950s led to acute increases in infant mortality. Much improvement was made in the city since 1992, when the United Nations named Mexico City "the most polluted city on the planet." At the time pollution was thought to cause 1,000 deaths and 35,000 hospitalizations per year. In 2012 ozone and other air pollutants ranked at about the same level as Los Angeles. This improvement in air quality was achieved, starting in the 1980s, through the Mexican governments requirement that gasoline be reformulated, that polluting factories be ...
A similar analysis among just Mexican-born pulmonary TB patients and their geographic location within the United States (i.e., border state vs. nonborder state) revealed that geographic location was not an independent risk factor for MDR or INH-resistant TB. However, among Mexican-born TB patients, being unemployed in the two years prior to diagnosis (odds ratio (OR) = 1.9; 95% CI, 1.3 2.7) and reported excess alcohol use in the past year (OR = 0.45; 95% CI, 0.27 0.76) were associated (positively and negatively, respectively) with MDR TB, controlling for geographic location, history of previous TB, age, sex, and cavitary disease. Further, being HIV-positive was significantly negatively associated with INH resistance (OR = 0.52; 95% CI, 0.35 0.75), controlling for geographic location, history of previous TB, age, sex, cavitary disease, and smear-positivity.. In 1999 the proportion of Mexican-born border TB patients (84.0%) who received at least some anti-TB treatment using directly observed ...
Broadband UVB intensity was found to be higher at site T0, with an average of 64 μW/cm2 at solar noon, than at site T1, which had an average of 54 μW/cm2 at solar noon. Comparisons of clear-sky modeled UVB intensities with the simultaneous UVB measurements obtained at sites T0 and T1 for cloudless days indicate a larger diffuse radiation field at site T0 than at site T1. The determination of aerosol Ångstrom scattering coefficients at T0 suggests that this is due to the predominance of aerosols in the size range of 0.3 micron, which leads to scattering of UVB radiation peaked in the forward direction and to an enhanced UVB radiation observed at ground level. This enhancement of the UVB diffuse radiation field would explain the enhanced photochemistry observed in the Mexico City area despite the reduction in UVB anticipated from light absorbing species. ...
Purpose: To investigate the association between leptin concentrations and nutritional status among a Mexican adolescent population. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 448 adolescents attending five schools in Durango, Mexico. Serum leptin concentrations were measured by ELISA. Other measurements included height, weight, and waist and hip circumference. Body fat of participants was assessed with bio-electrical impedance using a body composition analyzer InBody-720. Sociodemographic information was also collected. Results: Based on IOTF BMI cut-off points, 34.1% of adolescents were overweight and obese and prevalence rates were higher among females (37.1%) than males (29.5%). In agreement with waist circumference, 22.5% of participants were overweight and had abdominal obesity; and based on waist-to-hip ratio 35.5% had truncal obesity. Leptin concentration levels among females (19.33 ng/dL) were two times higher than among males (40.07 ng/dL) with a statistical significant difference (p=0.000). Leptin

N2 - Purpose: Evaluate the association between driving distance to the US-Mexico border and rural-urban differences in the use of health services in Mexico by US border residents from Texas. Methods: Data for this study come from the Cross-Border Utilization of Health Care Survey, a population-based telephone survey conducted in the Texas border region in spring 2008. Driving distances to the border were estimated from the nearest border crossing station using Google Maps. Outcome measures included medication purchases, physician visits, dentist visits, and inpatient care in Mexico during the 12 months prior to the survey. A series of adjusted logit models were estimated after controlling for relevant confounding factors. Findings: The average driving distance to ...
On April 12, 2009, Mexico responded to a request for verification by the World Health Organization (WHO) of an outbreak of acute respiratory illness in the small community of La Gloria, Veracruz. During April 15--17, the Mexico Ministry of Health received informal notification of clusters of rapidly progressive severe pneumonia occurring mostly in Distrito Federal (metropolitan Mexico City) and San Luis Potosi. In response, on April 17, Mexico intensified national surveillance for acute respiratory illness and pneumonia. During April 22--24, novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection, previously identified in two children in the United States (1), was confirmed in several patients. This report updates a previous report (2) on the outbreak in Mexico and summarizes public health actions taken to date by Mexico to monitor and control the outbreak. During March 1--May 29, national surveillance identified 41,998 persons with acute respiratory illness; specimens from 25,127 (59.8%) patients were tested, ...

efoods]Close to a black cross where Mexican drug cartels used to place the severed heads of their rivals, and near the site where the mutilated bodies of 12 police officers were found, a vendor has little success at his roadside stall selling "lucky" toy rabbits.. The wind-up rabbits wobbled and jumped around a small wood table the vendor had set up on the Four Roads route, on a road in this largely rural western Mexican state known as "Michoacan Bravo" - Wild Michoacan.. The state is home to La Familia Michoacana, a ruthless, pseudo Christian cult-like drug organization that made its appearance in dramatic fashion in 2006 when members rolled five decapitated heads onto a nightclub dance floor.. Violence has since been on the upswing, even after President Felipe Calderon deployed thousands of soldiers and federal police to this state - his home state - of 4.2 million residents.. Darda, 1994, Herpetologica, 50: 167-184, suggested that this binominal covers as many as eleven cryptic species; his population from near La Joya, Veracruz, he applied the name Chiropterotriton chiropterus; this application was rejected by Parra-Olea, 2003, Canad. J. Zool., 81: 2057, who noted that Chiropterotriton chiropterus is not found at this locality. To Dardas population from Chignahuapan, Puebla, Darda, 1994, Herpetologica, 50: 167-184, applied the name Chiropterotriton orculus; this was also rejected by Parra-Olea, 2003, Canad. J. Zool., 81: 2057. Nine species, formerly associated under the name Chiropterotriton chiropterus, from high elevation of the states of Mexico, Puebla, Guerrero, Veracruz, San Luis Potosi, and Morelos, remain unnamed, although Lemos-Espinal and Smith, 2015, Check List, 11(1642): 1-11, noted the occurrence of the nominal species in Hidalgo, Mexico, apparently in error. No interaction was found between border group and gender for either outcome (data not shown; P for interaction = 0.747 for current smoking and P = 0.882 for former smoking). However, the association between former smoking and border population varied by diagnosis status (P for interaction = 0.002). The interaction for current smoking was marginally significant (P = 0.057). Predicted probabilities suggest that the probability of being a former smoker was higher among diagnosed than undiagnosed U.S. Hispanics with a smoking history (76.0% versus 23.7%). However, there was little difference among Mexicans based on diagnosis (39.1% for diagnosed versus 41.7% for undiagnosed). Similarly, U.S. Hispanics with diabetes had a substantially lower probability of being a current smoker if diagnosed (5.3%) versus undiagnosed (18.8%), whereas this probability was slightly higher among diagnosed (20.0%) than undiagnosed (17.8%) Mexicans.. DISCUSSION. In 2001 2002, one in five adults with diabetes residing on ...

ISSN 0719-8000. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0719-81322019000100107.. Salmonellosis has a worldwide relevance in aspects associated with public health, as only in 2009 were reported 93.8 million cases in humans. The objective of the study was to establish the prevalence, risk factors and bacteriological and molecular identification of Salmonella spp in stray dogs in urban, rural and coastal areas of Mexicali, a city in northwest Mexico. From May 2014 to February 2015, 385 dogs were tested. Sampling was performed by rectal swab and conventional bacteriological techniques were applied, for later implementation of the API 20E system and molecular identification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The data were analysed statistically by means of descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression modelling. A ...

We carried out molecular analysis of 80 chromosomes from 40 unrelated Mexican patients with a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. The study was performed in two PCR steps: a preliminary one to identify mutation AF508, the most frequent cause of cystic fibrosis worldwide, and the second a reverse dot-blot with allele-specific oligonucleotide probes to detect 15 additional common mutations in the Caucasian population. A frequency of 45% for AF508 was found, making it the most common in our sample of Mexican patients. Another five mutations (G542X, 3849 + 10 kb C{r_arrow}T, N1303K, S549N, and 621 + 1 G{r_arrow}T) were detected, and these accounted for 11.25%. The remaining mutations (43.75%) were undetectable with the methodology used. 20 refs., 2 tabs. ...

Mexican female sex workers (FSWs) represent a large portion of the reported cases of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Mexico. Despite the imbalance in the distribution of reported cases, there have been few efforts to change high-risk sexual behaviors in this population. There has been a dramatic increase in HIV and other STDs over the past decade, especially in Mexican cities along the United States border. Border cities often have a thriving sex trade industry, and some are considered sexual tourist destinations. FSWs in these border cities, however, often do not know how to practice safe sex. A previous study showed that a culturally sensitive risk reduction counseling program was effective in reducing sexual risk behavior in FSWs in Tijuana, Mexico. It may therefore be possible to implement the same program, with similar efficacy, in other Mexican cities near the U.S. border. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of the Share Safer Sex Program versus a standard ...

Fifty years ago, George Ray and some of the residents of Guadalajara began to toy with the idea of a Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) chapter in Mexico. Many of the Alliance for Compassion boys (see article below) had been living in Guadalajara for a number of years, while still maintaining membership in their chapters back home. California PVA for the Long Beach crowd and Vaughn Chapter PVA for the boys from Chicago, with a sprinkling of PVAers from other chapters. A PVA chapter in Guadalajara would serve to unite all who wished to participate. In addition to helping the kids at the orphanage, it would be helpful to have a functioning veterans service organization in Guadalajara to better serve those specifically disabled with spinal cord injuries who chose to visit or make Mexico their new home. It would also add clout and purpose to the ragtag group of Gringo neighbors from the North who some locals still viewed as nothing but a bunch of drunks and womanizers ...

Background: We describe a family with a 7-year-old proband case diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) plus secondary anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS) as well as two affected paternal aunts. We compared the frequency of these polymorphisms with healthy controls. Objectives: To evaluate the mode of inheritance in this familial case of APS and SLE and the possible association of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) -675 4G/5G and PAI-2 Ser413/Cys polymorphisms. To compare the genotype frequency of these polymorphisms with the results found in a Mexican Mestizo population. Methods: PAI-1 -675 4G/5G and PAI-2 Ser413/Cys were determined by the polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique using Bsl I and Mwo I on four generations of the family studied. PAI-2 Ser413/Cys polymorphism was also determined in 50 healthy individuals of Mexican Mestizo origin. Results: The family pedigree demonstrated that this family did not follow a Mendelian ...

The use of hormonal therapies, including hormonal contraceptives (HC) and postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have been shown to influence breast cancer (BC) risk. However, the variations of these effects among populations and ethnic groups are not completely documented, especially among Hispanic women. We evaluated the association between HC and premenopausal BC risk, and between HRT and postmenopausal BC risk in Mexican women. Data from a Mexican multi-center population-based case-control study ofwomen aged 35 to 69 years were analysed. A total of 1000 cases and 1074 matched controls were recruited between 2004 and 2007. Information on hormonal therapy was collected through a structured questionnaire. Results were analysed using conditional logistic regression models. Overall, HC were used by 422/891 (47.3%) premenopausal women and HRT was used by 220/1117 (19.7%) postmenopausal women. For HC, odds ratios (ORs) for BC were 1.11 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.82, 1.49) for current users

In 1583 the Augustinian order moved the Cristo Aparecido to Mexico City where the image quickly became part of the religious life of urban, baroque Mexico. The belief among the friars and indigenous Christians of Mexico City was that the Cristo Aparecido demonstrated signs of animate life and the image became among the most celebrated sacred images in New Spain. The fame of the image led to an Inquisition hearing that scrutinized the Cristos origins. Over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, in Mexico City the image was not only a baroque adornment, an object of beauty, but also functioned as a

Efforts to wipe out the fly were then focused on California, Arizona, and Texas. This project was repeatedly thwarted, mainly because it was impossible to prevent the reintroduction of the fly across the lengthy United States-Mexico border. Realizing that the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico might provide a northern limit for the fly that would be easier to maintain, the eradication effort incorporated northern Mexico, and the effort was finally successful. By about 1985, all of Mexico north of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Continental United States - was free of C. hominivorax. ...

Breeding in captivity is achieved in the same manner as with all colubrids using the following as a guideline. Towards the end of October cease feeding totally, allowing at least 2 -3 weeks at normal temperature for clearing of the gut. Then gradually reduce the ambient tempeture inside the cage to the lower 50s and maintain for a period of 3 months. Be sure and provide clean water and systematically check animals for general condition and welfare during this period. There is a school of thought that embraces the belief that the males of this species require lower temperatures to produce large quantities of viable sperm. It has been my experience that while certain individual snakes may indeed be helped by this, the norm is that it is NOT required as in some other species. After brumation and the animals are brought back up to optimum temperature of 78 - 84 degrees, feeding should resume for approx. three weeks and the pair should be placed together under supervision for short periods of time ...
