A warm summer day turned disastrous when a devastating tornado struck the lakeside community of Lorain, Ohio on June 28, 1924. Forming near and also damaging Sandusky, Ohio the tornado traveled across Lake Erie and came ashore at the Lorain Municipal Bath House in Lakeview Park where eight people were killed and many more were injured. The tornado then ripped through the downtown business district damaging 200 businesses. The State Theater, where many went to enjoy an afternoon matinee, collapsed under the force of the storm. Fifteen people were killed in the theater and many others were injured. Cars and homes were destroyed, trees were uprooted and more than 60 freight train cars were scattered about the railroad tracks.. Some believed that there were actually two tornados that may have merged and moved eastward adding to the destruction. The storm was responsible for the loss of 78 lives, the destruction of 500 homes; it left 7,000 homeless. The cost of damages to Lorain in 1924 dollars was ...
contact exposure of third instars) revealed that stable (no further change) LC₅₀ values often can only be obtained using after-treatment periods of ≥72 h. The ecdysone agonist tebufenozide was the only compound that did not cause any mortality (within 360 h after initial exposure) in either of the two lacewing species. While methyl-parathion was the most toxic compound within a 48 h period after initial exposure, LC₅₀ and LC₉₀ estimates, determined after 360 h, produced similar values for methyl-parathion, azinphos-methyl, cypermethrin, fenoxycarb and diflubenzuron. Comparisons showed that C. caniea was far more resistant to the 2 organophosphates and the pyrethroid than M. tasmaniae. However, both species were equally sensitive to the 2 insect growth regulators fenoxycarb and diflubenzuron, with morphological effects being more severe in C. camea. In field experiments, fenoxycarb also proved to be harmful to both species (at a rate of 0.01% AI). Preliminary ultrastructural ...
Because of the widespread use of pesticides for domestic and industrial applications the evaluation of their genotoxic effects is of major concern to public health. Although various experimental data have provided evidence that pesticides can possess genotoxic properties in animals and in in vitro test systems after acute and chronic exposure, the information on the genotoxic effects of some of pesticides is limited and inconsistent. In the present study, the genotoxic potential of commonly used pesticides (i.e., dimethoate and methyl parathion from the organophosphate class, propoxur and pirimicarb from carbamates, and cypermethrin and permethrin from pyrethroids) have been evaluated. The genotoxic effects of these substances were examined using the single cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay in freshly isolated human peripheral lymphocytes. The cells were incubated with 10, 50, 100 and 200 mu g/ml concentrations of the test substances for 0.5h at 37 degrees C and DNA damage was compared with ...
LORAIN, Ohio - An initial autopsy on the body of Cory Barron, a 22-year-old from Fremont who went missing Friday, could not determine his cause of death, an official at the Lorain County Coroners Office said Wednesday.. The coroners office sent blood and tissue samples to their lab for a full toxicology report, which could take at least 15 days.. Mr. Barron was last seen Friday at a country music concert at Progressive Field in Cleveland. His body was found Tuesday in the county landfill in Oberlin.. Police said they were focusing their investigation around Progressive Field, but were waiting for a full medical examiners report.. Mr. Barrons sister, Britta, expressed her grief and thanked the community for its support in a message posted on Facebook on Wednesday.. The support, dedication, and love that has been shown to Cory and the rest of our family over the past few days has been beyond incredible, and my family will be forever thankful, she wrote. All of your efforts, thoughts, ...
Acute sinusitis can show up with either persistent (the most common form) or severe symptoms. Patients with persistent symptoms of acute sinusitis are differentiated from patients with simple colds solely on the basis of the duration of the symptoms. A simple cold usually lasts 5 to 7 days, and, even if symptoms linger, there should be improvement by 10 days. Cold symptoms that show no improvement after 10 days may be acute bacterial sinusitis.. The symptoms of cold viruses are indistinguishable from acute bacterial sinusitis. They usually include either nasal discharge (thin or thick; white, yellow, or green) or a cough (dry or wet) during both the day and the night. Some children also have bad breath, and/or swelling and darkening around the eyes. Complaints of a headache and facial pain are unusual until adolescence.. The second, less common appearance of acute sinusitis is a cold that seems more severe than usual. The severity is defined by the combination of a high fever (higher than ...
An ophthalmologist experienced in the examination for this condition can diagnose retinopathy of prematurity. A set of dilating drops is placed in each eye to dilate the pupil. The infant is examined with an instrument to keep the eyelids open (called a lid speculum), and the retina is inspected with an ophthalmoscope. The eyeball may be manipulated to complete the examination. The area (zone) of retinal involvement and the severity (stage) of the disease define retinopathy of prematurity. Zone I is a circular area, roughly equivalent to the optic nerve and macular area in the center of the retina. Zone II is a larger circle surrounding this area, roughly equivalent to the middle of the retina. Zone III is the remaining anterior (or front) retina and represents an area of near maturity of the retinal vessels. Severe retinopathy of premature occurs most often in Zones I and II. Stage I is defined as a line found at the border of the normal retina and the retina without blood vessels. Stage II is ...

LORAIN -- A city councilwoman who fought for more than a year to ban a controversial substance within city limits said she now can rest easier. A representative from Brush Wellman Inc. signed a voluntary agreement with the city on Wednesday, stating that the companys bronze engineering plant in the Lorain would not produce, store or manufacture beryllium.. Beryllium, a compound used as an alloy with other metals in the defense, electronics and automotive industry, has been known to cause chronic and fatal lung disease if its dust is inhaled during its manufacturing process.. State and federal laws regulate the production of beryllium. But the compound earned a reputation locally at the former Brush Beryllium plant on West First Street in Lorain during the 1930s and 40s. Several workers there and residents living near the plant at the time became ill and died, according to a study completed in 1944.. How Is a CBC and Chemistry Profile Performed?. To perform a CBC and chemistry profile, your veterinary team must first obtain a small blood sample from your pet. This procedure is usually very quick; it may take only a few seconds if the patient is well behaved. For patients that are very frightened or not well behaved, your veterinary team may want to use a muzzle, towel, or other gentle restraint device. In some cases, such as in patients with very thick fur, it may be necessary to shave the hair from the area where blood will be drawn. This is often a good way to find the vein quickly, and the hair will grow back.. Some veterinary offices have in-house blood analysis equipment, so they can perform a CBC and chemistry profile in the office and have results the same day. Other offices send blood samples to an outside laboratory for these tests to be performed. If an outside laboratory is used, results are generally available within 1 to 2 days. Because a recent meal changes the blood and may ...
The Basics. Many outer ear infections in dogs require medicine to be put directly into the ear. This procedure can be relatively easy, as long as you follow a few simple guidelines. The most important guideline is to always put health and safety first. If, for any reason, your pet becomes so agitated that you feel you are at risk of being bitten, stop. If the procedure seems excessively painful for your pet, stop and get your veterinarians advice.. Some dogs are prone to ear infections and may also need regular ear cleanings at home. Your veterinarian can tell you whether and how often to clean your dogs ears.. Severe infections or ones that involve the middle or inner ear may require oral medication in addition to ear medication.. Follow Recommendations. The ear is a very delicate structure. It is very important to closely follow your veterinarians recommendations for medicating your dogs ear. Treating too frequently or too aggressively can make the problem worse, not better. Sensitive, ...

The 2019 FireFish has to be built before it can be burned. Last year, Cleveland Heights artist Daniel McNamara designed and assembled the star of the show for the arts festival that aims to spark revitalization in Lorain. McNamara, the burning coordinator for FireFish, is returning with similar materials for 2019. But festival-goers should not expect an identical FireFish when the celebration commences in downtown Lorain on Sept. 20 and 21.

Approximately 200 Canada geese (Branta canadensis) died at a playa lake in the Texas Panhandle shortly after a winter wheat field in the basin adjacent to the lake was treated with parathion to control newly invading Russian wheat aphids (Diuraphis noxia). No evidence of infectious disease was diagnosed during necropsies of geese. Brain ChE activities were depressed up to 77% below normal. Parathion residues in GI tract contents of geese ranged from 4 to 34 ppm. Based on this evidence, parathion was responsible for the goose mortalities. Parathion applications to winter wheat will undoubtedly increase if parathion is applied for control of both Russian wheat aphids and greenbugs (Schizaphis graminum). Geese may potentially be exposed to widespread applications of parathion from fall to spring, essentially their entire wintering period....

TONI MORRISON: THE PIECES I AM offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the acclaimed novelist. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to 70s-era book tours with Muhammed Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a little black girl seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels The Bluest Eye, Sula and Song of Solomon, her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University. Project Information. Exhuming the Rust Belt. CDFs are transitional landscapes. Every deposit of sediment brings a mix of seed, agricultural fertilizer, and biophysical remnants of an industrialized watershed, all of which support spontaneous, sometimes invasive, vegetation. A handful of active CDFs are networked into local industrial ecologies in order to provide material for road construction and landfill caps. As CDFs close, they are either incorporated into other types of infrastructure, such as airports and harbor facilities, or cultivated as wildlife preserves.. The 20 currently active CDFs in the Great Lakes region are more than 80% full, and a dredging backlog is accumulating. [1] Harbors on Lake Erie, situated in the heart of the American Rust Belt, are approaching a point of crisis. CDFs at Toledo, Cleveland, and Lorain Harbor have less than five years capacity remaining and among the highest demand for disposal in the Great Lakes. From the point of view of the left in the rust belt-I am based in Cleveland-the November 2016 election is between two unacceptable candidates. One is of the Washington establishment that has pretty systematically failed to understand the impact of its policies, such as NAFTA, on the rust belt cities like Lorain and Youngstown and Flint. She is the candidate of Wall Street and Silicon Valley. But also, let us not forget, a candidate of reason and (a brand of) feminism. Unfortunately, much of the progressive community (environmentalists; feminists; civil rights organizations) has taken an uncritical posture toward her. (This happens every four years with clock-like regularity).. Her opponent is an arrogant demagogue of the populist right, a man who plays to racist or at least xenophobic fears of his base (Mexicans are rapists and drug dealers; ban all Muslims), a candidate of unreason (Ill make up whatever facts I want). A staunch advocate for the Second Amendment, sure, but the First ...
The healthy development of key neurocognitive functions, such as face recognition and social cognitive function, is essential for learning to navigate ones environment. Individual differences in these functions predict important developmental outcomes including successful social communication skills, school readiness, and interpersonal relationships. Several recent investigations have focused on understanding how early perceptual experience influences the behavioral and neural specificity of face processing during the first year of life. Research in this area has revealed several perceptual biases arising within the first year of life, including the other-race effect. These findings indicate that infants ability to readily differentiate among face identities is narrowed to the race and gender groups that they have the most experience with.. This indicates that being able to attend to and possibly learn from faces is influenced by familiarity with facial features such as race and gender. ...

To prevent and control FVBIs in humans by informing public health decision making within the Department of Defense (DoD) and the global health community.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, large scale monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 has helped to prevent spread and inform public health decisions. This has largely been done through individual sampling (ie nasal and saliva sample collection) and through environmental surveillance in wastewater. Monitoring needs will continue to exist in the future after mass vaccination to continue to measure variants of concern and in facilities where vaccination rates are low. However, an additional tool is needed to monitor SARS-CoV-2 at the building scale, particularly in high-risk settings such as congregate care facilities.. This study measured RNA from SARS-CoV-2 on surface swabs, passive samplers, and bulk dust samples collected from rooms of individuals who tested positive for COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA was measured within these samples using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and two digital PCR (dPCR) methods. This study did not measure SARS-CoV-2 infectivity. We found ...

By Dr Rohit Gutgutia. Parents always take umpteen number of precautionary measures to ensure that their babies are safe and healthy. While the present generation of parents are often going above and beyond to educate themselves about various medical frontiers to secure the future of their child, there are still a few grey areas where creating awareness is essential. One of such is the importance of genetic testing and its role in treating childhood onset disorders.. Genetic disorder is any disease triggered by a change in the DNA sequence either in fragments or whole. Some people carry genes of genetic illnesses in dormant form and might not show any symptoms themselves, as symptoms are caused only if two of the problem genes are inherited. In case of babies with genetic disorders, some are hereditary, which means that it is passed on from their parents. Other genetic changes can totally be alien to the baby. These chromosome abnormalities produce more than 50 percent of first trimester ...
