Causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding Organic causes 1 Reproductive tract disease • Pregnancy-related conditions are the most common causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding in women of reproductive age (threatened, incomplete, and missed abortion; ectopic pregnancy; and gestational trophoblastic disease). Implantation bleeding is also quite common at about the time of the first missed menstrual period. • Uterine lesions commonly produce menorrhagia or metrorrhagia by increasing endometrial surface area, distorting the endometrial vasculature, or having a friable/inflamed surface. • Cervical lesions usually result in metrorrhagia (especially postcoitalbleeding) due to erosion or direct trauma. • Iatrogenic causes include the intrauterine device (IUD), oral/injectable steroids for contraception or hormone replacement, and tranquilizers or other psychotropic drugs. Oral contraceptives are often associated with irregular bleeding during the first 3 months of use, if doses are missed or the patient ...

Anemia is a common symptom of leukopenia. This is an indicator that the red blood cell count is dipping in addition to the white blood cell count. Patients suffering from anemia may become tired easily, experience a pounding heartbeat and shortness of breath after exercise. They may have difficulty concentrating and become dizzy easily. Pale skin, leg cramps and insomnia are also common indicators that the patient is suffering from anemia.. Menorrhagia. Women suffering from leukopenia may suffer from menorrhagia, or an abnormally heavy menstrual period. Their periods may last longer than they usually would as well. Women may also experience metrorrhagia, or bleeding from the uterus that is not caused by menstruation. Women suffering from metrorrhagia should seek medical attention right away as this can be a sign that they have a serious infection or cancer.. Other Signs to Watch Out For. Patients with a low white blood cell account will commonly show signs of fatigue which can be coupled with ...

Abnormal uterine bleeding is a general category that includes any bleeding from menstrual or nonmenstrual causes. Hypomenorrhea is abnormally light menstrual periods. Menorrhagia (meno = prolonged,[2] rrhagia = excessive flow/discharge) is an abnormally heavy and prolonged menstrual period. Metrorrhagia is bleeding at irregular times, especially outside the expected intervals of the menstrual cycle. If there is excessive menstrual and uterine bleeding other than that caused by menstruation, menometrorrhagia (meno = prolonged, metro = time, rrhagia = excessive flow/discharge) may be diagnosed. Causes may be due to abnormal blood clotting, disruption of normal hormonal regulation of periods or disorders of the endometrial lining of the uterus. Depending upon the cause, it may be associated with abnormally painful periods. ...
Most unusual bleeding or irregular bleeding (metrorrhagia) in premenopausal women is caused by changes in the hormonal balance of the body. These changes are not pathological. Exceptionally heavy bleeding during menstruation is termed menorrhagia or hypermenorrhea, while light bleeding is called hypomenorrhea. Women on hormonal contraceptives can experience breakthrough bleeding and/or withdrawal bleeding. Withdrawal bleeding occurs when a hormonal contraceptive or other hormonal intake is discontinued.[1]. There are pathological causes of unusual vaginal bleeding as well. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding is a common cause of menorrhagia and irregular bleeding. It is due to a hormonal imbalance, and symptoms can be managed by use of hormonal contraception (although hormonal contraception does not treat the underlying cause of the imbalance). If it is due to polycystic ovary syndrome, weight loss may help, and infertility may respond to clomifene citrate.[citation needed] Uterine fibroids ...

David Hoffman sums up the use of Ladys Mantle as a "womans herb". He says, "Ladys mantle will help reduce pains associated with periods as well as ameliorating excessive bleeding. It also has a role to play in easing the changes of the menopause. As an emmenagogue it stimulates the proper menstrual flow if there is any resistance. However, in the often apparently paradoxical way of herbal remedies, Ladys mantle is a useful uterine astringent, used in both menorrhagia and metrorrhagia. Its astringency provides a role in the treatment of diarrhea and as a mouthwash for sores and ulcers and as a gargle for laryngitis ...
Endometrial or uterine polyps are growths that occur in the endometrium (the inner lining of the uterus) and are usually noncancerous (benign) but may cause problems with fertility or heavy or irregular vaginal bleeding. Endometrial polyps usually occur in women who are between 40-50 years old and can also occur after menopause. Cervical polyps are growths that occur on the cervix. They are common especially in women who have had children. Cervical polyps can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, intermenstrual bleeding or bleeding after sex (post coital bleeding). Polyps are usually noncancerous (benign) although a minority of them can be cancerous or can eventually turn into cancer (precancerous polyps). Uterine fibroids are a common cause of heavy menstrual bleeding, although they do not often cause abnormal intermenstrual bleeding. ...

Total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH). Severe menometrorrhagia unresponsive to medical therapy, severe anemia, and symptomatic fibroid uterus.
The diagnosis of PCOS was based on information ob- tained by clinical examination (hirsutism and ovulatory dis- orders with an intermenstrual interval of Ͼ36 days), obser-vation of polycystic ovaries in ultrasonography (11), The genotypes and frequencies of apoE alleles are pre- laboratory testing revealing androgen excess (serum total sented in Table 2. This study demonstrates that MTUS1 is a P4-PGR signaling target gene in the murine uterus. The ovarian steroid hormones tightly regulate the uterine endometrium, and stimulate uterine cell proliferation by various mechanisms, such as induction of growth factors, paracrine signaling, and by direct regulation of cell cycle genes [22]. A transgenic mouse with a null mutation in the Pgr gene (PRKO) is a well-designed experimental model to understand the essential role for PGR in P4-mediated uterine responses [20]. P4 induces the expression of MTUS1 protein in uterine epithelial cells of wild type mice but not PRKO mice at GD 3.5. Increased P4 rapidly suppressed endometrial proliferation by downregulation of genes related with DNA replication such as proliferating cell nuclear antigen, cellular marker of proliferation, thymidine kinase 1, forkhead box protein O1 [23]. PGR is upregulated in the LE from GD 0.5 to GD 3.5 and in both epithelial and stromal cells and then abruptly decreased in luminal ...
The cyclic production of estrogen and progesterone during the ovarian cycle induces a corresponding cycle of endometrial proliferation and development. (Fig. 1, bottom panel). This endometrial cycle includes a proliferative phase lasting about 11 days, a secretory phase lasting about 12 days, and a desquamative or menstrual phase of about five days during which menstruation ensues.. During the follicular phase of the ovarian cycle, the endometrium proliferates and increases in thickness under the influence of estradiol. This marks the proliferative phase of the endometrial cycle. During the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle, progesterone stimulates further endometrial cell proliferation, differentiation, and secretory development to support implantation and to nourish the developing conceptus. This is the secretory phase of the endometrial cycle. Progesterone also promotes secretory changes in the lining of the fallopian tubes that will support the fertilized egg as it travels down the fallopian ...
Normal endometrial function requires a balance of progesterone (P4) and estrogen (E2) effects. An imbalance caused by increased E2 action and/or decreased P4 action can result in abnormal endometrial proliferation and, ultimately, endometrial adenocarcinoma, the fourth most common cancer in women. Jeong’s laboratory has special interests in research relating to womens health, particularly infertility and cancer using genetically engineered mouse models.. We have identified mitogen-inducible gene 6 (Mig-6) as a down stream target of progesterone receptor (PR) and steroid receptor coactivator (SRC-1) action in the uterus. Mig-6 plays a critical role in the regulation of uterine function and the development of endometrial hyperplasia and cancer in the presence of steroid hormones. Importantly, the observation that endometrial carcinomas from women have a significant reduction in MIG-6 expression provides compelling support for an important growth regulatory role for Mig-6 in the uterus of ...

Tamoxifen resistance and tamoxifen-induced endometrial proliferation are major limitations of tamoxifen therapy and chemoprevention. The present study shows that MSA inhibition of ERα signaling is not restricted to tamoxifen-sensitive MCF-7 cells. MSA antagonism of estradiol-dependent ERE2e1b-luciferase and endogenous c-myc and pS2 gene expression was shown in MCF-7-LCC2 cells, an ERα-positive, tamoxifen-resistant variant of the MCF-7 parental line and in two ERα-positive human endometrial cancer cell lines, Ishikawa and HEC1A (Figs. 1 and 2). In addition, MSA also blocked tamoxifen activation of these genes in endometrial Ishikawa and HEC1A cells (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2C-D, column 6). The major mechanism for MSA disruption of ER signaling in all ERα-positive cells lines was via rapid decrease of ERα mRNA and protein that preceded disruption of ERα-regulated gene expression (Figs. 3 and 4). MSA alone inhibited the growth of tamoxifen-sensitive, tamoxifen-resistant and endometrial-derived cells. ...

OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess endometrial chemokines in users of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) and correlate them with leucocyte populations, uterine natural killer cells (uNK) and mast cells (MCs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Endometrium was obtained from two groups of women who had been using LNG-IUS for 3 years or more: 11 amenorrhoeic women formed the non-bleeding group and 15 women who maintained some form of cyclic bleeding comprised the bleeding group. Specific antibodies were used for the assessment of neutrophils, uNK cells and MCs. Immunohistochemistry was performed to locate the chemokines 6Ckine and interleukin-8 (IL-8). RESULTS: Neutrophils were few and without differences between the two groups. uNK cells were significantly higher in the bleeding group (P , 0.0001). There was no difference between the total number of MCs and activated MCs, but there was a greater extracellular area stained for MC tryptase (P , 0.05). Chemokines 6CKine and IL-8 were ...
